My Mom let my brother and I stay up late to see Lawler and Kaufman on David Letterman. When Jerry slapped him out of that chair, we jumped off the sofa, yelled and danced around the room. That's one of my greatest childhood memories.
@@darinsavoury4444 And you’re clearly a child who wasn’t even around back then to understand just how big this was and how important it is to wrestling!
The "this is soap" promos in Memphis were HEAT. If hall of famers are guys who could sell tickets, draw heat, work their character and maintin kayfabe then Andy's a legit Hall of Famer.
Its not even close- that particular episode of Dark Side was by far the best that season. My favorite part was where they tell how Andy was railing on the mic ringside and Lawler and Jarrett are in the back stressing. Then Andy finishes, swings the door open and asks them: "How was that?" like an excited child seeking approval. Good stuff. Bring back the Thunderfoot gimmick.
Jay Leno said in his book “Leading With My Chin” that he was possibly the only person to get Andy to break character. Andy was dressed as Tony Clifton and Leno said “Hey, Tony, next time you see Andy, tell him that I saw someone do the same sleazy lounge singer act. Cheap tux, bad singing, rude behavior, the whole nine yards.” Now stealing someone’s act is sacrilegious among comics, so Andy immediately stopped being Tony and said “Who is he? Where did you see him?” He was furious. Then Jay said “Aha! Finally got you to break character, Andy.” The Andy went back to Tony Clifton and said something to the effect of “No, no, I’m not Andy. I was impersonating Andy!”
I remember watching the fights with Lawler and koffman and I thought how sad Memphis can't get any better wrestlers than this but learning what koffman did to sell this gave me a new light on this he did more for wrestling than alot of full time wrestler
want to know how brilliant andy was? he was 6'1" yet here is dutch saying that he was 5'8" andy made people believe that he was smaller than he was andy was just as qualified as any other jobber and he understood ring psychology he got to live the dream of a wrestling fan
Hello yes it me Andy I’m alive and will and yes it all True and thank you very much to all my family and fans I’m so happy to be in the wwe Hall of fame
Andy got a lot eye balls on wrestling at the time and more importantly he made everyone think what happened was real! He put wrestling over in a big way because people didn’t realize it was actually an angle.
Andy knew exactly what he was doing with Lawler.. both got opened up to new demographics...I wonder who was more of a shock to said new demographics: Kaufman or Lawler??

I think we are more attuned to trolling as funny now, than before. I found what he did funny for sure, but you have to expand your thinking of funny as beyond jokes.
The Hall of Fame is a joke when guys can work there arse of for 40 years, and not even be looked at, then you get guys like Andy make 11 appearances and is in .because even today he still can draw . When former world champions can't get in ..Legendary guys like Brody gets in a 2nd ary wing or stain stasik.
I'm glad he mentioned him not being funny. My only time seeing koffman was on his movie and it's one of the worst movies I ever saw. It not being entertaining felt intentional.
Nope he gets it. The closest thing to Andy Kaufman today would be Sacha Baron Cohen. He wasn't a comedian his claim to fame was weird characters that he would play as real people and the "comedy" would be the reaction of the people to him. Basically what pro wrestlers do but they're better at it so they wouldn't find what he was doing as anything special.
@@jasonfrost6448 he and Bob were the only ones his jokes were aimed at, as anti social as a lot of material comedians like Cohen and Eric Andre put out, they're still looking for an audience Andy only wanted to entertain himself and bob There has not been another comedian like Andy

I was watching that night. How fun was that? Epic.
Andy vs Jerry was the most brilliant believable work in wrestling history.
Really, was a joke

I thought they had real heat for years. That smack Lawler gave Andy on Dave Letterman convinced me of that.
The "this is soap" promos in Memphis were HEAT. If hall of famers are guys who could sell tickets, draw heat, work their character and maintin kayfabe then Andy's a legit Hall of Famer.
And Lawler, the king of Memphis, wrote that promo insulting the ppl of Memphis. Lol
Jerry and Andy changed the business.
Dutch sayin' 'LUAVUL' truly makes him one of us! 😅
Andy should have been in long before Drew Carey
He'll yeah. Andy is a top 5 pure heel of all time.
I never understood how Carey could be inducted into the WWE hall of fame
Agreed, Kaufman, Mr. T, and Cyndi Lauper should have been the first three inductees in the celebrity wing.
@@Principaledpragmatist yep
@@donjohn2695 I didn't like it, I understood their thinking, Drew Carey helped them buy some legitimacy, he still shouldn't have gone in though
Kaufman is actually the only celebrity that should be in the WWE hof.
Not Ali?
Cyndi Lauper as well
Andy Kaufman would deserve the celebrity wing of WWE Hall of Fame more than any other person who has ever existed on this planet
I wonder if John Stossel will get into the WWE Hall of Fame. Get Dr. D. David Schultz to do the induction speech.
That would be a great Headlining speech. Amazing idea
I doubt Jon Stossel will get in if he does is Phil Mushnick far behind? And I couldn't for the life of me listen to David Schulz for any length time.
😂
If Pete Rose made it into the Hall of Fame without ever having an actual match, then surely Andy Kaufman deserves it.
Andy deserves being in the wresters wing not the celebrity wing.
People don't get that there's a celebrity wing.
I loved that rivalry get well soon king and rest in peace Andy just love this channel dutch thank you bro!
He deserves it. He helped millions of people think that pro wrestling was not scripted. He brought a lot of eyes to it.

Andy never died he worked as a writer for Vince then moved to an island in the pacific
About time Andy Kaufman was inducted in the Hall of Fame.
Andy's long johns with the shorts on the outside was such a great look! I laughed every time I saw him!

he got to live the dream of a wrestling fan
There will only ever be one Andy, he's an original one off.
One of a kind, like Mitch Hedberg was.
ABOUT TIME!
Should have been the first in the celebrity wing!!
He kept Kayfabe the entire time. Andy was great

I'm not doing the induction.

As far as celebrities being involved in Pro wrestling he should have been one of the first in the wing!!
Andy knew exactly what he was doing with Lawler.. both got opened up to new demographics...I wonder who was more of a shock to said new demographics: Kaufman or Lawler??
I bet Andy shows up and makes a speech
I thought the same...Man that would be a story
Andy planned it all along. Big prank. Was going to pretend be died until he was inducted in a wrestling hall of fame.
Then Andy beats both belair and Charlotte too be the women's champion 🏆
@@jasonhale3998 book it!

Surely the only thing that qualifies any wrestler being in a main event is how many tickets they can move.

Andy never did anything for WWE
Neither did muta but wwe owns most of the territories so they can induct any wrestler that wrestled for those companies.
Andy did a lot for the business, the angle with Lawler brought wrestling to the tonight show
at that point Letterman was 2nd only to Carson
Vern Gagne either.
WWE is sort of the hof for all wrestling.
