We've got a lot going on this week with a fresh rumor on PlayStation 5 Pro specs and details apparently being handed out to more studios. Looks like Sony is preparing an AI super resolution tool of their own with it's own name: PSSR. There was also some discussion around the possibility of PS2 games finally coming to PS5 due to some language used by the company working on Sony's classic games. And elsewhere through the week we have PS5 and PS4 firmware, Rise of the Ronin previews, a Stellar Blade demo mishap, a Spider-Man The Great Web leak, and Deviation Games shutting down. Meh. The only backwards compatibility that would excite me would be native ps3 support, NOT paywalled cloud/streaming support
I won’t get my hopes up. That’s why I have my backwards comp PS3. Sony is clearly not as interested in Ps1-ps3 compatibility for PS5 like Nintendo and Microsoft is.

I’m sick of this whole PS2 game emulation, I was hyped back in 2016 when it was announced for PS4 but then finding out we only got a total of 30 games in 6+ years I gave up and instead just use PCSX2 on PC. I don’t want them to even bother if they’re going to do the same nonsense again on PS5.

Pcsx2 can run pretty much any game at full speed and look better if your pc is strong enough.
60fps graphics mode on all games would be a reason to upgrade.
Its 2024 and it "should" be an standard in the first place.

The new PS5 update makes the main menu to load slower when you turn on the console. Also, for some strange reason, I tried to randomly play a digital PS4 game after the update. I chose Mass Effect Andromeda and it "updated it" but I did the same thing on my PS4 Pro but it didn't have an update. The thing is, I lost 2 gigs on my secondary SSD even though the game size is the same as the PS4. Where did those 2gigs go? lol I tried playing other digital PS4 games on PS5 but only Andromeda had that, as I would called it, "ghost" update that didn't do anything but took 2 gigs of memory.

I don't know if its a bug related to this specific update, but seriously, we can't afford losing memory in this day in age where games come in at 100gigs and have to forcibly (even physical) be installed on the SSD. Give us our gigs back Sony!
On the internal drive I have around 55gb ghosted somewhere on the system. And it's climbing. When I add up the installed games, saved data, and the "other" file, it correctly amounts to what the system tells me is used and what is available. When I move a game from my expansion drive or an external drive it will show the available space is 55gb less than the system storage menu shows. I've not found any way to reclaim that storage, and as I said that number is climbing.
@@chalk-one If a Ps4 game is on the free 4k/60 fps patch list PS store can down load both the Ps5 version and Ps4.
If it happens go to storage menu and manually delete the Ps4 version of the game .
The Ps4 game of "Mass Effect Limited Edition" has the free 4k/60fps patch but
Mass Effect Andromeda did not get the free patch it is stuck in 1080p/30fps Ps4 mode as far as I know.
About 140 ps4 games got the free 4k/60fps patch so far .
I get it with PS3 but the fact that I cant put in my ps1 and ps2 discs on my PS5 should be a sign that were going backwards not forward.
It’s insane to me. It can’t be that difficult to make an emulator that would run natively on the ps5, it would easily play ps1 and ps2 games

Not so hidden, but deserves a revival all the same: Viewtiful Joe. There is no way to play any Viewtiful Joe games on modern consoles or PC (legally).
If ps6 has backwards disk compatibility from ps1-ps6, it'll be the best and most sold console if including ps2 & ps3 online too

PS3 is what is causing the backwards compatible issues. It was a complicated machine. It Will probably play ps4-ps6 games if it still uses x86
Your assuming the PS6 will even have a disc drive. With the way digital sales are going, PS6 won't have it which is sad being that I got 6 PS5 physical games as well as 2 PS4 games.
I need to see a noticeable improvement in certain games to upgrade to a ps5 pro. Anyone whose played FF16 knows that even with the patches over the games launch, performance mode is incredibly inconsistent and the 30fps fidelity mode is really the only way to play the game at a stable rate; which is what I did. So If I ever go back and replay it again in the future it'd be nice to play at a stable 60fps.
That's because square enix can't optimize a game to save their lives lol. Even FF7 Rebirth can't reach a decent frsmerate without making everything look so fuzzy and blurry its like its underwater

This is my first.
I built a dedicated pc for emulation and pc games for my tv years ago and never looked back. I’ll die from old age before Sony releases a ps2/ps3 emulator
That’s smart and is the way moving forward. Sony doesn’t really have any incentive to release a ps2/ps3 emulator. Their recent strategy is to remaster or remake games from the ps2, ps3, or even PS4 generation so they get more money that way.
Still waiting for The 3rd Birthday to get added to the ps classics library. I loved the game!
I'll devour that game when they make it available. Good memories playing it, even if I remember thinking it was far from perfect back then.

PS2 will probably run into similar issues as the PS1 will, since during the first two PlayStation generations Sony was extremely reliant on other people’s games, and third parties re-release their games as classic compilations, remasters, or remakes on their own so Sony would have to rely on their own first and second party titles at the time.
At the very least PlayStation 2 was better than the PlayStation with in house games and they’ve aged a lot better so Ratchet and Clank, God of War, and Japan Studios games like Ico and Hot Shots Golf coming over like the Jak and Daxter games did would be cool.
Still licenses would be an issue since a lot of great games like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Guitar Hero, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance wouldn’t come to PS4 and PS5, so you’d probably be better off buying a PS2 for the games you want or emulating anyways.
The Ps5 plays all 3,454 Ps4 game titles made so that is good enough to keep me busy.
Any great Ps3 and Ps2 games were remastered for the Ps4 a long time ago.

Ico, Tekken Tag Tournament, Ace Combat 4 & 5, Dragon Quest VIII, Viewtiful Joe, Pac-Man World 2, Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Sonic Heroes, SSX3, Timesplitters 2 & Future Perfect, SOCOM, Heavenly Sword, Resistance Trilogy, Motorstorm, LittleBigPlanet 1 & 2, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale plus the Ratchet and Clank, God of War, and Killzone games on both consoles among some hidden gems like Radiata Stories and Puppeteer are still locked to those consoles.
There’s still a lot of great games that have yet to come over the PS2 and PS3 libraries are stacked with excellent games.

They recently did the Phantom Menace PS1 game so I hope they do the Revenge of the Sith PS2 game if they are adding PS2 titles. It is on the PS3 but I’d take it on every console.
One interesting QOL update I noticed after the latest firmware is you get a notification now when someone joins or leaves a discord chat. Before there was nothing.
Still have no clue why rise of ronin is coming out so close to FF7 and on the same day as dragons dogma 2 seams like a death sentence for a new IP
They also added/fixed discord integration, before you weren’t able to know when someone joined your voice chat. Now you actually get notified with a pop up. Thought I would mention that with the 9.00 update

I noticed the speaker on the day of the update because I have been playing Death Stranding and it was very noticable that BB was louder along with the rock, water and other sounds that come out of the controller speaker. I mean it was way better so then I went and checked if the update did something for that.

I’ll even take an add on for the PS5 that can play PS3/Vita games. It seems like if they can’t get it to emulate on PS5, why not get an separate add on that can read the PS3 discs or Vita cards with its own storage that we can download the games off the Legacy side of PS Store? But then again it would require Sony to actually make an effort.

I ended up just buying the OGs on the PS3 store.
The only other example I can think of Sony forcefully issuing a refund / revoking a license was for Afro Samurai 2, but that was a bizarre scenario that I don't quite understand and was at the publisher's request.
This may be not be feasible, but I would prefer if Sony built a new legacy machine that played PS3, PS2 and PS1 games natively via disc and downloads from the store. No emulation. They could charge $199 and I think it would sell alongside their current gen machine. That preserves their legacy games, keeps gamers happy who have older collections, and allows them to focus on their future while solving the backwards compatibility discussion. Everything PS4 and up will be playable on whatever new machine they make.
If your patient enough to give it about a decade (I'm both half joking but at the same time completely serious with that time frame), I wouldn't be surprised if Analogue Inc. eventually creates something similar to what your are describing with advances in FPGA emulation and cost reduction for more powerful chips over time. They already created native consoles to play original games for NES, SNES, Gameboy/GBA, Genesis/master system, and TurbogGrafx/PC engine all with 1080p output and perfect integer scaling options and are currently slated to release an N64 console that outputs at 4k. Really premium level products if you've never heard of them or have but never bothered to check out any of their stuff.
They are pretty much at the end of cartridge game systems history for emulation and have already dabbled in CD emulation with their newest Analogue Duo system. The natural next step would be for them to move onto PS1 and Sega Saturn eras with a focus on CD emulation. Eventually, if they ever make it to a PS3 emulated system, I would expect them to target emulating the Fat versions with full backward compatibility with PS1 and PS2 (especially if they have already perfected emulation for those consoles with previous console releases leading up to their PS3 console).
So the good news is, if the company is still around by then, they will likely make your wish come true! The bad news is, making a PS3 console utilizing FPGA tech to perfectly emulate PS3, PS2, and PS1 while at the same time being cost effective to produce and market to a mass audience, is not showing up for a long, long, long time.
They already released such a thing. It's called the original fat PS3. It had a ps3 chip to play ps3 games natively and had ps2 chips in it to play ps2 and ps1 games natively no emulation. The later model switched to PS2 and PS1 emulation. And later models dropped PS2 all together but still had PS1 through emulation only.
Aspyr just dropped the Star Wars battlefront collection so all my ps2 game needs are met ❤️

I'm genuinely frustrated with Sony's lack of respect for their prior generations.
It's remarkable that PS2 and PS3 launched with full backwards compatibility with the prior generations. Since then, fans such as myself who enjoy returning to older titles are completely disregarded. It's very frustrating. Especially considering hobbyists on PC care more than the platform holder. Bah!

As of said, the pssr is part of the new sdk. The game would have to be ported to the new sdk, which they didn’t even do for ps4 pro

I want backwards compatibility, but I want it in the true sense of it. I want to put my PS1 and PS2 discs into my PS5 and it will work (PS3 would be icing on the cake). They won’t do it though, because they want to sell you the same old handful of games over and over.
So people who can’t afford pay high prices old games get left out the answer is no
The PS5 can’t read CDs so PS1 is out of the question, and PS2 emulation is too complicated for them they’ve ran into issues multiple times. PS3 emulation is never happening.
While yes it is motivated tv greed, there are also very real technical hurdles that present big challenges. Xbox had to overcome a lot in an uphill battle to get backwards compatibility to work, and even then it’s not true native compatibility in the way you’re talking about it. It’s a reverse engineered roundabout way of doing things that required a lot of back end support. I doubt we will ever see native backwards compatibility for anything beyond the PS4 generation ever again.
@@mmarshfairc3 Xbox seems to have no issue with it. Though it doesn't really emulate 360 as that would be impossible and out of the question as the Xbox series S/X are not powerful enough. Instead they re-released a bunch of 360 games to the store and they are technically ports or remasters that are Xbox One and up compatible. And you can buy them on the eshop. Or you can pop a disc in and they give it to you for free. Other companies usually charge for such a thing. So no reason PlayStation can't do something similar with PS3 games. PS2 emulation is to easy now. My 15 year old PC can play nearly all the PS2 library fine with PCSX2. The PS5 has a x86x64 chip it's the same architecture chip as a PC. No reason they can't run a PS2 emulator on it to play PS2 games.

Could be they share the same controller ICs for practical reasons. So may be that explains it, if it happens every update.
Shift Up going public sorta worries me since usually it's that kind of thing that pushes companies to go harder on monetizing. Probably goes deeper than that but that's what is usually consistent with greedy studios/publishers. Ig the Nikke money will help with that.

I was going to hold on to base PS5 until PS6. But just imagine playing FF7 Rebirth in high resolution and fidelity and still smooth 60 fps. I am gonna cave.
Actually backwards compatible would be, using your physical DVD-Rom ps2&ps3, Blu-ray Rom PS3 games and your digital purchased games for PS3 alle being playable on the PS4&PS5

Regarding the PS2 games on PS5 being a matter of "when" rather than "if", well, I wouldn't be all too sure about that. PlayStation fumbled and discontinued the PS2 offerings on PS4 rather quickly, I doubt that they're in much of a hurry to get any of them on PS5.
OH WOW SUPER RESOULUTION WE ARE REALLY LIVING IN THE FUTURE, Jesus I just can't with these companies, their over here trying to sell people on a pro console when the base system isn't even being pushed to its limits, or for that matter having anything that makes it worth buying a whole console for its game library
It would be nice if they ported more PS2 games to buy on the PS5. Draken: the ancients gates and Pryzm: chapter one the dark unicorn would be great! We didn't get many PS2 games on the PS4.
The specs will be 10 times as good as the xbox pro. 16k gaming in full 240 frames per second ❤ and a geforce gtx 5090 ti ❤ with 48 gb ram. And 2 tb harddrive.
I am fine with 4K. 8K won't be a standard for quite some time.

Realistically whats stopping them from adding bavwars compatibility to the ps5 maybe not 3 cause of the cell architecture but 1 and 2 should be easier so why not.
There's also another PS3 firmware update if that matters at all. Had to download it last night

I would prefer TRUE backwards compatibility. I actually have a few PS2 game disks that I don't want to get rid of, and would prefer a new console that plays them.
I love that Sony is closing the gap between PC and console, especially when you consider diminishing returns. PC gaming is fine, but the older i get, the less i feel like fiddling with a PC to get it to work.
Im glad to see Sony and Nintendo having so much success with sales, because hardware and physical media needs to remain an option for consumers. If Microsoft had their way we would just pay for access, basically just rent games.
considering it's AMD based hardware it's not going to be that great. Computers are also really plug and play these days. Not too much work goes into setting one up. Consoles are a great bang for the buck, but other than that they can't really hold their ground.
You’re delusional if you think Sony is better. There’s a reason they made the ps5 digital,they want to cut out physical also because they make more profit.
Nintendo will also do the same eventually they already stepped up their online marketplace
I quit PC gaming back in 2018 or 2019. Probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. Lol. Sticking consoles has just been so much simpler and easier and I get in the game so much faster

Sony is putting custom work into this hardware, it's not JUST amd.
I do have a gaming PC. You're always fiddling with updating drivers, antivirus, all kinds of random BS. Not to mention online games are full of hackers and cheaters.
I haven't seen anything on PC much better than horizon forbidden West, and it's DLC, or TLOU remake, TLOU2, Ragnorok, and so on. Matter of fact the most popular PC games are very underwhelming graphically. Some of the best looking games on PC are PlayStation games, and you can get that same experience for less than the price of a chip for a PC.

Over half of ALL games Nintendo sells are physical.
Sure these companies stand to gain more from an individual sale of a digital game, but it's not worth what they would lose by pissing off their customers.
Microsoft has groomed it's consumers to not buy games. Only 4% of Hogwarts legecy sales were on Xbox. That's why more and more 3rd party are skipping the platform
