You know, it's not often when Roddy Piper is in a bad segment that involves him talking, especially since he's one of the greatest talkers in pro wrestling history (or THE greatest talker depending on who you ask).
Roddy is nowhere NEAR my top mic workers. I feel he is one of the most overrated characters in wrestling history. He has one good promo against Bret Hart at WM8. Also his best match. Otherwise he rambles, and tries to get by off the up and down, whisper and shout style he uses. I really think Roddy has one good match. One good promo and a career of HYPE and nonsense promos. The guy RUINED the Bret Hart v Bob Backlund " I quit Match " and countless other segments and matches throughout his career.
Definitely one of the best talkers especially when he was a heel in the early eighties in Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling and Georgia Championship Wrestling and in the WWF in the mid eighties before he turned baby face.
In the real early 80s we had a show called Not Necessarily the News on HBO, it was pretty raunchy, and adult oriented. For some reason I wasn't allowed to watch MTV, but I would watch Monty python, and Benny Hill with my dad...

And that is the main reason why I always hated Jim Duggan, every match he would have a booger, spit, or snot all over his face. I honestly have only watched maybe 4-5 of his matches all the way through. Billy Jack Haynes had that all the time too.
On Bruce's podcast he claims he was involved because Piper didn't really plan things out in his live segments, Piper was not beneath taking shots at celebrities in the business (Mr T) and neither Downey or Piper intended to put the other over, so he was the fall guy/damage control. VKM was allegedly angry at how long they drug on once he left.
If it was Bruce then maybe 25% of that is true lol, Morton Downey Jr, was good friends with Dr.D David Shultz, he was on his show a few times, he loved wrestling, and it inspired his show, he loved getting heat from an audience.
I've come to feel that whatever Tom Prichard says, because he's a vince kiss ass, I tend not to believe most of what he says. But I'm sure there's a hint of truth in there somewhere
@@mikerohlfs2836 But did Downey ever "do a job" on his show? I know he did a job to cigarette-smoking after this, but was he ever willing to look intentionally foolish on his own show?
Theory...but I'm sure I'm not off. Pretty sure Robert Downey was on here smoking and then getting doused with the fire extinguisher because Vince HATES smoking. Utterly hates it. So I get why Vince would book something he hates negatively to be utter shit. (Rosie o Donnell on raw, Barack on Raw, Bill Clinton at wrestlemania 10, Bastion Booger etc etc...)
British/Irish comedy legend. Wrote the Goon Show, which also launched the career of Peter Sallis, then carried on later doing more surreal work on his own. Also depicted South Asian people a lot because he grew up in British India, so not all of it has agreed well. But incredibly influential nonetheless.
So I heard Bad News Brown was a very accomplished Judo competitor. Did he ever do anything in the ring that would indicate that? You'd think they would try to incorporate that into his gimmick a bit.
@@fattiger6957 first, Vince had nothing to do with Allen’s wrestling style or character. He wrestled that same way as a top heel in Canada and Japan for many years previous. Second, no, Vince did not think only Asians knew martial arts. Zybyszko, Graham, Muraco and others had used the gimmick.
Well I do care to have that argument and Hogan's best movie IS Suburban Commando followed by No Holds Barred then Mr. Nanny. Actually those are his only (so bad they're) good movies. Everything else like is either unwatchable or movies like Rocky 3 and Gremlins 2 were he wasn't the main star.
The Jesse Ventura "Hollywood is my domain!" thing is a work. He never really saw himself as a movie star. It was just him being the heel as a counterpoint to Hogan who had a new movie out.
Am I getting another wrestler confused with Bad News Brown? I keep thinking his "finishing move' at one time was the "Ghetto Blaster", sort of like the axe kick that Booker T would use later. And, having read most of the other comments, I also seem to recall him coming to the ring during one of the Stampede Wrestling broadcasts wearing his martial arts outfit and at the end of the match giving a somewhat pointed discussion about the level of his belt (comparing it to someone else involved claiming to be better?).
Bad News Brown should have gone to WCW. I think he could have had good matches with the guys they had ~1992. If I had to guess though, he didn't because there definitely wasn't a spot for him in the heel factory that was 1991 WCW.
"If they could've got the Predator to wrestle Hogan" ... heh, the WCW would've done. They had bloody Robocop appearing at a PPV to rescue Sting. FFS! Ha ha ha ha ha h a a a a a a a a !
No Holds Barred was a theatrical release in North America. I saw it in the theatre when I was 8. I was a massive Hulkamaniac and even I didn’t think it was great.
0:41 Oh that was YOU, was it? Yes, I remember you and that sign. If Taylor had tripped up and broken his neck and lost by countout then Steve Regal wouldn't have been able to pin him and get spotted by WCW management and gone on to be a big star in America and lots of American fans would not have discovered my beloved old British wrestling via UA-cam. So I'm glad I didn't manage to rewrite the booking with my umbrella. In the event, Taylor told me I should put the umbrella in the cloakroom and then a security guard threatened to chuck me if I did it again to anyone that night.
Those photos are the second tour from early 1993 which *was* at Wembley Arena, the night Sting won the title. They borrowed the ring from S4C's Reslo for the first tour.
Watch on UA-cam the Morton Downy Jr show about wrestling with Dr D David ‘don’t call me fake’ Shultz, Captain Lou Albano who says “I’ve never cut myself with a blade in a wrestling match” and others as it’s absolutely great
1:56 it's a pity he didn 't mention Demoltion and how the fans were cheering for Ax and Smash who put him out for months and had just own their blowoff with the Powers of Pain whom Rick and Tito had brought in as mercenaries to beat up Demolition.
As a non-American kid watching back then, I had (and still have) no idea about who that Morton Downey guy was and why he was getting 20 minutes of stage time at Mania, with a returning Piper, no less! BTW, the problem with Bad News Brown is that he felt he was legit, due to his Olympic background in judo, so he didn't want to job to other midcarders. However he didn't have the charisma to be higher on the card, which made booking him and his matches probably a tough and thankless job, for terrible return as well.
Morton Downey Jr was not that famous. I was 12 at the time & pretty much plugged in to everything pop culture. He may have had a bit of moderate fame but definitely not a household name. Certainly not at the level warranting a major segment at WrestleMania.
He was a household name for about a year as so many programs and people condemned his show. Keep in mind, this is WM5. It's not what it is today. He's the right level for a WM guest star to get publicity in this era.
@@JimValley they had names like Mr T, Joan Rivers, Elvira, Cyndi Lauper, Muhammad Ali, Ozzy, Alice Cooper, Liberace, Refrigerator Perry, Bob Uecker, any many who were all much bigger names than Downey. Maybe in certain regions he was more well known than others but he definitely wasn’t a household name deserving of over 20 minutes of screen time.
I think that the predator and Hogan look like twins of a different species. The skulet, the mandibles (handle bar) and the way they both hulk up. Seriously, late 80s Hogan on one knee before the hulk up, looks like the predator.
1:38 very risky piledriver - close to a neck breaker. Its very good that move has been removed from wrestling outside of gimmicks where it is designed around how truly devastating the piledriver is such as Eric Young in TNA.

Maybe in certain regions he was more well known than others but he definitely wasn’t a household name deserving of over 20 minutes of screen time.
Ventura has an actual chin cleft. Have never seen that in real life before.
I think that the predator and Hogan look like twins of a different species.
The skulet, the mandibles (handle bar) and the way they both hulk up.
Seriously, late 80s Hogan on one knee before the hulk up, looks like the predator.
5:27 Piper wasn't a Scot. He didn't hae the accent. I'd have loved to see him feud with Drew McDonald.
13:10 This is like how a lot of modern wrestling is video game based only the games got better
“I DIDNT KNOW YPUR GIRLFRIEND WAS HOMELESS!”
Jesse Ventura was also in The Running Man......
Everyone always says Piper was amazing on the microphone but honestly I never saw it and always thought he was dogsh!t.
Jesse was also in the Running Man
1:38 very risky piledriver - close to a neck breaker. Its very good that move has been removed from wrestling outside of gimmicks where it is designed around how truly devastating the piledriver is such as Eric Young in TNA.
It's a very safe move when done by professionals.
Snot annoys Ventura but not grease paint
Are you deliberately leaving Demolition vs Powers Of Pain & Mr Fuji until last?
