When I got married many years ago I informed the band that they would not be paid if they played any of those stupid line dances like The Chicken Dance, The Hokey Pokey, The Electric Slide and so on. (This was before Boot Scootin' Boogie, which my country band did wind up needing to play far too many times.) Since the band were my personal friends, they agreed, the guests were vaguely disappointed, and I didn't care.

@@KarstenJohansson If you were remotely involved in country or pseudo-country at the time line dances were in vogue, it didn't much matter where you were. Boots were being scooted in a boogie fashion. At least in the United States. As for Toronto having better taste, you gave us Rush, so you win that one, hands down. RIP, Neil.

I first heard "They're coming to take me away" at about 1am back about 1976, when I was 11 or 12. My brother and I would take turns keeping each other awake so we could listen to Dr Demento, always at a low volume because we didn't want our parents to bust us for being up many hours past bedtime.

      @CINEMARTYR Місяць тому

@@thesnesman5235 I was a freelance videographer back in 2012 and I was contacted by him (via Craigslist lol) to go shoot a music video of these twin girls in a small affluent town. He told me there would be an assistant there when I arrived who would help with lighting, rigging etc. I get there and I text him where is the assistant and he lazily texts back "Oh I didn't tell you? They're not coming". So I get on with it and meet the mom of these two kids and she clearly wants them to be mega famous and they can barely play their instruments or sing. She tells me they already recorded the music (produced like Friday, Chinese Food etc.) which I was not provided with so I had no backing song to use. So I was shooting blind to these kids' wildly varying tempo and mouth movements just hoping I could sync it up later in post. We shot in a library or old book store I think and at one point the electricity went out. Because I had no lighting guy the footage was all super dark. A host of other ridiculous things went on. I didn't get paid for six months and when I did it was pittance, they never used the video in the end.

I spent a while writing a few paragraphs here and hit "Reply" and it disappeared 🤦‍♂ So here's the short version: He contacted me through craigslist (lol) He said there would be an assistant for lighting/rigging on the day (there wasn't) the mom was a night mare and the two poor kids (twins) couldn't sing a note or play their guitars, he never provided me with the playback so we were shooting to an anomalous tempo and I'm just hoping I can sync it all up in the edit later. Took me six months to get paid and it was pittance when I did. 99% of my interactions with him were by text. They never used the video in the end.

Yesterday, it was The Temptations' "My Girl" which was basically the vocal track slabbed into some premixed bass/synth garbage.

Hi, Sammy! Sorry but I have to disagree with your opinion of They’re Coming to Take Me Away. I love that song! And, just in case you really meant it when you said you don’t get it and have never listened all the way through…the song is actually about a guy losing his mind because his seemingly ungrateful dog has run away.
And he didn’t use any vocal effects to get the strangely warping vibe on his voice, he actually sang it like that!
It possibly says a fair bit about my own mental health that I have loved that song since I was a little kid some 50 years ago.
Ps. Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys did a “retake” of the track on the album “The Last Temptation of Reid” by his band Lard with Al Jorgensen from Ministry…and it’s about 8 minutes long! Get your listening gear round that one 😂

Sammy, my man.... you know, as well as I, that there a literal shyte ton of songs that are upbeat "bops" that lyrically make NO sense or at best are questionable on some sort of "mental health" scale. I am not questioning the inclusion of Shakira here, not at all. I just think that a wider net should be cast when referring to this particular genre (it is, fight me) of music.
EDIT: Autocorrect changed 2 words and ticked me off. I had to change them. I am too lazy to rewrite the entire thing or even copy-paste. So I will deal with the fact it says "edited".

Maybe it didn't make it to your side of the pond but We All Stand Together (otherwise known as the Frog Chorus) has to have been the low point of Paul McCartney's career and The Laughing Gnome played a similar role for David Bowie.

Obviously, the worst or best of anything is always going to be subjective, but I actually like that Shakira song. "Hips Don't Lie" on the other hand, now that is something that I'd be more inclined to put on a list like this...although I don't think it'd make my top 10 for the worst songs of all time as there is so much worse out there. "I Know My Chicken" by Chibo Mata, "Why?" by Yoko Ono (or pretty much any song by Yoko Ono, although she is a pretty easy target when talking about bad music), "Fancy Like" by Walker Hayes, "Single Ladies" by Beyonce, John Farnahm's cover of The Beatles "Help" where it's played at a snail's pace and he over sings pretty much every note, that Mariah Carey song where she starts doing an impression of a boiling kettle, I can't remember if it was Logan or Jake Paul but one of them released a rap song...yikes, Hulk Hogan's album with The Wrestling Boot Band...the entire album is awful but "Hulkster In Heaven" deserves a special mention, anything by Kid Rock or Ted Nugent, "Beverley Hills" by Weezer (great band, terrible song), "Play That Song" by Train....actually most Train songs, The soundtrack to Mamma Mia (great songs sung by people who can't sing).

I once tried to write music for some homemade Vogon Poetry. Everyone who listened to it would either drop what they were drinking, vomit explosively or shit their pants on the spot. The cleaning bill for my rented apartment bankrupted me. I know some foolish reader is gonna want to read some of the lyrics so... here you go. I am truly sorry.
"Oh dreaded Visigoth, from days of ere,
How your snorklerocketus and dorvalingching was oh so bare.
Be frock thy stod with bewildering decay,
As I regurgitate thine metaphorical bitties of your wasting away.
Alas, poor Visigoth, your filth has no rhyme,
    Merely slug-like trails of slime,
    leading to wine,
    served well before it's time.
    uhgg.
