    I’d love to see more outdoor examples. I think these would be a great solution on windy days instead of a softbox or umbrella…If they do a decent job.

    I'm planning to use either the sphere or the bounce for an informal corporate meeting. Partly inside partly outside. Which would be the better option for an on camera flash?

    • @JonSparkman
      @JonSparkman  2 роки тому

      Probably bounce if you want sheer coverage of light. Sphere is better if you want to pinpoint the light in specific areas

    🤔 would be similar to put the flash upward to White roof😬

  • @forgewire

    @9:55 they will start collapse if you keep folding them like @9:50, but they indeed go yellow as they age which is a shame for such expensive product.

    I have the sphere with the flash . The flash is pointed up . I have noticed that with maggsphere it makes the images more bluish more cool . O I increased my temperature . With the others diffusers didn’t have that problem . Have you noticed that .? Thanks

    • @JonSparkman
      @JonSparkman  Рік тому

      Yes - I think the material creates a colour cast. I don’t think they control that too much in manufacturing however you’d need to contact them to clarify

    Hi Jon,
    Really well delivered video, great info direct to the point, looking forward to seeing your work outside with these units.
    Question if I may. The main reason I am interested is when backlighting a portrait outdoors, rather than struggle on my own with reflectors, I want to provide a nice fill light and catchlight to the face. I know OCF is better but the look I am after is that of the straight on, raised up style of my studio beauty dish.
    The magbounce will give me a higher angle than the sphere I believe, but with more distinct shadows as you pointed out in the video.
    Which do you think would be most suitable for this run and gun style?
    Many thanks.

    • @JonSparkman
      @JonSparkman  3 роки тому +1

      Hmm interesting one. The sphere will have a radial fall off, you might end up with a darker lower half of a body if doing portraits. The bounce will give more even coverage which would be better as a fill unit. Sphere substitutes softboxes, bounce an umbrella. As a beauty dish is closer to an umbrella in light quality, I’d say use a bounce.

    I note that the MagSphere appears yellowish in places. I have noted such in other solutions (bought and self-built) due to the action of the intense burst of xenon light acting on the molecular composition of the opalescent media used for the flash modifier. I had also wondered about the ability of silicone based solutions (such as these) to resist that decomposition. Can anyone comment as to whether this yellowing seen here is the result of the flash energy, or something more mundane such as staining from the oils and soil from the hands? I find that the case with CPAP masks due to facial oils.

    You certainly know your stuff, you communicate quite clearly, and -- owning both the sphere and the bounce -- you have helped me better understand how they work and when I should use them. I take a lot of dog & puppy photos and find the bounce quite excellent for that. Thanks so much for your videos.

    Every body says MagBounce produces hard light, very white and specular, but did anyone try to add something to soften the light ??

    • @JonSparkman
      @JonSparkman  3 роки тому

      You can’t cheat physics - to get a soft light it’s got to be big, or diffused, or both! Magbox 24” is ideal.

  • @jasonbodden8816
    @jasonbodden8816 2 роки тому +6

    Both of these do not give very soft light. They're still very small light sources on their own. The MagSphere gives a harder light than the MagBounce. The only time the MagSphere's light would look soft is if it has neutral walls and/or ceilings to bounce off of. Nothing wrong with harder light, though. I just see a lot of people saying these types of modifiers give off very soft light. They don't. It's a nice quality of light they both give off but to say it's very soft is grossly overstating it. Physics say otherwise.

    Very helpful video, thanks. Nice sphere has begun to slightly turn yellow. It’s hard to tell if my pictures have been effected by this yet.
    Is it pretty obvious? And I’m assuming there’s no fix other than getting a new one?

    Hi, I do real estate photography and for couple I weeks I have been using the magsphere and have found using the canon 580 ex ii. The photos seem to have dark spots. I used to use gary fong diffuser and never a problem with it. Might go back to Gary, if I can't work it out. Do you know about the circles it produces?

    • @JonSparkman
      @JonSparkman  3 роки тому +1

      Hey! Yeah, it has a hotspot because it's directional. The Fong shoots in to the lid, and then out, making it bounced light, which generally has no hotspots or dark points. Maybe pointing the sphere into a wall or ceiling would be best bet!
