On January 7, 2023, an officer stopped an SUV displaying signs of impaired driving in Waukesha, WI. The officer noticed a strong smell of alcohol coming from the vehicle upon approaching the male driver. When asked to step out of the car, the driver delayed, then suddenly accelerated away at high speed. Following a brief pursuit, he lost control and crashed into a tree before fleeing on foot.

Finally somebody got sent to prison in one of these videos. We hear how overcrowded prisons are, but it seems like nobody is ever sent there.
It was "finally" because it was a second offense where his jail time was suspended and then this was his third DUI, meaning her forfeited his probation, had to serve the time from the second offense and then whatever was also added from the third offense. You have to actually pay attention to the specific charges- most are first time DUI, which will often end in just loss of license, probation and a sh*tload of fines and fees. I know people seem to believe that if a person doesn't receive jail time, there's "no punishment" but I'm guessing you'd feel different if it was you who lost your license for a year, had to go to several meetings a week, pay for probation and/or monitoring and got to pay those hefty DUI fees. They aren't going to outline every agreement gere- they're all different and dependent on a number of factors. But just saying "oh, they didn't go to jail so there's no punishment" is not accurate. They generally give the person the first chance to pay several thousand dollars, be on probation, lose their license but try to get their sh*t together. But after that first time, there will often be jail time added to all the other stuff. Sometimes on a second offense they'll get jail but have it suspended, meaning the person has to not screw up AT ALL for whatever time period- 6 months, a year, 18 months, etc. But if they get caught doing anything they get to serve that time. If they're on alcohol monitoring this could include just having a beer inside their own house, if that's the conditions they get.

I always think it's amazing how a criminal would rather risk death running from the cops, and in this case ultimately being injured in a crash, tased, and dragged to jail, in comparison to sobriety tests, DUI, confirmation of a revoked license, and ultimately a slap on the wrist.
