The Sopranos - Ralph Gets Passed Over

- Ralph Cifaretto gets passed over as capo of the Aprile crew. Tony makes less qualified solider Gigi Cestone the new captain. One of the reasons being Ralph took Jackie Jr on a pick up that turned violent.

This was the most respectful I’ve ever seen Tony to Ralphie and you can tell he was still so happy to ruin Ralph’s day.
Yeah. He actually said 'I'm sorry.'
ahahahaha
Ralph was my most hated among the characters. He made Richie seem pleasant. I like to imagine him roasting in hell with Christopher in the Irish bar and Carmela serving them drinks topless. Alternatively, I like to imagine Paulie Gaultieri making his way into purgatory by the skin of his teeth and all the altar linen he bought. Sometimes I found myself liking him.
@@thecancelling2870 Instead of Carmela, let it be Ginny. In the corner, Leotardo is droning on about his stint in prison, and Uncle Jr. is reminding Satan "You may run the ninth circle of Hell, but you don't run your Uncle Junior!"
@@thecancelling2870 I don't know, sounds like purgatory, did Ralph multiply all his venial sins by 50? And then all his mortal sins by 25?
I love how furio always knows his place and always comes up with a subtle excuse to leave whenever tony has to talk to someone.
John Sam True, he did it a few times throughout his stay on the show..”I gotta make a phone call” or some other quick excuse to let Tony talk business. He’s there as muscle in case Shit goes bad. I’m sure he was watching closely from that coffee shop.

San 'Santino' Paik Tony hated small talk, he cut even his closest people off when he wanted to get to the point.

I think it was because tony had tried to change the subject for what he was about to say but Ralph didn’t pick up on it and was about to talk more about their kids

godking You got THAT. Things were going to go way down from there. Makes me think, why was it so 'personal' between those two?
Jealousy. Ralph wanted to be Tony, and he would have been if he took him out. He was the highest earner, he was ruthless, he would have either convinced you to join him or simply beat you into submission, or worse; simply murder you. He was a sick, twisted character. Very well played.
sTrax you can’t wack a mafia boss and take his place without the support of the capos and probably the ok any another family with business ties.
Not having the support system in play would mean instant death.
sTrax Ralph was actually a decent person off of coke too.

It’s that transition from small talk to business. The lean forward, the pat on the hand to get his attention. The camera pivots to convey the shift in mood and tone. Tony says, “it’s my decision”, with finality, then “this is business.” All of this to bring Ralphie to heel. Tony redefines business away from “…the bottom line” and towards something in between loyalty and compliance. Ralphie needs to learn to kiss the ring, but he never will.
more like kiss the pork knuckle
This is more or less where Ralphie decides to be a thorn in Tony's side.
"He is like a dog with two bones" - Ralph.

Then Ralphie winds up with a cap in his ass.

Tony's the boss, he can do that.
That's how you deliver bad news. No stalling. No beating around the bush. Sometimes it's not a great idea to even use a qualifier. "Ralphie...I got some news you're not going to like." It works here, but why tell someone what there reaction is going to be? Tony is good at that stuff. When people start using qualifiers with him "Tony I didn't want to bother you cuz you had such such going on..." Tony would cut them off...."I don't want to hear that....go" he would say. Get right to the point and lay it out clear and confidently. That's what a leader does IMO.

Everyone here claiming this was a personal decision by Tony is overlooking that Johnny Sac moved to Jersey and was tight with Ralph. Tony didn't want to risk the Aprile crew falling under NY.
Ralph even talked changing families with Johnny sac
lol The Aprile crew can't just get up and say "were changing families". They can have strong alliance with NY but this was personal. Ralph was already one of Tony biggest earners and he wasn't even a Capo. Uncle Jun said it right "You messed up by putting that outsider in that crew"
@@Lupinthe3rd. And what did Johnny Sac say? He shut that down pretty quick. Btw this was cause Ralph was afraid Tony was going to whack him. Ralph had a legit request to switch sides.
Still, it wasn't personal. Tony was smart enough to see that a guy like Ralphie could easily try and succeed what Junior or Richie couldn't do. And it doesn't matter that Jhonny Sack turned down for the switching families at that time. If a beef came up between Tony and NY, Carmine, Phil and even Jhon, later, would've supported Ralphie for the leadership, in order to maintain the cash flow. Of course, if it wasn't the Ginny joke.
I just noticed how Tony gives his thoughts about being a parent, and when Ralph starts to answer he cuts him off.
I love how Tony provides an explanation even though he doesn't have to.
The Sopranos is set in North Jersey, which has a good amount of bleak industrial grid and commercial strip (as well as just as many agreeable places). On the whole the state has plenty of scenic areas and countryside; in fact NJ is known as the "garden state".
Charles Schwab over here
"Timeshares are an excellent real estate investment."
Only by people who have never left Newark.
"Gigi? You shitting me?" ....the foreshadowing
Tony damn near closes his eyes whenever givin bad news, like when he told Jackie jr his uncle was cooperating.
I like the subtle line towards the end from Tony "its my decision." Most people in the real world that have to give bad news to people (like when a boss fires someone at a real job, for instance) give other reasons so that they don't have to take the blame and feel guilty for fucking someone. Tony has far too much balls for that. ITS MY DECISION
Any good boss will do that, and line of business. There's always a chain of command and higher bosses, but your smaller crew needs to think everything runs by you.... Even when it doesn't necessarily. When you get orders from up top, they become your orders.
"This is business" says the hypocrite to his biggest earner.
Tony knew Ralph was smarter than him. You don’t give a guy trying to take your job a leg up.

I always thought how incredibly depressing that it must have been for Furio to come from such a stunningly beautiful place as Naples with it's vast history and rich culture... to wind up in Jersey. I don't remember if it was shown or not. But, did Furio have any say in the matter? Or was he basically ordered, like it or not, to go back with Tony? He was a hell of a good sport about it if he didn't have a choice.
Chris AA good sport? He was also sent here to watch for the family's interest back home. He kicks up directly to the Boss back home from the car business in Jersey
+Chris AA I don't know if he had a say in it but I remember him saying in Naples how homesick he always was. I have to respect that he never let it show, I bet if Paulie or Chris were in the same situation they would be whining about it non-stop.
+Chris AA Tony specifically demanded that Furio be sent to America. He liked what he saw of him in Naples and requested him by name. So I'm sure he had very little to no say about it.
Whether or not Furio would have had any say is irrelevant ultimately. He was a soldier through and through. If given an order, he would follow through without complaint.
+Chris AA Yeah,Tony was a suvereign leader, very pragmatic and level-headed...dude,there´s more ways to describe him as shitty leadershipmaterial as opposed to the opposite...but the Ralphie situation pretty much defines tonys BS philosophy regarding morals and which rules to follow and which to break..it started out, first 30 seconds about Tracee, when Ralph was murdered, she wasn´t even on his mind subconciously.... Ralph did the right thing turning down that drink, showing selfrespect, cause judging by Tony and Sils talk,he was NEVER really gonna apologize, haha!! He REALLY thought offering a drink would clear it all up,which is why it was so satisying to see his ego bruised. Just sit down and talk sports? Right...
Tone winged the entire Ralphie-fiasco,he had NO CLUE on how to resolve it,his pride got the better of him and only thanks to Johnny Sack talking to Tony would he turn cocky-"Might relieve me of a very a painful decision"..plus J Sacks advice to Ralph was basically"scrape and bow like a servant"T was ,all passive-agressive,stuffin´his face while Ralphie crawled for mercy....and then Sack wonders why Ralphie wanted to kill Tone.... .
They solved it All with a silly, very convenient plot solution, like eh...a Deus ex machina? Don´t know the saying but the manifestation of it was Gigi dying on the shitter very outta the blue and in the end,T murdered his by Far best earning Capo over a horse...but mostly,a Fatty joke. So those who feel Tone was the avenging angel, ridding the world of Ralph for Tracee, should check the scoreboard and see how demented and disturbed his priorities and moral high grounds were....maybe Ralph brought out the worst in him but he still exposed Tonys weaknesses and hipocrisy as a leader

Gives even more credence to the idea that if Ralph went to Carmine and ignored Johnny's crack about "Carmine doesn't know who you are", he would have been in a much better position and likely could have switched families and been valued highly there for the incredible earner he is. Carmine is a calculating business motivated mobster, whereas Tony is completely ruled by his emotions.
Wouldn't be possible unless Tony agreed, Carmine wouldn't alienate Jersey and the other NY families just to get Ralph. Plus wasn't John in control of NY construction so Ralph would be put on his crew.
