Oh man. So Soda Drinker Pro was 100% intentionally made to be that way. It was spoofing a lot of the cheaply made sim games at the time. I've met the creator at GDC a few times (I work in the games industry) and he's a really nice and interesting guy. Almost more of a performance artist.
I was doing translation quality testing for #1. I'm proud to be in the credits for that masterpiece. My French colleague couldn't take it after a few days and showed up stoned every morning. Time of my life. 😅
Oh yeah, here we go, list time! I've watched multi-hour ranked lists before, but I've never watched one about the 101 worst games of all time. So I'm going to give this everything I've got.
I know someone who worked on Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust, and apparently the dev team were excited to create it, and asked the producers when they got to meet longtime series writer Al Lowe. "You're not." They didn't want to pay him. The dev team stopped caring about the game before it even started cause of that.
Yeah Al hasn't worked on a main title since Love for Sail except for the latest LSL1 remake. Magna Cum Laude I didn't even get past the first scene I was so annoyed by the writing. And Al was more than just longtime series writer, he was THE creator in a lot of respects of Larry despite Softporn Adventure being Chuck Benton's sole work in the interactive fiction title there's no personality to any of the characters. Having Al work on the games since 2000 may not have saved them from being flops, but it couldn't have hurt.
LSL is one of those ideas that's so terrible on its face that only one human being is ever going to be able to pull off the trick shot of making it good.

In defense of the 360 Kinect, the sensor it's self works very well. The problem is not the hardware not working, but the software Most Kinect software is poorly implemented, and thus has difficulty registering what the sensor is detecting. Avengers Battle for Earth uses the same basic controls as Fighter Within, namely posing using ambiguous silhouettes as a guide to preform special moves. But that game does actually work, usually. Some of the pose silhouettes are hard to parse.
@@jadedheartsz I had to get the "zoom" attachment that cuts the required play space in half. Otherwise it would require my TV to be positioned so that the dining area is used as the play space. I'll say it again, the problem was never the Kinect hardware not working. The detection issues plaguing the Kinect was always the software being poorly coded. Star Wars Kinect is a prime example of this. The game has spotty detection all over the place, except for the "Let's Dance" clone mode. That works just fine. Gunstringer works perfectly. Avengers: Battle for Earth (mostly) works well, with the issues being the sometimes confusing graphics for how to use attacks rather then the detection.

#40 was an unexpected surprise for me, because it was one of my first games on console, and the very first video game I could play together with my brother (we were 8 and 10 then), and I have a lot of great memories tied to it.
XIII's remake being much worse than the original is hilarious but also rather sad. Why bother making a remake that is worse? Great video! I've played a few of these and agree that they are terrible. I'm glad that I've avoided the rest of them that you have here.
I'm glad games before 1999 were ruled out for this list. If not, the list would've been full of unlicensed NES or Commodore/ZX games. I feel like older games were bad because we were still kinda unsure about what "video games" are supposed to be. Also, there was like little to no quality control at the time, and literally anyone was able to make a game and get it on store shelves. Nowadays, game releases are more regulated. So seeing a game being published by an actual publisher in major game stores or retailers can be quite a shocker. Money was invested into its release and/or promotion. It was professionally age-rated. Stuff is trademarked. The publishers were proud of what they released. And the stores are happy to sell it. It's the kind of stuff that literally makes you go "WHAT WERE THEY THEEENKEEEENG?!?!" Cuz back then, most gamedevs probably weren't thinking.
Some of these really didn't look that bad (like the BMX game), but man i'm glad to see Godai Elemental Force here! It's pretty much a classic "so bad it's good" game for me and my brothers. We used to have a demo of it for PS2, and when my bro came across it for 5 bucks he bought the damn thing because it's hilarious. Especially the sound effects! 🤣
Postal 1, 2, and 4 having poorer reviews is merely a matter of haters gonna hate. Postal 3 has an easter egg in the expansion to Postal 2 released over a decade after Postal 2 (and it's massive) where a Postal 3 developer committed suicide.
Ark Survival Evolved got a complete 180 on the Switch and it's 1000 times better than before. The reworking was done by Grove Street Games of all people. Since they were the same people who made GTA: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition, that is saying something.
Watching now, but I can say that in my critic career, I professionally reviewed three of these games: Dragonball Evolution, The Asskickers, and Thundercats. And... yeah. To say they stunk is an insult to the olfactories at the "freshest" section of the dump. Surprised I didn't see some names on here, but holy snood. Glad I don't have to play that kind of dreck for work anymore. EDIT: Just reached the Dragonball Evolution entry, and you actually sort of quoted me on the "mashing the one button and you'll win most of the time). That may have been a reference to GameRevolution, and that was me! I didn't get credited much for my contributions to the industry, so that one little throwaway on a TERRIBLE game... thanks for that! 😀
I love reading reviews of the worst games on Metacritic and this vid is basically just that. This is based on critic reviews and not user score or anyone at TJ playing it. It probably should've been called "Worst Games Ever According to Critics".
Now, to be fair, there was a real Kiss pinball machine back in the day. It was about as cool as most pinball machines back then. Which was pretty alright to insanely neat, depending on how much you got into actual pinball machines and Kiss. Could have been that they were trying to attract /that/ crowd. The PC version, however...oof. As someone who actually played the original pinball game, that "port" looks sorry AF.
I think one of the reasons for them being 1999 or after is availability of the internet. Games could talk, have opinions heard and no longer had to rely on magazines or crappy websites like Gamespot and their biased reviews, in some cases you really needed to wonder if the reviewer had even played the game. I also think gamers became more discerning consumers, I grew up with Atari, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and we had some terrible games, but were just grateful to be able to play something at home without pumping coin after coin into arcade machines. (not to mention the 8 bit PC systems were tape based, and you'd be a liar if you said back then you did not swap cassette tapes filled with games with your mates)
Yeah there's absolutely NO way that earlier games weren't worse than some of these. Christ, ET nearly killed the gaming industry! Superman 64 was also released in 1999, but it's not on the list? Whatever lol
@Canuckhardtail funny how it wouldent be on that list because they aren't the worst. Way better games than rdr 2 and the rest of the tiktok npc taste games
@@arthursnyder6935 That, and _(if I remember right)_ some smooth-brained boardroom warriors thought it a good idea to produce and market enough copies for every Atari 2600 owner to buy the game about 4 times. Not to mention it being an ugly mediocre game _(a jagged turd-colored blob against a concrete-gray background comes to mind),_ practically unplayable without the booklet.
There are two games on this list that I actually quite liked: X-Rebirth and Raven's Cry. Both launched in a horrible state, which played a large part in their low review scores. X-Rebirth is not a fan favorite in the X series of space sims, but after being patched up by the devs it isn't a bad game. It certainly helps that it can be modded, and there are quite a few fan made enhancements. Still, I don't know why anyone would play it over X3 or X4, which are both very good games. Raven's Cry got dunked on for being buggy, an rpg, and for not being politically correct. But pirate's are not PC. It is definitely not a good game, but after patching it does fall into the entertaining-bad category thanks to the silly voice acting and crude humor. Then again, the same could be said for Ride to Hell : Retribution, which has probably made back it's dev costs simply from people wanting to play it to see how bad it is. I'm not saying these games don't deserve a place on this list, since releasing a buggy game should result in a poor score, but reviewers need to apply that policy universally, rather than sometimes giving publishers like EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda something of a break because a game is highly anticipated on social media.
@1:49:00 So the Homies franchise actually started as a T Shirt line in the early 90s, with all the characters having their own shirt designs. Yes, they were a flea market brand but they were very popular (especially with young Latino males such as myself and my friends) and to this day I still have a few of my Homies shirts somewhere.
Wow. I remember playing Armorines on the N64. As a kid, I honestly liked it. It was interesting and I liked the menu music. Lol Ah, yeah, it was a lot more stable on the N64 and looked smoother to me. At least in my memory. It was hard at times, but I could beat it.

@@faerieknight2298 the Kinect had an attachment? Wow I never knew that.
I had no real issues with Star Wars Kinect or that Steel Battalion game for the most part.
holy moly. you guys have truly out done yourselves on this one. what a glorious video! wow!
Great video, appreciate all the hard work. The only thing I wished you guys did and hope you do in future videos is, please show the number of the rank the game is on and leave the number there for like 10 secs or so. don't just say the number especially if you have fans from outside of english language language. Thank you
I bought Bomberman Act Zero thinking it was a run and gun game back in 2009 but boy was I wrong! It was a futuristic version of Bomberman for PS1 and N64. The game gave me nightmares! I also bought Ninja Gaiden 2 as well.
Act Zero is SOOOO awful holy sh!t
How the heck did I forget about this channel instant re sub thanks for the epic content and having to suffer through these games for our entertainment so we don't have to
@6:28 Gutted for Hoodwinked to be on here. Back in the day I frequented the same programming boards as the (one man) developer and was very jealous of what he was creating.
Honestly, a list like this will be highly speculative. There are countless bad games in the sewers of Steam no one has heard of.
I don't like how UA-cam classed this as Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
It's says GTA III for me
Awe yeah KISS pinball, hahaha. I love me some KISS and I love me some pinball, picked it up years ago along with another that was Austin Powers themed. They were obviously very bad but I've always weirdly loved bad games. Helps appreciate the good ones out there! Great list, this was a fun listen.
Soda Drinker Pro is a certified classic
The 1999 thing is interesting because you'd expect this list to include games like Friday the 13th, Texas Chain Saw Massacre or ET.
I can't lie, 15:58 genuinely destroyed me. I was fully expecting something ironically terrible but... yeah. I need sleep.
great list triplejump. Plus to tell this i have seen or heard of only 4 of these games and have only played one of them.
If you watch their "Worst Games Ever" series you will become familiar with quite a few of them and also see Ben and Peter slowly lose their minds.
@@Banquet42 their are quite a few games of their worst games series i haven't watched. so i haven''t seen all of the stupidity and instantly they have went through with some of those games.
@@Banquet42 also just to tell you i have watched some of their games on the worst game ever series. just not all of them
Everything is post 1999 AND under 30%!? Damning statement on the modern industry.
Great video as always!!!
Reflects reality in the gaming industry doesn't it?
@@thestranger9608 Not games itself though. Audience. If audience is part of gaming industry. I mean people beyond 25 remembers games before 99 as good or better than it was plus internet society wasn't that big. Now majority of young people don't try mediocre or bad game before 99 because why? There is a plethora great games. Examples of bad games before 99. E.T (not worst game but certainly one of). Bubsy3d, mk clones.
Wonderful video! I’m assuming you’ll be doing the best 101 video games soon?
If Bayonetta, MadWorld, or Devil May Cry isn't on the list or Castlevania Symphony Of The Night, I'm gonna be disappointed, sad, and let down.
#40 was an unexpected surprise for me, because it was one of my first games on console, and the very first video game I could play together with my brother (we were 8 and 10 then), and I have a lot of great memories tied to it.
Thanks for mentioning the actual name of the game btw 👍

Thank you so much! 🤝
It's the kind of stuff that literally makes you go "WHAT WERE THEY THEEENKEEEENG?!?!"
Cuz back then, most gamedevs probably weren't thinking.
I'm amazed that Bubsy 3D didn't make the list. I was convinced it would be at the top once Ride to Hell: Retribution got 2nd place.
Bubsy 3D came out in 1996
I love reading reviews of the worst games on Metacritic and this vid is basically just that.
Imagine taking soda drinker pro as a serious game.
Look you heard their criteria too, it got the reviews.
The amount of merch Gene Simmons defacated out for KISS is beyond ridiculous.
Bonus points for using the world "whence" correctly, it's a rarity these days.
This list should be 102 worst games, Sonic 06 isn’t here
7:54 ARK got a redo on Switch and apparently it runs good now.
I remember the Aquaman game. X-Play's golden mullet award lmao
@Veladus Superman 64 was on the list, they just didn't call it that because it's not actually the game's official title.
@heavensgate2245 Fair enough. Still though...
Everytime i hear that "7th Dragon" theme yall use at the begining of these vids, it just soothes me. Such a great track
See how metal gear solid and dark souls arent on this list😎
Maybe if it was 103 worst games of all time.
@Canuckhardtail funny how it wouldent be on that list because they aren't the worst. Way better games than rdr 2 and the rest of the tiktok npc taste games

The game that single-handedly collapsed the industry for a generation.
@@FroggyMosh it's because the ET game came out in I think December 1982
@@arthursnyder6935 That, and _(if I remember right)_ some smooth-brained boardroom warriors thought it a good idea to produce and market enough copies for every Atari 2600 owner to buy the game about 4 times. Not to mention it being an ugly mediocre game _(a jagged turd-colored blob against a concrete-gray background comes to mind),_ practically unplayable without the booklet.
"You could've taken that $10 to Hooters and had a much better time."
Spoken like someone who's never eaten at Hooters.
Pulled a muscle in my back at work today, now laying in bed because the pain, but you guys have given me this this gift. Thank you.
