In the beginning that was Troy playing guitar using an E Bow then he was playing the Uilleann pipes there Irish they get there air through a bellows under the right elbow that he pumps up while playing and goes to a holding bag under his other elbow, also The drummer Jukka left in 2014 because of medical issue but remains in management and his friend Kai Hahto took over.

This is a Mammoth of a song. The whole Evolution in one song. No other than Nightwish can (or want) do this. As a patriotic Finn l find the Tampere version a little more epic one (if possible). 😎👍 (And by the way, it's Troy playing the guitar with the E-bow device in the beginnig and Kai Hahto on the drums then). But no worries, excellent reaction.

Gaia is the mother goddess (earth)…
Every line seems to have an interesting meaning, two of my favorites:
      “The cosmic law of gravity
Pulled the newborns around a fire”
The fire being the sun and the newborns are the planets🤓
“Lonely farer in the Goldilocks zone, She has a tale to tell”
The Goldilocks zone is the area round a star where the circumstances make life possible (water), the lonely farer is earth.
In Stargazers, one of his very early compositions, he calls earth “tragédienne of heaven”, because she is the place of that biggest of tragedies: evolution.

Troy plays the Uillean pipes, the Irish bagpipes, also known as elbow pipes. He inflates the bellow under his right arm with his elbow, an expels with with left elbow forcing air through the pipes. He was one playing guitar with an eBow at the beginning. He does not do this in the Tampere version, but instead uses a low whistle. Kai Hahto was on drums here in 2015. Gaea does come from the name of the Greek goddess, but essentially is a word for “Mother Earth”. Their concerts are epic and amazing, whether at a huge festival or a small club venue. They are masterful. Tuomas is an amazing lyricist, and almost all in his second language. Keep exploring Nightwish. WE WERE HERE!

Hey, Josh, here is the complete Tampere 2015 version with lyrics. ua-cam.com/video/bl6lUfIMkGM/v-deo.html Floor looks even more amazing in a dress that should represent a DNA and with a haunting makeup. :) Also her parents were in the audience, so it was a special experience for her to sing in front of them. Troy´s e-bow at the beginning is replaced by the recorded chello - sounds fantastic, very different, but so fitting. BTW, the sound is mixed a bit better in Tampere version in many people´s view. And then there is that one extra element: the fireworks. Watch until the very end for some more fireworks, too. :) Also, you should listen to this song for a few times, because there are some Easter eggs towards the end, where you can hear practically the evolution of music from throat singing through Bach to Metallica´s riff from Enter Sandman. Enjoy!

Hi Josh. Seeing 12,500 metal-heads go silent to listen to Dawkins is stunning. Just for yourself, watch the Tampere version of this song. They pull out all the stops for the European shows and Finland, being their home base, gets the whole treatment. No Dawkins but the spectacle of it off the charts. This was at Wembley arena (12,500 people). The Tampere concert was at Ratina Stadium in front of 24,000 (including Floor's parents from the Netherlands) and is incredible. The whispering you could not understand is 'us sleeping' referring to the dormant life on early earth. The 'bagpipes' are Uileann pipes, where air is pushed by bellows instead of blown into the bag, more Irish instrument I think. The Goldilocks zone refers to planets where water can be frozen, liquid and vapor - such as earth - ideal for the development of life, not too cold, not too hot. When Richard Dawkins is on stage,he quotes the last paragraph of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species.

Nice to see you reacting to Nightwish again Josh. I really appreciate your background work on the lyrics.
Tuomas has hidden small melody bits inside the song which describe the history and development of music. I’ve tried to put together all the bits that many commentators have said the song contains (don’t know if everything is true):
African tribal drumming, a medieval hymn (presumably by Thomas of Celano): "Dies irae", Johan Sebastian Bach (Christian Petzold): "Minuet in G major and Toccata & Fugue in D minor", Arthur 'Guitar Boogie' Smith: "Duelling Banjos" (famous from the 1972 film Deliverance), Metallica: "Enter Sandman", the bassline from Nightwish: "Wish I Had An Angel" and Megadeth: "Symphony of Destruction". There's also a rap song at the end and an EDM beat and Mozart somewhere and the intro has (heh, I heard everything has) apparently some Johann Pachelbel at the core.

You got the right version. People like the Tampere one because there are fireworks, but musically Wembley stands head and shoulders above it. The e-bow guitar at the start is Troy, not Emppu. Of course I may be a little biased as I was there. No, I'm not. It is far better. And the drummer - Jukka had left the band by this point and Kai (Jukka's teacher) was playing.
Moving on to the pipes. They are Irish Uillean (pronounced Illen - Gaelic for elbow) pipes.

    • @MsCatstaff

The fireworks are cool, sure, but I prefer Tampere for Troy with the low whistle rather than the guitar with e-bow (and I know I'm in the minority on that) and also because some of the "music history" bits get lost in the mix at Wembley. I can barely hear the banjo, for example, and I know it's there - someone who's never heard the song before isn't likely to notice it at all.

The joy they show when performing is out standing, and I've watched a couple of their documentaries that bring out their personalities, and I'm sure you would get along great with them. They really strive to give their fans their very best at all of their concerts. Of the two performances of this song, this one has a better mix in the middle section to me with the music, where as the other performance is more of a spectacle for the Finland fans, of course that's my opinion.

Good choice of video. This UA-cam video is how UA-cam first introduced me to Nightwish a couple of years ago. I was totally amazed by the band, the performance, Floor, and the subject of the song. I have not stopped listening to the and saw them live Virtually last year and in Montreal in May 2022.

First time watching you, I understand if you don’t want to do a lot of artists, where the label copyrights everything, as you gotta make a living somehow, and time is valuable. Os nice to see new peoples reactions though…cause Nightwish is insanely good, and thanks for doing them.

The name Gaea is used as a word to represent the Earth. It is the root of words like geography, geophysics and geology etc.
That's Troy on the guitar at the start, not Emppu.
Later, Troy IS playing bagpipes, but they are Uilleann pipes from Ireland, which use a bellows under the arm rather than a mouthpiece.
The drummer is not Jukka, but Kai Hahto, Jukka Nevalainen's friend and replacement in the band since Jukka has been suffering from chronic insomnia (Jukka now works in a managerial capacity for Nightwish).
I was at this concert and it WAS amazing! :) "The Poet and the Pendulum" was the stand-out song for me at this gig - and that is saying a lot considering the competition it had (like this song)!

Awesome! Love reaction videos like this especially when the one reacting is a trained singer. If you take suggestions, I'd suggest Queensryche, Take Hold of the Flame live in Tokyo 1984. Geoff Tate, their singer, is also classically trained and this performance is arguably one of the best ever.

The greatest show on eurth actually is a book by Richard Dawkins. Dawkins is a biologist with philosophic tendencies. The quotes are from this book, except the last one. That is from The origins of species by Charles Darwin.

The whispering part was: "[somewhere there] us, sleeping"
And one part I wouldn't have got without hearing the explanation:
"Not a single one of your fathers died young"
is an statement of evolution: as you are here, and thus he is your father, he didn't die young. He had a chance to breed, and that's excactly what the genes need -to be put forward. Which makes the basis, the ground for evolution to happen. Wether it was a fish dad, worm, bacteria, or a human.

Life on earth is carbon based, probably because the four valence electrons of the carbon atom give it abilities to bond with other elements or carbon to create complex structures. Now, listen to the beginning, the first part called Four Point Six, and bear in mind that carbon is the sixth element on the periodic table with four valence electrons, bursting out forming more complex structures. Is it just me who thinks that this represents the origin of all life on earth?
The storytelling and the attention detail is just mindblowing.

  • @bsheldon2000

The song is based on the book by the same title written by Richard Dawkins. As individual humans, who only are part of the show for mere decades, yet we are still able to see the greatest show, which is the eons of the formation of the universe and the evolution of life on earth. Mind you not directly, but through the discoveries in science that have brought together the various pieces of this great show. Richard Dawkins is himself an evolutionary biologist working to add new pieces to the great show. And a show is meaningless without an audience, the lucky ones, yes that is us, we were here.

Those bagpipes are called; the Uilleann pipes or Irish pipes. Unlike the Scottish pipes in which you have to blow, the Uilleann pipes produce sound through a bellow which is being pressed by squeezing your elbow. The Uilleann pipes are way softer/delecate then the commonly known Scottish pipes, who produce a kinda harsher sound.

Though I do have to say, I’m glad you did this one, Sir Dawkins, brings some extra to the already insanely high table of Nightwish. But I recommend you watch the Tampere version, for just personal reasons, it’s very similar in most ways, but they have truly over the top and amazing pyrotechnics. So just a recommendation if you want to see an epic show, that’s slightly different and better in one way. Don’t need to do a reaction, just of you enjoy them, and got a little free time, feel like watching and hearing more of them, cannot go wrong with the Tampere version.

The lineup of the band is a bit different here. Kai Hahto is on drums, replacing Jukka who had to step down for health reasons, but is still with the band in a management capacity. The opening sequence is with Tuomas on keys and Troy Donockley on the guitar + E-Bow. If you hear an E-Bow being used on a guitar, it's always Troy. I realize that Troy and Emppu look alike when back lit. The harmonies in this song involve Floor, Marko and Troy.

Your reactions are soooo good! Love Nightwish and love your channel (fairly recent subscriber here, by way of Disturbed haha - have been bingeing your channel, so thanks for such great content).
Spielberg’s West Side Story has been nominated for a Grammy! This made me think how I’d love to see you do a reaction / analysis to Rachel Zegler, who I think was just 17 when she filmed the movie, and technically near-flawless but also an innate musicality! She’s in the upcoming The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Shazam! Fury of the Gods so would love to see you cover her! If something from WSS would be too difficult, @TylerCapa has on his channel her covering “Still Hurting” from the musical, “The Last Five Years” by Jason Robert Brown. Another one that would be fun is her 2015 video of when she went to the Broadway Flea Market and sang “A Little Fall of Rain” with the then Marius, Chris McCarrell (but there’s some crowd noise and it’s not the best audio). She was 14 at the time and already incredible, but her progress shows her dedication in how hard she’s worked and a testament to formal vocal training and coaching :)

Regarding the different concerts: A lot of people prefer the Tampere version, and it's good and spectacular in some ways. (Outdoor arena, fireworks, and a different vibe with the home crowd.) But I actually prefer this one from Wembley Arena, and it is the official live version on Nightwish's own channel after all. It's better production-wise with better sound. (Easier to get in the controlled environment of an indoor arena I guess.)

    Some information:
Troy plays the Ulliean Pipes, they are a irish kind of pipes that are played with the elbows, really cool sound
He also plays the guitar intro using the e-bow to make that violin-like sound
Also, Kai replaced Jukka in the drums in 2015 and it's currently the drummer, and Jukka (a different one lol) replaced Marko in the bass in 2020.

Troy is playing the Uilliean (I dont know the exact spelling) pipes, which is a type of Irish bagpipes with a mellower sound in which you don't blow, but where the air bladder is filled with a pump under the elbow. Is said to be very difficult to play

welcome back, long time no see :)
emppu is the lead gitarist of this band, but the intro (4.6) it was not him, it is Troy Donockley, 6th member and multi instrumentalist and some vocals, the bagpipes you meant are the uilleann pipes also played by Troy (the uilleann pipes are an irish instrument, the air is pumped with the ballon under the elbow(watch closly). this makes the player able to do vocals too)
ah, you know him already ;)
jukka, the drummer you know from wacken 2013 videos, had to step back because of medical issues in 2015 and he brought his friend Kai Hahto to the band to replace him
hope to see you soon, try their song "Music" which has a lyric video here in youtube, perfect to react to. the song is about the sounds of planet earth, from the standpoint/eyes(ears) of music (if it was a person)
