Hey, I am 72 years old, never liked metal and Nightwish is now MY favorite band. They are all amazingly talented but Floor is in a class of her own. She is by any standard one of the best female vocalists out there today and absolutely the most versatile. Six years of formal voice training including classical and a bit of opera but her love is metal. That being said I have heard her sing two arias and absolutely kill both of them. And she can shine in any genre.

71 year old here - grew up during Golden Age of Rock listening to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Stones, Beatles, Yes, The Who, and on and on. Nightwish is the first band in a very long time that I would put up there with the others!
70 year old here and I can't even begin to believe that I never even heard of this band until about a month ago. Since then I have been binge watching every thing I can find about them. I even bought a NightWish t-shirt! They are absolutely amazing, the best I have ever heard.

Yes, Floor Jansen is classically trained. There are so many epic songs that will take you on a journey while listening to their music. You can also check out her rendition of the song "Phantom of the Opera" with a male opera singer...with the music redone in Nightwish fashion! I also love "The Greatest Show on Earth"...all 20 minutes of it. You can just look up their videos and choose a song...I have yet to hear one that isn't epic!
I can listen to "Ghost Love Score" over and over again....and I get goosebumps, and have what the Nightwish Army calls, "A Floorgasm!". Yes....that out of body experience listening to Floor Jansen's voice!
Oh...I am 63 years old...a hard rock/heavy metal enthusiast from when I was 8 years old, listening to Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Steppenwolf, Black Sabbath ( With Ozzy ),Nazareth, Grand Funk Railroad, Boston, Foreigner, The Scorpions, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Dokken, of course Metallica. I also enjoy Daughtry, and a few other new heavy metal groups including Disturbed. Nightwish is in their own category all by themselves.

Yessir that is correct, you have felt the feels that Tuomas sent to you through his music
Hythix Well Tuomas AND Floor with her power vocals and Valyrie outfit. This song is not remotely the same without Floor. And the spine shiffering vocals at the end were all written by Floor. Originally there were no vocals at the end at all. It was only when Floor started singing this song that it became sort of THE Nightwish 'anthem'.
Two different 'Phantom of the Opera's " associated with Nightwish, one is with the original singer Tarja and Bassist Marco. , (Floor Jansen - is the current singer). Floor does a duet with Henk Poort (who played the Netherlands Phantom) from the show "Beste Zangers, 2019". THAT is one series you'll want to check out down the road. 7 episodes - Floor sings Opera, Ballads, Pop, Salsa in Dutch, German, Spanish and English. Each one more incredible than the first. My vote for greatest singer in the world. In the meantime, you've got about 100+ Nightwish songs to go, (Storytime from the same Wacken Festival a good for next cue). While you're right, I'm gonna technically one up you and say that there are 3 different Phantom of the Opera tracks associated with Nightwish: Two are with Tarja and Marco, while one is from Floor and Henk on Beste Zangers. Everyone always assumes that the live performance of Phantom that Nightwish did is the only one, but forgets that there's the studio track of it that came out on the album Century Child, back in 2002. In fact, it is that track and the arrangement on that track that Floor and Henk used in Beste Zangers.

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing in 2013 at Wacken Open Air festival, in front of a 82k+ audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
You absorbed literally the entire show: the high level musicianship of the band, the complex composition, the mesmerizing vocals, the energy of the crowd. That was a joyful reaction, you have the potential to become fans of the band in no time.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Floor Jansen has some classic opera training but she has said that she is not opera singer. She is voice nerd and like to know how different voices are made. She use operatic voice only when song needs it.
But her husband, the drummer of Sabaton, says my wife is an opera singer, I do not know if he is joking about that or not. Sabaton for sure is no opera.
She always liked to sing very high and was trained by a teacher from conservatorium and theater on that opera singing.

Re Phantom of the Opera, Floor was on a Dutch TV show called Beste Zangers last year. It's not a competition as such, just singers from different genres doing each other's songs. Floor Jansen is the 3rd,current & final singer for NW ,she was asked in 2012 while still with her previous band ReVamp to abruptly step in & finish the tour due to the previous singer being let go,at the point of this Wacken show she had only been with the band for about 10months or less,every song she sings for this epic 82,000 in attendance was not written for her but every song in my & most opinion is better than the original. NW is a rare band in that they are best LIVE. NW is symphonic Metal ,backing orchestral are from the London Philharmonic mostly all music written & composed by the keyboardest Tuomas .Floor has also done some incredible performances on the Dutch tv show Beste Zangers 2019 : on YT : Phantom of The Opera w/Henk Poort,Vil;ja Lied, the best version of Shallow & much more,the shows format : some top Dutch singers get together and sing eachothers songs but reinterpreted or songs that hold meaning to one of the artists there.

She is our 6'1" Valkyrie vocal goddess and she commended this stage before 82k+ rabid fans holding them in the palm of her hand. This was the 13th song of a 15 song set as they headlined the Waken Open Air Metal Festival in 2013. She had only been with the band for 10 months. They are the tightest metal band on the planet, and welcome to their community. We just subscribed so that we could join you on your NW journey. Loved your reactions and looking forward to more soon. Pick any song you wish from this concert and you won't be disappointed. Heavy "Romanticide", catchy "Storytime", milder "Amaranth", each song from their songbook of over 120 is unique. Another thing to note is that the Keyboardist, Tuomas, composes almost all the songs and works with several Orchestras (London Philharmonic Orchestra) to create the symphony back tracks used in some of their songs since they could not bring the entire symphony on tour. The orchestra and chorus you hear and will hear in many more songs to come are REAL. Also, their live performances are better than most studio songs out there, there's nothing like this symphonic metal band. In my opinion, they are the only band that can play on stage with a smile on their faces and can bring such emotion to each of their songs. I've heard may of their songs over and over and Floor's singing always grabs you and takes you on their rollercoaster journey. In an interview, Floor said she's an empath and feels the emotions of every song, maybe that's why I get so teary eyed when she sings some of those epic pieces...Keep up the great reactions and please continue this musical journey.

One thing I don't believe I've seen mentioned anywhere is that the central orchestral interlude of this song is what I call their 'Bohemian Rhapsody' moment. When Queen performed Bohemiam Rhapsody live there was no chance they could reproduce the middle operatic act in a live environment, so they didn't bother trying - they simply disappeared offstage while the backing track played that section. This is the same, and it wouldnt' surprise me to hear that they had decided if it was good enough for Queen then it was good enough for them.

This was back in 2012 ,nobody had ever heard of Floor Jansen in the Netherlands and certainly didn't expect her to be a singer of a metal band. Look at the faces of the people when they see Floor Jansen being announced. Its funny.
Only in 2019 Floor Jansen became known in the Netherlands through a widely viewed TV program called "Beste Zangers". because metal is not played on the radio here.
I love Floor, she's truly out of this world. I think it's fair adding Tarja's performance as well, since Ginger loves Opera I'm sure she will enjoy it and get to know the first Nightwish singer:

Welcome to Floor Jansen, the 6' Valkyrie Goddess of Metal. You've heard about 40% of what she can do. I've heard her sing rock, metal, classical aria, country, lullaby, smooth jazz, pop and musical. I've heard her sing in English, Dutch, German, Finnish, Spanish, Italian and Latin. I've heard her do deathgrowls and hold a D6 for 8 seconds. And I've heard her do all those things live on stage. Sure, there are singers who can do any of the things she does better than her, but there's only one who can do all of them and sound great and convincing doing it all.
She has wonderful performances of Vilja Lied and O Mio Babbino Caro on youtube, just look for Floor Jansen. Also try Nightwish - Shoemaker for some of her operatic qualities.

You just experienced your 1st Floorgasm... If you want to hear just how versatile Floor a/k/a the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal is catch the Beste Zangers songs from that Dutch TV show. She sang different genres in different languages and each was an emotional explosion. The Phantom of the Opera will likely get you going so start there but all the songs are awesome. Nightwish is a LIVE band and you experience them especially with Floor so whatever else you do, do it LIVE (this Wacken 2013 is one of the best concerts they gave and has the best audio or you could do Wembley Arena, Tampere (Finland) or Beunes Aires(Argentina) they are all exceptional. Love the reaction and this was just a taste of what power, range and stage presence Floor has in front of these world class musicians.

I'm a 66 yr old man, Nightwish first started showing up in my youtube recommendations last Dec. watched this performance had many Floorgasms with tears streaming down my face. I am hooked.
Only dates in North America in the revised 2021 tour are Oct 1&2 in LA, Oct 5 in NYC and Oct 7 near boston Ma. As I live 20 min away from that venue (UMass Lowell) wife and I have tickets. Cannot wait to be blown away and empty my tear ducts

That's Jukka Nevalainen, and yes if there's one thing he could do, he could beat those drums like they insulted his mother! Unfortunately Jukka had to step aside in 2014 due to issues with chronic insomnia. In 2019 he announced that he was officially retiring but will continue to help with band management. His replacement is Kai Hahto, who is also the drummer for Finnish metal band Wintersun.
Think of Nightwish as the band where Metallica, Iron Maiden and Pantera meet Hans Zimmer, John Williams and Richard Wagner. Its an all star cast whose keyboard player is one of the greatest composers of our time. They can be epic, delicate, brutal and everything in btw.

This is the rabbit hole you need to go down. As for Phantom of the Opera, there is the Nightwish version with their old singer, and there is one with Floor and the original Dutch Phantom on the TV show Beste Zangers doing the Nightwish arrangement of Phantom.
Funny how you mentioned Valkyrie Mike. many fans refer to Floor as our Valkyrie warrior queen. Coming to chose us all to go to Valhalla. You guessed it my lovely lady. Floor has attended the Rock Academy in The Netherlands, and has also had operatic training as well as musical theater training. Nightwish' first vocalist was very operatic and they did a version of The Phantom live in 2005. Check out "End of an Era". You will hear how Tarja performed The Phantom. Floor's Wiki Bio
Floor Jansen started studying music at the Dutch Rock Academy in 1999, entering the Conservatorium Tilburg three years later. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. After After Forever split up she started teaching performing in her own course called Wanna be a Star?!
She used to play the guitar, piano and flute and has completed several years of music studies.
From the age of 16 all during this period she was fronting the the Band Apocalypse (later known as After Forever) in 1997 until they disbanded in 2009. She then did vocal coaching and formed her own band called Revamp which officially broke up in 2016 because of Floor's commitment to Nightwish.
The RockAcademy in the Netherlands is an actual Bachelors degree, conservatory style, but focusing on the rock/pop industry

Tuomas Holopainen - the keyboard player and metalmozart - wrote this song for their album "Once" and for the original operatic singer Tarja Turunen already in 2004. This is maybe the most powerful live of this performance and the ending has been modded from the album version which is actually nice addition. Many people consider this to be not only the best NW song but song in the universe. Check also the concert : End on an Era where is also the best version of "Phantom of the Opera".
I don't know how many times I have seen this and my eyes still tear up, but what is great is that they have even better songs than this🤘🏻🤘🏻.

And each song has its own story. Floor Jansen started studying music at the Dutch Rock Academy in 1999, entering the Conservatorium Tilburg three years later. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera.

Great reaction to Nightwish by the way. Ginger was introduced to Floorgasm faster than anyone else. Our metal Goddess are awesome isn't she? Our Valkyrie Floor has had opera training and she is a voice coach. That's Jukka Nevalainen kicking ass on those drums!!! Nice Floorgasms! People say it's a Nightwish rabbit-hole you will fall into... they are right BUT there are weasels! See Nightwish "The Islander" at Tampere (with subtitles! and lyrics) for the explanation.... Also, her BFF is named Simone Simons (she's a ginger!) and sings with the band Epica... Floor and Simone perform "Sancta Terra" and "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" together in Epica's Retrospect gig - both are well worth a reaction.

I am amazed at how MANY "Reaction" type videos are out there for Nightwish; and I'm the putz who had never heard of them before! I just saw the Phantom of the Opera video and got chills! LOL
This is one of the best ever performances of all time, the band sound incredible, and Floor as always is sublime. Thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. To get the full experience of the band, and some contrast, I would suggest checking The Siren, with original singer Tarja, and for balance checking Slow, Love Slow with second singer Anett, you see some real versatility. Mike definitely needs a Viking helmet.

Ok, I'll start by saying that Floor Jansen is the 6 foot 1, Dutch Goddess of all things vocal.
She is an opera soprano, studied and coaches opera and is a vocal coach. Her influence is Henk Poort which she had the honor of performing Phantom of the Opera duet with as he is a professional opera singer and played the Dutch version of the Phantom for many years. The performance was from a TV show in the Netherlands called Beste Zangers and they performed it as the show's grand finale in the last episode in December 2019.
The band is from Finland with the exception of Floor and multi instrumentalist Troy Donockley (UK) which became official members of the band on October 9th 2013.
Tuomas is the keyboard player, founded the band, and composes everything you hear including all orchestral and choir parts which are prerecorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the City of London Choir in Angel Studios in London under his direction.

The band started out as a 5 piece which included singer Tarja and bass player, Sami, but not Troy.
Sami was replaced by Marko in 2001, Tarja left the band in 2005 and was replaced by Anette in 2007 who left on September 29, 2012 and was replaced by Floor for the remainder of the tour. She had only 48 hours to learn the set before her first performance in Seattle, Washington on October 1st.
Jukka was forced to step down as the Drummer in 2015 because of health problems due to insomnia. His friend Kai took over drumming duties until he became permanent in 2019 when Jukka announced he was not returning to the band but will remain behind the scenes taking care of other duties.

Welcome to Nightwish and Floor Jansen! Floor is just one of the greatest vocal talents of our time, but that shouldn't overlook the absolute mastery of this band. Tuomas Holopainen, keyboard player and primary composer is a musical genius in his own right. Ghost Love Score was the best introduction, because it shows off so much of Floor's talent. As follow ups, I would STRONGLY recommend 'The Greatest Show on Earth'. 'Nemo' is their biggest hit, but artistically, Greatest Show is a masterpiece!

I don't know if you know Floor's back story with Nightwish. In 2012 on their US leg of their "Imaginarium" tour, there were tensions between the band mambers and their singer Anette, and some unforgiveable things were done by her that could not be overlooked and in Denver she got sick and could not perform, and wanted the band to cancel the show and the band did not want to, so they recruited the back up singers from their support band Kamelot to do the show( one of them had auditioned for Nightwish in 2006 when their first singer left the band, but that is sory unto itself) they did the show, and Anette went ballistic, taking to twitter and some things were said by her, so the next show in Salt Lake City was her last. The band got on the phone and contacted Floor Jansen in Holland(she was at her sister's wedding) and asked her "Learn the setlist in 48 hours"(There is a dicumentary of it) she met them in Seattle and with only an extended sound check with the band she went on the stage and blew the roof off and the rest is history. This is from 10 months later at Wacken Open air festival and this song is #13 of a 15 song set list.

Marco is playing the bass and doing also the vocals. He is very versatile and an awesome singer as well. You might watch „The Islander“ from Tampere to experience this.
Emppu is playing the guitar. He can shred it but he always does exactly that much, that is required by the song.
Kai (also Wintersun) is now at the drums and replaced the original drummer Jukka (whom you saw here) who had stop playing the drums due to health issues. But he still is with the band. Julka was a perfect drummer and showman, Kai is a perfect drummer and a machine and beast at the drums.
Then there is Troy, a multi instrumentalist from England who in older performances supported the band at some tracks but became luckily a full member of the band after this tour. He‘s a great singer as well.
Last but not least there is Floor, the Dutch singer. She is the bands third singer after Tarja (operatic) and Annett from Sweden (pop/rock). She can sing really everything from opera over pop/ rock to growls
This gig was at Wacken. Wacken is THE metal festival worldwide. Nightwish were one of the headliners in 2013.
It is in the north of Germany in a rural area. Therefore the bullhead with flames is the Wacken symbol. There are more than 80.000 metalheads having a big party each year.
Here are some suggestions for your next stops:
-> There are only great songs from Wacken: „Story Time“ and "Ever Dream" are catchy in a very positive way. "Song of Myself" starts catchy and ends with everyone headbanging. "Romanticide", "Last Ride of the Day" and "Ghostriver" are the heavier ones.
-> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast: Maximum speed and Marco (the singing bass player) becomes Hannibal Lecter ;-)
-> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look!! at the growls. You'll be surprised.)
-> „Dead Boys Poem“ from Buenos Aires (so amazing and emotional)

From the new album there are for obvious reasons no live sessions so far. For all songs there are lyric videos, except for „Noise". But maybe you'll give some songs a try as well. It's an awesome album. Definitely not an "easy" one with a lot of really unique songs, different from what is "typical" for Nightwish. Floor said that she was really challenged to sing the songs that Tuomas wrote for her. Knowing her abilities, you can imagine that they are "special“. It‘s a good idea to hear the album in the given order, but nevertheless here are some of my options to some of the songs.
-->"Noise" is probably the most "typical" song and the only one with "real video". The video is great as the song itself
--> "Tribal" is the heaviest one and Kai, the drummer, had to change his normal setup to be able to play it.
--> "Shoemaker" (about Eugene Shoemaker) is such a heavenly and epic song with the possible epic ending.
-> „Pan“ is just an amazing ride. When it starts you for a moment think you‘re listening to Floors husbands band „Sabaton“. In the song you‘ll be reminded to „Tribal“ and „Noise“.
-> Procession“ a rather calm song with so amazing vocals by Floor
--> "Harvest" is so different with Troy singing, that you will wonder if you're listening to Nightwish.
-> „Endlessness“ is Marcos song and shows his great voice.
--> "Music", „How's the Heart", ... are really cool songs as well. Of course.
The album challenged Floor as singer, which is not easy to do, as she is one of the best and most versatile singers in the world.

Beste Zangers Just in case (which I can really recommend) you're going to do "Beste Zangers" make sure you take the clips posted by "jenniezelf" on UA-cam as she has also included the talking / interviews before and after with english subtitles. The concept of the show is, that on one day all singers sing a song for one of them.
It's a song that is by that singer or a song that means a lot for him / her. So it is very interesting to get to know the story behind each song. And it will help to understand the reactions of the other singers. Floor is singing there in German, Dutch, Spanis and English. Her "Phanom of the Opera" duet with Henk Poort is legendary.

* Backstory for „Poet and the Pendulum“
Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time.
As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his the vocals turned off in his in ears.

Singer of epica (simone) and singer of nightwish (floor). Both are proficient in opera, classical, pop and metal techniques. The style of these two groups (epica & nightwish) is symphonic metal. This style uses a combination of symphonic, opera and metal elements. And it is interesting to know that these two groups work very well together and even have a common song with each other, and the fans of both groups strongly support each other.
Not much moves me to go see live music anymore but I wouldn't hesitate to see Nightwish. That was some gorgeous magic. Absolutely epic.

I suggest you react to Nightwish "The Phantom of the Opera!" It's an old one from 2005, live in Helsinki Finland, with the original female lead vocalist of Nightwish Tarja Turunen, and the bassist Marko Hietala doing the vocals. I would describe the performance wild, and I love it. They make it heavier, their own.
Tarjas style is even more operatic than Floor's. Tarja's outfits are always beautiful. I believe you're going to love her, when you hear and see her.
What ever song, live performace by Nightwish you choose to react to is OK with me, because they are all good and to my liking. Wacken 2013, Wembley Arena 2015, Tampere 2015, Buenos Aires 2018 are the best live concert recordings with Floor, the 3rd and current female lead vocalists of Nightwish. The Helsinki 2005 concert with Tarja is a good one too.

Poet And The Pendulum is an expert-level reaction. It requires (yes, REQUIRES) background info first. There's plenty of concrete evidence to back this up, and don't give the trite excuse of "wanting to see their 'genuine' reaction." 99 out of 100 reactors fail to grasp the context of the song without prior info, and many express regret for going in cold.

Poet is not a normal song, and cannot be treated as such in a reaction. And I'm tired of going through this with idiots who can't grasp that.
It is not a feel-good song like the majority of their library. It deals with depression and suicide. It presents an entirely different sort of gravitas that tons of reactors miss on cold reactions. We've seen it time and time again - reactors giggling or laughing at what is happening onstage, out of context with the content presented, and being utterly confused at the obituary and suicide scene, because they completely misunderstand what is happening.
Poet And The Pendulum is not a 'song,' but a performance.
No, PATP is a horrible choice for 2nd song, you will not connect with the song and you will miss so much of the emotional part and the story. There are far better ones for that are not so deep that do not require that research and understanding of what the song is all about.
Keep doing those Wachen live songs, every single one in that concert is awesome.
