- Toontrack EZDrummer2 is a fantastic tool for home studio songwriters. With up to 32 outputs it's quite flexible when it comes to mixing.
In this video I'll show you the basic steps to setting up multichannel routing for EZDrummer 2, as well as the REAPER Track Template that I use which saves considerable time and effort.
Skip to 6:35 to see the Track Template in use.
Go to reaperblog.net/subscribe/ to sign up for the newsletter and get the Track Template and a MIDI Note Names, plus other goodies. An email will go out later today for existing subscribers with updated download link.
At 4:50 I mention the Post-Rock EZX. See my review here

I had no idea about the track manager! This seems so useful when my mixer is overloaded with single tracks, thanks dude!!

This is EXACTLY what I wanted to see, thanks!
Thanks for the video! just decided to take on drum programming for one of my bands, and I was struggling getting the routing figured out. Probably saved me a few hours of tinkering!
I am learning so much with your tutorials. Thank you. Subscribed to your channel.
Exactly what I needed. Thanks! Subbing.
love the panning idea to gain more sends, also I'm pretty sure some of the other kits and mixes give you individual toms or at least seperate rack and floor toms.
Excellent, excellent thank you
Very useful, Thanks!!
Muchas gracias!
Awesome thanks a bunch!
this is great! Would be awesome to see a follow up with how you'd mix them i.e. routing plug-ins etc. for an amazing sound 😀
Good idea. It's coming up.
I think organizing vsts by plugin types (eqs, comps, delays, imagers etc...) is a better and faster way to navigate instead of organizing them by manufacturers.
And you can put them in more than just one folder if they have various features.
Really accurate video, thanks! Your ez is a 32 bit version ?
very helpful ;)
I thanks a lot for the template, How can I still assign my midi keyboard to the MIDI input of EZ drummer ? I can no longer see it in the inputs as I saw it before
I see no temple for me to download. In the video you said you would share the template for download. What am I missing, or not seeing here? Usually, I would do that via the description section. Thanks!
Once I've set up multichannel routing of an EZDrummer 2 drum beat (as you showed in your EZ Drummer 2 Routing & Track Template video) is it possible to assign those tracks to individual keys on my midi keyboard so that I can create a new drum beat using my midi keyboard?
how do you pan instruments when they are all coming out of the same ambience channels? For example, I have 2 instruments with their own fader but both also go out the ambience channels so how could I pan those L & R when they don't have their own ambience channels?
I noticed that if I replace the kick with a Metal Machine expansion kick it only routes to the “kick in” even when I have the mono sends arranged properly. Is the because the Metal Machine expansion uses a left and right kick kick drum?
I have configurations on EZDrummer with more than 16 outputs, but you can't route them all to individual tracks because the dropdown menu on the mixer is limited to 16 channels. Is there any way to change this?
How do I get audio files for the drum tracks into reaper?
All I'm getting is grey boxes with some colors.
Thank you very much for the template ! ! ! .
It would be great if you created one for Superior Drummer 3 .
From already thank you very much .
Greetings ! ! ! . ツ
does anyone know why my kick drum always activates the snare? none of the others do that
How can you keep the effects on all tracks instead of them being removed?
Hey...thanks for this tutorial. Did I get you right? The toms, are they all on one channel or can you route the toms to different channels? You mentioned something about limitations?
yeah you can't process each tom separately. its a limitation of EZ Drummer. there's no bleed on the toms though so you don't have to deal with most of the tom mixing issues.
Ok then, thanks for the feedback.
When I clicked on EZD2 in the FX browser, I wasn't given the choice to Build Routing Conformation? am I missing something? Thanks
You need to add it as a track. Insert> virtual instrument on new track > double click ezdrummer2
@@TheREAPERBlog Kinda some SUPER VITAL information you left out of the main video.
@@nathnullobject its in the first minute
If I understand correctly, everytime you change kits, the mixer outputs change so you can't just create several seperate output tracks in Reaper and be done with it. You need to readjust your routing everytime you change kits in EZ Drummer 2. Correct?
I think you just need to make the template once. In the preset menu make sure that 'preset sets routing' is OFF. If there's anything that doesn't work you can always make updated 'original mix' presets for each library.
Where is the template?
I noticed there is a parallel compression bus on my console in cakewalk. I definitely didn't make it. Is it from having the EZ drummer on there? Does it do it automatically? It's a bus already labeled parallel compression and has a send already in it. Same thing with the toms and cymbals.
I'm not a cakewalk user… 🤷♂️
How do I download the template? I'm already subscribed to the newletter
I sent an email today with the updated bundle. You didn't get it?
Is there anywhere I can get a slightly more in-depth explanation of the mono send trick for the kick. I just want to get my head around it.
the outputs in the ez drummer mixer are each 2-channels. The mic on the kick is mono so we pan that hard left, and another sound hard right.
Imagine there are two cables coming out of the ezdrummer mixer. if the kick is panned center its equal volume in both. If we pan it left only the first cable gets any signal.
When it gets to reaper's mixer we just pick up 1 of those two signals for each track. With the pan center there we hear it in both speakers.
@@TheREAPERBlog great response - thank you.
can you explain please how to separate OH to individual chanels in ezdrums??
Can’t be done
Any troubleshooting tips? I followed the steps to a tee yet I do not see the the meters on the individual tracks. Instead they all appear in the primary ezdrummer track, very small and nothing in each track individually.
Did you try arming each individual track?
@@junglekreepergardens2012 I got it to work.
How did you get ezdrummer into your effect list? I think it's supposed to be in VSTi?
same thing really. its under instruments, and vsti
@@TheREAPERBlog I'm in the process of switching computers. EZdrummer does not show up in any of the VST/FX lists. I've tried uninstall/install both programs (I think you have to do reaper first, then EZD), manually drag and drop. Editing the paths. No go. The old computer had no issues. I'm stuck.
How do you even get EZ Drummer 2 to show up in reaper. I understand everything you have done but, at the beginning when you select EZ Drummer..how to i get EZ Drummer to show up there so i can select it?
Once you have Ezdrummer 2 installed, open it and go to Help -> Show Plug-In Path. Then go to Reaper, and then Options -> Preferences -> Plug-ins -> VST. Copy the Ezdrummer 2 VST path that you saw in the box, or click Edit -> Add Path and look for it (do not click the Ezdrummer.dll file, Reaper only asks for the folder).
Hope that helped.
I downloaded the reaperblog_downloads_06_23_2020 but I don´t know how to open the templates in Ezdrummer in Reaper. Do you have any instructions for that?
my track templates folder merges with reaper's track templates folder.
You can get to reaper's folders with Options menu, "show reaper resource path in explorer/finder"
I found it, thanks !! :)
where can I find the drum template ?
Here : reaperblog.net/2017/07/ez-drummer-2-template/
so I clicked the link and I subscribed to the mailing list and it still won't let me download the track template so thanks for nothing I guess?
can you send me the reaper file with the ez drummer routing etc everything all setup?
No.
kurt ballou!
