For all the peeps wondering who it is/what the song is called, it's called Classical Gas and it was written and recorded (to the best of my knowledge) by Mason Williams, not Mark Knopfler and not Eric Clapton as a lot of people seem to think. Hope I could help :)
Hi jurginbatista, Thank you so much for the wonderful 'classical' guitar from Mark Knofpler! I have a tiny pair of phone ear buds but will get some real hi-fi muffs soon! Take care, mrbluenun
Whoever Mason Williams and Eric Clapton are, their imitations of Mark Knopfler's classical recording here are just incredibly accurate. Still, one would hope that they develop styles of their own, lest their careers end up in dire straits.
This is Mason Williams' - he did an two versions of classical gas. The Mason Williams Phonograph Record has the version with the orchestra - it was released in 1968. Mason Williams recorded this acoustic version of Classical Gas on Handmade which came out in 1970.
Lots of great guitar players have covered this, but this is Mason Williams' original solo recording. He also did it with an orchestra, which is the more "popular" track, but this is Mason, for sure.
For me the greatest guitarist I've heard ... I really like Eric Clapton, BB King, Santana, Angus Young, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix ... but I still think Knopfler, better than everyone else ...
Gosto mto do Eric Clapton, BB King, Santana, Angus Young, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix... mas ainda acho Knopfler melhor q tds os outros...
@gilbert20 Oh, yeah, I do remember. I remember getting so excited when I would hear those introductory notes. "Hey, turn up the radio, man! It's that Classical Gas song, man!"
Mason Williams wrote this circa 1968!!! He was also a comedy writer for the Smother's Brother's show!!! Classical Gas is an awesome piece of music, when did Knopfler get credit for it?????
@gilbert20 Anyone who knows anything at all about guitar knows that this is Mason Williams playing his own composition Classical Gas on Warner Bros WS-1838 released 3/10/70. It was is 2nd release. The first had an orchestra and won 3 grammys in 68. This album is "Handmade". This version is the most broadcast, most covered, and most famous guitar instrumental of all time. It is on the radio somewhere in the world 3 out of every 4 minutes.
No doubt Mark could play this song "Classical Gas" just as well as Mason Williams is doing here. Mr.Williams version is completely unmistakable as his own. One of the all time great guitar classics.
I compiled a CD of covers ranging from the Ventures to the Boston Pops, along with a couple variations by Mason Williams himself. I call it Classical Gasses and I never get bored listening to all 12 tracks together. My point is that I know this is the original artist and to my knowledge Mark Knopfler has never been recorded playing this song. I would like to hear his take on it, though.
DocDocJerry is correct, Mason Williams originally wrote and recorded this song; however this particular recording is not Mason Willilams, this is a cover from Mark Knopfler.
All I know, folks, is that Knopfler arranged this song to one of his instrumental ( guess it was for the soundtrack of a movie)records, but it never made it to be one of the tracks on the record when it was released :)
@a96ozsteak Its not that there are notes missing in the playing, whats wrong is there are notes missing in the tablatures. I have the sheet music from 68, the 1974 Guitar Player Mag. tabs and sht. music, Mason Williams Book, and several professional transcriptions. All are slightly different as each transcriber heard it.
and also, I've done some research and this IS Mason Williams himself although it sounds like a note or two might have been missing or a little off from his tablature there. I also used to think it was Mark Knopfler, but no, Mark would have played it more sharply.
lol, yes, it is all coming back to me! I sort of remember the song as well:P It ended with "...but we have the power." and it sort of went "...so we march day and night.. something, something..."in the chorus. okay I dont remember much:P but thanks for reminding me ;D
This is Mason Williams, playing his 2nd release of his composition CG. Its on his album "Handmade", Warner Bros Catalog WS-1838 released 3/10/70. His first release has the orchestra section, and the album is called the Mason Williams Phonograph Record. It won 3 grammys in 1968 Knopler is a great guitarist, but this is not him playing in this video.
Its Mason Williams and no one else, from his album Handmade released sometime around 1972-73. People mistakenly think its Eric Clapton. I've loved this since 1968 when it won a couple of grammys for Mason.
@angels77100 Its not Knopler., Its Mason Williams, he wrote it, plays it here, and won 3 grammys for it in 68. He has released it 38 times., Each a little different,. This version is from WS-1838 (Warner Bros) released 3/10/70. The album's name is "Handmade".
@ascoop22 Thats exactly what it is some say Clapton but the story is, this was recorded, by Mason, as a solo version, for a movie, which, clapton had also done music for
To add to the foray about this track .... it's (originally) a Mason Williams number called "Classical Gas", first appearing on AM radio around '69 or '70 .... can't remember exactly. It's weird that it became a hit on top 40 pop & R&R stations. Probably an "accident" .... why else would such a cut be played along side Jimi Hendrix ?!?! Actually couldn't say who's playing this version. The radio version includes a bridge with an orchestra ... HA! rgds
Ive even had this as an mp3 and had it attributed to Knopfler. No one who knows MK would actually believe this is him. On the other hand I have actually heard a live recording of Clapton playing this and can recognise his voice from it so you never know !
@utubesnamepolsux Its not from the MW Phonograph Record. Its from his second release, WS-1838 Warner Bros. "Handmade". released 3/10/70. The "MW Phonograph Record is WS 1729 released 2/1/68.That arrangement has the orchestra and won 3 grammys in 1968.
Who says this is Mason Williams? I know it's HIS piece, but a few have covered it, including Hank Marvin and Clapton. This IS different, in it's detail, to my in-my-head "recording" of Mason's versions - I hear a LOT of thumbnail, which is Knopflers' signature, and I hear a guy taking a more measured pace through the VERY fast parts which Mason charged through, on the several versions of his I have ever heard. I don't discount this as Knopfler. It's a very neat, toneful version.
Come on knuckleheads - "Classical Gas" is an instrumental musical piece composed and originally performed by Mason Williams. That does NOT mean that Knopfler can't cover it. JEEEEEZZZZZZ!!!!
@Picasanta It's Classical gas ... williams mason is the original composer .. , there is another version of this song that i like too from ' Rosenberg trio'
Knopler is a great guitarist but this is Mason Williams "Classical Gas" his 2nd release "Handmade" Warner Bros WS-1838 rel. 3/10/71. The 1st was WS-1729 on 5/2/68. It won 3 grammys. 2 for MW, 1 for Mike Post the orchestra arranger. It is the most aired, broadcast and known guitar instrumental in the world and is an important part of guitar history. Neither Mark Knopler nor Eric Clapton has recorded it. but many artists have. Its been used in many films, tv shows and radio.
ok so this instrumentals had a few cover versions done. Does it really matter who wrote it. I don't really know I don't mind either all I know is that this is a bloody amazing piece of music and I envy them all for being able to play that well. Lol Damn you guitar legends, you rock so much :P
Im sure Knopfler (or clapton who is also often in error credited for this recording) can play this tune (called "classical gas") very well, but this is Mason Williams playing his own composition. This is Masons recording a few years after he did it originally and is nearly identical except for there being no horn section in the middle. Tommy Emanuals version is far different and more complex than Masons way of playing it.
