As tribute to the late great Wilko Johnson, I thought it would only be fair to make a top 5 list of my personal favourite riffs that the Canvey Island legend produced.
0:00 - She Does It Right
0:46 - Roxette
1:15 - Keep It out of Sight
1:47 - All Through The City
2:31 - Going Back Home
O Wilko tem uma pegada Rock irresistível! Um mestre!...
Wilko is the reason why I bought a telecaster and learnt the guitar
wow, wow, what a player, thought it was the real thing, a fantastic tribute to the man himself, thank you
Thanks so much!!
Wow superb playing mate & what a killer tone, wilko would definitely have approved of this .❤❤🎸🎸👌👌
Thanks so much!! Means a lot!
Well done! Love that crunch.
Gypie Mayo made good stuff, too (Down at the doctors, to name one)
That is excellent - I keep hearing the drums come in too lol
Thank you so much!! I'd love to know where I can get these inbuilt human drums hahaha
Very well done! I'd been a Gang of Four fan for years, and was aware that Andy Gill had been "influenced" by this guy named Wilko Johnson. I dunno why I didn't look into it, but eventually (a *long* time later) I heard a program the BBC had done on Go4, and when they mentioned Johnson they played a bit from "Natural's Not in It" followed immediately by a bit from "She Does It Right" (or vice versa), and it was a slap of enlightenment right across my face. "Aaaah!" I said to myself, "Aaaaah! Now slap me again, so I can remember!" 🙃 (Again, though: that's some really tasty playing you're doing.)
I love Gang of four too! Damaged Goods has such a fantastic attacking riff. It's nice to see how people's inspirations are usually linked to each other, like for me personally Wilko's playing influenced Paul Weller, and Weller's playing influenced Graham Coxon. It's nice how it all stems from somewhere haha
Nice spot on how many teles did Wilko sell for fender!!!
Love it !! Mind telling me how you get that sound? (Amp, amp settings, pedals or other stuff? Love the sound!
They prefigured punk, leisure suit badasses. I play Wilko riffs to warm up. This is how we remember. Go brightly.
Dr. Feelgood walked so the rest of them could run!
Top Quality stuff!👏👏👏🍀
Cheers man!! I really appreciate it! :)
Good job man, unreal 🎉
Great job mate, they were great pity they didnt get on together. Love going back home!
Thanks so much!!
Couldn’t have said it better myself, they arranged a meeting to get the band back together but Wilko was too busy having a brief affair unfortunately hahaha
@@HaydenMorrisGuitar great story didn't know that , Lee was a good front man I thought good bluesy rock voice and played a mean harp! Unluckily never saw them with him singing.
@@HaydenMorrisGuitar actually refrase that never saw them together. Moved back to UK in 1981 so must of just missed the bust up haha
Ah what a shame, here's a link to an interview with Wilko explaining the situation better as well.

Great story never saw that clip before.
After messing round with Wilkos tunes over the years. After watching you doing the riff on going back home . I said to myself your playing it wrong , what's he doing with his thumb on the bottom E string , I've always played the G with my finger , then it dawned on me I was playing it wrong. Just getting another band together love to do that song!
Cheers
Здорово 👍 доктор филгуд сильнейшие рокеры суперская группа рок 🎸 навсегда
Brilliant mate, you really nailed them!
Thanks so much!!
Great job. Going Back Home is the only one that didn't seem quite right. There are pulloffs in Mick Green, Wilko's versions.
great tone
Thank you!!
Nice 🎸
Thank you so much!

Tab?
Very cool...I challange you play Paradise. I bet you've tried. Subscribed.
I have indeed and I'll probably post of a cover of it sometime in the near future! Thanks man!!
How can Roxette not be no 1? ;)
They’re in no particular order I like them all equally ;)
Crikey.
Just how long is your thumb ?
lol
Long enough ;)
I still can't play keep it out of sight like Wilco Johnson.
Nobody can ;)
Where's the dancing?
Wilko didnt use a plectrum
I’m aware don’t worry, Wilko himself has said in numerous interviews you don’t need to play without one to emulate the style itself.
@@HaydenMorrisGuitar i enjoyed your video so dont fret (no pun intended ) haha
Thanks so much!! and well done ;)
too many downstrokes - wilko played down and up constantly
You mustn’t have watched early footage of him then, He started adopting the up and down strumming technique when he went solo. Prior to that he would only strum downwards rapidly, to ensure the notes would come through cleanly. I highly recommend watching the video below to see the rapid downstrokes in action.

@@HaydenMorrisGuitar Yep, downstrokes just about all the time when he was in Dr Feelgood, and when he formed the Solid Senders, too.
If you don't mind me saying, the A string riff on Going Back Home isn't quite right. When you hit the C, do a pull-off back down to the A, then when you hit the C# (or Db, as you choose), do another pull-off to the C, then pull off down to the A, then hit the F# with your thumb (as you are doing). That's what gives the riff a kind of rolling feel. The same thing happens on the D string when the song goes to that chord. I hope this makes sense!
@@BackToTheBlues I'm aware don't worry man, there was no way I was going to get it 100% accurate regardless, because I can't reach my thumb over the top whilst doing the intro riff due to my "manlet" hands hahaha. It's the one riff of his that I just physically can't do, and as for the pull off's/hammer on's, I just forgot lol. It's great to see someone who notices those details as well though!
@@HaydenMorrisGuitar I've got short fingers too, and it's getting the top two strings to ring out cleanly I have trouble with - it's a big stretch up to those! 😄
I've been working on my Wilko style since Malpractice came out (I'm somewhat older than you), and have got it pretty good now. Luckily for me I never got the hang of using a pick when I was learning guitar (I use a single fingerpick, or sometimes just fingertips), so that made his open-handed technique easier to assimilate, as I was pretty much already there with it.
He always downplayed what he did - "If you give me five minutes I'll teach you all I know" is a line he used, but there was more to it than he owned up to, particularly with his left-hand technique.
Incidentally, did you know he was actually left-handed, but played right handed? I didn't when I met him - I said "Can I shake the hand that wrote the songs?" and shook the wrong one! 😃
Well technically he couldn't have written any of them without both, could he? ;)
