Dutch, James if you read this comment, My father worked for the tonight show for 22 years playing Tenor Saxophone in the band. If you pay attention to Johnny, he never attacked a guest, he led them when they tanked, he wanted to get their gimmick across and make them look good. Just about everybody loved him. The green room backstage where you waited before you came on had a full open bar and a lot of folks got themselves in trouble. I’ve known Johnny’s nephew for years, helped him run a race car for a couple of seasons. Good folks.
I love hearing these stories. I love retelling of stories as well. You know someone is telling the truth if they can tell the same stories with very little variation in them. When I was in my teens I would ride with my friends dad for a few hours every week, and he would tell me the same stories and I loved it. I always acted like it was my first time hearing them, and they were just as exciting as if it was the first time hearing them.
Andy Kaufman, one of the greatest heels of all time I feel! He was an actor sure, but he LOVED wrestling and he drew heat like no other! The only other non wrestler who drew that kind of heat was Bobby Heenan who we all know was without a doubt, a national treasure! Go and watch the Lawler/Kaufman feud and you will see and learn how to draw heat by doing the basics! He could not wrestle well obviously, but he was phenomenal in promos and had the fans in the palms of his hands! He should be the top of that list in my opinion, or at least third with Piper being #1 and Heenan #2. Andy was so good at what he did he put asses in those seats!
Always heartwarming to hear of fans helping a wrestler with medical bills. Chris Jericho and Cody Runnels often contribute, as does Tony Khan, great of Jim Cornette, and others contributing to help Kevin Sullivan.
I think it's funny in that one picture of The Rock that everyone uses to meme with now, hes doing the same sorta gesture as the "aliens" guy from Ancient Aliens in that old meme
No Flair? I mean come on. what he did before WWE or WCW. Just because he was one of the biggest babyfaces ever, he is still one of the best heels to ever do it
well a couple things...first of all...when in the blue hell was he ever a baby face?? More importantly, he was just never a draw. He was just the guy you wanted to see lose to THE guy, whether it was Dusty, Steamboat, Hogan or Sting. The good heels were also fantastic on the mic and would never bore you to sleep like Flair.
I totally agree with Dutch about Vince being the best heel. You absolutely hated him and genuinely wanted harm to come to him but you wanted him on the card. He was funny as hell but real nasty, a real proper bastard. Not once when he was doing a deal or saying one thing did you not think he was lying. His own family weren’t even safe. He backed up the mouth with the physique as well. He struted down that ramp like he owned it and he dam well did. He might well be a kinky weirdo in RL but in the ring and in business he was a dam genius.
I really got into wrestling podcasts by „Something to wrestle“ and „83weeks“…Lots of the old episodes are fucking great and I appreciate the idea of them, but what became of them, is a blatant cashgrab, and all the spin-off shit is just needless
For me, Roddy Piper was the greatest heel in his prime. I think when aheel is loved because of his spaz like heelness, that's a great heel. Or Archie Goulding the stomper, aka, the Mongolian stomper
But Piper, like Flair, people cheered them even when heels, much like The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff who had a little fan group due to their silly promos. Piper was a great character in and out of the ring, but he was always a tweener type jerk, IMHO
Can we take a second to appreciate the Garden Gnome behind Dutch that is flipping us off EDIT: Okay I just realized it is NOT a Garden Gnome but I'm still calling it anyway 😂
James! You are so close to being the beat wrestling podcast host. All you have to do is really try and eliminate your "aahhhhh's" and the vocal fry that goes with it. Love your work, thanks for all the great content!
Top ten lists are always incomplete and subjective. But leaving out JBL is a glaring omission. His segments with Eddie, like catching illegals at the border, are classic heel work. Doesn’t get any better.
Vaquer is chilean but that doesn’t mean everyone here has hispanic last names. The same way that certain British guys has Romero as last name, she has a french last name 😉
Orton has to be cenas last match.since they started wrestling each other in ovw.or the rock since they were rivals.i think orton cena would be the better match.
All the wrestling companies have too many titles. And there is not enough TV time nor enough interesting stories to showcase them all properly. They shoould have 3 chamüionships for the guys nd 3 for the women. And that's it!
Well that’s basically what wwe is doing but just 3 belts per show +tag teams , so what would you recommend? Them unifying the main shows or getting rid of like us belt or intercontinental
I was thinking about this while the Mariah May chatter was going on and Willow Nightingale was mentioned. If Willow signs with WWE I'd pair her with Naomi and have them be the Women's tag champs.
greatest heel or not!! The Rock is the best on the mic the wrestling business has ever seen. no one comes close!! and I been watching wrestling since his dad was in a tag team. LOL
I love when Dutch states something as fact, and then goes on to ask if it's correct, THEN says "I think that's how it is... I guess". And oh, God... Malibu rum is disgusting. It's like half sugar, half alcohol, artificially flavored coconut. Turns my stomach thinking about it.
He's not a top 10 greatest heel because he's also very good as a babyface. The top 10 greatest heels arent nearly as good as babyfaces. I wouldnt even say NWO Hollywood Hogan is a top 10 heel of all time because he still gets overshadowed by babyface Hulk Hogan.
I think of that era though Triple H was a much better heel, cause even as a heel people rooted for the Rock, Triple H they just wanted to see him gets his comeupends
24:30 Dutch is so right , I won’t care about cenas retirement unless he fights orton maybe a lil if it’s miz, as a past cena mark in the past, orton and cena hate eachother in my mind and it’s an extremely fierce rivalry, also can never see orton as a babyface
Anyone think James gets annoyed when he had to explain the same simple thing to Dutch over and over? And half the time Dutch will say "oh, yeah, i saw that" and then go on to show he hasnt seen it at all (such as the Damian Priest MITB botch). Come on, Dutch. Get it together.
I just hope for Stephanie Vaquer that everything works for her in WWE, because the other companies will remember how she has left before signing with WWE. So far her reputation is that her word means nothing.
The only country in south america where they speak portuguese is Brasil. The rest all speaks spanish. For 2 people that habe traveled more than myself, it's odd the had to google it! 😆
Portuguese is the official language in Brazil. that doesn't mean Portuguese is only spoken in Brazil. it just means it's the only country in south America where it's the official language. I've been to Guyana a couple times and most of the people that I encountered were fluent in Portuguese.
Piper was the greatest heel. The time of Wrestlemania 1 with the Rock n' Roll connection is when wrestling was at it's most popular in all parts of society in this country. Will never be surpassed. Also, Harley Race and Nick Bockwinkle should have gotten notice on the list.
It would be easier to do that with a tag team. Could have matches to see who the new partner would be. Some kinda little tournament. Just to do something different besides vacating the belts
I love the podcast guys. Having said that, I disagree with Dutch’s top ten heels of all time list. You cannot have a top 10 heels of all time list without having Vader and Hollywood Hogan. I would put Hollywood Hogan in that number 2 spot behind Vince McMahon. Hogan’s heel turn changed the course of the business, and is way too relevant to not include.
I wish Triple H were still capable of competing so he could take his 14 world titles to 16 to be tied with these guys. I noticed they were hot potatoing the world titles among Cena, Orton, Edge, etc. back in the 00s and 10s. It's much more in control now. They are actually having meaningful runs.
I had always wanted to see HHH, Orton and Cena tie at 16 and then end up in a triple threat for Cena to get 17. Not that Cena is my favourite of them, but I respect the fact that he was THAT company guy.
Growing up with ughh you call him "Stevie Richards" ..it's exciting to know he is doing things with Dutch. CONRAD THOMPSON IS HORRIBLE....NO ONE IS BETTER THAN CORNETTE ...FACTS
Dutch is it true people got Hepatitis C from the butcher because of him sticking people when they wasn’t excepting him to and then him bleeding on them?
Priest has had a few botches. Go back and watch his match at Elimination Chamber, theres a glaring botch when he tries a sunset flip of the top rope I think if I remember correctly. I agree with James 100% about influencers, they are pathetic self absorbed individuals.
Rock is an anti hero at best he has never even been a true heel. Heels are the type you genuinely dislike and despise those you would love to punch. Rock will always have way more that love him than hate him. This last run showed that even in full bad guy mode the crowd went crazy every time he came out.
he was a heel. lots of people like heels. and if you are specifically talking about his most recent heel run, that was the most heel he has ever been. there was absolutely nothing anti-hero about it.
I love the long form interviews guys! I don't have to click through 50 different videos. Keep up the great work. We the people!!!

Love the podcast. Dutch is like a cool grandpa whose stories you actually want to listen to.
Damn drewcifer's grandpa out here catching strays.
"...and that's when I told Dutch Mantell to start a podcast with this guy called James." - The Rock probably
"And then i told The Rock brother, Hey dude tell Dutch to do a podcast with James. WSI is changing the industry "
That’s gold! Funny stuff brother
No, not the Rock, it was Hulk brother!
I'm stealing this.
I listen to all the podcasts you mentioned because I love wrestling and I retired att 66
Great podcast as always James, probably the best wrestling influencer around right now, keep up the good work
Dutch talking about call of duty “Once you’ve been there those games ain’t so much fun” That’s perfect
Tell that to that grandpa sniper who OWNS in Battlefield

I remember hearing about Teeny Jarrett talking about doing talent exchange with the first ever promoter, I think his name was Dwayne
Best dang wrestling podcast on UA-cam is right here with Dutch thanks gentlemen we the people love hearing these interviews with Dutch.
They definitely have chemistry as partners
Terry Funk was a national treasure.

Against Harley when he beat Harley in the cage.
Against Vader as well in the Flair for the Gold storyline.
Plenty more.
I remember every month going to wrestling just to see Buzz Sawyer lose his interviews made me buy a ticket you just hated him..that’s a great heel!
Buzz Sawyer was legit scary
I'm shocked that Andy Kaufman was not on that list
I love listening to you both, great stories, even better listen.
No Larry Zbysko? Everyone loved to hate him, lol

It's called a humidor Dutch.
Conrad asks and answers the questions 😂

Yes, that joke with model on instagram and soldier in COD was damn funny, if you play video games! 🤣
I’m just here to watch Dutch probably bury The Rock.
I grew up with Stevie...he chased me around a baseball field with a bat. Lol...I might listen
Dutch is the man!

Yes James, they did announce most of the time when Sting wrestled in an area that it was the last time being there.
Only city I saw them do that for was Charlotte

Say what you will about Jericho, but he is ALWAYS willing to help his fellow wrestlers.
I was thinking about this while the Mariah May chatter was going on and Willow Nightingale was mentioned. If Willow signs with WWE I'd pair her with Naomi and have them be the Women's tag champs.
Vicki Guerrero, great heel
EXCUSE ME!
greatest heel or not!! The Rock is the best on the mic the wrestling business has ever seen. no one comes close!! and I been watching wrestling since his dad was in a tag team. LOL
Funk is the greatest heel of all time
Yeah because nobody cares about babyface Terry Funk.
Piper became "Rowdy" in Los Angeles. Before Portland. He went against the Guerrero's.
The Rock invented me....oh wait my mom has some splainin to do
The first one of these that made me laugh 😂
Sid Justice/Vicious was an amazing heel
According to the legend of wrestling ps2 game, lawler had 134 😂
The snake pit with Jake the snake Roberts with Marcus is good as well.
How was the Assassin not in the top 3? Did Dutch have a brain fart and forgot him.
