Double lapel grip* in the title
I've been watching Maruyama over and over in many videos and my conclusions as to why his uchi mata is soooooo powerful and clean:
    1. He's hip deep which is far easier to lift than further away at the foot (not a surprise all the Japanese do this including Riner)
    2. Lots of momentum with the same footwork as Inoue. ie. Dominant/sweeping leg lunges forward either under uke or behind. Rear/support leg that's catching up literally switches places or is even deeper. This alone has a ton of factors
    i. The forward momentum hits uke's hips breaking his posture forward
ii. The skip creates no interruption in the movement
iii. When the rear leg catches up it straightens just like a hip throw creating upward momentum (as you would do when you tshugi ashi)
iv. When the rear leg catches up it knocks into the leg you are sweeping as well as it attempts to replace your lead leg and plant through/behind uke
    v. The supporting leg helps you lean forward by moving your weight from your heel to your toes
vi. The supporting foot springs directly towards the ceiling for more upwards momentum
    3. Old school uchi mata brings uke onto your back more as you are square with him. Maruyama is more diagonal with his hip wedged between the inside of uke's legs but his torso is outside of him like a tai otoshi. This creates twist as the fulcrum is his hip but he's using his shoulders and waist to create more torque as they leverage against each other. It's momentary but it only has to be as there are so many little things done well that it all cascades like dominoes.
    4. Many of his uchi matas are from a bent over wrestling position chosen by uke. He only needs to pull them onto the throw tight whilst his hips and core do the rest and his legs guide. The fact is he can do this static or moving in any direction. For even more lift he can pull with his arms down to make them want to straighten up so they're standing up into the throw.....
    5. Lastly I can see that his lead foot very often grazes the inside of uke's calf. So this can achieve a bunch of things:
    i. Testing the water for the throw and seeing if uke is skitish
ii. Proprioceptive guide for his body to be in correct position as he always has his support leg inside uke's posture, not outside like in ken ken
iii.Stiffens uke's leg to transfer weight onto it as they jigotai keeping them static for the throw
It's absolutely incredible and I reckon will work on heavier opponents too as Suzuki uses the same angles when throwing people heavier than him. Plus it isn't a fully committed throw like Ono who either gets it or does a kind of kung fu spinning hook kick that has him face first into the floor if it fails.

There's another video on YT that shows a big secret to what he does. It's so different to other people. If you click on the link below you get to finally see angles from behind with the throw. A big secret is just his legs. As uke rises he violently flicks his knee outwards (opening his hips) and as the tension begins to release for uke to go over he hops up and towards uke's support leg. The end result is an intense follow through, huge rise and spin as he then turns with uke and sits on them in full mount. Normally uke in hon lands with tori's head at 12 o'clock, uke's feet pointing at 3 o'clock. He always lands in full mount or close to with his head at 9 o'clock and uke's feet at 3 o'clock.

Ian Young wait, are you saying that his uchi mata is more of a hand goshi?

Hey Matt at 2:07 of the video you say he's doing a double lapel uchi-mata but he actually has the sleeve. He has control of both sleeves and when the opponent breaks the grip he switches to lapel.

I think the most important thing in this uchimata is the footwork. It looks like he manages to make the opponent jumps backwards which allows him to go very deep with his leg to lift the guy easily

"Even inoue haven't lift like this" are you serious? Are you comparing such a light weight and -100 kg? The kind of uchimata inoue was performing in a category like that made him the people's favorite
But still maruyama's uchimata is no match for ono's

    • @thomass.4007

Maruyamas uchimata looks better than Ono's
Ono has worlds best Osotogari though

Thomas Judo can't agree. Maruyamas in my opinion raises his leg so high and that's ok. This makes it a usual uchimata cuz anyone who's able to raise his leg like him would be able to do it, i've seen a lot of uchimata from other people like this. Ono is an artist he has his own style of doing this technique. He even did the best ippon in 2013. Just look at how many times did ono perform a different and a spectacular uchimata. I suggest you to watch him in dussledorf 2016 and worlds 2013, and in 2015 with the chinese and in grand slam paris 2013 the first match

Its not as easy with raising the leg as you suggest. Ono is often with his head on the mat, close to hansokumake. I dont find his uchis spectacular. Best Ippon 2013 you probably refer to his awesome Hane-goshi against Legrand. I personally dont like the technique Uchi mata at all from an aesthetic point of view. Maryamas is the first one to be really appealing to me

      @ahmedmuhammad6361 7 років тому

Thomas Judo but did he take the hansokumake? No he never did. You hate his style of uchimata cuz its way too difficult for anyone to perform. The most difficult part of maruyama's uchi mata as you see in my opinion is how he raises his leg. But the most difficult part in ono's is he does it, it'll never be that easy for anyone to perform

ahmed muhammad He doesnt get the HSK because he doesnt actually put his weight on his head, he just bends down very low and even touches the ground with it. Bending really low is a good tool, but he takes it to the maximum before hsk. I dont hate his Uchimata, i just dont find it spectacular in any way. Of course not many have his strength and timing, but the Ono Uchi mata style is not very hard to perform. Its his Osotogari which makes him outstanding
