    I don't have much experience gaming but when I was a little kid and played super Mario 3 and going through world 5, the first time I found out there was most of the world is in the clouds... that shocked me so much. Nobody told me, and the first time I had the skills to do that was a magical moment.

      Oh yeah,
      Super Mario Bros. 3 had So Many different things that i thought were so cool when i first learned about or saw them, like Giant World, the Tanooki suit, warp whistles, the inventory slots, all the new costumes, Mario 3 was special.
      Super Mario World on SNES had an area that i thought was awesome the first time i found it, the forest zone was something i had only ever seen on TV during an episode of Hangin With Mr.Cooper, one of the characters in the show was playing SNES and it was in one of the forest zone lvls. A year later we finally got SNES with Mario All Stars+ Mario World and like 2 months after that i found it and thought it was the coolest thing to interact with the new enemies and be in the same area i saw on a TV show.
      It was a simpler time 😄👍

    I dunno, I'd say Super Metroid's big unforgettable moment was the final few moments of the game. "The Baby" begins to drain Samus, realizes who she is and hurries away, only to come back in the Mother Brain fight to save Samus and drain Mother Brain of all of her power, sacrificing itself in the process.
    That was some great 16-bit storytelling right there and I'd say it was a much more satisfying and unforgettable ending than just showing Samus without her suit on at the end of the original Metroid 😅

    This list is a really cool look at gaming history. The only moment that I'm stunned about is Final Fantasy X. A kiss is more iconic than learning that the summoner is sacrificed? That entire sequence is one of the best cutscenes I can even remember, and it's the emotional fulcrum of the story. I'm shocked that it didn't at least get a mention. I would be happy to see another list like this though. I definitely feel like there would be at least 101 more moments that would be worthy of this kind of spotlight. The final story reveal in To the Moon, The final transformation of Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and the appearance of junimos for the first time in Stardew Valley would up there for me.

    Honestly, a list like this could help bolster the argument that video games are art. The fact that we have more than 2 hours of content here, detailing iconic moments in games from across the years, that leave an impact as big as any movie, TV show or song, it really shows what the medium can do and the kind of impact they can leave when done exceptionally well.

    • @carlgriff
      @carlgriff Рік тому +1

      I’d say that argument has long gone now. It’s like arguing if cinema is art. I think it’s widely acknowledged that video games are art.
      However much someone wants to value it as an art form is the bigger question!

    • @kriscynical
      @kriscynical Рік тому +1

      That is such a non-issue at this point. Beyond all of the merits of videogames themselves, game design is a major at most _ART SCHOOLS._ Even if you don't major in game design, the big studios go to art schools to recruit computer animation and illustration students every single year.
      How anybody could argue that something taught in art schools isn't art is beyond me at this point, honestly.

The scene that’s stuck with me in the game is when a crowd of civilians are angry and trying to get through them without killing anyone. Favourite personal moments for me in gaming:
    - Booting up Lemmings for the first time in almost thirty years after having found it on the Microsoft store. I also remember back when we played it as kids we made up dirty lyrics to the catchy tunes in it. Let's just say that even today I can't hear She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain without wincing...
    - The sad time when my cousin narrowly escaped a maniac with a flame-thrower in her school (yeah, this was crazy real for Britain! -- there were a couple of mass shootings at that time which forced the government to implement very strict gun control). We were playing Superfrog, a cartoonish 2D platformer on the Amiga and in one level the wee amphibian has a flame-thrower. My cousin insisted it was squirting orange juice and making the enermies all sticky. My sister and I understood and turned the game off so as to avoid triggering her any further.
    - Asking my dad for memory expansion for my Amiga 500 for Christmas. Catching him later loading a demo of the Elvira game where you could see her melons when she jumped, because the demo needed 1 MB of RAM to run properly.
    - Watching my mum and nattering with her in my bedroom while she played a game called Squigs (similar to Columns) on the Amiga. Loading a cracked copy of Sim City up so she could play it only to find that ratbag brother of my friend who'd copied me the disk had put porn on it instead. We switched it off immediately before she got upstairs thank goodness.
    - Gaining a whole new group of friends after looking for Gabriel Knight hints and tips on the old PC Gamer UK forums in the first few weeks of my third year at uni. By the time I graduated the following summer, I'd become utterly obsessed with Baldurs Gate, had my first ever cybersex session (this was 2000-01, so this was very much a novelty for both of us) then had real sex together a month or two later, then split up just before my finals because we weren't really on the same wavelength.
    - Starting to play WoW. It got me through a dark period of my life simply by distracting me from other issues, and years later after ditching it and coming back years later when I had both the time and money to play again, my husband, dying of cancer, asked me to get a pink ostrich like Sheldon Cooper had on his favourite TV show, Big Bang Theory. He didn't start playing at all, but at least he got to see me riding the ostrich.
    - Walking into Dublin in AC Valhalla. I love this game because I'm English (with an Irish mother) and so roaming from Hadrian's Wall to Winchester (not far from where I live now) was somethjng more special than simply pixels on a screen. But the Dublin bit was special because my first job out of uni was there and it was the time I was most like Eivor IRL -- exploring a new world for the first time as an adult, building a new life for myself and exploring to my heart's content. I literally cried :).
    - Winning my first game of Fortnite. I was hooked on Battle Royale and am even playing ranked on Apex Legends (because people play more strategically on ranked so you're not wiped the minute you hit the ground but make better decisions about positioning yourself and gearing up).
    - Learning to play with keyboard and mouse on FPS. I have very floppy wrists, so although I'd make a good badminton player, I find it really hard to get to grips with the Wiimote or anything like Valorant that requires precision aim. It sounds really counterintuitive, but controllers feel more solid and because they're slightly more weighted, they are easier to control without slipping and sliding everywhere. I'd like to get much better but I feel more comfortable using the mouse to walk around like in WoW than using it to aim an FPS gun.

    Outstanding list. Obviously a lot of other great moments that didn't make the cut, but what can you do. I would have voted for the Green Hill Zone, which was incredibly fun but also a mind-blowing tech demo, really showing off what the new Sega could do (that Nintendon't). And while it's not everyone's favorite twist, I still remember getting MGS2 on launch day and realizing I wouldn't be playing as Snake for most of the game.

    I'll never forget the first time i found myself really invested in the characters in a game. I was playing System Shock 2 and loved the little stories you'd follow in the auido recordings. You follow Delacroix for most of the game and she seems like a great character. I was devastated when Shodan betrayed her to her death.

    It's a fairly middling game, but the moment in Rage when you first open the door of your Ark and step out into the world. Seeing the moon hanging in the sky, nearly cracked in half and with chunks floating around it is a great payoff for a pretty solid opening cinematic.

And oh man did I miss her for the rest of the game.

    yeah, Breath of the Wild has so much that is just amazing, and that opening sequence sets the stage better than anything I've ever seen. However, my favorite moment of that game was finding the Lord of the Mountain for the first time. It was magical and felt sort of sacred, like I shouldn't have even been seeing it. That I didn't find any clues about it until afterwards made it more special. As if I was trying to piece together what it was I just witnessed. I can't remember ever having felt quite that much in awe from a game.
    Also, there's a great Hobbit easter egg in the first Drakan game on the PC. Fortress of goblin/frog people. Secret door, leads to a big cavern. In the middle, a lake, with a small island. Only one monster in the room (on the island) and a sword named Sting

    Need to add Ultima Online, when Lord British (literally the games creator, Richard Garriot) had his character killed with a glitch in the middle of a public ceremony. He was typically invincible, but someone exploited a glitch and stabbed the game’s king to death. Not only wasn’t it scripted, it wasn’t supposed to be possible, and hundreds of people were there watching live.
