How to color Correct & Grading with VEGAS Pro 17 (For Beginners)

- In this tutorial video, I will teach you guys how I color correct & grade my videos with VEGAS Pro 17 newest dedicated coloring panel. The coloring panel significantly reduce the amount of FX chain used in the media and speed up the editing workflow even more. Additional to that, having a basic understanding in color correction can significantly improve your video quality, thus delivering professional looking content to your audience or your clients.
For this tutorial video, I'm correcting & grading an Slog2 video from my Sony Alpha Camera. So it will required more coloring process compared to normal REC709 Video.

I like how you explained this by starting with color correction and progressing to color grading, and that you explained the use of the individual scopes along the way. Concise and very well organized tutorial.
As you can see in the scopes, the colors are already breaking apart. To increase the range of the colors, go to properties and change pixel format to 32bit floating point (Video levels). It doesn't matter if you have 8bit or 10bit, always color-grade in 32bit floating point (Video levels). Adjust Lift and Gain first, 2nd adjust sat, 3rd use white balance. You can totally see that the original footage looks yellowish - adjusting the blue is unnecessary.

You are correct that it looks intimidating when you first open up the color grading, but you explained it well. I've used Vegas in the past but I'm on Mac now so I had to use my old PC. Vegas is still the easiest and I get the best results by far. I was using Davinci, man that program doesn't play back videos. I put the same video in Vegas and it plays back no issues.

Hello, thank you for the tutorial. For the final look I often use the blank video track above my edit where you can add VFX for the whole project. VEGAS is very powerful and fast tool!

Newbie comment. Regarding the color correction steps, why not use the auto White Balance feature of the color grading panel, as you have some known whites in the scene? Thanks for the great video.
It doesn't give you accurate result most of the time, you're better off to manually adjust the WB in the software.

I was able to access the color grading wheels but unable to find "video scopes" under the view menu. I'm using Sony Vegas 17.0 Platinum. Any suggestions for accessing that or upgrading so that it's available? Thanks for you help! Just subscribed.

I’m having a big problem playing C- Log videos from the Canon EOS R6 with Vegas Pro 17. Do you have a solution. My vegas keeps crashing.
I know there is a problem with a canon footage being problematic when importing into vegas, specifically the Canon EOS R6.
Highly recommend to ask a help in VEGAS community forum or in Facebook Group. If I’m not mistaken someone able to fix the prob.
Dato Aliff Alex if I don’t shoot c-log it plays fine. I’m shooting 23.9ipb. Maybe I need to choose a higher frame rate without ipb.

Correction must be done manually for each video, for grade I usually Copy & Paste attributes using Fnab script

@@markaj_ Just edit your 4k footage in 1080p timeline, then change the preview to 'Preview Full' and your good to go. Never ever edit in a 4k timeline, always use 1080p - Just render it in 4k once your done.

I have a problem, do you know why I CAN'T ANIMATE THE MAGIC BULLET LOOKS EFFECT, because when I put the effect, there is indeed a button "animate" but no animation bar as on other plugins, I do not understand? How to DO to animate it and make it so that for example at the beginning it is normal, without color correction, and that gradually the effect unfolds, what is the point of having magic bullet without being able to animate the effect? I remember I could do it on the old version of magic bullet, please someone answer me ...
You could simply duplicate the clip and add crossfade to start revealing the effect above the ungraded clip

Dont overcomplicated ur edit with “must” type of execution for same results.
You wanna have the effect to take place gradually from 0 to 100 in let say 5 second duration. But unfortunately the effect have no animation control.
Simply duplicate the video, video above with the effect and bottom clip with no effect. Add 5 second crossfade to animate from 0 to 100
Same result, diff execution.
