I work for city government and can't do without my truck for a little repair like this one. After seeing your video I repaired it myself and saved the taxpayers a little extra money in the process. Thank you for posting this one.
Wayne Groves NO, thank YOU for actually considering taxpayer dollars when you can! Just wish more government employees across the board would do the same!
THANKS!! I fixed it in 10 minutes!! The only thing I would recommend, is taking blue painter's tape, and tape off around the edges of the gas take door. That way you don't accidentally chip your paint! Worked great for me and no chips or scratches.
Thanks for your help. Prior to doing anything I ordered the fuel door repair kit from Amazon for $12.95. I watched the first few minutes of some joker’s video where the guy was talking about his morning coffee and how beautiful the sunrise was. That was all I needed to watch from that guy. I hate it when people go off subject or worse yet try to be funny. Anyway your video was to the point with no superfluous bullshit. I took the yellow ring off along with the three screws, crawled under the vehicle and pinched the one tab and pulled out the assembly. My fuel door had the plastic pin but was missing the spring. The Amazon repair kit had everything including a pin that goes through a hole in the main pin and then a keeper. The metal pin will never raise up like the OE pin did. Thanks a bunch.
Very nice step by step procedure with great detail, Jason. Watch the gasket placement on the left when reinstalling. There is a screw clamp attached to the chassis for the fuel fill pipe that is easy to release and once removing the three bolts, you can swing the filler out of the way to get better access for the fuel door pod removal.
Thank you for your posting of how to fix an F150 fuel door. Mine is a 2009. Of great help was the visibility of the spring orientation with plastic axle. My spring had fallen off and the axle had shifted 180 degrees. Your picturing made it possible to realign these two parts. You posting probably saved me a few hundred dollars by doing it myself, because the dealership has doubled prices on parts in my city and they charge an exorbitant amount for labor.
There are a bunch of videos that show how to remove the door assembly and push the pin back in and re-install the spring. Your video actually shows how to prevent the pin from working it's way out again with a simple fix. Thanks for video.
Thank you for this video. I was able to do the temporary fix right now. This was so easy I am a female and was able to do it. Took me a minute or two figure out the tabs up underneath but once I got those... easy peezy! Thanks again!!
It happened to me yesterday 9/16/2017 while traveling from Chicago back to Cleveland when I noticed that my gas flap cover is not closing after filling up my gas tank, so next thing in the morning, I decided to google & search the remedy & I found this tip from you! I found my screw in my drawer cabinet & washer in my computer spare parts! Thank you very much! This tutorial helps me a lot to save the huge amount of money just to fix it! Now, it fixed!
Thanks a lot. I bought one from my friend recently that has this issue, and was going to take to a body shop for repair. Now that I see it's an easy fix, I'll just do it myself!
Worked for me - only warning I have is to be very careful when selecting the screw to put in the bottom of the shaft with the washer. I used a small screw but it was a bit too thick, and I had to back it off because as I got it about halfway tightened up I could see it was actually twisting the piece and I almost snapped it. This was my mistake, and a smaller screw worked when I found one, just wanted to mention it. Thanks again - much appreciated!
Thanks. Found my fuel door hanging open when I went to pick up my truck from the tire store. I thought they did something to break it, but I guess that pin just decided to pop out while they had it. Easy fix if you have some small screws and washers around.
Thanks for posting this. It helped me today as I fixed the fuel door on my 2013 STX. I don't know if the inside is a little different but I had a hard time getting in the back there to push in those clips. I scraped my arm up pretty good. My wife actually came and helped out as her arms were a little thinner than mine. We finally got it out though and I was able to push the pin back down. It definitely was easier getting back in than getting it out.
Had the same issue - I'm all scraped up, I have an F-150 FX4 - I may have muttered a potty mouth word or two... but in the end it was not graceful, but it worked.
Thanks Jason. After watching your video I fixed the gas door on my 2012 F-150 Lariat and the job went quicker, smoother, and easier than expected. (that almost never happens) Thanks for posting!
Jason, My door lid has the same issue, I am so thankful for your video. The dealerships would probably charge an hour worth of labor for this simple and easy repair. I will repair mine tomorrow and post my results. Thanks, Chris
Thanks for the video, it helped me repair my gas door. I was concerned the screw would pull out, so I shaved off enough of the collar to allow me to drill through the shaft and insert a small cotter pin.
I did this, supper easy, took more time to remove and install than to put the screw and washer in to repair, one thing, spray the part you have to realign and push down with penetrating oil, makes it way easier to get it to fit back together, thanks for the tip. Good job.
I appreciate you posting this. My hinge pun was just about to fall out and thought I needed a new door assembly. Fixed it in 5 minutes for free. Thanks!
Great video. Looked at several other videos before finding this one. They all show how to fix the pin but did not show how to get the assembly out of the panel which is the hardest part. Saved me some cash. Thank you!
Really helpful instructions and video. There is another video here that adds the easy way to remove the plastic cover to keep from chipping that paint. That too was nice to know. Thank you Jason.
I was just about to throw in the towel because I couldn't get the dang thing out. The first tab was easy but the other one on the same side but higher on the mechanism was hard to find. I maneuvered my arm at a different angle and was able to locate that second tab. Piece of cake thanks to you. Appreciate it!!
Thank you so much! Took me longer to round up tools a a screw and washer than it did to fix. Thanks to Michael about door removal tip. When You Tube first came out I thought who in the heck would use this. Ha!
I tried to put a new assembly into my 2009 F150 and nearly lost my mind...that hinge pin / post kept coming out..you have provided a means to an end with drilling a small hole and adding a screw and washer to keep that from happening...Thank you!!
I'll add another thank you to the list. My '13 F-150 just had this exact issue this morning when filling up. I was able to do the exact same fix with hardware I had laying around. Thanks for helping me get this done in 20 min and for saving me the money for replacement parts!
Had it happen on my 2010 F150 on the way to a two day meeting I couldn’t miss. Double sided tape got me through and your video helped me fix it right. Thanks so much!
Thanks that worked perfectly for my 2014...I was just about to go to dealership and pay them to fix it...now I can fill up my fuel tank instead...good looking out.
You are a rock star! I was having this problem with my F-150 and was planning to take it in. I watched this video and decided to take the task on myself. It was literally less than a 20 minute fix (and I'm not mechanically inclined.) Thanks for posting the video.
thanks for the video. I had this problem with my 2012 F-150 and I was able to fix the problem with your help. It might be worth mentioning when you set the pin back in place you need to make sure the tab on the pin matches up to the slot in the body. It is helpful to take the outside door cover off before you start (saves the possibility of scratching paint). There is a release tab on the inside of the door assembly. Take a small screwdriver and lift the tab and the door slides right off the hinge mechanism.
Dude thanks for the help. 2011 f150 fuel door would not stay shut. Thanks to you I have it fixed. I spent 3 dollars cause I bought stainless screws and washers. BETTER THAN NEW!!!
Yours was the first video I picked, mainly because I have a red STX too. I am not mechanically inclined, much less body work knowledgeable. I watched the video and finished about the time the video was over. Luckily, I didn't have much issue getting it back in. Great video! You made this task seem so easy with your step-by-step, novice level instructions.
On my 2012 F150 I could not locate the tabs to push or get Leverage if I had. After removing the door lid and the three bolts I used duck tape to protect the paint on opposite side of henge and pried it out with wide screwdriver. Popped out easily. I did not have a small washer so I filed the plastic pin end down a bit and drilled hole in end and used gutter screw to hold. If is gives trouble again I will order a new one from Amazon for about $30. These videos helped get me started.
Excellent video! If you use a flat head screw driver and push the tab on the inside cap, you can easily remove the outside piece without fear of scratching. Thanks!
Great idea! My 2004 F-150 Super Crew is somewhat different. I ended up epoxying a neodymium magnet inside the right side of the housing and then I added a steel screw to the door. They line up well and hold the door shut tightly. I didn’t have to disassemble anything and it has held for eight years. This problem should have been a recall repair as well as the window regulators. Three of my four door have had the regulators crap out. It is a $500.00 repair at the dealer. The parts are on Amazon for 50 bucks. What a ripoff!
Mine was easy, 2010 XLT. For the paint protection just put some blue masking tape around the circumference of the opening and around the edge of the door itself. Took 25 min. Great as new. Good video
My fuel door on my 2010 just started going loose on me today. I went "What the heck". Well maybe I said something else. But now, thanks to you, I know what to do. Thanks.
You're a lifesaver. Thanks. Much easier to return that thing that to get out. Put a couple of pieces of masking tape on the paint to prevent scratches, and try using a plastic upholstery/trim tool to help with extraction. Thanks again!!
Awesome free fix! Took about ten minutes assuming you have hardware lying around. I filed the part sticking out flush and worked great! Thanks so much.
Thanks! Very informative video!!! I replaced fuel doors on both of my F-150's at $40.00+/- , and now have another broken one. I will use your technique to repair rather than replace. As mentioned by others, fuel door cover slides off to make an easier repair. Also, I stick a rag in fuel filler tube to keep fasteners from falling into tank...
Great video. I used this trick and fixed it in about 5 minutes (actually 10.. it took me 5 minutes to find a small enough drill bit!). For the clips on the right, it was too hard to reach with my hands so I used a tip from another video and carefully undid them from the front with a screwdriver and a towel to protect the paint! Thanks for helping me get it working again.. for FREE!
Thank you! New to Ford trucks and just bought my 2012 a couple months ago. This was driving me nuts and I wasnt sure if the door had just gotten loose or what... this helped immensely.
Just repaired my 2009 with 180,000 miles. Age effected the condition of the tabs and they snapped off. Temperature was 38 degrees and that probably did not help either. It still went back together OK. Applied your trick with the screw and washer. Appears to work just fine. Thanx much for the help. Continuing Ed at UA-cam U.
Thanks Jason. This was a big help and mine was loose just like you said. I put a little grove around the end of the plastic spring shaft and put a "C" spring clip on it. Worked great. Thanks again!
I heated up half of a cotter pin with a torch multiple time to go slow and push the cotter pin through the plastic that protrudes from the bottom. Then I bent it up to keep it from releasing. Working great now.
Man thank you for this fix. Would love to hear any other fixes or processes you have for working on your f-150, you have a very clear and effective way of translating the information. Thanks again
Thanks again, for the 2nd time. First time, I didn't take the advice on a "make shift stopper" at the bottom, it popped up again. Wont get me a 3rd time.
I was about to go buy a magnet to glue inside there to keep door shut on 2011 f150. Thank you for posting this video and saving me from having to do that
This helped tons... Thanks for sharing this video... Just happened to my 2013 with 180k miles so I guess I got a lot of use out of it. Worked like a charm..
Great video!! Thanks for posting. This just happened on my 2004 F150. Well, one good thing...it lasted for 14 years before this problem came up. Thanks again!
Hey thanks a lot for the video! I've got a 2011 FX4 5.0L which I bought new, that this happened to just a few months ago. I hate making right turns and watching my fuel door pop open. Interestingly enough, I made it 5 years and 38K miles before it went. 5 years seem's be about the average life of these fuel assembly's out of the factory.
Been driving for two years with some makeshift velcro (usually) keeping it closed. I have the aftermarket rear wheel liners that make it a bit more of a trick to release the tabs to pull the whole thi g out but was able to just release the bottom two with a screwdriver and yank it out. I used two washers, one that slipped over the peg first to take up the gap between the body and the tip of the pin and then one just bigger than the tiny screw. 2012 I've had since new.
Thanks AGAIN! Twice now I’ve used your video to walk me through this repair lol. I guess I didn’t use enough screw on my first repair of the door. Hopefully this does the trick this time!
Excellent video. The repair only cost me about $25 and that was because I bought a small vise to make it easier to drill the hole. Without that, it would have be a $2.41 repair and I have screws and washers left over to use on other projects. Getting your arm up to the push tabs is a little difficult, but other than that this was a really easy fix. Thanks for posting this video.
This happened on my 2012 about 2 years ago. I did this same fix for it. It just broke again today. I haven't taken it apart yet to see what failed but it probably pulled the screw out. Also the painted part comes off the hinge assembly super easy so you don't have to worry about scratching it.
Good video. I would also mention that there is a tab that you push to slide your painted cover off, Do this first so you do not have to worry about scratching the paint.
Thanks, I will do the same. The little tab on the arm is a locking tab. Slide a small screwdriver in and pry it out and the gas cap will slide off the arm. Will slide back on very easy. Prevents paint scratch.
Very informative. Having problems with mine and this video should help. Most I've seen do very little to explain how to actually remove the entire assembly. Very clear and well done!
Thanks worked like a charm. I didn't use a screw I pressed on a toothed washer on the end of the shaft, time will tell. I should of dabbed the washer with JB weld, just thought of it. BTW Ford had quoted me several hundred dollars to do a repair of course they were the same clowns who told me my differential seal was leaking 50K ago, haven't see a sign of oil after I cleaned off the oil they sprayed on the seal.
Might help to mark (on masking tape or dry erase marker) alignment points between door and body for re-inserting steps! Great video; can't wait (HA!!) to actually dig in!!!
Super helpful. Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate. This issue just happened on my Ford F-150, 2011. Bummer. To buy the whole part is about $75 as of Sept 2016. It's also not covered under Premium extended Ford warranty. This stupid thing is considered an accessory by Ford. Go figure. Also, you would have to pay for labor at roughly $100 an hour. Thanks again.
Thank you sir
Nice looking out, we need to get you into working for the government, stop all the ridiculous waste, but you sound too smart for that, ha!
THANKS!! I fixed it in 10 minutes!! The only thing I would recommend, is taking blue painter's tape, and tape off around the edges of the gas take door. That way you don't accidentally chip your paint! Worked great for me and no chips or scratches.
Thank you for the trouble of removing it with ONE hand that you went through and holding the phone with the other,...you're a champ.
You can slide the metal door off by prying up on the tab that's on the inside of the plastic part of the door. This way you won't scratch your paint
Hey dude. I had my fuel door do this yesterday and with the help of your video I fixed it pretty quickly. Thank you for the well explained tutorial.

Smaller hands would of made it easier for me.
Been riding with this problem for nearly a month; your video was spot on! Quick fix less than 30 minutes for the whole job. Thank you!

Your video was great instruction. I am a paper shuffler but your video made it very easy to remove and make the temporary fix.
Thanks man! Just happened to my truck today after filling up. Appreciate the informative video.

Thanks. Just bought a 2010 F-150 and it's got this issue. Your video saved me a lot of frustration trying to figure this out on my own.
Thanks Jason. After watching your video I fixed the gas door on my 2012 F-150 Lariat and the job went quicker, smoother, and easier than expected. (that almost never happens) Thanks for posting!
Jason,
My door lid has the same issue, I am so thankful for your video. The dealerships would probably charge an hour worth of labor for this simple and easy repair. I will repair mine tomorrow and post my results. Thanks, Chris

You're Welcome! Glad it helped.
Ha!

Thank you Jason W. Repair my wife's 2009 F150 fuel door with your video. I am my wife's

Great idea. Thank you!
This just happened on my 2012 F-150. Fixed it for free instead of the $245 the dealer quoted me. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you for this video! I was able to fix my door on my 2009 F150 within 20 minutes!

Thanks for sharing this knowledge. I just fixed my 2011 F150. No more "hey buddy, your fuel door is open" from strangers 😁
randy johnson, Ha! Me too. F150 also
You're a lifesaver. Thanks. Much easier to return that thing that to get out.
Put a couple of pieces of masking tape on the paint to prevent scratches, and try using a plastic upholstery/trim tool to help with extraction.

I did same 1/16 drill but drilled across and used cotter pin. Thanks for your help it made the job easy.
Thanks for helping me get it working again.. for FREE!
Thanks for sharing.
This just happened recently on my 2005 F150.
Thank you so much for this I just bought my 2010 and noticed it flapping a little on the interstate. So I know what I’m doing this weekend!
Thank you! New to Ford trucks and just bought my 2012 a couple months ago. This was driving me nuts and I wasnt sure if the door had just gotten loose or what... this helped immensely.

No problem. Amazed at how many years of production this issue is spanning.
Thx
I am going to fix it tomorrow 👍👍
I'll be fixing my 2011 f150 gas door with the help of this video as well 👍
Happened to mine a week after I bought it (used) but now I know how to fix it. Thanks
I have to fix mine too. Will ring the hole with a couple layers of masking tape, so the paint doesn't get messed up.
thanks for the help. as an alternative, I thought I'd drill a small hole and use a cotter pin. didn't have one small enough, so I used a paper clip.
Thanks Jason. This was a big help and mine was loose just like you said. I put a little grove around the end of the plastic spring shaft and put a "C" spring clip on it. Worked great.
Thanks again!

Glad it helped!
Thank you! This happened to my truck earlier this week. Just now about to go fix it
I heated up half of a cotter pin with a torch multiple time to go slow and push the cotter pin through the plastic that protrudes from the bottom. Then I bent it up to keep it from releasing. Working great now.
Man thank you for this fix. Would love to hear any other fixes or processes you have for working on your f-150, you have a very clear and effective way of translating the information. Thanks again

Thank you!
Awesome! I almost went out and purchased a new fuel door assembly but don't need to after this video. Thank you so much.
Thanks again, for the 2nd time. First time, I didn't take the advice on a "make shift stopper" at the bottom, it popped up again. Wont get me a 3rd time.
I was about to go buy a magnet to glue inside there to keep door shut on 2011 f150. Thank you for posting this video and saving me from having to do that
Super pleasant voice and communication.
Glad it helped. Thank you for the comment!
Big help, I have a 2010 XLT i thought it was a rubber band on the inside that snapped, but thanks to this video now I know what it is. Thanks bud
No problem. Thank you!
Thank you Sir! I watched two other videos prior to yours, but there method didn't workout for, but yours did.
Great video, definitely saved me money. I have big arms so popping the tabs was so I used a long standard screw driver to help pry it out.
My door been like this 6 yrs ,i will be fixing this soon ,great vid
Thanks so much for posting this. Took me 15 minutes to fix and save me $30.00!
No problem. Thank you for the comment.
You just saved me $250 you are the BOSS! 2013 F150 was easier going in then out.

I appreciate the feedback. It means a lot. Thank you.
This happened on my 2012 about 2 years ago. I did this same fix for it. It just broke again today. I haven't taken it apart yet to see what failed but it probably pulled the screw out. Also the painted part comes off the hinge assembly super easy so you don't have to worry about scratching it.

Thanks for the comment!
Thank you. This was a huge help to fix my 2011 F150. Took me a few minutes to complete.
Good video. I would also mention that there is a tab that you push to slide your painted cover off, Do this first so you do not have to worry about scratching the paint.

Good tip. Thank you!
you can see location of this in this guy's video ua-cam.com/video/rNnn0Jlbe2Y/v-deo.html
Awesome! I'll give this a go on my 2010 this weekend. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks, I will do the same. The little tab on the arm is a locking tab. Slide a small screwdriver in and pry it out and the gas cap will slide off the arm. Will slide back on very easy. Prevents paint scratch.
Good idea. Thank you!
well, I made it 5 years and 86K before mine went. thanks for the info depth quick fix. Beats going to the dealer 😊
Interesting. Mine was at the 5 year mark as well. Thanks for the comment!
Great video. Paused it at each step during the process . Very helpful. Very quick. TY
Very informative. Having problems with mine and this video should help. Most I've seen do very little to explain how to actually remove the entire assembly. Very clear and well done!

Thank you!
Thanks so much. Your fix worked beautifully on my F-150.
Thanks. Used your video to fix my gas cap. Great video. Fixed my 2010 F150.
Thanks man. The pin is available with a pre drilled hole now and a cotter pin on Amazon for about 6 bucks or so
Might help to mark (on masking tape or dry erase marker) alignment points between door and body for re-inserting steps! Great video; can't wait (HA!!) to actually dig in!!!
Update for 2011 f150. There is a hose clamp on the fill hose near the frame but on the body. Loosen it up to move the neck. Thanks Jason!
Spot on , it took 20 mins to fix.. thx for the video!!!!
Thank you!
That's not an accessory. It's installed at the factory as a base stock part. Contact Dearborn.
