- White Pony is one of my favorite albums! I spent a few hours nerding out about the whole thing live. Passenger is one of my favorites.

Hi y'all, sorry I missed the premiere of my own video. I have no good excuse, I just spaced out. Hope you kept each other company in the chat!
I'm ambivalent AT BEST about Maynard but this is THE song I played the everloving shit out of in my car back in the day. This + BE Quiet and Drive were on just about ever car mix CD I burnt.
Would you do an active listing vid for a donation?
I'm a big fan of how you take in the whole experience of a song and then analyze and appreciate all the little things that build it up. It really takes me back being a loner with a cd player and only a few soundtracks I learned to really listen for a different aspect every time I listen to it.

U should also do covers of songs becouse U have such good voice and skill to transition to piano any song:)
Maynard just has this amazing ability to pick collabs that always work. I can't think of any duds in his repetoire. And he has maintained his sense of wonder and more importantly, his curiosity which is why he is still an active musician. Always exploring, always challenging himself. This song puts my brain in interesting positions- I have just enough music training to call on to get sucked into your analysis and have some thoughts as to the choices made, and posit my own thoughts. There is subtle discomfort in the "quieter" portions, that then gets relief through the amazing drumming and guitar work. Maynard's belts add a gritty tension to the overall feel. I love it. I love that I tense up and feel like I'm being driven along. Ahhhhh.... ~grin~
We end up being his passenger. Great work Ixi! Thank you for these.
Ixi, you say all the time that you don't sing/you're not a singer, but every time you do- it's gorgeous!
I'm impressed to find out that basically every song I've been really digging lately it's in Phrygian. Crazy how sometimes our ears gravitate towards a very specific sound like that.
This song is so powerful, sensual and carefully plotted. So amazing.
After this is "Change in the House...." The only reason I bring it up is, in my opinion, this 1-2 combo is what cemented this album in the "Rock History" list. (Is that even a thing..........it should be!!)
Very fun song to play on guitar. Stephen Carpenter writes great, often simple, riffs. Very heavy, rhythmic and atmospheric.
You should check out his Ernie Ball String Theory episode. He basically says the power chord is everything for him. haha
@@TheDeadStretch That's interesting to hear because I feel like of all the rock music I've analyzed I hear fewer power chords and a lot more complex ones!
@@iximusic It's super simple chords to play on guitar in this song. Deftones drop their low E so all you need to do is just bar your index finger. Very easy song to play, but still great.
@@iximusic I think he bases stuff off power chords cos it's super simpler with the drop tunings he uses, but then he adds extra notes in the other strings for that dissonant wall of sound he wants, and just happens that he picks the notes that make up the ninths and what not cos it sounds right
Excellent breakdown. I’m always so impressed with your ability to pull the notes, chords, keys, beats, etc.
One of my all time favourite songs period. So evocative and superb lyrics.
24:09 my brain immediately heard "Something I Can Never Have."
Chino was a Tool fan and had hung out with them in their Rehearsal space
When they started recording White Pony they invited Maynard down just to hang out
He acted like a mentor and showed them different methods of song writing, different time signatures, and things that Tool is of course famous for.
He sang some spontaneous lyrics over what would later be Passenger as an example and the band was blown away.
Maynard just being in the room made them sound like Tool seemingly without any effort, he elevated the entire performance just by being there. He really does have that kind of presence and talent.
Maynard described Deftones writing style as being very chaotic compared to what he was used to. Maynard is used to waiting for his bands to write the melodies and basic tracks and comes in very late in the process to write the lyrics. Where-as Chino is very much an I have lyrics and poetry written in a notebook type.
A couple of months later when they were ready to properly record Passenger Chino couldn't get Maynard's singing out of his head and they decided to invite him back to do a duet.
Chino was struggling to write with Maynard because they work so differently, so Maynard left wrote his part of the lyrics very quickly, and left space for Chino to put in his lyrics to be spontaneous and do his thing.
Chino remembers Maynard as being brilliant and incredibly professional to work with.
The band meanwhile joked that they had accidentally gotten their token celebrity on the album that Maverick wanted.
The lyrics seem to be about someone driving a car too fast while high and receiving oral sex.
You just made me realize how great this song actually is. Just chills... and dissolve.........
Sadly I'm not able to Patreon, but I have a SERIOUSLY awesome suggestion for you for the future.... STP's Core. There's so much there for you to feast on outside the singles (and inside).
great album
Deftones and Maynard did a great job!! Although, I wish Trent and Maynard would have done more together. From what I remember reading. Trent was going to do a huge project with Maynard in New Orleans. Unfortunately, hurricane Katrina killed that. I'm sure it would've been epic.
yep Tapeworm! I believe that's where APC's "potions" was born. good song
@@darylmartin3860 I think you mean Puscifer: 'Potions'. I actually had to think about that for a second because some APC sounds like it could be Puscifer and I thought maybe I had it wrong all this time 🤣
im so hype that youre breakin down deftones. ive always wanted to put words to how their music is do different and special
There's an alternate(studio) ending to this where Chino hangs onto the "drive" line and I think you'd find the melodies interesting.
Ultimately I think the intensity of just the instrumental has more "oomph" to the song and the overall vibe of the album.
Sad to see this album coming to a close soon!
Always loved this song.
Man. I wish Tapeworm became a thing. APC ended up doing a song (or two?) from this dream Maynard/Trent project.
I'm glad you're singing in your videos now that you have confidence. You have such an ear for music and we appreciate you
That 1, 5, flat 6 sounds like it came straight out of the Halloween movie theme. Sooooo creepy but so good. Also, you are wicked talented!
Perfection? I sure think so……love it!
I've not heard this in years. Proper blast from the past. I feel almost like I don't know who I've been in the last twenty something years, as I listen to it now. Maybe I don't.
"Drrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive faaaaaaaaaaaasssssssterrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!" Maybe james leading into the note with the ughhhhhh and chino's reply is a play on the whole sex thing. Chino's reply sounds very sexual. The whole song is very sexual. An extremely passionate dangerous relationship, like the adam's family parents... but in the movie sin city. the 1st 3 notes at 30:28 had the same spacing on the keys as 23:52. When i head the one at 23min i was like "sounds like the ending kinda."
Holy shit I was channeling "even deeper" when you said it. Love it. The hihats in even deeper are so satisfying
YES!!! Been waiting for ya to do this one!! AND SO SO SOOO much fun to play drums too!!
damn I can imagine - hopefully I can get to that level one day
@@iximusic Fun Fact for you: Ade's toms are arranged in a unique way. Typically it goes small to big (left to right) but Abe flips his two rack toms so it goes big to small. So in order it's 12", 10", 16" 18". Two racks and two floor toms.
Fantastic review, love your enthusiasm and knowledge both in general and of this song in particular.
“Drive faster.....we know what you mean!” LOL.
@ixi music are you going to be doing other Deftones albums or maybe individual tracks off various records in the near future? I'm loving this series!
Deftonitely ;)
@@iximusic I come here for the musical analysis, but I stay for the puns
White pony to me is peak Deftones. Abe was going bananas and of course this song , Maynard is just that guy lol. Btw , absolutely love your breakdowns and visibly reactions to the music. Big fan !
Can't wait 💜💜💜
am I the only one that imagines a Chino and Maynard gay fantasy when hearing this?
You're not the only one
I feel like your thumbnail is catching me at that game we used to play in the kitchens of Texas. Like you're gonna punch me for looking!
this is great
9:27 "The Guitar is in E Phrygian" I don't think Steph even know what that means. lmao I know Chino for sure doesn't. Chino has no idea how to tune a Guitar properly. haha 🤣
Listen to Steph and Chino talk about tunings. It's too funny - ua-cam.com/video/U1Ck411_5ZA/v-deo.html
haha that was great
Your taste in music is impeccable. I feel that we would have been good friends, had geographical circumstances happened to have placed us in proximity to one another, oh... 15 years ago perhaps?
I love how you think haha. Great stuff, thanks! Love this song.
You're great.
Just the piano, 10000% could be a NIN song. Also, one of my fav Maynard performances. Especially when he ramps it up for the second chorus.
That ending always fools me. They set you up for another reprise of the chorus, but nope, song's over LOL.
2 of the best voices from the 90s... whats not to love
Came for the analysis, stayed for the innuendo
In YOUR endo
@@JohnKerans oi
I hear a lot of this song in Tool's Pneuma. Would love to see a breakdown of the common elements between the two!
Maynard is rapping in Slow mo. Super rhythmic
🤩
Amazing video Amazing sonh
15:35 Imo there is only one other drummer who can match Abe with those tasteful ghost notes on the snare and that's 311's Chad Sexton.
(Sorry more comments as I watch it back haha)
I often think about Danny Carey, Tomas Haake or Tim Alexander as my major influences as a drummer, but DAMN did Abe with shape the way I use ghost notes and accents displacements. I love how he constantly changes bits and pieces of the groove all the time to keep you interested without ever making it sound too busy.
Chad is sadly overlooked way too often imo.
@@CFChristian Not sure 311 is very big internationally. I remember Down from back in the days, but that's pretty much it.
Chad sexton is the cleanest drummer ever.
if you like defones, check out their cover of The Chauffuer
The like echoing sound @ 24:45 that you mention a few times... You mime it by hitting like a ride cymbal or something but I'm like 90% sure it's using a pick on the bass strings near the tuning pegs, above the nut. Justin Chancellor of Tool does this trick a couple of times and it has a very similar, sort of metallic dissonant clanging sound. Just thought I'd share!
Oh yeah that makes sense! It does sound kind of guitar-like. Cool!
not even a deftones fan but this song fucking rules, has special sauce before even taking into account MJK
maynard's voice is geat.
Have you seen/heard Maynard singing with Tori Amos? Definitely check it out if not.
Nooooo! Gonna find that asap!
"Muhammad my friend" - while at it, also check out Trent and Tori "past the mission"
Oh it is sooo good.
Yup... This is the one. Anyone who can listen to this... ANYONE... without biting their lip... I just dunno...
That song is definitely about the state of addiction only the greatest of dependents can inhabit.
I think it's about seggsytime
@@iximusic 100 percent about getting rocked in the back of a pinto lol
Being adicted to getting rocked in the back of a pinto? O.o
It’s interesting to me that when you play along with piano, it sounds so much like a NIN song. But I don’t get that vibe with the recorded version.
Will you do something about Elliott Smith ?
He has a song with rage against the machine..check it out
"We all know what you're talking about " lol
Похоже по стилю на идеальный круг.
Can't blame him for simply getting older and less angry, but man I do miss young Maynards voice - truly unlike any other.
why are there no single tracks from MUSE in your repertoire? do you know MUSE? i still think its one of the greatest bands in the world.
i recommend "space dementia" and "butterflies and hurricanes" if you're into piano! cheers from germany!
I never got into Muse much but I did like a few of their hits on the radio - Supermassive Black Hole is great and Starlight is beautiful.
@@iximusic well you got just the radio hits.. piano wise they are really worth listening ..
interestingly to mention: their second album wasn't released immediately in the US.. because of Matt's falsetto singing.. the record company wanted to replace his voice.. . weird isn't it?
@@iximusic bliss is another great one for the piano part. Other favourites personally are hysteria and knights of cydonia
I saw something about this song on UA-cam and apparently Maynard wasn't even supposed to sing on this song.
"Passenger" is an extremely erotic song.
I believe Maynard didn’t really like this very much. Or maybe thought it could’ve been done better.
What I’m about to say is going to be the most controversial opinion in the Deftones community lol. But Passenger is my least favorite song on White Pony 🤷. Don’t get me wrong it’s an Amazing song, just not as crazy about it as everyone else.
The beginning sounds like the start of Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf. Also, I hear some Led Zeppelin bouncing around in there.
