And the best parts: 1) When you want to drive for an errand or day trip, minimal hassle, unlike a rooftop tent 2) If you arrive after dark, you're already set up 3) Most of your gear stays locked in the truck, even for short trips 4) You're not on the ground 5) Hard shell beats fabric/poles in the wind and rain Great work!
I just helped my grandpa with his build. He has a 1985-1989 Chevy and we have two beds which are 6 feet long and 3 feet wide. Then we have a table with a mini stove a sink and food. We have a tv and some lights that are battery powered. Overall it’s really nice and I hope you finished your build.
just made this exact setup after watching this for my 2015 Ram 1500 with the 6'4 Bed, If any of you watching this have a 2009-2019 Ram with a 6'4 bed, these are the measurements for the wood you need. - For the Two Wheel well pieces that will be two 2x4's 70 1/2 inch - For the horizontal bed slots that will be 5 1x6's 66 inch - For the 4 towers on all corners that will be four 2x4's 10 inch tall - For the two pieces of plywood that go over the slots for the bedframe that will be two sections each one cut 33 inches wide by 70 1/2 inches long - Reflectix is found in insulation at Home depot, while your having the wood cut Grab two Rolls and some reflectix aluminum tape, that will be enough to cover all the ply wood and some extra left over. - For the mattress I got a full size queen mattress that measured 60x80 and it fits nice and tight and i got to slam the tailgate shut to smush it in but I have the added convenience of a full size mattress, if you dont want to go this route just grab some foam at home depot or a 4 inch queen mattress topper. follow this and everything will fit perfect :)
Budget Shooter thank you for posting this information. It is very helpful. I believe the only thing you left out was the 1x10” support which should also be 70 1/2 inches. The drawers don’t have to be as exact.
Hey Budget Shooter, do you have a bed liner in the truck? I was just leaving for Lowes when I saw your post, trying to figure if I need to adjust 1/2 and inch...
Agree with you , people don't realize the more wood you have the more weight you have to lug around as well, i know this as a friend of mine years ago made big ass cupboards , draws and other storage every where and the poor van struggled lol.
The best bed platform I've seen yet! And I've been watching every one I can find. I wanted a slat bed rather than a solid sheet of plywood. This is brilliant! Efficient, lighter, fast to set up. Thank you for sharing it!
Love the simplicity of this! Most people make super over the top frames and drawers. Real campers need something that JUST WORKS. Awesome video! Just screw in these pieces of wood to these pieces of wood and add a mattress. Thats all people need!
I love it. It's simple, it's functional, and I don't have to commit my truck to a lifestyle to do it. Also it replaces the need for an expensive rooftop tent. Thanks man, I'm going to steal this idea!
I've been looking to do the same thing and your setup was the easiest. Kudos for the Reflectix idea. I'm critical of the Yeti coolers tho. NOTHING justifies the price, they are for the well heeled Glampers who are now pushing the poor guy out of camp sites all over America. The price is outrageous. They only last 1 day longer than your 5day Coleman which with proper care should last decades. And two are affordable, one for drinks that open frequently and one for food that gets opened at mealtime. Then you will have money leftover to pay admission fees for campsites and tourist attractions along the way. THX for the video.
Brady - I completed the build this weekend, but painted everything and added a drawer on the right side. Thanks for the instruction and design - very helpful!!
is there anyway you can help me out and give me dimensions of the bomber that I'll need and the cuts I will probably end up living in my truck with a next couple months, and it would be helpful
I just did this!!!! I finished in less than a week despite working two full time jobs. It only cost about $250 including mattress, lumber, and insulation. Thanks so much for the guide man!!!
@@adolfogonzalez6320 just a cheap full size. I just went into a mattress firm and told him exactly what I was looking for and what it was for. He ended up knocking off 30 bucks cause he enjoyed the convo and the idea. Got it for 70 which is 30 less than the cheapest on amazon, plus I got to try it before I bought it
That middle floor truss could be blocked in like you did with the bed slats , and you wouldn't have to screw it in at all, just add the blocks on the bottom-side of the slats and it's a done deal, but all in all it's a pretty sweet set-up, just throwing my two-cents in , might work, might not, you'd find out in the middle of the night if it collapsed , Ha,ha,ha !!!
Been looking at a ton of truck camping set ups, this is easily the cheapest/highest quality build that isn’t permanent. I use my truck for all sorts of stuff and can’t have stuff in the back all the time. Love how it’s just dropping in a few pre-made pieces and and a few screws and sliding a few things in and your freaking camping. Thanks for the video I’ll definitely be doing this to my truck after I get a camper shell.
This is the most versatile and simplest I've seen on UA-cam. This makes it worthwhile for me. I am pondering now some adjustments I can make to have this work for me but thank you very much. Is permanent build with heavy drawers don't make sense this is what I need it's lighter weight Justice sturdy over and useful. Perhaps even more so because there isn't a giant structure to move in out of the truck. There's only some lightweight pieces. Thank you.
Thank you, this has been so helpful. My wife and I have been camping throughout our home state California for several years, but now have a Chevy Silverado and want to do more road trips in it. This is the perfect tutorial for utilizing space in an organized and comfortable way.
That's badass man, I love that you created it yourself and didn't buy a already build thing, gets that creative side of the brain flowing awesome job man
wow..thank you for showing..takes the scary right out of how to do it. im just starting to think about a truck..full time..always wanted a van but interested in the truck life. alot of thinking to do...always stayed away from wanting a truck cause it was too hard to build....you proved its not...LOVE the under bed drawers!!!!! I FREAKED when you threw a 300$ YETI from the roof!!!!! wow
Thank you so much for posting this! I’ve been looking at builds for about a month now and you had my same truck and cap set up. I ended up using 6 - 2x4s instead of the 5 - 1x6s. The only other real differences I had was that I have a spray in liner and not a plastic so some of the curvatures are different. I’m debating on doing a headliner on my cap but at this point I don’t think it’s necessary. But anyways thank you so much for your wonderful videos! I also wanted to add that I ended up building this with only a Skilsaw and some deck screws and my entire Home Depot bill came out to $105. Way cheaper than buying a small travel camper and I can travel stealth still!
Man this exactly what i couldnt think of. Ive been super over thinking this whole thing and didnt want to mount anything to the bed permanently. You get a sub from me
Finally I found a video that I can actually afford to fulfill my dream of road adventure.. I can't afford the luxury homes on wheels and roof top camping... THIS IS SIMPLE AND INSPIRING. Never had this idea until now . Thank you so much.. imma hit the road very soon now..
Nice set up. We got rid of the cooler in lieu of the new 12 volt refrigerators that are priced so competitively now. Our 50 qt compressor freon refrigerator was $276 on eBay. It fits in the back seat of the truck and connected to a separate deep cycle battery with solar controller and 100 watt panel on top so I don't drain the main battery. Uses only 50 watts of power when it cycles on. Its been a game changer for us as we don't need ice anymore. Imagine no melted water, soggy food. It goes below freezing so we can bring nicer things like frozen shrimp , fish and yes even ice cream.
Thanks so much for this! I’m going to do pretty much this exact frame. Never built anything before but you definitely make it sound easy enough. Greatly appreciated for the step by step rundown you do!
Nicely done! Very simple and versatile set up, and efficient use of space. I especially like that you designed this to be something you can remove if you need your truck for... well, truck stuff. Classy answer to the intimate durability question. I served in the US Navy, where we had to eak out every cubic inch - and I tip my hat to your design. Thank you for sharing this.
Seems like making a dado in the bottom-side of the slats, would be a great alternative to having to screw and unscrew those two boards. A fairly tight fitting dado is plenty sturdy enough, plus it avoids the need of using tools/hardware to be screwing/unscrewing into narrow wood, which will be prone to splitting as time goes on, and running out of new wood to screw into, or slowly enlarging existing holes. I do like how quick and easy it looks to install/uninstall. Thanks for sharing. Aloha
Most budget friendly vid ive seen. Im not handy with woodworking much but i can definately do this....just need to decide what kinda camper shell i want first lol
love your easy solution.....just got a Toyota Tacoma and going to follow your method to make a bed.......and i will be free like a bird......thanks very much pal.
Perfect simple setup man! This is exactly what I'm looking to do with my recent truck purchase. Thanks for putting the guy together 👍 I think when I build mine I might try to do it without screws, if possible... to make it easy to break down for if I want to get wood chips and such
How easy or difficult would it be to make a pass through from the camper into the cab? I'd love to be able to go full time with a truck rather than an RV or trailer but I have to have access to the drivers seat from the interior. How would you pull that off? Would you make a video of it maybe?
Hello, I just came to see your clip for the first time. I have already followed you. I live in Thailand. i like your clip very much Thank you for making a good clip for us to watch.
They can’t go on the back seat because that is probably where the dogs ride, but yeah you could just set it on the bed while driving until you get to the camp site
Love the video - thank you! I have a couple questions if you have time: 1) If I want my platform to be higher (about 18 inches high) how would you go about putting in the spine that runs from front to back down the middle of bed? Would you cut plywood and run it and, if so, how would you secure the the plywood support? Or could you totally skip having that ridge spine down the middle if you used thicker slats? 2) Since it will be so high, would you use 4x4s at each of the four corners to avoid it seeming unsteady on stilts? I won't be able to use the wheel wells for supports since it will be higher than those. Any ideas greatly appreciated, and thanks for posting the video!
Thank you so much.My research stops here and going with this super easy and brilliant set up for my pajero. The interior is pretty much the same so it's gonna be straight forward. I usually bring my kids and bicycles along so i hv to remove the wheels because of height clearance is reduced. Overall this saves a lot of unnecessary and costly modifications.
So glad I found this video! I've got a van I was trying to figure out how to do, I'll have TONS more headroom. This'll be a GREAT starting point, thanks!
Instead of having to screw the board to the middle support, couldn't you use a wooden or metal pin/peg/dowel to drop into pre drilled hole? Just a thought
@@BradyHommel for the middle support in my set up I used plywood. This allowed me to custom fit the center support with proud ends that are high enough to hug the front and back cross boards. I then screwed some jibs on these cross boards to make a pseudo mortise and tenon joint. No screws are needed to set up and tare down
Nice. I’m going fly fishing next weekend (9/3/22) and am tired of just throwing a sleeping bag and mat in the back of my GMC Sonoma 4x4 truck bed with a lined shell. I have a ton of scrap and am going to do a buildout today. Just looking for a few simple ideas. I like this one and one other I saw yesterday which was a little different.
There’s a couple things I’d add for extra stability, like screw guides for the center board so you don’t have to worry about that flexing or sliding out and falling. Great idea, definitely plan on basing my design, glad I found this because I really did not want to throw a mattress on a bare bed.
For sure. Definetly lots of ways this can be improved. I literally just through it together with mostly what I had laying around. Good luck on your build! 👍
Thanks a lot! Yes it is the 100xq with roof racks. I wouldnt recommend it tho. Back door leaks which has caused the latches the sieze up and not work correctly. And for the price you pay for it, it is unacceptable. It looks good for a truck cap but that's about it.
Super late to this but what an incredible idea! Hoping to try this soon as I just got my first ever truck after years of sticking to SUVs and Cars. Hopefully the Frontier and I can have some fun soon!
Is is it sturdy enough for "extracurricular activities"... lol... can you post an instructional video for it, please :-). Joking aside, I really like the simplicity and most of all modularity, that it can be taken out to turn the truck back into a transportation vehicle. I shall do try this with my old Jeep Grand Wagoneer!
To go from fewer than 1k subscribers to 2.8k in 3 months is fantastic! Wish I could do that! I suppose all it takes is a great video like yours and asking people to subscribe. Any suggestions? Any you are correct: that is SIMPLE and DOES fill the need! Good Job, Brady!
Lol, its good for extra curricular activities. I am glad you mentioned that. I bet you could read all night long on this bed. You could read real hard. Looks like you could even read two books at the same time. It's that sturdy.
Excellent job! Comfortable, cheap and easy to build is my style....and the dogs look like they love it! Thanks for sharing and I found the video very informative, cheers from Australia!
This is a sweet build! But with all my fishing gear IDK if it'll work out for me? But I usually just camp in a tent. But I do absolutely love this build! Thanks for sharing!
Thankyou, I inherited a 2003 f150 longbed and want to go to the beach with my truck. Great instructions. Cannot afford the camper top and will probably get the tent that goes over the bed. I was wondering about the bed setup with storage underneath and you showed me how simple it is. Thankyou. T
Hi All!! I have posted another one if your interested give it a watch!! >>>> ua-cam.com/video/949SWiSWc7A/v-deo.html
That's a super simple set up. I couldn't imagine not being able to fully sit up, but you got the outdoors to enjoy
How do you get open and close the back while your in it?
What kind of roof rack is that? Is it removable.
And the best parts:
1) When you want to drive for an errand or day trip, minimal hassle, unlike a rooftop tent
2) If you arrive after dark, you're already set up
3) Most of your gear stays locked in the truck, even for short trips
4) You're not on the ground
5) Hard shell beats fabric/poles in the wind and rain
Great work!
Thank you!!! I had to sift through so much “van conversion” nonsense to find this perfect simple video! This gives me such hope. ✌🏻
Thanks! Good luck on your build!
Well they are living out their van for months at a time so it’s not nonsense but good luck on your built

Ikr!! I had giving up but then I got on and this popped up in my feed and I immediately clicked it and got I need. The best truck bed setup ever!
lot of people go way overboard , you made it nice and simple
i can bet you people that go overboard never actually use it like it’s meant to be used. it’s mostly for show
just made this exact setup after watching this for my 2015 Ram 1500 with the 6'4 Bed, If any of you watching this have a 2009-2019 Ram with a 6'4 bed, these are the measurements for the wood you need.
- For the Two Wheel well pieces that will be two 2x4's 70 1/2 inch
- For the horizontal bed slots that will be 5 1x6's 66 inch
- For the 4 towers on all corners that will be four 2x4's 10 inch tall
- For the two pieces of plywood that go over the slots for the bedframe that will be two sections each one cut 33 inches wide by 70 1/2 inches long
- Reflectix is found in insulation at Home depot, while your having the wood cut Grab two Rolls and some reflectix aluminum tape, that will be enough to cover all the ply wood and some extra left over.

Mark Hankinson I have the factory spray in bed liner on my truck, not the plastic tub style bedliner. Not sure if any adjustments need to be made
At long last I have found a setup that makes sense! I don't want all the "you bute" stuff everyone promotes. Keep it simple!

No speak inglês. 😓
👏👏👏 very good my friend!
Good luck! 😂😂😂

So glad I found this video! I've got a van I was trying to figure out how to do, I'll have TONS more headroom. This'll be a GREAT starting point, thanks!
Glad I could help! 👍 definetly way more headroom in a van! Good luck on your build man!
Instead of having to screw the board to the middle support, couldn't you use a wooden or metal pin/peg/dowel to drop into pre drilled hole? Just a thought
That is a great idea!
Lmfaooo “uhhh, yeah. It is. That’s all I’m gonna say”
He obviously knows from experience 😂
There’s a couple things I’d add for extra stability, like screw guides for the center board so you don’t have to worry about that flexing or sliding out and falling. Great idea, definitely plan on basing my design, glad I found this because I really did not want to throw a mattress on a bare bed.
For sure. Definetly lots of ways this can be improved. I literally just through it together with mostly what I had laying around. Good luck on your build! 👍
Brady Hommel usually the most fun builds are the ones that get thrown together without thought😂 some great ideas for it, I’m glad I found your video!
Love it! Simple, practical and effective!
Glad you Like it!!
Oh my you were right so easy and affordable!! going to take some of your tips and build something similar for my chevy colorado.
This is a slick setup man. Thanks for sharing! You would be hard pressed to find a better removable set up!
Thanks a lot John!
good idea
Thanks. Just built this today for my bear hunt coming up. Easiest version I've seen on YT.
Great to hear! Good luck on your hunt!
Like your setup and love the dogs, they sure remember how much fun they have camping. Is that a Leer campershell ? Thanks.
Thanks a lot! Yes it is the 100xq with roof racks. I wouldnt recommend it tho. Back door leaks which has caused the latches the sieze up and not work correctly. And for the price you pay for it, it is unacceptable. It looks good for a truck cap but that's about it.
@@BradyHommel had same problem with my leer on a frontier, some water still got in. thinking about going A.R.E with high top on my tacoma.
@@michaelm4514 high top would definetly be convenient for camping like this! 👍
Love the set up. My husband and I just got a Kodiak truck tent and we have been wanting to do something like this. Love the idea.
Glad you like it!
Very interesting well organized camping car.. cool I want to remodel my mini van as well
Super late to this but what an incredible idea! Hoping to try this soon as I just got my first ever truck after years of sticking to SUVs and Cars. Hopefully the Frontier and I can have some fun soon!
Excelent! Loved it! 👏👏👏👏👏
LaCocinadera was
That is sooooo cool think I will try this on my Ford 150 I have a camper shell on it looks great will give it a try thanks
this is soo amazing...I loved it..😍😍
Is is it sturdy enough for "extracurricular activities"... lol... can you post an instructional video for it, please :-). Joking aside, I really like the simplicity and most of all modularity, that it can be taken out to turn the truck back into a transportation vehicle. I shall do try this with my old Jeep Grand Wagoneer!
Just became a new sub.
WOW... The simplicity was amazing. Thanks.
your welcome!
You should come to ssm ontario and help me build mine!!!!
Plan on doing this build in a week or so. Can’t wait to get started !
Best of luck to you!
Please Help me hit 1000 subscribers and hit subscribe. Thanks!

To go from fewer than 1k subscribers to 2.8k in 3 months is fantastic! Wish I could do that! I suppose all it takes is a great video like yours and asking people to subscribe. Any suggestions?
Any you are correct: that is SIMPLE and DOES fill the need! Good Job, Brady!
liked and subbed. great vid. tfs
Great information. Thank you for sharing.
Lol, its good for extra curricular activities. I am glad you mentioned that. I bet you could read all night long on this bed. You could read real hard. Looks like you could even read two books at the same time. It's that sturdy.
I gonna have to call up Yeti and complain that you threw 1 of there yeti on the ground lol just kidding..
Haha 😂
I just bought 2004 Silverado w/ 6'6" bed and I'm loving your designs as I dream about what kind of setup I want!
Same size bed! Ive got another video design i did as well. check it out
Excellent job! Comfortable, cheap and easy to build is my style....and the dogs look like they love it! Thanks for sharing and I found the video very informative, cheers from Australia!
"Extra circular activities" 😭
I'm talking like.. REALLY round ones.
This is a sweet build! But with all my fishing gear IDK if it'll work out for me? But I usually just camp in a tent. But I do absolutely love this build! Thanks for sharing!
I’m on acid watching this
Lucky you, I'm just here normally. Fml, lol
How are you feeling? 😂
jose mora lol well I was feeling amazing then. Not so great right now lol
Thankyou, I inherited a 2003 f150 longbed and want to go to the beach with my truck. Great instructions. Cannot afford the camper top and will probably get the tent that goes over the bed. I was wondering about the bed setup with storage underneath and you showed me how simple it is. Thankyou. T
Glad to hear that man! Safe travels!
Exactly what I was looking for. So many designs are too intricate and not easy to take in and out. Thanks for posting.
Glad you like it! :)
Been trying to figure something out for my own truck, this is going to be perfect! Awesome video!
