Judas Priest was my first concert. 15 years old, I seen them about 30 miles outside of Chicago at Poplar Creek Music Theater, July 1986 for the Fuel For Life(Turbo album) tour. Krokus opened up. Blew my mind.
New subscriber, mate. I'm a 50 something Aussie who grew up idolising this band. You've picked one of their alltime classics. 1976 is a long way back, and kudos to you for giving it a crack. This is my favorite JP album. It really shows Mr. Halfords' vocal talent, as well as the rest of the band. "Dreamer/Deceiver" is mind-blowing for vocals. Lyrics were great. "Epitaph" reminds us when we see an old, frail man sitting on a bench that "he is our tomorrow just as much as we are his yesterday". Just listen to the whole thing even if you don't review it.
I love pretty much all eras of Judas Priest, but one thing that makes those '70s albums so special is the inclusion of more progressive pieces like "Dreamer Deciever", "Epitaph", "Here Comes The Tears" or "Beyond The Realms Of Death". It's true however that they were probably out of context with the more straightfoward (but still great) heavy metal sound of the '80s. But that's one of the reason why i don't understand the hate towards an excellent (and super underrated) album like "Nostradamus", were they return to those sonorities in many songs and interludes.
@@danbal4185 Only thing that bothers me as JP went along in their career is the equipment switch to digital. This album on vinyl is some of the best use of analog equipment a person could find. So much of what made them isn't possible for digital to recreate and is altered from it's original format. It's the main reason the live albums sound so different today. It's recorded digitally. This album was never as good as the vinyl, you can hear the distinct difference in the songs. Same as listening to Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon. The CD can't duplicate the original recording in analog. I don't know this engineer, but I do from Floyd. Alan Parsons, his recording methods are legendary though out his career. Doesn't have as much impact as a good analog recording anymore. It was an experience with albums like this. It isn't possible to digitally reproduce what a singer like this can really do with his voice. They have made many digital devices over the years, such as Auto-Tune to compensate. It's still not everything you'll get with analog recordings. Just closer today than it ever has been digitally. Listen to this on Vinyl or a good tape reel to reel would be best. Trust me, it's a totally different album than this digital here.

You never talk about how these songs make you feel. You compartmentalize each instrument, especially the storyline, but you don't seem to hear it as a whole. You're missing out on the powerful emotions these songs evoke. The slow part in this song is so beautiful it makes me cry. Do any songs make you cry? Do they make you happy, sad, energized? Some songs, like this one, are so powerful that they take your energy and leave you exhausted...or wanting a cigarette. I think your automatic head-bobbing to the beat takes away from your ability to "feel" the song. This song has some Doom Metal qualities to me. Black Sabbath created Doom and inspired many genres of music. You know how we listen to Doom? We sit back with our eyes closed and take it all in. Try Black Sabbath's Hand of Doom, Fairies Wear Boots, Into the Void, Snowblind or Megalomania. You got a taste with "The Wizard," but you need more. You are still adorable though.
Check out Judas Priest "Killing Machine", it sounds like some screaming heavy metal but it will actually surprise you, such a cool groove on that track, one of their best deep cuts imo
This is a total Boss Song. So good. The Bass, Drums , Guitars are all magnificent, but its Rob Halfords voice that is totally off the charts!!!!! What a great anti hard drinking song !!! This gets 11 of 10 gold records in my book.
You should react to Bob Dylan’s Gospel albums, Slow Train Coming, Saved, Shot Of Love. Specifically ‘Saved’, ‘What Can I Do For You?’, ‘Pressing On’. But they’re all great gospel songs I think you’d enjoy.
Saw them in 83' during the Defenders of the Faith tour and I remember Rob Halford at the end of this song the Rob blew out his mic during that final scream. He came out with another mic and joked damn there went another one I have a feeling my sound guy is going to put a hit out on after this tour lol.
