Lee really knows his film and music history 👍🏽
Btw, his gut instinct is right. The Last Dragon was a Motown Records production, which is why the soundtrack has famous Motown artists like Stevie Wonder, DeBarge, and Smokey Robinson on the soundtrack, among other artists 😉
The last guy you'd expect to be an expert on the late 70's NY club scene and early hip hop history. He could teach a class. (Or make a video)
The female lead was named Vanity. She led the Pop/R&B group called Vanity 6 back in the 80’s. They had a big hit with the song “Nasty Girl” written by Prince. Whom she also dated.
Thank you guys for watching this movie. I watched this constantly in the 80's as a kid.
Lee has an amazing comprehension of US music and movie history . Both of your have an eye for details that I would not notice - great video review !
There was some Japanese customs in the movie because the main actor studied a martial arts style called Chinese Goju which was a mix of Kung Fu & Karate. Really enjoyed the video, keep up the great work.
Yes, plus America and New York City especially is a melting pot of people from all over the world who bring their own unique customs and cultures here which influence our own culture.
Yes Taimak was a student of Ron van Clief who was the founder of Chinese Goju, he combined Kung Fu with Goju Ryu style karate and kickboxing
I love you guys perspective, I’m African American and grew up in the 80’s this movie was apart of black culture it’s interesting to hear you guys break it down from an Asian perspective.
Pretty cool. Thank you
Never seen one of their reactions before.. this dudes knowledge of the culture is impressive. Mad respect to you sir. This movie is one of my childhood favorites along with Bloodsport, Kickboxer and No Retreat No Surrender… American Ninja 1 and 2 were decent too.
Haha yes Michael Dudikoff in American Ninja, sounds like you and I grew up on the same VHS tapes
@@carsilk2492 Definitely sounds like it! It was the best era for martial arts cinema in my opinion.
Nice reaction & commentary. Y'all are funny and Lee's cultural insights are a nice addition. 👍
Lee is a fountain of hiphop knowledge, he really knows his stuff
Ehhhh, A-. He missed minor things. But definitely expressive.
One of my all time favorites... Tai Mak is genius in this as are Vanity and ShoNuff. Jessie you're enthusiasm is as infectious as your aesthetic allure. Lee_ you're the man. Way to be on point with the factoids. You sir are a cultural ambassador... bless you guys
This guy knows more about hip hop than I do and I'm Black, American, and older than him. WTF.
Homework time
My guy really knows his hip-hop, impressed. Classic movie
Straight panned hilarity from Lee and he know his music and films! Salute my g
This film is culturally significant to black Americans because blacks like and admire asian culture.
Asians went through a lot of the same types of racism and segregation as blacks. Just not as severe.
*Leroy in the film was always the master and had the glow. He just didn't believe it was himself. Very good observation by him catching the arrow*
Yeah looking back his tang suit (i think that's what he called it?) outfit was in poor taste but when we were younger we thought he looked cool in it.
@@zenbyoI didn't. I was 10. I knew it was part of th plot. He didn't fit in. I also lived in NYC at the time. So I guess I identified with Leroys little brother. His clothes were fresh!
This movie meant a lot to Mexicans too. We didn't have Mexican movie heroes. To see somebody different that wasn't white. Meant a lot to us. Mexican parents used to take us to China town in l.a. to watch movies. 😍
I just got through your intro, and man... Lee is the friggin' king. Not only is he so chill and easy going, but his historical knowledge is so incredibly deep, spanning thousands of miles. Is history and pop culture something he's really into or something?
Someday you two will have to do a USA tour and experience the various spots where things were born (hip hop, Tea Party, Civil War battlegrounds, etc.).
Haha yeah, Lee is a hip-hop producer, pop culture and history is kinda his thing.
And we do wanna visit the US, especially New York sometime!
Check out Geography Now China
@@ChinesewithJessie Ah ok, that makes total sense, then. That's awesome!
There's so many places in the USA to go. Like China, you'd either have to live here for years to see a handful of things, or make trips each year to specific places. Either way, I hope you two can make it over sometime. That'd be great!!
It was enjoyable hearing your comments throughout the movie. The Last Dragon is a favorite of many black americans that grew up in the 80s. Thanks for the laughs!
Wow I was really impressed with Lee's knowledge! Felt like I was learning a lot while watching yall react.
This is my first time seeing your channel and I am in love with your movie reactions. IJessie is adorable with the facial expressions and comments and Lee is so damn smart! love how knowledgeable you guys are when it comes to art and history. I came for the reaction but I got a history lesson as well!! I also watched the crouching tiger, hidden dragon movie reaction and I kept watching because of all the history lessons. You guys really put effort in your videos. I subscribed!!!
Thank you! We'll make more of these!
These videos are the best, Lee brings a lot of knowledge! You both put what you know together in a really helpful way
This is legit my favorite movie of all time. It’s a pure classic. Hopefully you guys give it some rewatched in the future because I’ve legit been watching this movie since I was like 3 years old. I’m in my 20’s now. It just has so much charm and love.
I've been watching it since it came out and I'm 47.
I’m so glad I found your channel, I enjoyed this video so much
I love this review. 😆. This help me notice a lot of things I’ve missed when I originally watched this movie, multiple times as a kid. 1 of my favorite movies. This was great. Thank you. 😄
This video popped up as an ad on my feed, and I couldn't help but click, as Last Dragon was my introduction to martial arts movies. Your reaction video was a very fun watch. Im glad I got this as an ad.
Excellent reaction and review! Loved that you know your history of things in the movie.
I love how she's so honest about the villans music. It's bad it's not something I would play.
The video I didn't know I needed, but thank the UA-cam gods for recommending this!
I was 13 when this came out. Me and my friends saw this like 5 times in the movie theater in Brooklyn where I grew up.
I've never heard of this movie before, but I loved both of your commentary!
Barry Gordon was the producer of the film and just about every Motown song you've heard was overseen by him. He also produced the music.
This is my favorite movie of all time. When I am on my deathbed, it'll be my last request, to watch this movie. Nothing better than this.
This is a fun silly movie that is still entertaining. It was fun watching you guys react to it.
I absolutely love this movie, the sound track is phenomenal. There is actually a message if you listen to the to the opening theme
I really enjoyed how you were teaching her through out the movie to better understand
Omg! Dashed over cause I absolutely adore the Last Dragon! So cool and a fun watch. I love all the characters in it. Introduced me to Ernie Reyes Jr. so a next film recommendation could be Surf Ninjas.
Really wish they did the planned sequel where Leroy takes part in a competition in China where he goes through fighters who also use The Glow. Fancy writing it up myself as fanfic. However I do know there's a further animated series in the works and a sequel on the way that may focus on Sho'nuff.
Glad to see both of you are enjoying the first watch ^_^
The sequel sounds interesting! Looking forward to your version haha. Also thanks for the movie recommendation, we'll give it a watch some time!
Money can't buy knives.
Omg! I love this channel
15:44 I love how he says 他 and then she says 死了😱😂
Dope to see you all enjoy this movie. Trust it was far more impactful when it first came out lol
So cool to watch people watch my favorite movie for the first time. A dialogue from an eastern perspective was very interesting.😎
So excited you watched
Great reaction. I remember this when i was a kid and i own a copy of this movie to this day. It was the great blend of 80s corny comedy, action, and fantasy, and music of the times. It's not really serious. And who doesn't want to be a martial arts master and be able to glow. I would just walk around glowing. I'd be buying groceries just glowing as i pick up lettuce. At the mall? I'd be just glowing.
When Lee played Kato in The Green Hornet series, he was asked to slow down his punches and kicks, because his movements were so fast that the camera wasn't able to capture them on film.
Y'all are awesome!
One of my favorite movies ever ❤️
And the scene where he's dressed like a ninja with the obvious stunt double
I LOVE THIS REVIEW. AND LOVE THIS MOVIE!! THANK YOU GUYS FOR THIS. 🙏There is a animated shorts series in works that picks up where the film left off and Sho'nuff is up for revenge.
This movie was one of the best things to come out of the 80s. Bruce Leroy was the shvitz.
Great reaction 👍
Chinese with Jessie, your boyfriend called it right. Krush Groove is an astonishing movie.
😂She almost made me spit my coffee out @ 13:23
6:28 That's what I said the first time I saw Vanity, too. "Piàoliang..."
My gosh Lee is like a walking Encyclopedia.
Love you guys,I will share this with my Chinese friends to help them understand American pop culture. The girl is cute ( a sweetheart) and the guy is nerdy but cool.
Wtf my man Lee with the deep deep knowledge. 🤯
SHO-NUFFF... WHAT AN ICONIC ROLE. I LOVED THIS AS A KID. IM ALMOST 50 NOW.
"No Retreat No Surrender" Is a good Bruce Lee tribute movie also...
Little boy is Ernie Reyes Jr, his dad Ernie Reyes was the fight coordinator for this movie (they fight each other). Asian cultures all mixed up, like most Americans but they did try, missed a lot ( Lots of Japanese culture in Kung Fu movie). Classic 80's, comedy, action, mixed with music and styles back then.
I crack up everytime she calls the symbols on Sho'nuff clothes fried eggs LOL
Thank you for pointing out the fried egg motif. I always thought they looked like eggs, too. The Fried Egg Clan from the Harlem district of NYC.
Gritos de Tejas. You guys are amazing.
Classic 💪🏿
@3:00 Jessie in American Culture they call it Eskimo Brothers, I found that so funny. LOL. I'm so glad you guys watch this movie! Fun Fact Sho'Nuff kind of foreshadowed Leroy's ability to "catch bullets with his teeth" in the movie theater. This movie was one of my Favorites growing up and watched it so many times! Appreciate the Translations too!
Haha it's interesting that English and Cantonese both have a word for that, I've never heard of such thing in Mandarin though.
And yeah, I noticed Sho'Nuff said that when editing the video.
Glad you liked it!
@@ChinesewithJessie I did very much! Noticed your BF grew his beard out. You 2 have great commentary and chemistry! Looking forward to more videos from you guys, enjoy your weekend!
Sammo Hung was one of the stuntmen in Enter the Dragon, as well as Jackie Chan
American here, u usually can’t stand when reactors talk through the movie but i really enjoyed yours.
Cool story that beef between Sammo and Bruce. Sammo is such a talented martial artist and comical actor. His movies are hilarious. Precisely my favourite is "Enter the fat dragon" where he made a parody/tribute to Bruce and its really funny.
Lee is so knowledgeable! 👏
I agree with Lee, the bullet caught with his teeth is a little much! hahaha But the over-the-top elements were definitely standard for many similar movies of the time period. I'll echo what many others have said here in the comments, super impressed with Lee's prodigious knowledge of American pop culture - spanning many decades! Very impressive!
😀 great vid
I loved how you kept calling it the fried egg. I was dying. I think its supposed to be a flower.
I mean look at it, it's really a fried egg haha
Yeah the joke is the black guys dress asian and the Asian guys dress hood. Thanks for doing this love the reaction
I love how your apartment is coming together. It's beginning to look like a real "home".
When is Amber coming for a visit? It would be fun to see her make a "guest appearance" on your new "set". 🙂
We live in different cities now 😭 but definitely gonna make a video together again when she's here!
Oh she is so cute ❤
This is a Barry Gordy's movie. It is a cult classic in the black community. It was meant to be a light hearted fun movie. Thank you guys for watching it.
1. "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story"
2. "The Karate Kid 1,2,& 3.
3. "The Warriors of Virtue"
4. "Romeo Must Die"
5. "Unleashed"
6. " The Protector" starring Tony Jaa
7. " The Transporter", are all very entertaining movies that I recommend if you haven't experienced them yet.
Thank you for the recommendations! I haven't watched any of those, we'll check them out!
Great choices, especially Unleashed!
Oh, I forgot about one, "Chocolate " starring Jeeja Yanin. A definite must see!
Ohhh the Leeroy in Tekken 7 is based on this character.
Watched this once as a kid, and I loved it. I think your review was better than the movie.
This looks good
I know this is late, and I don't if anyone mentioned this or something like it, but when my dad showed me this as a kid, I thought this was supposed to be a black parody of a Bruce Lee movie, hence the name being "Bruce Lee"-roy.
As Black kid growing up in Louisiana, my dad and I have always enjoyed Chinese Kung Fu movies and this video made me watching this with him, so I'm going to like and watch more of your videos! You guys and Accented Cinema are very informational!
You guys make a very cute couple
I'm very impressed how the husband is so knowledgeable about other cultures. This was a great reaction from you both. 👍
I love the scene where they start break dancing in the middle of Enter The Dragon... Bruce Lee would be proud of his fans 🤣🤣
Catching bullets with his teeth 😳
Sho'nuff is such a cool villian.
"Fried egg" 🤣🤣😭
Dude knows his stuff and and little guy Ernie Reyes Jr was at the time the youngest black in the world nice scissor kick and also was a ninja turtle
Like the beard, Lee!
You guys should watch “the Crow”
great channel
Cool
The Last Dragon is marketed towards children (preteens and teens). It is why children were in the film and the villains barely hit people.
That makes sense! Thanks!
@@ChinesewithJessie btw Eddie Acadane’s (co-villains) tank held a school of piranha fish
More movie reactions 😊
This movie is good because the filmmakers leaned into the cheese. The acting is bad, the plot is pedestrian, the costuming is...off, but the film is self aware, so it doubles down on the ridiculousness to make a really fun movie.
I wonder if the mix-up between Chinese and Japanese culture was deliberate. It could be that the filmmakers knew the difference, but they wanted to show how a receiving culture understands the borrowed culture and gives insight into what the receiving thinks is most important or interesting. My favorite case of cultural exchange with China is the opening of the American-style "Chinese" food restaurant in Shanghai a few years ago. It was started by a couple of Americans working or studying (I can't remember which) and found that they missed the "Chinese food" that they had back home, so they decided to open a restaurant to serve authentic American Chinese food in China. It was called The Fortune Cookie. I wonder if it is still around.
Vanity’s worst movie (her best was Action Jackson). Btw Andre 3000 dressed like sho’nuff with the football pads 🤣
有很多人也"就说垃圾话。。。" 非常好的句子。
You know I have heard about a youtuber named daetrix is making a show called the rise of the last dragon animated series based on the last dragon movie 🎬
In places like Harlem in the 70s and early 80s.. Chinese martial arts movies, specifically Bruce Lee.. were a HUGE deal to black audiences. So popular youd see young black guys either dressing like Bruce or dressing in chinese style clothes. At the time, Hollywood movies weren't being made for or representing black audiences.. they were mostly made with white actors.. but Chinese kung fu presented these characters that weren't white but they were heroic and strong and the movies were just cool.. so that generation really loved them.. that's why the rap group Wu Tang Clan was all about kung fu movies. In the 70s, theaters that shows kung fu movies in the US, the audiences would go INSANE... not quite like this movie, but more like going to a wrestling match... people really got into it and loved them. This movie is like a love letter to that era
Thanks for the info Dan, Lee is a huge fan of Wu Tang Clan!
And then the L.A. riots happened and we discovered what you guys really think of us. 😛
@@hanng1242 What about the Korean store owner killing Latasha Harlins. Shot her in the back as she was leaving the store. Which was one of the contributors of the LA Riots. But you failed to mention that. How appropriate. Now we know how you think of us.
@beaujac311 And what happened to that store owner? She was prosecuted and convicted, and the Koreans in LA didn't riot over it. They didn't protest outside the courthouse trying to intimidate jurors. They didn't claim that the store owner was being treated unfairly. They acted like normal citizens rather than entitled prices with chips on their shoulders, supporting criminals simply because of shared race. Meanwhile, even though Harlin's family received justice through the criminal justice system, the rioters still used it as an excuse for their criminal behavior.
@@hanng1242 You brought this up with your nasty ignorant comment. Yes, what did happen to the store owner? She was convicted of manslaughter which usually carries a 16 year sentence in prison but the judge commuted it to probation and a $500 fine. You and I both know that was wrong, but you will not admit this because you are a racist. So I will not be replying to anymore of your comments.
0:37 Jessie: "Wow look at the muscles". Li: "The muscles are almost as good as mine".
Then comes Jessie's glance to her left and her "I don't THINK so" smirk.
You see guys... This is why you should NEVER watch movies with good-looking guys in it with your girlfriend... You are ALWAYS going to be shot down.
Of course, this is not allowed in reverse (very much a double standard) ... Guys are supposed to suck it up and take these little insults, not saying a word. But can you imagine the hell Li would have had to pay if he had raved on with "Wow... look at those beasts" or "Wow look at that tight little ass" if it had been a female "beauty" on screen instead.
The moral of the story: Girlfriends get to say whatever they want. Boyfriends may not. It's a fact of life. 😅🤣😂
😂😂
When Bruce Lee first moved to the USA he was famous for his hands and arms as he studied Wing Chun. His kicks he developed later when he worked with some Karate people. And you MUST teach your boyfriend Hopscotch! 🤣🤣
Fortunate man.
THIS should be good 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
If you're a DBZ fan you know where Akira Toriyama's idea for super Saiyan come from just look at super Saiyan Goku vs Frieza fight
You should watch "The Karate Kid (2010)" and you should also watch "Dragon: the Bruce Lee Story"
Thank you for the recommendations, I'll check them out!
Fun fact: No evidence of a ghostly samurai has yet been discovered. Spooky.
I believe they just liked both Chinese and Japanese culture. So, they used them both.🙂
Damn you know the China vs Japan beef is still real when she keeps calling it a fried egg though 🤣
