another route you can do with a stationary subject is you could take three identical shots with the hand held softbox option in different flash positions and then blend them in a stack.

Absolutely! Great idea. I have done a bunch of light painting with photos that I stack and I love the light quality. It reminds me of stage lighting with lights from different angles.

The R1C1 (with 3 R200s) is a nice option for the Nikon company - instead of buying an old used car for the same price...

🤣 Absolutely! That totally made me laugh. As with most of my gear, I got my second hand so I saved some money but they are still pricey. So for me, it was more like the value of an old used car that needs new tires.

Your first picture with no flash shows the natural shadows. The one with the two flash does have a lot more detail if you using it for a scientific purpose. The others give more natural color and have natural shadows. I’d go with the one with the homemade soft box it has a more natural shadow.

Thanks for your comment Jeffrey. The biggest issue with the image with no flash is that it had to be shot at 12,800 ISO. The ones with flash allow me to shoot at low ISOs. The homemade softbox does an amazing job and I have a few different ones for different focal length lenses. I will definitely keep looking into ways to improve my macro flash photography.

with a tripod you could also go down to say 1/20 second shutter speed - this will allow more ambient light in to make the background brighter - the subject will still be fine but it allows more detail in the background

Can you link the macro lighting used that is attached to your lens?

The ones that are attached to my lens are the Nikon SB-R200. tinyurl.com/phototoolkitnikonsbr200. I use the SU-800 (tinyurl.com/phototoolkitsu800) to fire the flashes but you could use a popup flash.

Crop sensor is just that. It's not closeness or magnification.

Thanks for the comment Jonas. You are totally correct. I am just thinking that if I have a 24 megapixel crop sensor and a 24 megapixel full frame sensor, I get a cropped photo without losing any pixels when cropping.

Thanks for the video. Do you have a reference video for a beginner in camera flash setup? I have a D500 and a SB400, but can’t figure out the proper menu settings. It seems very complicated and I have been unable to get even the automatic exposure fill flash to work correctly.

Thanks for the question Dan. Just a couple of clarifying questions: Are you looking to use the SB400 for macro flash photography or just regular flash photography? Are you capturing photos inside in darker situations or in sunlight?

@@thephotographytoolkit Hello, appreciate you getting back to me. I’m interested in macro photography and providing extra light to keep the noise down on daylight shoots of flowers and insects. Right now my flash goes off, but isn’t synced with the shutter. The flash goes and the shutter is delayed or slowed giving no light on the image. Kind of weird. I feel that somehow my settings are causing the problem. Thanks for any help or advise you are able to provide.

@@danerrett3336 Thanks for the information. Can I check: which lens are you using? Are you using A (aperture), S (shutter speed), M (manual), or P (program) mode?

Not a critique, only an observation - at "Toastmasters International" meetings, people learn how to speak in public. One person is selected
to be an "um counter". That person will use a handheld tally counter to click/record each time a speaker says "Um", so that the speaker would learn just how disruptive his speech was, and learn from that.
Enjoyed the diffuser comparison, thank you/

i think the photo is not the best for the example, you should have used an animal with colors

    • @thephotographytoolkit
      @thephotographytoolkit  4 місяці тому

Thanks for the suggestion JuanManuel. The reason I picked this subject was because I wanted to be able to compare differences between the flashes so I needed everything to stay still and not move. It takes a lot of time to switch between flashes. While an animal with colours would have been more interesting, it wouldn't have given me the results I was looking for. Any movements would affect the shadows and the comparison would not have been accurate. I wanted to prioritize a fair and accurate comparison over a more interesting subject. Do you have any other suggestions of a subject that might be better that don't move? Thanks.
