I’m always impressed with Lee’s deep knowledge of 90’s hip hop 🔥
Akwafina's acting in this film was amazing. Completely surprised by her performance. She's always playing the comedy type roles so really refreshing to see the change in this role.
I love Li's random insertion of pop culture knowledge in these reaction videos. It's astonishing
The director said that she didn't want Akwafina's Chinese to be very fluent to highlight the fact that Billi was disconnected from her family and home country. Something that happens to a lot of second-generation immigrants.
Nice catch at the end: "looks like Nai Nia's sister..." That's because Nai Nai's sister is played by Lulu Wang's grandmother's sister.
LuLu Wangs Grandmother did not find out about her cancer until the movie came out in 2019.
They kept it a secret for 6 years because she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2013.
This movie made me feel so many feels 🤍 coming as a first generation Latina I could relate to some of Bilis experiences but also having not seen as many first gen Asian movies this did so well in encapsulating such a particular and lovely story. Thank you guys for your hard work and for sharing of yourself with the world 💐✨
Lee is a walking hiphop and rnb encyclopedia jeeeeeezus what a genius!!!!!
Lee is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge.
I saw this movie with a Chinese friend, something fairly similar happened in her family. I had no idea. She cried during the whole movie and I did too. It's a beautiful movie, but very emotional.
Akwafina is really cool. I've always liked her acting and her humor. Gonna watch this movie now.
You guys have black cat and golden retriever energy and it’s so cute 🥹
That was fantastic insight from both of you, from the different dialects to customs (I love learning about language etymology, even though I'm terrible at speaking different languages). Would love to see your watch-a-longs of Red Cliff, Tai Chi Hero/Hero/Zero, Stephen Chow films, and anything Donnie Yen does. He's an international treasure.
I love Awkwafina. Ever since *that* song.
Btw: “you don’t just marry the person, you marry the family” is pretty common in the West, too. For many centuries.
I haven’t seen this movie yet, now I will!
Thanks for the review! 谢谢
A big difference between China and Europe historically was the rule of primogeniture which meant the first born boy was all important. So if there were 4 sons born, once the father died, the first born was entitled to inherit EVERYTHING. In China at the death of the father all sons got equal shares. This is a very different approach to family. NB primogeniture continued in British monarchy until 2011!!! No wonder the "royal" kids are so messed up. 😁😁
Thank you so much for reacting to this movie Jessie! love you and this movie so much keep up the good work❤️
I’m so glad you guys are reacting to this one! I’m a second generation Japanese-American, and I love this film although I don’t understand any Chinese languages. I’m really interested in your take.
Always love both your commentary! 😍
Excellent video. I just found this channel and I enjoyed watching. Thanks!
yay, more movie reactions :D more, more, more 😁
Another great review. Keep doing what you’re doing. I think Lee will love this… 0:02 with his green t-shirt and the round light you use reflected in his glasses he looks like he’s about to transform into 1980’s Incredible Hulk. Lee smash!!!
看這個視頻讓我哭了。 現在我想再看一遍這部電影。謝謝
谢谢做了这个视频!对帮我学中文很有用
我应该看这个电影,看起来很好!
My family lives in Hong Kong and when my grandfather started getting sick, they put him in a nursing facility. They did not tell my grandmother after he had passed away for a while, to protect her. I am not sure how typical this is but that one scene reminded me of it because my family also told me work was more important than travelling for his illness or funeral
There are some cultures in the West that have the collectivism viewpoint. My family is Native (US/Mexico) and I grew up in a multigenerational household with my mother's parents. My husband is white and was surprised when I told him that he would be marrying into my family and since I'm an only child, we expected him to take my family name. That's just how our traditions are but to the average white American, it was quite a culture shock.
This was a beautiful movie, Awkwafina should do more drama movies, she’s very talented
Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!
非常好的反应视频,好的服装和评论!爱来自我们❤️,英雄联盟😃
Northern mandarin accent always sound so tense😂😂 I like your southern mandarin accent😂😂
A24 has been fire!!
I came from South Europe and about 2 decades ago when you were marrying someone you were marrying his family too. Possibly living all together too. (Especially in the countryside. Now it’s more rare.). Things have changed a lot now and the north European way combined with the American style. So even if the Mediterranean countries have changed, they are still more family oriented than other countries in the west!
I found so much similarities with Chinese culture about family and raising kids with my country.
When you say "Western" I think you refer to all laowai, but there's a huge difference between Western Europe and US, and the rest. In my country in Eastern Europe, the relation between parents and kids the same as you describe - parents sacrifice a lot to raise their kids, later help us raise our own kids and we feel that we owe a lot to them for the whole life.
I have seen people from east asia especially take something that is pretty esclusive to the US and take the rest of the west to be like that. In fairness though it absolutely happens the opposite direction too. I think it probably comes from a place of ignorance/ more awareness of America than other places.
I'm starting to think the whole kick the kid out at 18 is more anglo saxon thing specifically.
You should react to Everything Everywhere All at Once!
They did. About 8 months ago.
Just one small correction, dowry is paid by bride family to groom or grooms family, while what you are talking about I believe is "bride price", where the groom family pays brides family.
I’d love to see you react to Saving Face. It’s an American film by a Chinese American filmmaker about a woman that struggles with revealing her sexuality to her widowed Chinese mother but soon discovers her mother has a secret of her own when she becomes pregnant from an unknown partner. It looks at the clash between progressive ideals in a more traditional culture.
Yess love that movie
You say at the end that akwafina definitely learned chinse for this role. Could you expand onwhyyou think that? Can anyone confirm that? Because I would hav guessed that she didn't.
(Not meant as a critique, just curious)
Hello, I commented on that video with the two set violinists, can you make a reaction of WayV Ten speaking chinese like you did to Jackson?
From bangladesh
Chinese culture has so many similarities to some South African cultures.
You haven't seen Akwafina in Crazy Rich Asians?
Literally editing it now haha
Italia Is very similar to china
Hiii
I love you
haven't watched the video yet but your outfit + hair + makeup are on point
可能评论里的人可哟告诉我,用中文怎么说 ?
How are u
I will say that as a European I feel that the “east/west” dichotomy is way overplayed, especially because it’s usually just “China/the US,” seems like. It’s just a bit oversimplified for me, I guess. But I think it accurately describes how ABC, for example, feel, and it’s a good kind of artistic metaphor; like in this movie
奶奶的妹妹是導演真正的奶奶的妹妹。奶奶的妹妹的狗狗也是導演真正的奶奶的妹妹的狗狗。
I don't get why reactors don't just look up the cast list first instead of talking over really important dialogue trying to guess what other films an actor was in. Not the worst example of it, but seems to be a common thread.
Please react to "Farewell My Concubine" (1993).
I asked my mom to watch it with me and the whole time shes commenting on how ugly awkwafina is 😓
Go back to China is truly a terrible movie.
