I used to be totally behind that statement because I have encountered many racist people from all backgrounds and sometimes been treated differently due to my skin color or racial origins. The forms of racism displayed were always tied to individual or community experiences. However, I have been thinking that notion of reverse racism can seen when the racist behavior is being used as a political tool and takes the form of mirroring (e.g. we have been excluded from power so we are now going to exclude you from power). I dunno, though.

Yes, Killmonger's origin is sympathetic. But his actions are irredeemable. When Ross refers to his service record as him "Racking up confirmed kills like it was a video game", we basically learn he kills without remorse or conscience, with those scars on his body being a badge of pride rather than a show of remorse. But the left can't see that, they see those scars as a solemn reminder of his purpose or something, but it's meant to be like he saw soldiers painting tally marks on their helmets or equipment to show confirmed kills and going "Hold my beer". He's _proud_ of all the lives he's taken, not remorseful.

Straight up, as a gay man, I WANT to see a gay villain. Like you said, not a villain BECAUSE he's gay, but a villain AND he's gay. We're all human, we're all just struggling and tumbling through life, and we are the products of our environment. If that environment allows us to be benevolent and kind, we will be. But if it forces us to do horrible things to survive, most of us will. It's like Quark said in one of my favorite episodes of Star Trek: DS9, The Siege of AR-558: "Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They're a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon."

I remember going to a talk in 1995 given by a black writer, Langston Hughes, who said that the way he knew prejudice was on the decline in the US was that we had a lot of black villains in movies and TV shows. People who were prejudiced against blacks would not find it credible that a black villain could go toe-to-toe with a white hero, and having a black hero could just be virtue-signaling. (He didn't use that exact term as it wasn't en vogue yet, but words to that effect) Whereas casting a black villain showed that you really didn't care what race the person was. A villain is a someone whose ideals, motives and or actions are viewed by society as wrong and or twisted.

It's funny cause one of my favorite villains of the past decade or so was Idris Elba's character from *"Hobbs and Shaw"*
I know the movie was a bit meh, but I remember thinking throughout the film how interesting and bad ass he was. And yet could've been even more so. (Idris Elba is just awesome, hope he gets well soon.)
I've always felt villains throughout varied and famed story arcs more interesting than the actual heroes themselves.
So as a latino, so called, "poc", I find it rather hypocritical of Hollywood excluding the very people they supposedly "champion" from more varied roles, specifically villains. It's almost as if these virtue signaling clowns are kind of...fake? Dont'ya think?

    • @EverythingFan02

Wolvenstryfe Idris Elba had an awesome badass villainous presence! Agree on him throughout the movie. It’s a shame it couldn’t take itself seriously for a few more scenes and let him own them. He was the best and most interesting part. Agree on the villains too. And your point about virtue signaling. It’s hypocritical, and simply profit-driven for some in Hollywood right now. At best the aggressive “diversity” agenda preaches to the choir, at worst it alienates anyone who could actually benefit from a diverse perspective.

Strangely enough, I've found more "diverse villains" in manga, visual novels and anime (unless animals count, I guess).
I think one of the reasons that diverse villains aren't allowed is because of media in the past with "problematic elements", despite some of those elements being quite present in real life and some people coincidentally falling in those stereotypes--as much as those who say that those "problematic elements" should never be in fiction because of the "harm" it does.
To a small extent, I can understand that. I must question, however, if they were instilled with a distinction of fiction being separate from reality. Those characters are imaginary objects and you shouldn't define your potential, therefore seeing a villain that may share your demographics shouldn't cause you to act in a censorious rage.
A villain that stands out to me right now is Mink from Dramatical Murder (the +18 version). I know I'm going to be murdered for saying that, so hear me out.
Mink and Magneto are very similar in terms of background, only Mink isn't the main villain. He's in your party. His actions are reprehensible and the story doesn't present his misdeeds in a good light. He's as much a victim of his circumstances as he is his own antagonist, and part of getting his good ending requires Protag to help him along with a number of different themes (self-acceptance, grief, dealing with the past, etc). His actions are his own, however.
At some point, Protag visits Mink in his home and it's heavily implied Mink is Navajo (or belonging to another Great Plains Tribe) with the things you see in his home. The game doesn't explicitly say which.
Most people who go through DMMD will tell you they _loathe_ Mink--and it's very easy to see why they don't. Mink doesn't even like himself, lol. There's things I've had to deal with personally that Mink does and I've had to go through teeth-pulling therapy for it.
But I have to wonder if part of that hatred is because he's a minority--doubly so in Japan--and they don't like the idea that someone like Mink can be so horrible of a (fictional) person...despite the fact that there are people in DMMD who are far, far worse and seem to be ignored or praised like Killmonger.
If people want to have a "true" sense of diversity, that also means they need to accept diversity they don't like (if that makes any sense).

If you want to see this done really well, I'd say check out One Piece, in particular the stories of the Arlong Pirates, New Fishman Pirates, and Fisher Tiger. The Fishmen and Mermaids of the One Piece world do not have the same status as humans under the eyes of the World Government, Because of this they are subject to bigotry, racism, and slavery, in particular by a group called the Celestial Dragons. In the case of Fisher Tiger, he was a former slave who was able to escape from the Celestial Dragons, but in spite of the fact that he hated humans, he also freed the non-fishman slaves that were owned by the Dragons. That being said, he never stopped hating humans, to the point that he refused to accept human blood even though it meant that he was about to die. In the case of the Arlong and New Fishman Pirates, they were fishmen who were either on Fisher Tiger's crew or grew up idolizing him, and in turn developed a hatred for humans for what they did to Tiger, in addition to the hatred and bigotry of humans against fishmen. Because of this hatred, they self justified doing the same things that humans did to them be it enslaving humans, or torture and subjugation. In all of these cases, it is clear why they got to this point and why they do what they do. However, it is still recognized that they are still evil and cruel people who need to be stopped

That's so crazy! Like China not wanting the Mandarin to be portrayed as Chinese, despite him having genius intellect and great skills.
I, for one, love playing villains, and I think that (leaving out the evil part) they can have a lot of great qualities, like strength, intelligence, looks, etcetera.
And I do enjoy the complex, not-so-evil-after-all villains, but I also want to have some evil-just-because-they-like-it villains, too. Some people simply are evil, and they can be very interesting and fun to portray and watch.
