I presume they would click and stay together with out glue. Then you could play, and split them when you get around to painting. Maybe a bit of blu-tack, or something similar, would help them stay together unglued if needed.
I suppose you could do the middle strip and the front of the back strip them glue them all together and use them whilst finishing the front and back strips? Best of both worlds maybe, with an intervening period of weird looking-ness.
bit late to the party, but you could glue the minis together with wood glue, it will hold well enough for gaming and whenever you want to paint a unit you can dissasemble it
A great demonstration on how to fast paint these figures. I am only an average painter so learnt a lot and hopefully I will get some good results. Thanks. 👍
Wasn't expecting to hear the words Troll snot on a saturday morning. Great video as always mate will use as a reference once I get stuck into my XL battle box!
Only just started to consider getting into a new project, epic scale! So, your posting was the first I clicked on for advice, and, an excellent video with brilliant suggestions on building and painting an epic army! Thank you for this, it has given me much inspiration for getting stuck into some Romans.
OMG the shields have devices on them!!! Now thats a smart design. I assure you that when I buy these my paint job will be of the blob and smear style. Very nice.
Thanks for the heads up on difficulty to paint if not sub assembled, i had wondered what would be best. Im so hype for this scale! Keep up the good work mate, thank you
thank you so much for making this, This is my first time trying anything smaller then warhammer or star wars legion and I honest to god didn't even know where to start but love the time period so much I had to buy on the spot, so this was a god send in give me step by step one day at a time just keep pushing. again thank you so much for making this!
Just managed to watch the whole vid Stu - awesome and loads of tips I can use. Thank you mate - ur an inspiration. I know you have been doing loads on the Old World which isn’t really my thing but I’ve still been watching these vids but this is right up my street and been waiting for this in approx 15mm for years. Cheers. Stevie
Well done Stuart. Once I finish my Naps I plan on getting this line. My strategy - Zenithal the front and back of the first row Middle row almost entirely black with a very light dry brush Zenithal the back of the back row (leaving their faces black with just a very light drybrush). Then paint from there. Using imagination to fill in the dark highlights. There's just far too many to get on the table and I'm perfectly fine cutting out a little of that middle work. You do a great job, though.
I regret I ordered the big box on a whim before I remembered you had that affiliate link. I'll be sure to use it from now on though! As for the video, it's only building my hype for this boxset! I spent years studying the Roman Republic at uni so the period is right in my wheelhouse. Just got to try and blitz as much of my backlog as possible as I know when this arrives I'll likely switch straight to it!
They look great looking forward to getting them 🙂 I have heard that there will be a signal bearer and centurion being added by Warlord games for the Roman formations
This was even better than the last one, I’ve chosen to go with Carthage so looking forward to the elephant painting but the more romans I see, it tempts me 😅
Great video you made it look simple to paint while achieving a great look to the models! Can't wait to see how you tackle the rest of the set, especially the elephants! I watched the video over the course of a day or so as we've had a rather busy weekend so I might have missed it, but is there a list of all the paints you used somewhere? I know they're displayed throughout the video but knowing me I'll miss one so a sort of "shopping list" would be amazing.
Great stuff Stu. Definitely I would be inclined to put them into ranks after painting. I’ve painted up a bunch of Bretonnians recently I put together first and it has its pros sure but it is hard to beat easy access even if there is an occasional risk of painting some details that will end up hidden. Luckily that particular problem doesn’t seem to be a thing with these guys as only visible areas have been given details anyway
Thanks mate. I think someone doing a quick army paint on these, using a dark brown colour spray, and not worried about painting the faces/tops of shields on the middle and rear ranks could paint them assembled. But if not it’s very hard.
Oh jesus mary, joseph n the wee donkey ... those are awesome and inspiring, Scipio himself would be in awe. Thank god Father's day is soon, and I'm lucky enough to be blessed with 6 kids. Dad knows what he wants this year! Just when the Mrs thought she had stopped being a hobby widow 😅
Lovely job. I will go impressionist for the bulk of mine. (Even that will be loads of work, once I work it out from 3 to 4 feet away) But for the inevitable photos we like to take of games nowadays, this is the recipe I'd use for an exhibition set beside the commander. Good tip not glueing. Would you spray sprue direct, and paint on those? I'm looking forward to this but also have the fear due to amount of models to paint
It’s certainly a lot of minis, and painting them with highlights has definitely contributed to me not finishing my previous Epic projects (they’re still being worked on, just slowly), so your approach is a sensible one.
@@MiniatureRealms a pal of mine is going to share some old article from yonks ago about how to paint good "from a distance". I've tried to find something but I always get pulled into something else. On your comment about being tempted to spray silver, that other folk do (me!) I did that with spqr Romans and tbh it was much more work IMHO. You need more coats to cover up the silver, to do skin and cloth, that it's counterproductive. Just do what you did.
@lesliestevenson5261 That’s very good advice thank you. Where I can I like the idea of spraying/airbrushing the dominant colour, but like you’ve said, it often has its own issues.
16:34 so about the gold colored belt, this is something pretty specific to the Samnite people and (with evidence we know) wasnt too common in non Socii legionaries!
Is there any one or two washes you would recommend if you are stopping pre-highlights? After so much work with tiny elbows and spears I don't want to ruin it by making it too grungy. Also as a new mini painter and looking at a lot of horses in the box still would love to see you do a tutorial on the Calvary, or Scipio!
I don’t use a lot of regular washes these days, I tend to use oil washes more, the run into the recesses far better. I try and get around to a cavalry tutorial in the future, it’s definitely on my list of ideas, but I do struggle to get them all done.
It really varies depending on the paint in question, and the context of which it’s used. I usually mention if I think the paint in the cometary, especially with the contrast/speed style paints. I. Regards to regular paint, I nearly always thin, and often on my wet palette.
So Hail Caesar is part of a family of games all based around Warmaster, with Black Powder and Hail Caesar written by Rick Priestly. They’re not overly complex, but good sandbox games, perfect for playing really big games for fun rather than a more competitive mindset.
It's really interesting to see how people used to painting 28mm scale minis have problems letting go of their techniques with all these new smaller scale ranges coming out. You do so much on these which wont be visible. And your brush is way too small. This isn't very fast for a couple of strips.
But it’s the way I choose to paint, it’s a conscious decision. That doesn’t mean to say you or anyone else must do it that way. It’s also not designed to be a fast option, or even the fastest option. The brush I used is mostly a size 2, not really that small at all, just a good point.
It can be, but it’s all relative really. If you just do the base coat approach with contrast a stand takes you a little more time than a 28mm mini I think, but either way 2-3 stands and you have a whole unit, you’ve not got to paint 24+.
Being able to paint them assembled on the base is a big bonus for those who want to play while painting, even with the cons
Yes absolutely, and it is possible for sure, just makes it harder if you want to do the faces on all the ranks.
I presume they would click and stay together with out glue. Then you could play, and split them when you get around to painting. Maybe a bit of blu-tack, or something similar, would help them stay together unglued if needed.
@nzdarkelf2451 when I did a dry fit they did that pretty well actually.
I suppose you could do the middle strip and the front of the back strip them glue them all together and use them whilst finishing the front and back strips?
Best of both worlds maybe, with an intervening period of weird looking-ness.
bit late to the party, but you could glue the minis together with wood glue, it will hold well enough for gaming and whenever you want to paint a unit you can dissasemble it
I really like how they are in 3 parts and that the middle figures don't have any unnecessary detail.
It certainly speeds the painting up.
Awesome video dude, they look cracking 😁 thanks for the shout, now I'll have to triple check everything I say 😅👍
😂 Cheers dude
Really like how the subtle variations in colours comes out. Captures the feels of the period for me.. got me thinking about how I am going to do that!
Thank you 🙂
Great job and such a fabulous period. Paul
Thank you Paul 😊

Love it. Can’t wait
It’s a very exciting release
some great tips in here Stu. These look like they are a lot of fun to paint
Thank you. 🙂
Really nice kits and a great insight into the painting. Really tempted by this one
It’s a very good looking release all round, based on the reception so far I think many people feel the same.

Beautiful work as always mate
Thank you mate, really appreciate it 😊
You made it look so easy to paint up these models. If I don’t win the contest for the box set, I will have to look into getting a starter set.
Thank you 🙂
Very impressed with this tutorial! Deffo be using this when my Romans arrive.
Thank you 😊

A very sensible plan indeed, with huge armies we all have to find a way of getting them done without it being too much.
Really love those new stripes. Easier to paint.
Painitng pike and shot, musketeers sides are a pain.
Completely agree
Another great video. Really enjoy your Epic Battles videos and input. Miniatures look great. Well done!
Thank you 😊

I bet it was an amazing period to study, would have been very handy right now if I did, I know so very little 😂
These look great Stuart. Thanks for the tutorial 👍
Thank you Graeme 🙂
They look great looking forward to getting them 🙂
I have heard that there will be a signal bearer and centurion being added by Warlord games
for the Roman formations
Oh that’s cool, I’m sure there will be lots of extras in futures waves.
Excellent video mate
Thank you 😊
Lovely work on those, Stuart 👍. Definitely looks easier to paint the strips separately.
Cheers Andy 🙂

Elephants will be up next for a tutorial, then I’ll definitely do some Carthage troops of some flavour.
Beautifully painted
Thank you 😊
Lovely paint techniques which I may need to follow for my own set when I get it😊😊
Thank you 🙂
Thanks, great vidéo! Think i'll preorder the Hannibal box..
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video 🙂

There’s no paint list as yet I’m afraid, but when I return from my holiday I’ll look to get one added to the video description.
Elephants next 🙂
@@MiniatureRealms Sweet, thank you so much. Enjoy your holiday!
Really nice paintjob. 👍
Thank you 😊
Another great tutorial Stuart.
Thank you 🙂
Cracking work!

Great work stu, so tempted but need to be strong & hold fire for now
Cheers Gary 🙂
Awesomeness. Damn it, now I need to get a box 😅.
Great tutorial.

Simply fabulous 👌
Thank you 😊
Well done buddy happy days too ya.
Thank you 😊
Nice! Did you consider using Army Painter Metallic speedpaints?
I didn’t really, I’m still yet to try it, but I’m sure it would work very well for the larger metallic areas.
😂 I think if you’ve paid to bring up 6 kids then this is a well deserved (and earned) treat.
I may quote you on that during negotiations 😂
@SteveWade-oh1xi 😂
looking forward for the hail caesar release 😀
I think it’s going to be a very popular one

Will you do a tutorial painting video showcasing some Carthaginian infantry too?
Yes absolutely, Elephants are next, then some flavour of Carthaginian infantry.
Great stuff mate. Can't wait to see the decals. Hopefully not too fiddly.
Thank you 🙂
Nice painting. Can i advise that the Roman shield had a iron boss and a painted spine
Thank you, that’s really useful to know.
16:34 so about the gold colored belt, this is something pretty specific to the Samnite people and (with evidence we know) wasnt too common in non Socii legionaries!
Thank you, I had absolutely no idea. I’m going to learn quite a lot tackling this project, one of the best things about historical wargaming.
Is there any one or two washes you would recommend if you are stopping pre-highlights? After so much work with tiny elbows and spears I don't want to ruin it by making it too grungy. I will have to invest in a flesh contrast/speedpaint for these.
They will help no end with these kind of miniatures
Some great tips but not sure these are for me, but good to see that the epic scale is continuing with new theatres, ancients will give a lot of scope.
It’s really nice to see them continue to expand.
I’m on it Stu - away to make myself a cup of tea and enjoy 👍
Thank you 🙂
The vertical spine on the shields wasn't covered in metal. Only the central part.
Thank you, that’s very useful to know 🙂
@24:22 what are the base colours used for the Triarii shields? Thanks!
The base coats go on @10:14, it’s Aggaros Dunes & Nazdreg Yellow 🙂
@@MiniatureRealms got both of them thank you for the info!
Really inspiring , made me want to highlight… I never highlight 😂
😂 I sometimes wish I didn’t, especially on projects like this, and thank you 😊
Are you using these paints straight from the pot? Or are you thinning with medium?
It really varies depending on the paint in question, and the context of which it’s used. I usually mention if I think the paint in the cometary, especially with the contrast/speed style paints. I. Regards to regular paint, I nearly always thin, and often on my wet palette.
What white do you use to dry brush post undercoating?
It’s varies if I’m honest, depends on what I have at hand or are using at the time. Vallejo Off-White is a common one.
What scale is this? Looks fine theese :)
Technically they’re Warlord Games own ‘Epic Scale’, but they essentially true scale 15mm, so more like old school 15s.
Never played historical war games before and playing this in 28mm isn’t going to happen. Might tip my toes in with this! Whats the system like?
So Hail Caesar is part of a family of games all based around Warmaster, with Black Powder and Hail Caesar written by Rick Priestly. They’re not overly complex, but good sandbox games, perfect for playing really big games for fun rather than a more competitive mindset.
Thanks Stu!
I have a couple of hail Caesar stuff sent along with my super glue package
Ah awesome, the new Epic stuff or regular 28mm?
It's really interesting to see how people used to painting 28mm scale minis have problems letting go of their techniques with all these new smaller scale ranges coming out. You do so much on these which wont be visible. And your brush is way too small. This isn't very fast for a couple of strips.

Tabletop ++
😊
Look like Romans to me
That’s good then 🙂
Looks as much work as a 28mm figure
It can be, but it’s all relative really. If you just do the base coat approach with contrast a stand takes you a little more time than a 28mm mini I think, but either way 2-3 stands and you have a whole unit, you’ve not got to paint 24+.
Yeah I actually don’t like these. I feel the ranks are just too close together.
That’s fair enough, they definitely won’t suit all 🙂
Yes they want us to paint them more quicly and to buy more miniatures.
