And to this day there are people arguing every seed can be beaten especially on white stake. not even saying those were unbeatable by nature but it's ridiculous that even speedrunners struggle this much with the RNG.
People also talk about how easy Plasma is, but squared scaling doesn't prevent shit luck from happening, and as it turns out shit luck is the main source of failure in this game
I had a cavendish break a few days ago, but I got another one in literally the next shop, no rerolls, just waiting there like "can I pweese come back?"
I didn't play a lot of Balatro, but I never understood why a 1 in 4 chance of my glass card shattering meant that my card would shatter every single time, but a 1 in 4 chance of Wheel of Fortune buffing a joker meant that it would never ever buff the joker. So weird.
There's something kinda wild about the *first* Wheel of Fortune of the run not only hitting the 1 in 4, but also giving out a Polychrome...on Plasma Deck ;u; Bless you for your performance and efforts while the game was getting tricky, Cixah! This run was an exciting waaaaatch 💙
Cixah, I know in an ideal world you take the stage, crush it, set a WR, and everyone applauds. But things went horribly. And in a different kind of way, that was almost as entertaining and fun to watch. Like, how much worse can the RNG get? This was wildly entertaining and I had a great time watching this. And isn't that what matters? That people enjoyed the run?
It's theoretically the fastest if you can get those strategies though. Great for when you're just trying to get the best possible run and can reset as much as you want but maybe not ideal for a gdq run.
In general, in non-marathon settings, speedrunners are more okay with inconsistency the earlier it comes in a run. If it only has a 1 in 100 chance of happening but failures can be reset within 30 seconds, well... okay resetting runs for almost an hour before you get a viable run still sounds kinda awful now that I say it. But regardless! When you do it right at the start, you've got nothing to lose. When you do it further into the run, you have the pressure of an already good run and the promise of, if you fail, having to get all the way back to that point in the run before you can try again.
Even though there are only 10 comments so far, I'm shocked that nobody brought up that they were talking about RNG manipulation and the shop right after that at 10:41 had Oops All Sixes (A joker that affects RNG)
I don’t understand why the runner ever skips picking jokers from packs. You can just sell them for some free money worst case. Similarly for packs of 2 jokers if you only have one slot left, you can buy and sell a joker, then take the one you actually want. Just a small optimization that maybe helps in some corner cases 😅 really fun watch!
I'm most surprised by ditching the square when he'd already built it up a decent amount. In just a few rounds it would have been by *far* the most effective joker. Scrapping the Square and keeping the banana was unbelievable, he was digging for +60 with Scary Face and face cards when he could have been earning that in no time at all for free. When he pulled Constellation and talked briefly about how useful it is to have a card that scales over time I could just imagine the poor Square glaring at him from the trashcan.
It shouldn't surprise me, cause almost every game has a speed run by now, but it did surprise me that one of my favorite palate cleanser games has a speed run
some bad luck on the plasma deck runs! although I didn't like the run with the ride the bus and scary face jokers, thought there were some better joker selections that could've been made (both buying and selling).
The fact that all these big time balatro players just realized that the planet is highlighted on the planet cards lmao. I wonder if they know it says dwarf planet on pluto
I'm guessing they counted that one as done when they made the choice to skip past it. Probably a pre arranged backup plan in case he got terrible RNG, so they wouldnt be resetting plasma decks for the rest of SGDQ
Patch 1.0.1f had the square square joker (seen at 22:20) and the Banana odds change, so they probably just said the wrong number. Edit: 24:45 Yeah, they said the right number this time.
As a casual Balatro player - just curious. For the purposes of beating the game quickly, I can’t understand why sometimes he’ll play a larger hand to score more to finish the blind - when a single high card play would have been enough. It seems like using up extra seconds to play the larger hand?
It could be a multitude of reasons. One could be to thwart the boss blind that resets your money by playing the most played hand. So, you do not want to dig a hole for yourself by being dependent on one type of hand. Another reason, which plays into the earlier reason, perhaps you aim for the counter of plays to go up for when the planet voucher arrives. That way you can guarantee planets that help future plays. Yes, I might play high cards now and get away with it, but I want to switch to flushes due to the aggregate chip counts (whatever right), but I do not want the planet voucher to be too biased towards the high card or maybe a pair. Does this make sense?
Get through 8 antes of three rounds each, buying upgrades and enhancing playing cards to score high enough In this case, do it 3 times with different decks with different starting configurations
We're Balatro guys, of course we donate to Doctors Without Borders
Was that a NorthernLion reference :D

I love how every time Gros Michel shows up the crowd goes bananas.
Nice
I see what you did there
you have to respect Cixah’s composure with those Plasma Deck runs, I would have lost it with that many bad seeds in a row on White Stake
Having formerly played WoW with Cixah he is nothing if not patient with some absolute bullshit
@@fastnacht2he sounds like an incredible man with great leadership abilities.
I find plasma usually easy to win, but also the one where if rng does decide to f you, it really f's you.
I had a cavendish break a few days ago, but I got another one in literally the next shop, no rerolls, just waiting there like "can I pweese come back?"
Mad props to the Cixah and the couch for putting on a fantastic show. Was a blast to watch. Great job all!
We miss you murphy! Glad to see you still consume some balatro content
it really was
thank you!
This was the most Balatro thing that could have happened
Love to see Balatro at GDQ! Happened deep into the night for my timezone but glad to catch the vod here
I didn't play a lot of Balatro, but I never understood why a 1 in 4 chance of my glass card shattering meant that my card would shatter every single time, but a 1 in 4 chance of Wheel of Fortune buffing a joker meant that it would never ever buff the joker. So weird.
So cool to see Balatro being speedrunned! I have already put so much time in it this year, one of the addicting games ever.
There's something kinda wild about the *first* Wheel of Fortune of the run not only hitting the 1 in 4, but also giving out a Polychrome...on Plasma Deck ;u;
Bless you for your performance and efforts while the game was getting tricky, Cixah! This run was an exciting waaaaatch 💙
We’re Balatro guys, of course we skip the first two blinds for a Polychrome tag!
23:09 OMG THAT JOKE WAS GLORIUS XDDD
And the “PRIDE MONTH: 2, BABY!” 😂
Got this game after the run, fell immediately in love, Balatro game of the year
Cixah, I know in an ideal world you take the stage, crush it, set a WR, and everyone applauds.

This was wildly entertaining and I had a great time watching this.

It was the best and worst of Balatro, I loved it!
Did not expect plasma to be popular with speedrunners, the range of viable strategies with plasma is really small
It's theoretically the fastest if you can get those strategies though. Great for when you're just trying to get the best possible run and can reset as much as you want but maybe not ideal for a gdq run.

BALATRO AT GDQ IS EPIC, what a super fun run!!!
Even though there are only 10 comments so far, I'm shocked that nobody brought up that they were talking about RNG manipulation and the shop right after that at 10:41 had Oops All Sixes (A joker that affects RNG)
The music is so hypnotic. Such an amazing game!
I feel so very validated knowing that horrible luck with plasma deck is normal
I literally missed this run because I was busy doing my own run LOL
We're Balatro guys, of course everything is RNG manipulation
I don’t understand why the runner ever skips picking jokers from packs. You can just sell them for some free money worst case.

It's a speedrun and It's quicker
Let's go gambling!!!!!
Aw dang it!
*spins wheel of fortune*
...*nope!*
Aw, dang it!
Aww dang it!
Aww, dang it!
Aw, dangit!
this game is so incomprehensible sometimes even to those who have played it and that makes it so entertaining to watch
So awesome to see Balatro at GDQ!
That was a great run. Balatro yeetith, Balatro yoinkith away
@16:24 Gotta love the "Hey look, a banana!" Mr. Show reference.
This is WILD impressive! I’m halfway through and just floored by how fast he’s playing
It shouldn't surprise me, cause almost every game has a speed run by now, but it did surprise me that one of my favorite palate cleanser games has a speed run
This is a cool game. I might pick it up
Have you got it yet?
GG! Great run with some very relatable RNG to fight through. Makes me want to try out this category now. ☺
I'm completely addicted to this game, so sad I missed this run!
Wow, these runs really angry up the blood. Balatro streams are usually backseat driver magnets, and boy do I have opinions...
we are in fact Balatro guys
So it isn't just me that clicks on play instead of discard by accident !! ??? 😀
some bad luck on the plasma deck runs! although I didn't like the run with the ride the bus and scary face jokers, thought there were some better joker selections that could've been made (both buying and selling).
I still haven't been able to win a run, but I don't feel so bad that speedrunners also restart.
11:40 Why skip the joker? Can't he just sell it later?
The Speed joke...perfect. i have nothing to add. 😂
The fact that all these big time balatro players just realized that the planet is highlighted on the planet cards lmao. I wonder if they know it says dwarf planet on pluto
Ceres and Eris too! That's a neat little detail and I love seeing our non-Pluto Dwarf Planets getting some love!
So because the plasma deck trolled it's only 2 decks beaten?
I'm guessing they counted that one as done when they made the choice to skip past it. Probably a pre arranged backup plan in case he got terrible RNG, so they wouldnt be resetting plasma decks for the rest of SGDQ

MONEY ON SALE 🗣️
I keep forgetting this is a skipless run, so I find myself getting mad that he’s skipping the polychrome and negative tags!
1 in 4 chance for Gros Michael? Was this recorded months ago?
speedrunners tend to use specific versions of a game for consistency
Patch 1.0.1f had the square square joker (seen at 22:20) and the Banana odds change, so they probably just said the wrong number. Edit: 24:45 Yeah, they said the right number this time.
Is the GDQ Ace mod available on Thunderstore yet?
We're gonna be working on a fuller mod pack after the event!
15:18 LET'S GO GAMBLING 🗣️🗣️🗣️📢📢📢
It’s me-shell. Gros Me-shell. Not Michael.
Great stuff very entertaining and informative.
That's actually good to know, but there's not a force on, above, or below Earth that'll stop my brain thinking "Gross Michael"
For what it's worth, gros michel means big michael.
What were the game mods used in this speedrun?
They were cosmetic only-- the deck backs and aces looked different.
As a casual Balatro player - just curious. For the purposes of beating the game quickly, I can’t understand why sometimes he’ll play a larger hand to score more to finish the blind - when a single high card play would have been enough. It seems like using up extra seconds to play the larger hand?

My Banana!
Not sure why he skipped Erosion on abandoned deck. Deck is thin already so its a free 48 mult.
nope, erosion starts at the number of cards in your deck
What is this speedrun about!
Beat the game three times in a row, each with a different deck, and not skipping any blinds. (So basically, he has to beat 24 blinds per deck.)
Let's go gambling!
Let's go Gambling!
29:45 Why didn't he play the straight here? He probably just got distracted - but cards were so nicely ordered from 7 to King!
What's the goal here?
Get through 8 antes of three rounds each, buying upgrades and enhancing playing cards to score high enough
In this case, do it 3 times with different decks with different starting configurations
I never get why folks don’t just sell all the jokers they don’t want to duplicate and THEN use the ankh ahahah
I don't understand anything that's going on here.
Play poker hands, get joker and other cards to add big number to your poker hands, keep beating the bosses to win.
It's like single player poker for high scores
Advanced gambling
Average Balatro player honestly
number go big
all glory to big number
"Gross Michael" lol... It's pronounced "Gro Mechelle" in English
Extra love for the pride flags in back - I'm a nonbinary pansexual myself, love you my fellow gays. 🏳🌈🏳🌈🏳⚧🏳⚧

While some people prefer “Balatrocity”, the real ones know it’s always been Balatro City.
