  • Update: After EXTENSIVE testing of all these routers: Asus AC87U, Netgear R7000, Netgear R8000, Apple Airport Extreme, and the Linksys WRT1900AC routers, EVERY router had issues with 20 wireless clients and 15 wired clients (two being media servers).
    RESULT: At the end of the day, the ONLY router that did not fail, slow, or need to be rebooted daily was the Asus AC87U. Note that it's only stable when using the latest firmware, which doesn't show up under auto-update yet, and must be downloaded directly from Asus's support website. With this firmware, though, it is the most stable router of all of them by far, and has not even hiccuped after 6 straight days of use with no reboots. Definitely buy the AC87U.... it's the best consumer on the market.
    After purchasing the Asus RT-AC87R, I felt it necessary to compare it to the R8000 since nobody can legitimately decide between the two. So, here is the setup and comparison between the R8000 and the AC2400. Honestly, I think I'll return the R8000. It's great, but it's just an extra radio and I found speed and reception both to be greater with the Asus, surprisingly. We will have to wait and see how the Asus performs after the first firmware update, since right now it occasionally drops wifi, which is to be expected from a brand new router like this.

      +Vince Cantrell Was the Airport Extreme as nearly as stable as AC87U? I've also heard that with new firmware WRT1900AC drops wifi and reboots every few hours, forums are flooded with that, and Linksys is basically ignoring it and hasn't pushed any update for a long time to fix it.

      You probably know this by now,but more the likely you needed to update your modem back then. The routers in the video are top of the line back then an still top 5 on the market 7yrs later.

    Good review as always :D I read some sources from other sites that they've reviewed this router and they experience lost connection and no internet via WiFi. Will you review the Ultimate Router the ASUS RT-AC3200?

    @Luke- The 5GHz is an entirely different wireless spectrum range. It is generally better and faster as not nearly as many devices use the 5GHz range, but older devices still can't connect to it. As far as the radios, there are two 5GHz radios and the device (if you tell it to) will automatically give both radios the same SSID and then will automatically switch connected devices between the for load balancing and optimized speed. It's pretty cool.

    The Netgear X6/R8000 rocks. 18 wireless + 2 wired devices work flawlessly. That's 6x2.4GHz + 7x5.0GHz-1 + 6x5.0GHz-2 + 1xWiredMediaServer + 1xWiredLaserjetPrinter. Nighthawk was purchased 11/4/2014 and firmware upgraded immediately.

    just bought an R 7900 from Costco, was consistently experiencing drops every 15 minutes with the Netgear n450 that was provided by Cox when I set up service in my apartment complex. had massive Wi-Fi interference. combined my Nighthawk x6 83000 with a motorola 600 series modem sb 8163 I believe. turned netflix on on my blu-ray player, stream Netflix from my smartphone through my chromecast, then played a UA-cam video on my phone, played a UA-cam video on my tablet, then opened both laptops in the house, open four windows on each laptop and had four separate youtube videos streaming, then performed a speed test at speedtest.net although the speed drop down to 30 megabits per second from 50 not one video lost its HD signal, no drop in Internet service whatsoever. this thing is amazing. Just so those of you who are out there experiencing problems understand what you're getting. the 2.4 gigahertz band can only go from channel 1 to 11, 1,6, 11 are the best channels to set your router to Mines is on 11 because it was the least congested channel. the other two 5 gigahertz bands are set two channels that cannot be reached by 2.4 gigahertz networks, which is where most everyone else is with their Wi-Fi router. my 5 gigahertz networks are on Channel 153. I connected the smartphones and tablets to the five gigahertz band and the laptop and Blu ray player to the 2.4 gigahertz band. and it has been absolutely flawless. $400 might seem like a lot of money initially, but as my dad told me many many many years ago you only pay for it once you have to live with it everyday of your life.

    You should try the Merlin firmware for your ASUS. I use it on my N66U and it just makes the router so much better. In case you don't know, Merlin firmware is stock ASUS firmware with bug fixes and improvements. Congrats on your beautiful routers

    i would have went with something more powerful, probably the asus 88u.... you would have had more luck with that since its built to handle many more devices than these routers
    what did you end up keeping and are using now?

    Which router (Netgear R8000 or ASUS AC87R/AC87U) would be best for 10 wireless clients? I don't have any 802.11ac devices, yet but will once I upgrade my phone in a month. Did you test USB 3.0 transfer speeds through the network? If so, any drop in wireless performance during transfer? How is the wireless performance on each router on from one floor to the next?

    What I would like to see in a review as I know some people would like to have a setup like when they have a 2 or 3 story house. WIFI AC router on first or second floor. Then 3rd floor will use a AC wifi router to use it as a wifi bridge so that upstairs will be wired since upstairs can sometimes be a bit sketchy.

    I'm looking at these 2 wireless but i really don't need 2 5.0 Ghz bands... but I'm going with whatever has the most range. its a big house with multiple floors and its all brick and concrete. whats your suggestion? the Nighthawk or the Asus RT-AC87?

    Router manufactures, can you please add Micro SD slot to ALL your upcoming routers as the Micro SD storage is in upwards of 1 Terabyte and growing. It is a lot more convenient to store data on tiny Micro SD card than a huge hard drive.

    Im upload is less than 1 and download like 14, how would a router like this effect that??

    • @Magumboo1
      @Magumboo1 10 років тому

      wont effect it much at all its more along the provider side that maybe limiting your connection to those test speeds. but also as i read in other comments that something like this it made for more wifi connection at a higher speed. but i do wish Australia will have that speed here so jelly my max download is like 15mbs an 800kbs upload. its really sad. but that is ADSL 2+.
