I once watched a restoration video where they claimed to have found a 30 year old computer which was covered in mud at the side of the road. The motherboard inside the computer was based on Intel’s socket 775 which was launched in 2004, so not even 20 years old at this point. That was the first red flag, the biggest mistake was when the took apart the hard disk drive and cleaned the disk platter with a wire brush which would destroy it. Then they put it all back together, booted up the computer which was running windows 10, which has zero chance of working on a 30 year old computer.
So what I'm getting here is that is the improper way to deep clean your hard drive. That explains a lot. Noted.

Same with animal ones, i saw short of a rescue kitten (fell into a drum of water) saved from imminent drowning, comment section overwhelmingly calling it staged. Actual full video has the cctv of the kitten falling into the drum, the security guard saw it in real time and saved it, 100% not staged.
I love the guy who restores antique tools and toys. He’s legit. But the only one I know of.
The rug cleaning ones are the ones that annoy me. They originally were legit rug cleaning companies doing ASMR-like videos of their day to day normal rug cleaning processes. These days the rug cleaning videos start with a rug that has 3" of thick mud on it as if anyone would ever get a rug that dirty, or bother paying to have it cleaned after doing so, and even more improbable is that EVERY rug they get is equally caked in mud.
I don’t generally watch the rug cleaning videos, but the only one I have seen specifically said that the rug they were cleaning that time (which was a cat rug for a child’s bedroom, and just a filthy brown all over) was in a property that had flooded. I agree it’s a bit sus to have that many really filthy rugs though.
I came to this video just for this comment. My husband's rug cleaning video conspiracy runs so deep every time I turn on one of those videos.

I think it would actually be fun to make a satirical UA-cam Restoration Channel that is hilariously and blatantly fake. It would all be played deadpan serious, but seeded with very obvious indicators of fake restoration, such as sanding away at something while the sandwich on a plate in the background becomes un-eaten with each jump cut, or shoving aside the packaging from the new item to plot down the muddy rusted thing to be restored, or having reverse video where water drips and filings are moving against gravity. Turn into an entertaining game of Where's Waldo for all of the humorous and obvious indicators in the background.
Some of "I did a thing" 's videos are like this, where he'll be building something in a blatantly incorrect manner.

You put a hole in a game boy case and repair it with ramen that you forget to crush, then paint it green, but every shot after that, it's red and clearly not the same.
You can even put text at the bottom saying it's green because that's the colour you painted it, and that's the colour you remember, but it's very obviously red.

From actually restoring vintage electronics (mostly computers) as a hobby, it's actually fine to clean circuit boards with soap and water and with some very baked on dust and crud, is almost necessary to get them clean. However, the secret is make sure there is no charge stored in the board first, clean them with distilled water/isopropyl alcohol afterwards, and let them dry completely before reinstallation.
Yes, it's perfectly fine to do as long as you clean thoroughly afterwards with lots of distilled water followed IPA, and don't power it on before it's dry, just like you said. I've done this for years as well. Don't do it before trying to get your phone repaired under warranty though. 🤣
Computers can actually run even if the moisture is pretty high, people overclock with liquid nitrogen. The board gets covered in ice but even when there's some condensation buildup it keeps working (up to a point). Can you kill it by doing this? Of course, so you better know what you're doing lol.
Repair shops also use... damn my brain is malfunctioning. Can't remember the word for it lol. A powered machine that you submerge the item in water with some additives and put power into it. Why can't I remember it, I used to use it all the time. 😂

I remember seeing a very old video of a guy taking his beige PC tower apart, putting all the components in the dishwasher to wash all the smoker's gunk and dust off, and letting it dry for days. Blew my mind. Still wouldn't try it.
@@Henchman_Holding_Wrench Works quite well as the soap you use for dishwashers also has anti-oxidation chemicals in it. Granted I still only use it on PCBs I could replace or otherwise wouldn't have issues being killed.
@@Henchman_Holding_Wrench Been there, done that. The heat and jets work wonders on getting pcb's clean. Although I usually don't put dishwasher pods in. I usually will just let it rinse with hot water.

I just got to say, I absolutely loved the barnacle PSA at the end. Too often when these fake animal rescue trends are discussed the videos covering them don't mention that the issue being faked wouldn't necessarily be appropriately dealt with with the action performed even if it wasn't faked.
I watched a few of the 'barnacle removed' videos to find some footage and found myself getting sadgry, so I decided to include the info on the off-chance there are seafarers who watch this channel.

One of my all time favorite fakes was the guy on the beach with a metal detector that found a gold chain less than an inch under the sand perfectly laid out in a straight line.
Once i learned that those turtle videos were faked so often I've stopped watching any of them. It's a shame because I'd love to support the genuine ones but i can't tell the difference. There are too many videos that deliberately abuse animals and then 'rescue' them, abandoned dogs, cats, rabbits, turtles... what is wrong with people!
As much as love animals I can no longer support any animal rescue channels. So many of them cause the harm in the first place and UA-cam supports the abuse!
I ran across a video and immediately could tell it was sus, the poor turtles with their body language were clearly not having a good time but also obviously super weak.... actual wild turtles caught flip the freak out, most animals will if they can, even when hurt, when you catch them, but the tame way these critters try to get away makes it clear which ones have been handled a lot and which ones are actually wild. Also true rescues likely will have nonprofit connections, of which you can look up which are legit or not. Hope this helps clear things up for anyone who was curious.

Just wondering if you have seen "Sitting with Dogs", Rocky makes videos where he goes to his local shelter & spends time just sitting with abandoned/abused dogs that are scared to show them that not all humans are a Horrific 💩 but have compassion & want to help them find a loving home.
There’s almost no real barnacle removal videos involving turtles.
Sea turtles can fight the load of barnacles with their immune system. If there’s too many, their immune system attacks the barnacles and keeps them under control.
If there’s do many barnacles and the sea turtles can’t move well and it’s weighing him down, that means his immune system is weak and he’s very sick.
Taking the barnacles off and putting him back in the water would not only be excruciating for him, but would leave cuts that are open to infection _and_ wouldn’t treat the underlying illness that allowed the barnacles to build up.
So if an infection didn’t finish him, the barnacles would just build up again.
The people that save turtles like this treat the underlying illness before treating the barnacles. Because if you can get him well again, his own body can fight off most of the barnacles.
Basically, a heavy load of barnacles are a symptom of an illness, not something that needs to be treated itself.

Back when I was in middle school, I found a Monty Python DVD in the middle of a swap with mud caking the entire sleeve, inside and out. I stuck the two DVDs in my bathroom sink full of water overnight, rinsed them off in the morning, and watched them later that night.
This is probably my proudest "restoration" I've ever done, myself... but mostly, I was just amazed that the discs didn't have any scratches.
Wondering how they got there. Some wife was probably tired of her man watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail over and over
@@2degucitas I have to wonder how it got out there, too, as where it was found was no easy feat to get to. The closest access to the part of the swamp we found it in still took a good fifteen minute trudge through unkempt woods that became muddier and muddier as you went on, and was fenced in with the only easy access from an opening in the fence requiring you to balance on a thin strip of concrete that was akin to balancing on a curb in a parking lot- and that's if the whole place wasn't simply flooded. If you didn't keep your footing, there was a good chance you'd end up waist-deep in mud, even in summer.
As for the contents, it wasn't one of the movies; it was a collection of skits. I'm pretty sure that the Deadliest Joke in the World and the spam restaurant were amongst the skits on the two DVDs.

This is why I like restoration videos of obscure antique devices that I usually have never heard of or seen before. Because it's probably not faked, and I get to learn about something right down to the components.

Yea, I was actually shocked when I saw Adrian do it the first time, but give it a bit of thought, and, well... he gets away with it, so I guess it's fine, as long as you wait a looong time or use a fair amount of heat to reliably remove the water from all small cavities.
I'd still stay away from doing it unless it's a filthy mess, as I have a feeling this process has the potential to start corrosion in a number of hidden spots, so the long term effects could be rather problematic for collectors.
I know, who cares. Don't do it to your Apple I board though.
Soap isn't exactly kosher when it comes to most electronics/electronic parts, but many things can _technically_ survive it, if done as you said. I'd never advice it unless the item/part is otherwise a throwaway, though. Kinda like "don't jump out of a plane unless it's about to crash".
I use water all the time - just Boomer Mountain Spring water straight from my garden hose

I've certainly used alcohol to clean electronic parts that didn't have finishes/plastic that would be damaged by alcohol, and that would be preferable for most applications over soap and water, I would think (well, especially soap, and the problem with water is of course it takes a lot longer to dry than alcohol). But regularly blowing off stuff with compressed air should be the preferred method for preventing the need for a deep clean in the first place because, frankly, most people - myself included most of the time - have no idea what they're doing with that type of deep cleaning job and would be better off trying to avoid ever needing to attempt it in the first place.

I like restoration channels which feature skilled professionals who mostly fix or restore items sent in by paying customers and then document some of them on youtube on the side. This is the best source of truly authentic restoration work.

Cleaning circuits with soap and water is a legit technique! Just make sure it's very dry before you turn it back on.
You can legitimately wash a keyboard in a dishwasher (no heated dry) so long as you let it air dry properly for a few days , and put it in front of a fan for good measure. Just use straight water without detergent.
Try it with an old keyboard.
@@KensCounselingCouch I'd rather not, foam-and-foil types definitely a bad idea, but old ones with discrete switches likely survive it (but then those are too valuable to mess around with).
Newer foil contact types are notoriously good at holding liquid between the layers, like, forever. It gets sealed in there and not going anywhere. I spilled a lot of drinks in a lot of these, you better forget it drying out no matter how much air you blow from the outside. Take it apart, clean it, with a bit of luck, it will work again.
They wash them in factories, but those are brand new parts with no defects, perfect protective film and coating where protection is needed. On a device with wear, water can hypothetically introduce small seeds of corrosion everywhere, which in turn holds moisture rather efficiently, which will help further corrosion, in some time that could become a serious issue all over the board. It will clearly work right after you dried it properly, but I have a feeling it will age way faster. I'm not a big fan of doing this.
@@matwyder4187 That's why we use 99% isopropyl alcohol afterwards, then bring it up to near 100C. It displaces the water in places like between the chips and the board, actually absorbs some of the water, and dries quickly. Forgetting to do either of those can be memorable...

Long time fan and sea turtle biologist here, just wanna say I love the PSA at the end. It’s pretty well dead on. Barnacles are irritating to turtles but not a huge threat in and of themselves. And when there are lots of them, it’s almost always a symptom of an unrelated health issue. Great work guys!
i would like to mention Backyardbalistics, who is a Itallian youtuber (english language) that kinda started this anti-fake restoration video crusade and to my knowlage came up with the weak fake/strongfake termenology.

Odd Tinkering is a great restoration channel that shows all his steps and explains via text on screen what is happening and why he's doing it. It's otherwise just the sounds of him cleaning and fixing stuff.
Awesome restorations is another channel like that. Quite relaxing and satisfying to watch

Good restoration channels that aren't faked:
The best: Hand Tool Rescue
Absolutely well done videos that are generally detailed and often funny with often, no voice over (unless you want it).
Primarily focusing on tools from the late 1800's to early 1900's, but often venturing up into the 1960's
Next best: Chip Channel Restoration
Amazing old toy restorations that are often unrivaled in quality. His videos tend to be incredibly long endeavors, like, often 45 minutes to an hour. Often molds his own tires and parts. Sometimes they don't work out, but he shows the whole process. Again, very long videos, I often watch them in 2x.
There are many other good ones:
Odd tinkering: old tools and often newer electronics (I initially discounted this as a faker channel due to this, but it's not, he goes through the proper steps including retro brighting yellowed plastics, etc.) Often random tools and such. One of the best parts of this channel is he has a laser rust remover, so that's fun
Rescue / Restore: does a whole lot of random restorations of mostly older vintage steel/ tin toys and such. He's been absent for about a year.
TysyTube: Often great restorations, uses mostly exaggerated thumbnails, that make you think he's faking it. His stuff is all over the place
There are a few others that I'm forgetting, but those ones are the best, imo.
Ones that are absolutely faked, or at the very least, they very specifically break them even more than they were

Restoration: It's pretty much all model cars. It does not deserve the name it has.
MrRescue: I'm somewhat on the fence on this one. It's obvious that some of the videos are real, but definitely not all of them.

To be fair, the superglue thing is true. I repair and build guitars for a living, we use super glue and baking soda to fill and recut individual nut sluts when replacement isn't necessary. It's also used to drop fill clearcoats, mix it with wood dust to fill a crack/wood chipout. It can wetsand and buff to a high gloss when needed.
Definitely takes practice, I wouldn't recommend just jumping into it- But it is legit!

We didn't fix a lot of guitars, we mainly did setups. I do remember filling some tiny cracks with gel nail polish and UV hardening it. I could match the color and gloss coat. I honestly don't know how it holds up, but I didn't want to use wood filler or putty on an already finished guitar with tiny cracks or chips. Using baking soda and super glue on a nut slot would have been a useful thing to know, though.
I was scrolling through here to see if anyone else mentioned that, before posting about it myself, lol. It's such a great trick for makers of all kinds!
Most of the "super glue" types of CA glue can make great filler, if you don't need too large of an area filled. Small cracks, chips, holes, etc. are quite easy, especially if you have small bits of the object's material to use with it. Baking soda makes an amazing all-purpose filler, and it causes a chemical reaction with CA glues that will cause it to be fully set and hardened in just moments. Not that CA glue takes long to set anyway, of course; but 2-3 seconds is still a lot faster than 30, and that can matter. The resulting substance is stronger than many common plastics, too.
It's also great for plastic repair, certainly not a perfect solution but generally good enough to repair broken functional parts in 70's and 80's computers.
The baking soda and CA glue is also used by miniature painters and model railroad hobbyists. I'm a miniature painter (think D&D or tabletop war games), and that trick works well for filling gaps or small defects in a pinch.
I've been using the old bicarb trick for years. It's stronger than people think. I had a car stereo fall to bits. The back actually fell off the facia. Two hours getting it out and 10 minutes of messing about with soda/glue and it was back together and still working two years after, when I sold the car.
P.S.. Only use superglue to fill poly clearcoats on guitars.

The superglue mixed with usually baby powder or baking soda is actually a thing though 😅 But not to the extremes you’d see in fake restoration videos. If I remember correctly, the powder extracts the moisture out of the glue really quickly causing it to cure fast and leave some mass you can then sand down or shape.. but it only works with very small parts, not to fill a big hole or anything..
My favorite fake was the one planted in your thumbnail. Was already obvious just them finding the thing, but what really took it to next level is the guy dunked the board into chemicaled up water but didn't bother making sure the speakers were taken off the board. Later and later he puts it all back together and it's just fully functional and the speaker is absolutely pure and dynamic.
New channel idea.... "Reaction Blaze" .... Simon sips Champagne whilst watching underpaid writers sobbing into their 2012, non Pro, Mac book keyboards.
I'm ok with the "weak fake" videos, it's still actual restoration and they are just nice to watch.
Yeah, those are fairly harmless. But the "strong fake" videos are legitimately preying on those who lack critical thinking skills. EDIT: people who make those turtle videos can also go straight to hell

Got into a lot of the Tonka and Matchbox type restoration videos. Obviously legit restos as they're dealing with long out of production hard to find duplicates in mint condition or legitimately age yellowed plastic or explain special tools they've actually made to replicate certain manufacturing techniques for reassembly.
Unfortunately that left the algorithm showing me guys that get those cheap truck stop/ gift shop/ souvenir shop die cast vehicles where they beat the shyte out of one,bury it somewhere and then " find " it and " restore " the duplicate.
I'm so glad to see y'all call these out. And I'm happy to watch Simon be Simon calling these out.

An even darker side of this is with the popularity legit channels get their content stollen all the time to the point the now ubiquitous name/logo everywhere technique is used often on benches, mats, containers, tools, etc where they can’t be cropped or blurred out.
You absolutely can clean circuit boards with water and soap. Heck, we used to put boards in the lab dishwasher to clean them. Certain components can't tolerate normal soap though. The important part is to make sure everything is discharged beforehand and properly dry before turning it back on afterwards. To avoid any mineral deposits and corrosion Isopropanol or ethanol can be used to remove the water. Afterwards it can be dried in an oven, a dessicator, or by just waiting.
The thing is that it's rarely necessary to go this length. In my case it was control, inverter, and servo boards from old cnc equipment. Equipment that spent 20-40 years being run constantly in an oil dust and smoke filled environment.

I'm so glad I accidentally came across this channel. After binge watching it for quite some time, I've definitely learned some stuff, but mainly been entertained. Thank you Simon, and team (the ENTIRE team).
I've always wondered about people who find Simon and Co, and what they thought of this. Those of us who have been with Simon since before BB kinda thought outsiders wouldn't understand, but the channel grows still! It's really great to see!
The original Primitive Technology dude is awesome. Make sure you turn on Subtitles for his 'narration' of what he is building.
He's gone from being able to make simple huts and clay pottery to building structures with fired bricks and built several ovens and small forges and has recently entered the Iron Age by being able to harvest small prills from bacterial mats in his creek.

the only Restoration channel i follow is "Hand Tool Rescue" and that's only because he actually restores old equipment that hasn't been tampered with to look old and rusty like most other channels do.

I really appreciate you bringing up the turtle videos. It's such a gross thing for people to do. There's also other videos where people "help" animals who are supposedly stuck or hurt, and it turns out at least some were filmed after the people put the animals in that position themselves to then film the "save." It's to the point you can't trust any of those videos, there's too many harmful ones.
On a lighter note - I appreciate Lorelei's editing so much! Don't tell the others, but she's my favorite.

"Pitting" is generally a good indicator for a real restoration video of something metal. That's when rust has actually eaten away at the metal underneath and left a rough surface underneath. It's incredibly difficult to fake. Some of the channels that do restorations are real but there is truly a huge number that are just fake. Usually if they're showing themselves "finding" something it's fake as well, most of the real ones have people send them old items to restore from friends or viewers. It's a real bummer that there are so many fakes because the people who are doing it for real are actually really skilled and talented people with a passion for bringing life back to forgotten objects and they deserve to be recognized.

Soap and water are actually fine to use on a circuit board. The thing is you should use some type water displacer and also let it set for several days. Lemon juice with a soft brush works for too clean pcb and rinsed off placed in a hot (but not too hot oven) that's been turned off for a few hours. Then let it sit overnight works really well
The finished PCBs go through a dishwasher before being put into their housing. It’s how the flux from soldering during assembly is removed.

Backyard Ballistics is the best firearms restoration channel. He did a video calling out all the other fake channels and giving some good information about spotting them.
Simon questioning if people's heart rate increases is funny. He forgot when he played Papers Please for his channel. "HURRY SHOW ME YOUR PAPERS I HAVE TO MAKE MONEY TO FEED MY FAMILY COMRADE"
It’s not just those awful turtle videos. Some people show themselves finding a dog or cat that is sick and/or injured on the side of a road, in a cage, in a garbage heap, trapped in a pipe or well, etc.
It’ll show them doing something normal (making one wonder why they were filming themselves to begin with), when suddenly they maybe hear something or they’re just looking through some trash and find it, or the scared animal comes to them.
They often use puppies or kittens, and sometimes whole litters of them.
Then they’ll heroically rescue the animal from its predicament and either pass it off to an animal shelter or show a couple quick clips of them feeding it and assurances that they are going to nurse the dog/cat back to health.
But a lot of times these people find stray animals on the street and put them in these dangerous places themselves. Some leave them in cages with no water for days so that the dog is dehydrated when they “rescue” it.
And some physically harm the animal, often by breaking a leg so they can’t run far before they’re “discovered”.
The telltales of these kinds of videos are if most of their videos are animal rescue videos, but they are not part of an animal rescue group or shelter.
Also if many of the animals they “rescue” are injured but they always look like very recent injuries.
And if they seem to be doing something ordinary while filming themselves, then suddenly find an injured animal can be a sign of a fake. Similarly if they’re driving and filming themselves (or start filming just after driving) and claim to have seen an animal on the side of the road that is trapped, but once they find it, there’s clearly no way they could have seen it from the road.
Basically, just use common sense and logic and if something seems off, it probably is.
There's one "fake" restoration channel I watch. The guy meticulously details scale toy cars to look rusted out junkers, then the whole video he "restores" them to a level of detail that far exceeds even the original toy. It's pretty cool. He hasn't shown how he ages/wrecks the cars, but the restoration and painting process always is top notch.
Speed runs are a serious thing. If you actually like the game they're running, they can be amazing. Love me some Link to the Past and Super Metroid runs.

I am an Electronics Engineer. 30 years experience. I also restore vintage electronics.
You absolutely do clean old circuit boards with soap and water. A good brush scrub. Then a rinse in distilled water, a bath in Isopropanol, and compressed air dry or oven dry.
Long story short, used to work in a bakery where everybody was angry all the time. It was to the point that I described my mental state in there as "bucking", like a horse. Which then led to the all too predictable Spoonerism "bucking fakery". Which then became BUCK FAKE. So when I made video tapes of my rants about the place, I would always label them BUCK FAKE. Seeing the words "weak fake" just reminded me of that.
The movie/TV show reaction channels, in spite of being a guilty pleasure of mine, are also kinda riding the line. Some of them even get boxes of swag from somewhere, the movie studios I guess? And they'll open them on screen like oh look how special we are! I guess that's what you get for using someone else's content, you just get more free shit. FROM THEM! Who knew it was that easy?
As annoying as fake restoration videos are, I do enjoy when competent people debunk and laugh at them.

Odd tinkering seems like an honest restoration channel
21:20 Baking soda + Cyanoacrylate ("super glue") does make an effective filler. Two downsides to using it: 1) It generates a *lot* of heat 2) It tends to be quite rough/bumpy when applied and requires a fair bit of sanding once solidified.
This reminds me of the cosmetic restoration channels that do some really weird things to makeup that would never happen in the real world just to “restore” them, or they just destroy new makeup and put it back in another container.
Are we sure that Kevin is a real person, and not just a hallucination of Simon's from sitting in the same room by himself, talking to a camera, for years now?

I was going to write a comment about fake animal rescue videos, but I'm glad Kevin beat me to it. I'll just add that it's not just turtle "rescue" videos. There are also people starving and torturing cats and other animals so they can make a video about their "rescue". They also use the trick of filming the "after" part first.

Another sign that the video is genuine is if the person performing the restoration makes mistakes, includes those mistakes, and explains them. Many of the channels in the vintage 8-Bit Computing genre do exactly this as they want feedback from fellow techs.
Oh, and we clean PCBs in the dishwasher all the time. You have to prep the PCB by removing cables, batteries, and socketed ICs, but in the end its plastic with metal bits, the same as your dishes and cutlery (well, not _exactly_ the same, but close enough). I've done it several times with no issue - the reassembled machines work great, and not a spot of rust on the plastic case. ;)

Thank you Simon and co. for reminding me about a forgotten Facebook and UA-camr restoration page/channel I used to watch, and have since this video re-found again. TysyTube Restoration I found probably a year or two ago, lost the Facebook page, then re-found it when looking up on Facebook under videos for restoration today.

Finally, even Simon acknowledged that the intros take way too damn long! Like I get that these videos are more free form and structured more like a podcast but sometimes the intro drags on so long I forget what the topic of the video even is.
I just restored an oak screen door for our 199 year old local court house. I charged $350 basically for the parts. After 5 coats of spar varnish , sanding, and buffing I have over $1000 in labour. Restoring costs more than new but I would never be able to buy a new door like the old one.
The only good resto channels I like focus on repairing antique and vintage toys. There's just something refreshing about watching an old tin toy being brought back to it's prime with elbow grease, human know-how, tools, and chemicals like Retro-bright and Rustoleum paint.
I love Kevin's episodes lol. Yes Simon of course as well but Kevin is my fav writer.

21:19 First, credit to the editor for such a work of art, but also, if you take a guitar with a cracked/chipped nut to a music shop for repair, there's a good chance it will be filled with baking soda and superglue. A Lutheir on the other hand will replace the nut, but if you had to keep it then this is a workable repair.
If you want an example of a genuinely great real restoration channel, I suggest odd tinkering. Not only are the restorations real, but they walk you through the process step-by-step and even have dedicated videos for helpful techniques.

Odd Tinkering is definitely legit. You can just tell from watching. All of the stuff he gets is realistically messy/worn out, and he goes through step by step how to fix and clean them.
That music during the turtle PSA was so soothing.
For 6 years I assembled circuit boards for commercial washers. The last step was to wash the boards in mild soapy water to remove flux then rinse in distilled water and rack to dry.
Soap and water is perfectly fine to use to clean circuit boards as long as they're properly dried before being turned on again and no battery is present.
I'm an engineer and we use a repurpoused dishwasher with a deionized water supply to clean PCBs fresh out the oven.
As a metal fabricator, I have to comment. In metal industry we have a chemical that actually turns rust into primer. It will clean a good amount of the rust away with a brush stroke and the rest turns black that holds paint better than raw steel. Acid also cleans rust off with a brush stroke. Acid is also used to accelerate rust faster than vinegar or hydrogen peroxide
One thing about rust is that it causes pitting in the metal. If they clean off the "rust" and the metal is perfectly smooth, it wasn't rust.
