DIY 5 Gallon Bucket Aeroponic Cloner

- In a previous video I highlighted an aeroponic cloner, in this video I go over the process to build your own based on a 5 gallon bucket. This design has worked well for me in the past and for the same money as a prebuilt cloner you can make 5-6 of these units. Having more, smaller capacity units allows for a rotation of plants and it's easier to grow a variety of things that may need different amounts of time in the cloner.
Items used in this build:

Snippers - For more precise work such as cutting delicate leaves off of new starts, these Corona stainless steel snippers work great. They have a long narrow blade to get into the tight spots on your seedlings or to prune smaller plants. Link: amzn.to/2TZmk2B
Trowel - Now this isn't really classified as a trowel but the Corona Scopp is my everyday all prupose tool that I probably use more than anything else (besides the pruners). This is not the best for digging in the soil but I don't really do much of that in my food forest. This is an excellent tool for potting, which I do a lot of. Knife - This Morakniv knife has held up well, it stays sharp and while the blade has lost its bright color it has not rusted. I use this for opening bags of soil and cutting ropes and twine. Thank you so much! This is wonderful! Many years ago I lived in a high cold rain forest, in Central Mexico. We received 11' of precipitation a year, mainly in the form of drizzle. There, at 7500' altitude, it was pretty cool. We were able to root apples and plums by simply cutting the twig and sticking it in the ground. One time, a friend cut down a pear tree for firewood, in November and left the twigs on the ground. By April many of them had ROOTED! This technology makes me think of such conditions. I'm going to try it!
Do you think it would work on mulberries?

Could I use a quarter inch mister From a mini irrigation system And just make an Adaptor to fit the riser?
How often would you have the water on for the pump if starting to propagate (clone) some cuttings? I've heard 1 minute on / 5 minutes off, but I'm new to this. Looks nice !
I leave mine on all the time but have been thinking of trying the timer method.

Is there a time schedule on how long you keep the water running and how often do you change the water?
I let it run all day and night and only change the water when I do a new batch of cuttings. Some people have used timers to run it off and on throughout the day and have had good results.
I've had some issues getting my lemon tree cuttings to root in soil. Would you recommend this for citrus cuttings? Do you think the water sprinkling stimulation would prove more helpful?
It's worth a try, I think this method is best for soft wood cuttings though. Maybe try the sandbox / sand bucket method, that has worked well for me for the harder wood like figs.

It would be good to put panda film on the outside so you dont have to use the white bucket then you have another bucket for another system 😀 and put the panda film on it to keep the light out on the white buckets.

Do I need any additives solution or just plain ph water will work?
Plain water works, for more stubborn cuttings I have used this solution: amzn.to/3m8kNmP . I think you can find it cheaper with a quick search.
My OCD said put another hole in the middle of the bucket for a cord. Now It's one clone short for even number of 4"s. Your OCD has no game!
If I want more of a mist which head would you use..I'm going with the bigger pump
My results have shown that the head and spray pattern make very little difference. If you want a mist though I'd look at using some drip water system heads, they may have to be adapted.

Use a booster pump designed for reverse osmosis, (ideally dc voltage). A single upward firing misting nozzle will be more than enough for a 5gal bucket.
In the end, what matters most is success rate per $value.

No dome is needed? Do you have to keep the whole room that their in at a very high humidity?
No dome required, the roots are kept wet by the sprayers and the humidity in Florida is enough to keep the leaves from drying out.
12 inch round plastic cake pan.....5 gallon bucket is 12 inches around...the cake lids make nice domes
Where did you get the sprinkler head ? And what are specifics on it?
I bought the same sprinkler head from Lowe’s (Canada) but I’ve seen the same sprinkler brand at my local Home Depot.

Carl you use Clone X as well at the tip of the cutting?
My use of a pump added too much heat over time. So I changed to air bubbler.
Can you show us one with a misting head and link the other parts.

Hello, which pump are you using? If the small one, you need a piece of 1/2" CPVC pipe: www.lowes.com/pd/Charlotte-Pipe-1-2-in-x-5-ft-100-PSI-CPVC-Hot-Cold-Pipe/1000957530
The larger one uses 1/2" PVC. In either case you will need to cut the pipe, you only need a 2-3" length.

Is that really all the water you need in there?
Yes, not much is required. There is very little water loss since it is sealed up. You want to make sure the pump is covered and maybe an extra couple of inches but that is all you need.

Are you in the U.S.? Any home improvement store will have everything (Ace, Home Depot, Lowes). It's only a couple of dollars in parts.

I haven't tried it but they should be able to.

Pool noodles are better and cheaper then the rings you are using to plug the holes.
