R.I.P Wilko Johnson 12th July 1947 - 21st November 2022. Such a unique guitarist. Great tribute to a legend Adrian.
Yep, he's looking down on a million frustrated guitarists trying to work out how the heck he made these riffs sound right.
I met him once in Leigh on Sea, I asked to take his photo, he duly obliged. I also told him he’s an inspiration, as a few weeks before I saw him on the news talking about his major health scare. Man’s a legend.
He lives in Leigh 😎
I met him in Southend in the late 1970s. He was very friendly and generous with his time. RIP Wilko.

I’m not a guitarist, but I’ve followed Wilko for 42 years. First saw him play with my other heroes, Ian Dury & The Blockheads in December 1980. Then saw Wilko two months later with his own band. I’ve spent many a night backstage with him, Norman and Dylan! What a band! He was a lovely man, and so down to Earth! You nailed his playing on this video, just sad I/we won’t get to see him play these riffs again live. Thanks for the video. 👍
Been going to Wilko gigs for more than 35 years - he's my absolute favourite night out. It needs to be tight, as it is usually just him, Norman and Dylan, so there's nowhere to hide. Fantastic.
Wilko is building a very solid foundation with those two in the rhythm section.

Sir, I have tried to work out all of these riffs over the past 45 years or so. I have watched Wilko on youtube and TV shows demonstrate them; I have even met the man himself and asked him how he does it, but this is by far the best insight on one of the best and most underrated guitarists of all time. I met Wilko backstage after a gig and he let me have a go on his black tele. What surprised me was how high the action was and how heavy the strings were. If anything the combination of the two made it even more difficult to play, not easier.
Sad to hear of Wilko's death today. He was an inventive, unusual guitarist with an edgy and engaging stage presence. Looked bloody cool too! A true legend of music.
I just came across this video (recommended to me) I looked up Wilko and was really sad to see that he died just last week. My parents used to go and see Dr Feelgood play live when I was a little kid and always came back saying how lively the gig was.
You've started with one of the quirkiest and most individual players of all time, and despite an excellent attempt, you've shown that there are certain players who are virtually untouchable in their particular style. I'm totally invested in this new series already. Love it!

I first saw Wilko play live back in 75.
Id been playing guitar myself a couple of years by then, and was listening to Clapton, Rory Gallagher, Peter Frampton, etc
Then I heard/saw Wilko...
And everything changed 😨
Quite extraordinary.
Later, I moved to Canvey Island and got swept up in the whole Feelgoods myth/legend/story.
I even went to the premier of the excellent Julian Temple film about the Feelgood's...

Well done Adrian, it's certainly a hard technique to master and a very unique style. Wilko was indeed very unique and has inspired many other players. I'm very grateful I got to see Wilko with Doctor Feelgood back in the 70's and have been hooked ever since. RIP the legend Wilko.
Paul Weller of the Jam also cites Wilko as being his main source of inspiration for his guitar playing. She does it right might still have the best riff ever
I saw Wilko play Dingwalls a few times in the early 80's, brilliant guitarist. You might have to move the furniture around to do the machine gun walk.
Brilliant Idea, I sincerely hope this series does well. An Episode of either the Television guitarists, Verlaine or Lloyd would be fantastic. Or perhaps for a long term task Eric Johnson, as daunting as it may seem, he has a very unique picking style that can help anyone grow their musicality. Troy Grady has some great in depth videos on him for a starting point.Cheers!
Television is a beauty. Don't even have words to express the guitar work in both Marquee Moon and the selft titled reunion album. Incredible!!

Speaking of old 80’s TV shows, Wilko made a strong, unforgettable impression on me when I first saw him in an Old Grey Whistle Test clip on the educational “how-to-play-pop-music-in-a-band” TV show ‘Rock School’
I’ve been trying to play like a Wilko for 40 years! His technique is deceptively tricky. You made a good stab at it… 👍🏼
RIP Wilko Johnson. I first heard him play on Ian Dury records. He influenced me before bought my first copy of Entertainment by Gang Of Four. Then I was a goner. That was the same year I discovered Tom Verlaine, Robert Fripp and Snakefinger. Wilko and a lot of those "pub rock" musicians ended up being huge for me. Weird for a Fripp guy, but I was also obsessed with Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe.
@Matt_Dylan No way! It's so cool that you mention them. So few people seem to know about Polyrock. I have been mildly obsessed with Polyrock since the 80s. I especially love the first album. Produced by Philip Glass, which is cool. I even used to have dreams about finding some amazing album and in the dreams it would turn into a Polyrock record.
Are you a fan of the first few Godley & Creme records too? Sounds like we should start a band :)
Damn! I was unaware that he’d croaked until I saw this. It’s eerie, but my best mate Colin , who is so like Wilco in looks and demeanor, had exactly the same cancer and exactly the same surgery. A favourite of mine, and a true legend. I never tire of watching him talk, there are some great youtube vids of him on talking tours
Wilko had the HH amp when he did a gig in Belfast just after leaving Feelgood. My friend found a pick on the floor, "I've got Wilko's plectrum!". "Better give it back, he's using his fingers up there."
After only a day or so's practice I reckon that's a bloody good "attempt". Imagine how good it would sound after a few weeks / months practice when it's all muscle memory and you can just relax and enjoy it. Well done for putting a vid up when you're still working it out. I saw Wilko play at Plymouth Polytechnic in 1978 ( with the Solid Senders ) and he blew my metaphoric socks off. A fabulous performer - and ( apparently ) an all round good bloke too. Keep up the good work. 🫡
I love it that you take this stuff on. It makes me feel better that you admit to the struggle. By the way you struggle a lot less than the rest of us.
Appreciate your honesty about where you feel you got it right and where you didn't. So many UA-cam videos are presented as perfect, which as a learning guitarist can feel overwhelming. Nice to see someone else being open about "attempting" to get a sound.

Adrian attempts ... what a great idea. Would love to see an exploration of the Hugh Cornwell guitar styles. From the blistering into riff to 5 Minutes to the gorgeous Golden Brown solo.
And not forgetting the Hanging Around solo.

Excellent insight into Wilko’s style. Was lucky to have seen the original Doctor Feelgood a few times in the ‘70’s and Wilko many times thru the years. Finally got to meet him about 10 years ago and blubbered my way thru a few guitar related questions which he very graciously answered. He’d probably heard every one of them a dozen times. Thank you for the lesson Adrian. Very well done.

Great idea! You finished up with some pretty credible Wilko sounds. Tutors generally demo stuff they're well comfortable with, so we don't see the effort it takes. So nice to see a tutor challenge themselves trying to get new stuff.

You have an excellent understanding of the Wilko technique, fair play to you. The things that make his style almost impossible to duplicate though, are the fact that he was left-handed (yes, I know he played right-handed) and the amount of amphetamines he absorbed in the 70's! 😅 RIP Wilko!

Very good, I have watched Wilco's tutorials and your right he is a joker saying up down, up down and stab stab. You have explained some of his subtleties that he does so naturally. Great appraisal of Wilko's style.

I hit "Like" within seconds of the video starting. Have been a big Wilko fan since seeing the Feelgoods in the mid 70s on the college circuit. I've struggled to stumble my way through She Does it Right for a number of years. So feeling inspired to give it another go, thanks.

Thank you, Adrian, fro highlighting the talents of this vastly underrated guitar master. I grew up in Essex and regularly saw the Feelgoods playing in local pubs. Wilco was astonishing. A totally unique style. For anyone who isn’t familiar with their work, I recommend the live album, Stupidly. They never quite captured the magic in the studio. Live, they were fabulous.

Yes he was.
Yeah, it's called "lead rhythm" or "rhythm lead" whichever way you want to look at it. And Wilko is naturally left handed, but plays right handed.

Seriously I've heard this said about knopfler, townsend, and marr even heard that maccarney was naturally right handed ffs!! Don't know who comes out with it, it must be the A&R dept
Ironically the one exception to this is kurt cobain who WAS naturally right handed and played left. But you can see how awkward he is handling the guitar when he moves and was very noticeable during the unplugged sessions with his acoustic between songs.
People who play "opposite handed" dont play well and it generally comes across in how they handle the instrument on stage

Oh man, I'm so excited. I've always done the fingernails down and thumb on the upstroke ever since I taught myself as a teenager. I've never seen anyone teach it before. I really like how it sounds. So happy to find out I'm not a complete outlier there :)

Mick Green was mentioned, saw him with JK and the Pirates, just a Tele and AC30 absolutely amazing. Would be nice to do a show or two on maybe “ My Babe” and “ Casting my Spell” both showcasing his brilliant guitar playing. Love your tutorials.
Funny thing with Mick who I played with on a recording in London back in 1993, was that he sounded the same nomatter amp.. Never used pedals or tuner..(Only tuned by ear). He said he found such gadgets "confusing"..
He was a very nice guy.. (And he drove a red Volvo to the studio in Camden that we used)..
Last time I met him was at a Pirates gig here in Stockholm a few years later.. We had a great chat and a few beers after their gig.. Miss him. He was an inspiration..
