Great video. I love self watering pots. I put the microfibre cloth up the side of the pot and leave a little poking out the top of the soil. When the cloth feels dry, the water reservoir is dry, so I know when to water without needing to lift the inner pot out.
I used the plastic caps off soda/water bottles to lift up the planted pots. Just put a layer of caps at the bottom of your cover/outer pot, 5 or more depending on size, and they lift up the inner pot by nearly 2cm which is usually just fine. Works great and they can take a lot of weight!
Thank you for the great idea. I might try this with my Adeniums. 13:59 Instead of lifting the inner pot, measure how much water you placed in the outer pot the first time, and from then on, add only half of that amount every two weeks.
I have know idea what I would do without you!!!! I’ve checked out other plant video however, you are beyond brilliant, informative and everything I need to help my plants become and stay healthy! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!!!! 🌴🎋🪴
I've done this (minus the cloth) with at least half of my plants in order to save money on buying more cement pots...it was getting very expensive (I like to have my plants in really nice pots). Now I learn that all I needed to do was add an ecloth and I could've had a self-watering pot. I Love it! I'll be adding an ecloth to all of them next month when the weather gets warmer. Thank you once again for a very informative video. ♥♥♥
I found in Ikea they sell tall outer pots (I got the small one for 12cm inner pot) in which the plastic inner pot will fit perfectly and there is lots of space left under it for water, perfect for selfmade selfwatering system 👌 and they look so smart and sleek too
I love how he explains it to me like im mentally challenged ❤ Good thing he makes sure to include the plant AND the soil in the list of items. I was so close to forgetting them😢
This is a great system. Since you haven't covered the drainage holes of the inner pot with stones / cloth/ husk will the soil from the inner pot not fall in the outer pot. Please advise
You don't need to destroy a useful pot - just stack plastic lids under your plant. I get vegan protein powder all the time and use the lids for bottom watering & raising plants up. I also have created my own self watering by stacking and alternating the top & bottom of some smaller plastic 2x2 inch so I can get the water meter past the stack.
Thank you so much... I have very hot dry summers and hard to keep up the water to the plants. I often lose a few each year... this will be a game changer for my thirsty cucumbers and capsicums. Cheers.🌿🫑🌶🥒
DIY- self watering pots rock! Especially my Calatheas have become so easy to handle with Lechuza pon and a self watering system. Neverthless not all of my plants seem to like my attitude towards pon. Maybe it's just my watering but somehow I got the feeling that it contains water pretty well whilst being rather dense which can animate some plants with sensitive roots to develop root rot? I would love to see you guys make a video about pon! And talking about plants with rather sensitive roots: A video about Alocasias would be awesome, too. Keep your good work on!
With thanks and gratitude for your detailed videos. With the cost of vegetables could you make a video to grow lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, sweet peppers, cabbage, broccoli Etc Abundant Blessings🙏❤️🇨🇦
I love this IDEA! Thank you!! But I have a question: can I use stones or rocks to lift it up? I bottom water my plants, and I use pebbles on the plates to help maintain the moisture in my plants.🪴 So, I was wondering if I could use pebbles, or rocks, or stones to lift them up instead of anither plastic pot. 🤔
I have 2 Monsteras on this system. There doing much better since. But recently some lower leaves are yellowing fast. Maybe it's because I'm not sure how to fertilise them this way. Any suggestions on how to best fertilise with this sytem? PS. Keep up the great work. Big fan.
Very important question. When the water down is finished. Do u water from the top or raise the plant and only from the bottom. I use pumice only. Thanks
Im making a self watering pot with terracotta so the water seeps through the clay. But i couldnt find a single thing on them on youtube. Be great to see that kind on here. Love your channel.
Hmm may be you can put leca at the bottom of the big pot and then put the plant with it’s original pot or new bigger pot on top of the leca. Since the leca has raised the height. Use the root as wicking medium. Wouldn’t it be more simpler?
Speaking from experience, the leca is so light/airy it floats so the inner pot just sinks to the bottom of the outer pot. I repaired it by putting a few of those plastic-pizzabox-lid-open-keeping-thingies in the outer pot, add leca to the level of the thingies, add inner pot et voilá.
Not shure about micro fiber cloth but nylon tights are perfect for self watering systems. No organics so dont rot quickly and are good in absorbing water. Also 1 pair of tights = alot of strings... really alot. Also instead of cutting pot may use plastic cups or botles... or piece styrofoam or anything no organical. And dont use too big inner pot if roots are not very developed. In my expriece small root system+big pot+self watering = dead plant 🥺
Thank you. great instructions. 1. how does the soil not pass through the holes in the bottom of inner pot? 2. Still you have lift the inner pot to see how much water is there left. Can you please show us a)by the use of a simple tube with a floater and 2)or a cheap home made electronic component system ( with and LED indicator - dry vs wet soil works on LR2302 battery- long lasting!). that then takes away need to lift the inner pot to check!! Hope you can show us that construction. Best wishes. Sudhir
In other videos you say you use only pumice and clay. But in other videos you act as if you do use soil. Do you use pumic-clay-only for ALL your plants or are there plants that do better in other media? In that case which plants and which medium? That would be a great video.
Not understanding why in this video he didn't untangle the bottom of the roots with his rake tool as in a previous video he said to do this so roots point more down, since they were quite bound at the bottom?
The cloth goes up the side only if you are not repotting. If you are repotting then it goes up the side to give you enough cloth to lay over the bottom layer of soil, which then brings water to the whole plant.
It would have been nice to actually see the water level in the fill stage for those of us who are visual learners. Just a tip from all of the ADHD gardeners out here. ❤
Pencil for marking is dumb unnecessary, and micro fiber cloth is not absorbent so dont expect it can suck the water up, i just wont happen in that particular project because of the gravity

Any chance you can make a video on options for staking up climbing plants and airiods?
Thank you for the great idea. I might try this with my Adeniums. 13:59 Instead of lifting the inner pot, measure how much water you placed in the outer pot the first time, and from then on, add only half of that amount every two weeks.

Never miss a video since I discovered your channel...

The most detailed DIY educational and demonstration so far. Many tks.
Thank you for a great demonstration. Your channel continues to be an educational joy! I will try this with one of my plants. All the best! 👍💖
A detail explanation so beautifully and precisely and gently delivered to the point.

What’s the name of the pot
UA-cam is amazing. I learned a lot of things.
This is awesome! I have a ton of nursery pots that my plants have outgrown.
I love how he explains it to me like im mentally challenged ❤
Good thing he makes sure to include the plant AND the soil in the list of items.
I was so close to forgetting them😢
I’ll have to try this. I bought some small self watering pots and love them, but for larger plants purchasing them can be quite expensive.
You always provide such great explanations of why and how. Love your videos.

Great video! I’m a Middle School Teacher and I’m always looking for enrichment ideas to do with my students. Your video is so easy to follow.
Excellent video. This is really helpful to me. I have many plants and is very difficult to water them especially in the summer. Thank you so much.

great video with really good advice and tips. Thank you very much

I bottom water my plants, and I use pebbles on the plates to help maintain the moisture in my plants.🪴 So, I was wondering if I could use pebbles, or rocks, or stones to lift them up instead of anither plastic pot. 🤔
Of course, I use leca or perlite to lift inner pot to my desired level.

Great informatons on your channel 👍 is it possible do put also the Calatheas in the self watering pots ? 🌞
Good info
I love your pots. Do you have a source you can link? Have to try this with those thirsty peace lilies. Thanks for the great tutorial.
Not sure if it's the same, but that big outer pot looks just like one I got at Ikea.

can this also be done for outdoor plants? :)
If used cocopeat as soil media will this self watering system cause root rot?, plant peace lily
Can you do this method with lechuza pon?

Could you please share video about Peace Lily.

I like your tools. Its kitchen not planting table 👍🌹nice and clean work.
Can l use biobizz soil in self watering pot, is there enough drainage.will be using ac-infinity self watering pot bases for self watering.

Can we break leca into smaller pieces for this method. Small sized leca are unavailable
💚
6:10 sir, is only one strip is enough for the pot?
Won't the roots rot if the soil is constantly moist?
Your intro jingle kind of reminds me of Seinfeld lol
Please make a video how to do that I am living in a Berlin
Not understanding why in this video he didn't untangle the bottom of the roots with his rake tool as in a previous video he said to do this so roots point more down, since they were quite bound at the bottom?
Doesn't that water reservoir at the bottom of the pot make a home for mosquitos or other insects to lay eggs??
I always think the same thing…
How to fertilize this
what if i dont use any cloth?
Mosquitoes will love hanging around these pots
13:43 That's not how wicking works, the water isn't going to drip down because it's never going to absorb more water than the soil can hold on to.
Will mosquito lay eggs?
🤓👍👍🙏
Why is it important to put the cloth against the wall of the pot instead of the middle?
The cloth goes up the side only if you are not repotting. If you are repotting then it goes up the side to give you enough cloth to lay over the bottom layer of soil, which then brings water to the whole plant.
The exposed water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes!
Yea well we dont have mosquitos inside the house in Sweden
@@Bolcjek yeah well not all your audience stay in a place free of mosquitoes
