  • My name is Josh. Subtitles:17 languages. I understand why many of you wanted me to react to the Wacken concert. This was awesome! Floor is in the zone and the sound and stage production quality is phenomenal. They are all ultra-talented and Tuomas is a gifted songwriter. I'm learning more about their journey and I can't wait to hear more from this group. Please put your recommendations down in the comments. Thank you for watching my reactions.

Hey Josh (great name, by the way), I want to say how much I enjoy your reactions.
    The primary reasons are:
    1. Your calm, soft-spoken demeanor.
    2. Your in-depth analysis of each song.
    3. Your methodical approach.
    4. Your desire to understand all aspects of each song.
    Thank you sir.
Regarding your question on reading the lyrics or not, I would say the following:
    1. Please remember this is your channel and you should operate it as you wish (it's not a democracy, so it doesn't really matter what the majority of viewers say).
    2. Reading the lyrics is part of fully engaging with a song. In our current postmodern society, many simply want to go with the emotional aspect of the song, forgetting that we are thinking, as well as feeling, beings. The brain is to be used along with our emotions.
    3. That being said, yes sir, please keep reading and analyzing the lyrics as well. That's part of enjoying a song. It shouldn't merely be an emotional experience, but a cerebral AND emotional experience all at once.
Those are my thoughts. Your work is appreciated sir. Thank you.

Please do not change anything in your style of reaction, from documenting the reaction and analyzing the lyrics. You are very meticulous and this helps you notice all the nuances. Although it was not necessary to make this second reaction to a different version of the same song, you drew the correct conclusions.

Read the lyrics whenever you want...I don’t see why anyone would complain about that. There were 82,000 people at this Wacken 2013 show, and any of the songs from this concert are great, but I’d especially recommend Storytime, Everdream, Song of Myself, Romanticide, and I Want My Tears Back. As you explore more songs you’ll find that Marko is also a great vocalist.

During that whole concert, they were as perfect, as a band can be, live. It must have been the first perfect gig, since Floor was on board. So yes, it is a milestone. It is the moment, where the actual lineup was perfectly together, for the first time.

I think reading the lyrics before watching is a great idea. Many miss the intention of the song and the brilliance of the writer. It also allows the listener to focus on the music and not be distracted by trying to figure out the lyrics on the first listen. When most of us have heard it hundreds of times and know the words we often forget that. Keep doing what you do the way you want to do it.

I agree with reading the lyrics first. I'm a classically trained pianist, so my first impulse is to listen to the instrumentation in music. I can't process the lyrics until I'm quite familiar with the song. I suspect this is the case with many musicians as that is what our ear is trained to do.

In Buenos Aires she was still learning the songs and just trying to get through the shows. Wacken 2013 was the last show in the tour and by that time Floor was able to make some vocal additions to the song based on her vocal talents. That plus being more comfortable with the band. Also, the band is extremely tight in their playing and it shines in this show.

Read the lyrics whenever you like lol you're doing it out of good intentions by wanting to understand it beforehand. I don't see how it could be labeled as condescending, kind of an odd word to use in that context. If you started off the video by saying "i must read these lyrics first to make sure i approve of this song" then i could see it as being condescending. But you didn't, so don't worry about. Some may see it as not getting the true first take reaction i guess 🤷‍♂️ Most Nightwish videos have the lyrics in the closed captions, so that might be something to look out next round if you feel people are still complaining. Some like to read over them after. But, at the end of the day, to each their own. You're the one experiencing new music, and you're the one who gets to decide how you experience it.
Hope you keep diving into the Nightwish deep end. Stick to their live stuff, unless it's from their new album, as nothing live has been filmed yet for it. Nightwish has posted it in full with lyric videos and one music video for the single.

OK, I am going to guess that you might be more interested in Floor's singing versus Nightwish as a band. Therefore I recommend you jump right into the Beste Zangers performances. She sings in German, Dutch, Spanish and English in different performances on that show (a Dutch one, so look into version where there are subtitles, and even before/after commentary.) The finale with her and Henk Poort doing The Phantom of the Opera as the rain was trying to tear down the set was unbelievable!
Then return to her with Nightwish. Storytime is a rocking one (also from Wachen). I Want My Tears Back, from Buenos Aires is a Celtic feeling and very fun song, where you will see another member of the band, Troy, who does wind instruments. LOTS of options! :)

Great analysis. One big reason that Floor's performance is a cut above here is that by this time she'd had time to really digest this song and finesse her vocal interpretation. If you listen to this performance side by side with 2012 in Buenos Aires you'll notice that she makes use of a much greater variety of timbres to convey the story and emotions of the song. Actually, her interpretations of songs always evolves over time, and her approach to this song has some additional changes today compared to 2013.
I'd like to make a couple of suggestions that show off particular aspects of her singing rather than just based on fan popularity:
    1) Dead Boy's Poem - Live in Buenos AIres 2018.
This performance really shows one of the skills that Floor's worked to develop over the years of being able to almost continuously modify her vocal placement in terms of weight, cord closure, resonance, timbre and pitch word to word and beat to beat to be able to seamlessly transition between different dynamic levels and tone qualities without the clear breaks between sections like you hear in this performance. It's a really unique skillset that she's developed.
    2) Floor Jansen & Henk Poort - Phantom of the Opera
This performance is notable for a few things. First is that her interpretation works to add a bunch of dynamic range to Christine's part that isn't in the original arrangement. She does this by starting the first section higher and lighter than normal, and progressively adding weight over the course of the song. She also goes up in volume as she goes up in pitch in the climax, adding progressively more twang as she ascends and even adding harsh onsets to make Christine sound crazier and crazier in the climax.
    3) Yours is an Empty Hope - Wembley 2015
Want to hear Floor do a black metal style growl? Because you will if you watch this one.

New Subscriber...and I appreciate all the information on the mechanics of Floor's abilities. I relate it to watching football on TV, explaining the plays and how the player's react to execute a certain play. My wife is sometimes amazed that I can just look at the way a team sets up before a play and tell her what the quarterback is seeing in the way the defense has set itself up, and how he intends to counter their setup. It all happens extremely fast and every player has to perform their job for the play to be successful. Not only are you sore and very tired at the end of a game, but you're mentally exhausted.
I cannot imagine how tired they are after a concert, because from what I have heard their concerts are around 2 hours long.

82000+ fans at Wacken 2013. Go for the lyrics. I totally agree with you. Tuomas' lyrical content is one of the unique and special aspects of Nightwish songs. Tuomas has stated that many of his songs he would rather not explain the meaning of the lyrics. he loves poetry and feels great poetry can mean many different things to each person. I find lyrical meaning very interesting. Don't worry about pausing. We want to hear what you have to say about the performance. Some fans don't really understand what a reaction video is all about. Tuomas loves movie score and also loves to use extreme dynamics in his compositions. This musical interlude is kind of unique for a Nightwish song. However can we agree it is kind of like the calm before the storm? Tuomas write 95% of all of Nightwish' music and lyrics. He also composes the orchestration with some help from Pip Williams and some orchestra directors. The drummer plays to a click track in his ear monitors and keeps everybody in sync with the backing track. Loved your analysis of this wonderful composition. Floor first started singing professionally at age 16. Floor attended the Rock Academy in The Netherlands. She also had operatic training as well as some musical theater training. The high section at the end is not part of the original recording of this song. This part was added by Floor to make it her own. It was originally sung by Tarja the 1st vocalist for Nightwish. I love Floor, but since you are a singer you should check out songs from Tarja as well. She is even more of an operatic vocalist. be well. Peace.

Symphonic elements of songs pre-recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London's The Metro Voices choir group and the London Young Musicians Children's Choir. Tuomas writes the music for the orchestra and choir and then Pip Williams of the London college of music arranges it. Tuomas sometimes wants more than the instruments are capable of giving.
Tuomas has said. The way it works in NIGHTWISH is that I am very much a solo worker. So I try to make all the songs - even the arrangements - as ready as possible, as much as I feel that I have to give to the songs. Most of the riffs, even some drum fills and stuff like this. I just try to make it as good as I can do it by myself. And then I introduce the songs and demos that I've done on my own to the other members of the band, and then we start the rearranging process. You know, 'Could you come up with a better riff for this one?' 'Would the bass line be different in that one?' 'What about if the vocal line is like this?' And sometimes the songs change a lot

Floor was not a full-time member of the band in this particular Wacken Open Air 2013 concert. Floor and Troy both were not asked to be full-time members of the band until a couple of months later. The specific dates were that the Wacken Open Air concert was filmed in Germany on August 3, 2013. Floor and Troy were announced to be full-time members of the group on October 9, 2013. The announcement came out shortly before the Showtime, Storytime DVD/Bluray was released in November of 2013. Floor in fact tells the story in an interview that both she and Troy both were teary eyed when the guys in the band asked them to both be full-time members. Troy had been a guest for Nightwish in such Videos as THE ISLANDER from the Dark Passion Play album which featured the singing of the bass player Marko Hietala. Tuomas the keyboard player and leader of the group knew Floor Jansen from earlier in her career when she was Singer for a Symphonic Metal Band called AFTER FOREVER shortly after Nightwish released its first album back in 1996. When Nightwish parted ways with their second lead singer Anette Olzon, Floor had been on the top of Tuomas list for a possible replacement, so when they needed a singer while in the middle of a world tour for the Imaginearum Album, he called Floor and asked her if she could learn the entire set in 48 hours and then fill in for the remainder of the tour. At the end of that tour, she and Troy both became full-time members of Nightwish, and the rest, as they say, is history.

I'd say it was most definitely decided upon that Floor would be a permanent member, for the sole reason that they decided to make a DVD out of this concert. They would only do that with the full-time singer, yes? Seems like bad business to invest heavily in production and try and sell a DVD with a fill-in singer.

Josh - it's always heartening to see the look of professional respect Floor elicits. It was written all over your face. Of course it isn't necessary to validate my enjoyment of her work, but it's nice to see newcomers entranced by her unique talent - and that includes her stagecraft. If we lived in a fair world - you know what the music promotion industry is like - Floor and her friends would be given the acclaim outside of the tight-knit Metal community that they so richly deserve. That version was a "Lightning in a Bottle" moment. Thank you for being open to discovery.

However, Buenos Aires has this moment when the camera catches Emppu's face when Floor hits the final note. From that moment, Emppu became Floor's little knight and praises her everytime they play this song.

Because of your Classical training... you should look Nightwish Phantom of opera with Tarja Turunen. To hear the original sound of the band.
But poet and pendulum and createst show on earth belong to the same gategory of songs with Many parts. If that is more you Are looking for.
They Also have Many nice folk song type of songs. Try for example Islander from Tampere live or Harwest from their new album for that sound. They Also have heavier songs to those who like more headbanging...
    Very diverse band!

I love spending some time on the lyrics, especially with Nightwish‘s songs. Those are not easy to follow and always worth it.
Pausing is good as well if you having something to say. It is your reaction! Some recommend to repeat the part of the song you interrupted.
The performance was at Wacken festival with a 82k crowd.
The interlude for me represents the phasis of a relationship where things are just fine for both parts and you don‘t talk a lot about it. But i guess Thuomas has some deeper meaning in it.
Just as a recommendation. Wacken is really the concert to start with. Wembley 2015 has almost the same quality and Tampere is for „The Islander“ and „Greatest show on earth“ (if you re familiar with Richard Dawkins I d recommend the Wembley version tho) best choice

About that instrumental part in the middle, i think that acts as a nice way to separate two ways of thinking within the song. Before that part the lyrics seem to be more sad and longing, but after that they're more desperate or destructive (also where they introduce more themes into the structure). In the first it's written about the past tense, the second is like it's being sung directly to the 'ghost love'. The first half being sad for the loss of love, the instrumental acting as this calm before the storm, almost an acceptance, and the last half being more consumed by the loss, the sense of giving up, pleading to have it back and relive it at any cost "take me, cure me, kill me, bring me home". - That's how i like to think of it anyway.

I think it lets you think about why there is more power or why something is being sung with more emotion also lets you concentrate on the technical aspects of what is going on instead of having to zone in on every single word that's being sung. That's my two cents, great reaction!

Great reaction, and going through the lyrics beforehand is a great and refreshing idea.
In fact, Floor wasn't actually announced as the permanent female lead vocalist until about 8 weeks after this concert, although the offer was apparently made and accepted a few weeks earlier, following the festival performance at Tampere, Finland, in the hotel bar. There was some kind of contractual reason it had to be kept under wraps until after the tour was complete, although I have no idea what that may have been.
It was already pretty obvious that Nightwish would have been crazy to have let her go though, and had been for months.
It was actually Floor herself who re-wrote the ending of this song and got it included in the setlist - it was not in the show as originally performed on this tour. Going through lyrics beforehand will stand you in good stead in some of the more recent concerts, and in particular, researching the backstory for a few of the longer songs, and one from their most recent album Human II Nature, called "Shoemaker", which although not epic in length, is certainly so in background story and execution.
I believe Floor is unmatched in versatility as a female vocalist, and feel lucky to be alive at a time when I can listen to her performances, and just maybe got to one live - although the wheely section is usually poorly placed to get the best experience. I honestly believe that such a combination of talent, work ethics, commitment and good luck arises maybe once in a century, and we are lucky enough to be here to hear and see it. And yes, she is singing well within her capability in this song.
btw, I used to be a reasonable choral singer - up to a standard recorded by the BBC for national broadcast, but there aren't many solos for a basso profundo, and in fact I was only ever comfortable in male voice choirs, as mixed voice have a tendency to combine basses and baritones, which forces me to either shut up or drop an octave. That was many years ago, and I no longer have either the tonal quality or breath control I once had, so now I'm limited to humming an improvised bass part to songs I enjoy.

Yes, all orchestral and choir parts are written by Tuomas and prerecorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the City of London Choir at Angel Studios, London, under his direction. Tuomas is the composer of everything you hear in every song including vocals, with minimal contributions from Marko- Bass/Vocals (2001- current).
Safe to say, Tuomas IS Nightwish.
    Jukka- Drums (96-15)
    Emppu- Guitar (96-current)
Troy- Guitar/Vocals/All Winds and Pipes (12-current)
Floor- 6 foot 1, Dutch Goddess of all things vocal.
She was a fill in vocalist as a favor to Tuomas from 10/01/12 to 8/03/13 because their singer, Anette, quit mid tour. Her chemistry with the band and the way the fans embraced her as an artist and with such love was extremely unexpected. That alone gave her new confidence in herself and new life as she was recovering from burnout when she received the phone call. 10 months later, you have this.... a perfect fit for an absolutely awesome band!!
The Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany is the biggest venue for metal and hard rock in the world and this concert was recorded for a DVD, so the production was absolutely huge! The "stag" on the upper left corner is their logo.
Here's a short list of the more popular songs that will be requested...
    Romanticide
    Storytime
    Last Ride Of The Day
    Ghost River
    Ever Dream
I Wish I Had An Angel
    Song of Myself
In order of most to least requested, I suggest.
Thank you for the video, reaction and comments. Stay safe and stay blessed. 😊❤🤘🤘

Floor is Awesome and she really is down to earth. I think she is both Beauty and the Beast when she's performing. The guys are awesome and they are her brothers. I think you should do Floor and Marco singing Ave Maria. If you want to hear Marco sing there is High Hopes a Pink Floyd cover. The Islander, Kiss while my lips are still red. Beste Zangers 2019 is a TV show about 7 singers from the Netherlands. They each sing to each other from the persons albums or just family songs. Floor is on it and it shows off her versatility. You slso have to remember that the year before she was invited to sing she was having a burnout. She has 2 yrs opera. Her breathe control is amazing and so is her stage presence. Floor does some growls in a couple of songs from Revamp and Nightwish. Philharmonic orchestra recording instead of the actual orchestra. She started at 16 with After Forever and she is 39 right now. Her tats are Amazing and so are her outfits in other videos.

Floor hadn't been officially announced as the full time replacement at that point in time (Wacken, 3rd August 2013).
Reading between the lines in interviews, Floor and Troy were asked to become full time members after the 'Sauna Open Air 2013' concert on June 8th 2013 and accepted. However they were asked to 'keep it quiet' until Christmas Holidays 2013, announcement was pushed forward to early October 2013 around the time 'Showtime, Storytime' (Wacken 2013) was announced as coming on DVD/Bluray.
Floor and Nightwish pulled off what many bands would find challenging / near impossible, changing singer with 48 hours notice on October 1st 2012.
Pip Williams supervised the orchestra parts and orchestra arrangements - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pip_Williams
Tuomas Holopainen (Nightwish founder, keyboardist) composed all music and wrote the lyrics
London Philharmonic Orchestra performed the orchestral parts, conductor James Shearman

Tuomas is a big fan of film scores, and that middle section is his typical way of getting into big orchestral sections. I recall that it was quite novel when they released this album (Once, 2004), but he has developed this compositional habit on subsequent albums.

You could call it a "dead" love or a lost love, but more accurately it is a "ghost love" in the sense that the romance never really existed. It was one-sided. And the writer's infatuation / obsession is with a "ghost," a fiction, a phantasm of his imagination rather than the real person (who is very much alive and well but just isn't interested).

Chris, that is exactly how I have always interpreted the lyrics. My viewpoint may be colored by having been the victim of just such an obsessive relationship back in my grad school days. I posted a similar view on a different site a few weeks back and received a massive counter argument from some bozo who tried to lay out a point by point theory to prove me wrong. The guy sounded like he had just taken a freshman logic course. His argument was specious at best and laughable at worst. His entire theory was based on the assumption that the speaker was normal, sane and rational-that they were speaking true truth (as opposed to personal truth). He never considered that the speaker could be irrational--compulsive, obsessive and delusional, not speaking truth at all. Is our view the correct one? The only things I know for certain are that (A) without corroboration from another source we will never know for sure and (B) that douchebag had way too much time on his hands.
