I'll take hockey tape over knurl any day. Much of that little knurl doesn't touch my back anyway. I can wrap tape around the entire smooth center and have contact across my entire traps.

My bar doesn't have the central knurl, but rust makes up for this :D I'm kind of worrying what will happen with it's grip after I have it renovated, which I planning to do.

This may sound unusual but everybody is different
Can you not wrap a tape on a barbell with ni center knurl?
Cuz I prefer without center knurl on front squat but knurl on back squat.
Planning to buy one without center knurl
If someone can let me know does knurling bruise your neck for practice
    Not planning to complete

You can certainly wrap athletic tape around a bar to act as a center knurl - we do this on occasion and lovingly refer to it as the "redneck center knurl." It works pretty well.
Interestingly, in weightlifting competitions (i.e., snatch and clean-and-jerk), the men's bar is required to have a center knurl as it does help a bit with the front squat portion of the clean (this rule is usually only closely enforced at national and international meets). With that said, a lot of people prefer to have a non-center knurl bar when practicing their C&Js.
All this said, if I was going for a good all-around bar, I'd go with the Starting Strength Bar as it's good for all of the lifts. That said, it does have a center knurl, and if you don't want that for your front squats, then athletic tape for a "knurl" will work pretty well for your regular squats.
Side note: I don't think you'll mind a center knurl for front squats - it's the actual catching/racking portion of the clean that causes a problem for some people. In the front squat, the bar just sits there, so the knurl shouldn't pose a problem, and indeed, I like having it when I front squat.

You can, and many people have - myself included - but I wouldn’t recommend it. If I can’t find a bar with a center knurl, and I have athletic tape (and if I’m training while traveling, I usually bring some), then I put some athletic tape on the bar, and that works quite well.

women's Olympic weightlifting barbell doesn't have a center knurl because it would form calluses and make their beautiful collarbone skin look nasty. Men dosen't care about that, so they have it on their olympic barbell. this is an explaination from Japan's top barbell company
