Sir, your design is simple, cheap to make but very effective. I am a retired man so I don't need to build it, but some young person just starting out this idea is wonderful for them. I do appreciate you for your brotherhood mentality. All the best to you and your family and always in good health.
Simple yet effective and it's heartwarming to see someone on this platform generously sharing their ideas and plans to simply help others without asking for anything in return. I will be sending you an email for the plans. You are a gentleman, sir. All the best!
I have seen these done in several different ways, and after seeing your design, I'm glad that I have been procrastinating because this is absolutely perfect for what I need. Somewhere to put all my stuff to cover anything that I might encounter from footing to ridge cap and all things in-between. I already had a couple of little personal things I may do to a drawer or two. This really is some good thought that you put into this system. I keep gaining weight and years, and my days of bed crawling are becoming more and more frustrating. Thank You for sharing this, because I am going to build this one, it's perfect for what I need.
Nice and simple yet very effective system. Some of the others complicated and costly. Thanks for sharing this. Especially the cutting board for sliders tip.
Your truck setup says impressively good things about your resourcefulness and work quality. Great advertising that promises a quality job in other respects.
Great job. You got that truck packed but then again you probably do a little bit of everything which means you have to carry around a little bit of everything
Good idea I loved being organized when all my coworkers are messing around in their tonto covers with everything pilled on top, I go into my suv with my pack outs and it’s just so flipping easy compared to them. Look at this cause I want to upgrade and do something similar organized and clean is the way to go
I built a set of these a couple of years ago and used laminate flooring for the sliding. Face up on top of the drawers and face down on the bottom of the slider. Works really well.
I’ve been watching every carpentry and building related video I could find and just now came across your channel, and I’m really glad I did. I also saw your battery mount video, great idea! You’ve given me some great things to go off of for my projects. Thanks for posting!
Awesome build, I did something very similar , the only thing that I did different was the top slider. I used those little rolling balls type mechanism. Maybe put a stop of some sort on the slider. I got a new truck now and did side tool boxes with a home made slider. I found out much better than a van to work out of. You dont have to go in and out. Also a small open trailer with a ramp at the end of the job for clean up works better than putting garbage in and out of a van. . Really organization makes job go better and easier 👍
Putting leds inside tomorrow, only had them since day 1 and still have not installed. Really could go without but it would look cool. Put the easy drop gate thingy on there that I've had in my toolbox for 3 years. Dodge made some heavy gates in 2003. And then I am starting on my 6×12 cargo trailor lil rolling shop and chill spot in the summer. Genorator and AC!!!!
I built one after starting my own business and losing my worktruck to my old job. 6'5" bed, built it just up to the fiberglass tonnou cover and 5' deep. 50 inches wide it just did fit between the wheel wells. Made two large drawers with doors on the top of the cabinet just in case it gets jammed. Now that I have figured out better ways to use the space I am going to make the very back of each drawer two levels for things I don't use everyday. So much easier to get to everything without crawling in or getting hung up on the arms or supports of the cover. Keeps it nice and neat. Should have done it to my work truck years ago.
Loved the train in the background, I'm jealous you get to be that close! Great video though, now my mind is made up - I'm building yours instead of spending $3,000 on a commercial setup!
Thank you for the idea of cutting up those plastic cutting boards I was trying to find a cheap way of making the drive slide out I saw other videos where they had this Bolt bearing tape set up but quite honestly it looked very time-consuming and expensive I know the dollar store has these cutting boards for a buck each can’t beat that
Great job on that. If you were to buy one it would cost a small fortune and still not exactly what you want. This way you save and have it the way you want it . great stuff
Great video! Most of the videos I saw were made by people who thought they were making top line furniture. Your design is plain and simple - like me. I'm subscribed and looking forward to these and other plans.
Never enough tools and room, going to build one in one of my Van's, to much work no time to geterdn, have to do something, going to wax everything , guess that works slick and water proofs the wood, going to try and make mine 19 inches tall, try and get some of the festool boxes in or take tools out, not sure yet. Thanks for video
Yes taller would be better. I am going to paint mine black this summer. Using rustoleum black paint. That’s the best paint I’ve found that stands up to heavy abuse.
I am trying to build one of these, but weight is a fairly big factor in the equation. They will only be holding tow straps, ratchet straps, and a small ratchet/socket kit, jumper cables, gloves, machete, very compact air compressor (5 lbs max), basically fairly lightweight stuff. Do you think 1/2" plywood would work? I plan to use a very high grade construction adhesive and finishing staples (or nails) to construct it.
Thanks for taking the time to produce a great instructional video on the fit-out drawers. You have done a perfect job, simple but very effective. Keeping it simple is what I have been looking for. I am just re-doing a truck very similar to yours and I think your ideas are just what's needed for me. Email on the way for a copy of the plans...hopefully you are still still doing the email back. Thanks again for some great ideas, cheers from me, from Queensland, Australia
Very nice design. The only thing I can’t find anyone doing is adding some sort of leg structure that would drop down as the entire cabinet is slid out. First the front legs would drop down and you would lock them, possible with casters, then as you got close to the other end the back legs would start to unfold , then you would lock them down. This would allow you to remove all the tools at once and even roll in a second cabinet loaded with alternate gear (fishing, camping, etc). Any thoughts on a safe way to accomplish that? Thanks!!!
My design relies on the tail gate to support the drawer when extended. But I sometimes remove the system completely. When I do I have custom made dollies that I use to move the drawers around on my shop floor. You could also just set them on sawhorses. The drop down legs seem like a good idea. The only issue would be the storage space loss for the drop legs.
Correct I have a dual liner in my bed which has a rubber mat bottom which doesn’t let things slide. The tailgate holds the drawers weight when open and the other drawers weight keeps the box from wanting to tip up. Hope that helps. This way I can take everything out in about 1/2 hour if I need to haul something large.
Great video thanks for sharing. Do you think coating the drawers with polyurethane will negatively affect the sliding motion on the UHMW? I’m doing something similar and I’m debating whether or not to coat the wood.
BACKYARD WOODSHOP okay great, I’m gonna do it then. I had one person tell me not to because he argues that after a while polyurethane becomes “gummy”, but I just really only see it as being an advantage. Last question, can you sand UHMW down, or will roughing it up cause it to loose the slickness? I have a couple uneven areas where I countersunk holes for the screws and I’m wondering the best way to smooth them down. Any ideas? Thanks for the reply.
Beautiful pragmatism .. I have tried vertikal racking in a small van . just dont work . Under floor drawers around 20 to 30 cm are a must have to store Ladders and pretty much all tools etc .. or what ever you use and then use the large floor space for machines etc.. But the real answer is to simply get a high roofed Ford transit or similar,
hi. I have similar idea for the top board without drawers. do you think your top board can hold 300kg (even more )and move forward and back easily? thanks for reply in advance.
Liked and subscribed. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Want to set up my HVAC work truck this way. Ill be emailing you for a set of plans as well.

That top slide is darn good thinking. Love the cutting board slides! We'll done sir.
Thank you for watching, I really appreciate it
I built a set of these a couple of years ago and used laminate flooring for the sliding. Face up on top of the drawers and face down on the bottom of the slider. Works really well.
That’s another good suggestion for a slide

My favorite version thus far

It sounds like a nice system you had.
I keep adding improvements as I notice better ways to improve my efficiency.

Yes 1/2” would definitely work for more of a light weight box.

Very nicely done. Just one question; what type of plastic strip did you use for the sliders ( the white strips) thanks and congrats.
The strips can be made from white plastic cutting boards. Just cut them into strips.
Nice Build
Thank you
So you didn't screw it or bolt it down to your bed, correct?
Correct I have a dual liner in my bed which has a rubber mat bottom which doesn’t let things slide. The tailgate holds the drawers weight when open and the other drawers weight keeps the box from wanting to tip up. Hope that helps. This way I can take everything out in about 1/2 hour if I need to haul something large.
That's exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you for watching
Do you use helper springs to help handle the weight?
No my tailgate hold the drawer weight when open.
Great video thanks for sharing. Do you think coating the drawers with polyurethane will negatively affect the sliding motion on the UHMW? I’m doing something similar and I’m debating whether or not to coat the wood.
I would think it would help to lessen friction. Poly is just plastic really. If you were to sand it and wax it would probably work really well
BACKYARD WOODSHOP okay great, I’m gonna do it then.
I would use a hand plane on them and shave them down, it would be a lot faster Or you can use a chisel. Sanding will work if you only have that.
@@thomrider Okay, I will probably just use a flat head screw driver and chisel them away as I don’t have a hand plane. Thanks for all the help

hi. I have similar idea for the top board without drawers.
do you think your top board can hold 300kg (even more )and move forward and back easily? thanks for reply in advance.
Thank you for watching. yes i have had over 1000lbs of weights on the slide out and it slid out pretty well.
Great job!. Thank you for sharing this amazing idea. What did you use for the lower drawers sliders?
Thank you for watching, I used plastic cutting boards sliced into 1/2” strips.
Thank you for watching, it’s just plastic cutting boards sliced into 1/2” strips.
I’m considering using a hyfax runner kit.
If you think it will work well. Sounds good to me.
Very nice. Where in ky are you from?
Northern Kentucky close to Cincinnati
@@thomrider I'm from Shepherdsville just south of Louisville

I guess I did slide those in and out a few to many times. Some times I tend to ramble. Lol
Good info, good build!
Thank you for watching
How does it slide? Is it just wood on wood?
No there are plastic runner strips made from sliced up plastic cutting boards.
Those are great! Do you have a link for the plans?
Just email. Backyardwoodshop@gmail.com. Ask for truck drawer plans
