*"It's always about the money."*
- Mr Krabs
This is indeed the age of making re-boots, re-makes and sequels that nobody wants or has asked for.
Atleast for the west not in japan
And more importantly, that no one likes. You can put out stuff no one wants or has asked for and still have the potential to succeed if it's of high enough quality, but they are failing in that.
And adaptations. Nothing really original nowadays.
SERIOUSLY, WARNER BROTHERS
This, the Hollywood is creatively broken isn't joke anymore. Executives don't want to compromise and studios don't cultivate good teams of writers. I want to be hopeful that this is just a circle and we will see a kind of renaissance sooner than later like in the 70s
"how many times do we need to teach you this lesson old man" - us movie watchers.
Oh for fucks sake.
Did they learn nothing last time?
last time they let the Wachowskis do it.
and they made a "fuck you Warner, fuck you audience" film.
@@paulsoldner9500
How Based of them
@@paulsoldner9500 Pretty sure "fuck you Warner" was the main intent there, precisely *because* WB wanted to make more Matrix movies with or without the Wachowskis.
@@killfang9659 Not really, no. People actually like those films. Some of us have always wanted more.
@paulsoldner9500
Hey buddy.
No one wants corporate slop made without the permission of the Wachowskis but you.
Been saying it for years. Hollywood is out of ideas.
True but not exactly, there is many stories that can be made. It’s a lack of creativity and those who are creative don’t get any sort of compensation or recognition. So they leave.
Hollywood just cares about an agenda at the moment, but fans and consumers are not buying it.
Not out of ideas, just unwilling to invest in new ones.
Anime is the way The west is corrupt and creatively bankrupt
@@sianais that 😂 why I commented on this below
The Matrix 5 the quest for more money
Cryptocurrency and NFTs, and now they work OF
More tax write offs
.... in search of more sexual orientations
The sub-title "The Quest for More Money" was already taken by Spaceballs 2
..or it _would be_ if they ever make it 😆
More like Matrix Rehashed
they must love losing money
Respectfully- to both our host and the Wachowskis- it's the camera work and special effects of "The Matrix" that had everyone in movies imitating them for a couple of decades. The philosophy and story kind of went up its own... fundament, shall we say, with diminishing returns for the latter two movies of the original trilogy.
That said, I totally agree that we don't need another "Matrix" movie. It's just further evidence of a Hollywood that would sooner lose money that try anything new.
Have to agree. Though I will say that to me the philosphy was always pretty soft. It was written to make them seem smarter/deeper than I think they actually are. Pseudo philosophical. I can see it's potential to a point; but it loses a LOT when you realize the two couldn't even decide what gender they wanted to stick as. You need conviction, to win any given debate at all. Argue personal choice or emotional demons or whatever you want, but I never really respected them for much outside the first matrix, and I don't think it needed sequels. Most of what I did respect was the amount of work it took to pull that slow motion/technological fuckery off. If it was a metaphor for that change, as some people claim - and I don't think it was - they'd probably have been more direct, or used a caterpillar or something. (Maybe too many Alice In Wonderland references? At least we didn't get a Neo that was ten feet tall...) the "philosophy" of the matrix is the start of the nhilistic bullshit that deconstructs everything in the comics these days, and has no respect for what was. So I'm not mourning they're continuing on with this tripe. It did become increasingly convoluted and counter to it's own arguments as the series went on. Whatever they do with it now will just be more jumping the shark. Possibly on Rocket powered roller-skates. Or a jet pack.
Yes, the architect scene is the best example of this problem that general audiences loved the spectacle, but were mostly bored by the philosophy lecture. Nonetheless the philosophical sincerity gave this whole world a certain believability and also sold the basic idea of the matrix as this fictional place that was created to deceive you. If you take this background away, why even do the matrix? Just do some other martial arts movie.
Reloaded was their finest hour.
There were actually quite a few moves and shows, even before The Matrix that explored all the themes far better. *cough* Dark City *cough* It was indeed the spectacle and style that made it stand out and turn into a blockbuster. All the philosophical mumbo-jumbo were just cool-sounding phrases that weren't as deep as people think they were.
I honestly feel like a new director, with a different take, has as much of a chance at making a film better than 3/4th of the one's made by at least one Wachowski, as a Wachowski has at making the worst Matrix movie yet.
I don't understand the entertainment industry. How do you lose money time after time, millions per shot and keep going. How the hell do these companies survive?
tax write offs
They aren't spending their *own* money. They're spending *investors'* money. As long as some absolute moron is willing to throw money at a production, it gets made.
They hire talent. See no prospect in that talent. That talent creates a masterpiece with little interference. The passion project captures audience hearts. Passion project makes a lot of money. The penny punchers notice and try to squeeze out more. The other penny pinchers notice and try to copy passion project. Some knockoffs do well because the talent got hired. Some knock off do poorly because they studio pushed the paint by numbers route. Audience gets swamped by too much of the same. The passion project's novelty wears off. Penny pinchers panic, focus all energy on reviving that dead horse. And while they do all this, they ignore the newly hired talent who works on a passion project that will be the new big thing.
To be fair, The Animatrix was directed and written by a whole bunch of people of whom the Wachowskis were only two...
... what the hell why was I just optimistic about this.
For the love of Neo...MAKE THEM STOP! 😬😬😬
Architect: I SHOULD have built an EMERGENCY ESCAPE...
at this point I'm happy to just let them burn money
Judging from the 4th Matrix and all the projects the Wachowskis have done since 2007, this is basically a good thing
The only good Matrix movie was made by the Wachowski brothers.
Don't misgender! Sisters.
Quarter of a century building up? Give me a break. They made the trilogy in the timespan of five or six years and it was over….20 years ago.
“What if I told you that the last failure wasn’t enough to open their eyes?”
The Wachowskis only managed to make one good Matrix film, 2 meh Matrix films and one absolute stinker, so maybe someone else creating something in the Matrix universe (a la Animatrix) could be good.
haha exactly what I just said
I've already said it else where, but knowing UA-cam that comment will disappear, so I might as well repeat myself.
"I honestly feel like a new director, with a different take, has as much of a chance at making a film better than 3/4th of the one's made by at least one Wachowski, as a Wachowski has at making the worst Matrix movie yet."
Words cannot express how embarrassing Hollywood’s creative bankruptcy is.
Will become financial too if they keep this up!
nice, the video aside, i like that avatar you're using on this video. i want that shirt
The Matrix Regurgitated.
The most shocking thing, is that it’s been 25 years!
Damm I’m getting old.
Wait, what are the odds that TWO brothers will be trans?
Same odds as that is when their Matrix movies were good.
Pretty much as close to zero as you can get.
Unless...
Didn’t one of the Wachowskis intentionally kill the 4th one to kill the franchise?
That's the theory.
Either way, Didn't work...
I wish ppl would stop putting matrix in a category if it's own. It was a movie that captured tge cultural zeitgeist of the day - men hated their dead end office jobs and yearned for more.
Matrix
American Beauty
Office Space
Fight Club
)Add your own here(
Are all essentially the same movie about office working men who return to a more primitive state and thrive there
)Super(, though the protagonist was a fry cook instead of an office worker, I think the principle still applies
The Matrix has been all downhill since the first one. I don't see why anyone would care about Wachowski involvement at this point.
At least they hired someone talented to write and direct.
Maybe replacing the Wach . . . (what ever the name is) might be a good idea. They really didn't want to do the last one and it showed. A new director might bring new life into the project. However, making more Matrix is just really stupid.
Animatrix shows there are good ideas in the IP...
Morpheus time before the trilogy
The Oracle before the first movie
They are not even reaching near those, unfortunately
I mostly agree. There are great adaptations however, usually from one medium to another. Lord of the rings by Peter Jackson comes to mind. The Arcane show on Netflix is another.
Could have just made matrix games instead their stupidity needs to be studied
Because the 4th one was ...so well received?
Wasn’t the last film terrible…?
Not terrible enough to stop WB execs, apparently.
Did anyone watch the last Matrix movie (4 ) no one ever talks about that, probably for good reasons.
Just when I thought the Matrix could finally be put to rest after having it's corpse dug up for Resurrections
If they're going to do another Metrix spin off. They need to do the Second Renaissance. I would pay my hard earned money to see that.
for me the matrix resurections was a TROLL move by LANA wachosky
I wanted to ask how they were making another one, but then I remembered Hollywood has no new ideas, and wants no new ideas. This is going to be a dumpster fire. Come, sweet Meteor of Death.
Edit: Slick avatar man. I know you've used it before, but still. Would that it was brought forth in better circumstances.
They can’t keep getting away with this!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After that last abomination I won't be going to see another matrix movie
Seems like Hollywood is devoid of talent and they specialize in using the creations of others with actual talent to make a quick buck, but their lack of talent is so great that they can’t even do that with any degree of skill. Like the equivalent of someone screwing up tracing a picture or coloring without going outside the lines. How do you screw up something that is nearly foolproof?
My guess, the next film will be a musical.
Considering what a Wachowski made of the last Matrix film, trolling both a studio and a fan base, I've no problem with someone else taking the reigns. Like Disney Star Wars, however, it's no guarantee for success, but who knows?
Your analogy is also applicable to Star Wars as well. It sprung up from the mind of George Lucas. If it's not George Lucas involved in some capacity, it's not really Star Wars. It's just an imitation of Star Wars. That's why I'll always say that the original six Star Wars films are the true Skywalker saga since Lucas made it abundantly clear that the whole Saga was about the rise, fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker.
Whoa- Keanu Reaves
roflmao this'll crash worse than Aquaman 2 I'd expect...
I thought the same way in regards to Star Wars..
When George Lucas ultimately gave up and sold Star Wars to Disney, that's where everything after episode 6 was 'fan fiction ' _TO ME!_
(Not to mention that _all_ those fan-made novels set in the Star Wars universe kept in line with what was canon at the time)
But when I heard about an interview George Lucas had done where he talked about that he had wanted to delve deeper into the 'midichlorians' and how _that_ would have worked (this was before he sold the franchise to Disney), I was really skeptical about how that would have been received by the fans
"You either die young or you live long enough to become the villain"
^ I know there's a way to use this metaphor(?) for this situation somehow 🤔
Also:
"So they are focused on whether they can do something. They never stop to ask if they should do something.”
- Ian Malcolm, Jurassic Park
He sold his "children" to Disney for boatloads of cash he didn't actually need; then champions Iger against Peltz currently, because he has a fuckton of stock in Disney... Good enough?
The last Matrix movie had 50% of the Wachowski's, yet it was 100% sh!t.
Honestly, they piqued my interest with "we had an idea," which is pretty groundbreaking for this crop of filmmakers. But yeah everything is pretty much just fanfics left and right. I won't likely watch a fifth installment of any franchise so the studios really have an uphill battle to entice this viewer. They're already starting off on the wrong foot with PR. That's a big fat NOPE from me.
I personally don't mind someone else's take on the IP. What bugs is Hollywood's refusal to let go.
The third movie was not great (in no small part because it left a huge implication of the second movie's climax completely ignored) but what it did do right was bring a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. The fourth film struggled to move on as it should've and knowing the notoriously intrusive and risk averse studio the fifth film is likely gonna make the same mistake.
As it stands this is gonna be product long before it's anything even resembling art. That's what bugs me. I hope I'm proven wrong but I doubt I will.
I’m not exactly sure how to feel about The Matrix being directed under the Wachowskis any more, especially after Lilly’s “trans allegory” take that you covered in a video JSG. With how the last film progressed, it definitely seems more like a money grab than an actual investment into a popular IP. Let’s see how it does in theaters.
Noooooo!
AMEN !
The first one was a perfect metaphor for our modern reality. I don't think more could be done unless there was something as profound to add to what they had. Just creating situations as an excuse to do action sequences or pretend to be cool? Nah!
Never seen the Animatrix? It was great!
Get rid of Trinity and Neo and I think they got a chance.
woah your matrix avatar is dope
I personally don't care who makes it. The Matrix really needs to be a Netflix original series. To much story to be told in 2 hours.
But doesn't your theory kind of go against how Super Heros in comics are treated? The original creators of most big name superheros haven't been a part of those characters' lore building for decades. Why wouldn't the same concept work for the Matrix, which has superhero elements in it?
It's not even fan fiction. It's much more darker and cynical than that, it's Corporate Fiction.
The last one was abominable. What could they possibly release to make up that pos
I really wish I could get hyped about the potential. Hollywood and entertainment media in general has just been too consistently disappointing lately. It's a bad sign when something even remotely good stands out as the exception. Haven't seen Dune part 2 yet but honestly the ONLY thing I'm looking forward to this year is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Diggin' the alter ego you chose for this btw.
Cool new design
"tHe mAtRIx exPAndEd uNivErse"
-WB execs, probably
25 years? Damn im old.
i dont mind it. 4 was bad, 2 and 3 have some great scenes and the animatrix and the first movie are incredible. so if the new one is good to great I am okay with it
How do feel about new creators on comic books?
We'll see there is a lot to go into in the world of the Matrix. I mean saying you can't have the creators and tell a good story is basically saying we shouldn't have had the Lord of the Rings because Tolkien was dead or James Bond should have died with Ian Flemming. I think at the end of the day, we just want a good story. I don't think the original creators matter to visit a world that has been built by one who came before. At the end of the day I'm skeptical of this actually being good, however, I won't write it off just because Lilly and Lana aren't involved. I hope it's it's own story with new characters set in the universe. We don't need another retread of Neo anymore.
- Each movie is inherently a risky investment.
- Executives invest shareholder money, not their own.
- Executives are more incentivised to keep their place in the company than make successful movies.
- An existing IP that fails means they can shift blame. After all, their choice to go with a well-established brand was prudent.
- Even when an original IP has such high potential that it has much higher odds of becoming a hit, the gamble is not worth it to the executive as that's not where their incentives lie.
Which is why Hollywood is failing.
It was creatives who drove the film industry, and sold the idea to investors, who either believed in it, or passed on the project.
Now its investors, who own IPs shopping for people to put out what their market research consultants think will be a hit.
Boardrooms are not usually known for being exceptionally talented at making and writing movies.
I think it also depends on whether or not they have left those concepts behind or even threw those concepts out the window as though they had no meaning or were incorrect to even put forth. Then, if another person who has followed the work closely keeps to that within the same realm of the original concept I.e. the spirit of the characters and the world, say for example Batman or Superman, then I think that holds water.
Yes
they mocked the IP with their last movie. Not interested in somebody else's iteration on the shadow of a good thing.
Why do they keep on doing this
Meh I'm not sure I agree. They ran out of ideas for this universe after the first movie. 2, 3, and 4 or terrible movies. I'd say let someone else try, it can't possibly be worse than 3 or 4
This will be awesome. What story will they follow??
oooh, I know, how about: Matrix : Oracle and Architect, The Early Years
or The Merovingian : Style Asshole, Deep Cuts
or DJ Bugs : Beatdown Zion
You know modern sequels have gotten bad because the second you opened up by saying they're making a fifth Matrix film I had to run the tape back to make sure I heard that right because I completely forgot the fourth one ever existed.
Almost everything out of Hollywood these days is just fan fiction, and not even _good_ fan fiction.
Matrix resurrections was directed and coowriten by lana wachowski, and still ended up being... Divisive to say the least, so, maybe a new perspective could help, not that this isnt a cashgrab but can we at least have SOME hope?
To be fair she was trying to kill the franchise.
Star Trek thrived for a long time without Gene Roddenberry. It’s *possible* that something good could come from this.
They should have quit after the third film. After that they ran out of ideas. But yes, the Matrix without the Wachowskis is like Star Trek without Gene Roddenberry or Star Wars without George Lucas.
But all of the best bits of The Matrix, were ripped off from GITS with DBZ fights attached
They didn't get the memo how much a failure resurrections was. Wokeness aside which is a failure in itself, it's not the right moment for a Matrix movie, the technology, the obscure IT, the new internet world, the novelty, it's all gone. no way to replicate it, besides, they think they can somehow out do a young reeves, moss, fishbourne, pantoliano and weaving? good luck with that.
Bro, I was clicking around UA-cam one day not too long ago and I came across the final scene of the last movie. It was laughably bad. I knew it was going to suck. But, damn.
What you said is why I refuse to watch anything Disney has thrown together and called Star Wars.
I’m on your side with it being a diq-move making a Matrix film without the OG directors. But, even if they came back ‘Sense8’ wasn’t good and their new Matrix wouldn’t be good either.
At least Lana tried to pull a Hideo Kojima move, try to close the circle so there’s nowhere else to go. But where there’s a copyright to keep hold of there is a way.
It’s a good time for the Matrix to come back, there are some good themes today about humans becoming machine like (same as the 90’s), your imagined self compared to the limits of the body, meditation informed freedom of thought, oppresion through different limitations of the self, AI art and reality. But it’s not in the hands of people who think in terms of ideas.
I would say, if being optimistic that some franchises can benefit from another set of eyes, a different set of experiences. But modern hollywood aint it.
They own the license so they either sold it or bought it. Its how it all works, contracts. But you got your video anyway.
I foresee this not just going bad but I also foresee the wachowski theys suing them
"it's not the spectacle, it's not the visual effects, it's the deep dive into philosophy and social commentary"
Somewhat correct, but also dead wrong
The first 2 Matrix films were ALL those things and that's why they were successful. They also had deep believable lore and an engaging story
The 3rd film had the spectacle, visual effects, and philosophy but no social commentary. It underperformed
The 4th film had only philosophy and social commentary but no spectacle or visual effects. And it outright bombed.
The fact is that the Wachowskis have become so distant from the real world in their bubble of actual insanity that they are incapable of making something that appeals to anyone. So I'm willing to give this a chance.
The 3rd film had plenty of philosophy and social commentary, but it wasn't as well-presented as the 1st and 2nd films. The 4th was more a dig at the studio for wanting/making the film than anything else.
@@JustSomeGuy I didn't really notice any social commentary in the 3rd film, but I'm willing to say I was wrong there.
You're 100% right about the 4th one, but so am I. The biggest noticeable difference between that and the trilogy is the total lack of engaging visuals. (and the story being super weak and mundane)
Not that I want the movie, but I don't think Matrix has to exist in the *limitations* of the Wachowskis. Other people can write good thought provoking scripts, other people can film great fight scenes. Especially if we consider the trilogy, does that give the impression only Wachowskis are fit to handle the IP? I don't know what JSG thinks of the Animatrix but Wachowskis didn't fully craft that either, they supposedly wrote four of the parts and that's it beyond vague "overseeing".
To me the 4th movie was so unoriginal and uninspired that I could actually see the 5th movie being at least somewhat better with good direction and writing. But yeah I totally agree with what you’re saying here.
I mean... if it ignores everything after the first one and the Animatrix there's a chance it'll be good.
okay, the tolkien/matrix just works
We've seen what the Wachowskis came up with and it's not great. If someone has a better idea, have at it.
Why did you change your character icon?
It is like they are trying to lose money. You struck gold with the super cool VFX, and costumes from the first movie with a philosophy most people didn't understand. Years later when it was pointed out the movies were an allegory for Trans people, people still liked the movies. Nowadays people will avoid the new movie because of the Trans ties, the last film failing, and general fatigue tied to remakes. These are not generally overlapping circles.
The Matrix Unwanted is going to end up being the movie title.
Anyone else remember when Hollywood wanted a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie... minus Joss Whedon?
Maybe they should just give us another Animatrix?
The first one was the only good movie in the franchise. It's all been downhill from there. This can't be any worse than the third one.
So about the last surviving sibling not been attached to the new film I mean considering how the last one turned out it’s not like they made a great film, the first matrix was a great film the second and third were ok they stuck gold on that first film and I don’t thing it can be replicated especially now that one of them has sadly passed.
Now about the new film which I only heard about last night, I honestly don’t care for better or worse I don’t think them (I actually don’t know how they see themselves) been connected to the film would make it better, maybe having a new mind working on the project may improve the film, a perfect example of the original mind working on the film not making it a success is Ridley Scott and the new Alien films need I say more, am I expecting Hollywood to Hollywood the new matrix? Sadly yes I am but who knows we could get lucky (I’ve just received a message that pigs have been seen flying over London).
Unless they take things out of animatrix it has no chance
Oh Goddess no please
