One of the best descriptions I heard of Tool is "4 musicians at the height of their craft and we're lucky enough that they happen to all be in the same band"
Zeppelin
@@familiarsting4108 Tool is really good live though.
@@familiarsting4108 amen!
@@johnnyb6067 I’ve seen them 5 times! Amazing every time.
@@johnnyb6067 my point was that Zeppelin and Tool are both amazing 4-piece bands . And display same level of musicianship and creativity
I love how her plants are swaying to the beat of the song! It's like they're rocking out!
Plants have feelings too and they agree that this is a great experience.
Nope your are just high lol
Its because the songs beat is the beat of the universe. The rhythm of this song goes with anything and everything in life. No matter the emotion no matter what youre going through, this song grabs your soul and pulls
Rofl has exact same thought
This song is maybe the most important song in my life. I cannot tell you how many times ive been in such a low dark place and this song pulled me out. Its so hard to listen to tool now for me because its such a rollercoaster of emotion. The song plays and im bombarded with flashes of scenes of my life. Like from a movie. My life flashes before my eyes and instead of dying, im more alive than before.
Not sure if this would even help but ....Not medical advise by you might want try EFT Tapping while you are listening to the song to lift the blockages of what you call "a rollercoaster" EFT comforts your body while doing things are uncomfortable - neutralizing the disturbance for many people. UA-cam has plenty of EFT Tapping Videos.
Swing on a spiral of our Divinity, and still be human!
"Oh that chord...flat six! Sorry.."
Lol... Don't apologize, that moment gets me every time. I love how they play that right as Maynard sings the words "feel inspired.." That's some grade A word painting right there!
This album has spoken to me so profoundly like few others have (like The Downward Spiral and Amnesiac). The last 3 songs alone can change someone's life.
I’m more of a Kid A person myself, but all three of those albums are amazing.
@@Someone-hv7tv I love Kid A but on Amnesiac that feeling of isolation goes up to a bone chilling level. For me.
Biblical
Yesssss more Tool goodness. Rick Beato just put out his interview with Maynard yesterday, it was awesome. Now we get Ixi going over Lateralus? Hell yes.
The audio on that interview video is cursed lol - Great interview, though.
@@Atodaso ? Audio was fine
Where the hell was this channel hiding in youtube???? The algorythm sucks, this is absolutely amazing!
This song still gives me chills 20 years after hearing it for the first time. Hands down my favourite Tool song.
A tool breakdown is not for the weak or powerless. Truly amazing Love the theory without it feeling like a foreign language lesson. keep being awesome
Like Like Like Like Like Like Like... please do more of these. I will spend hours with you and Tool.
The most nuanced dissection of a tool song I have ever.
25:03 - on their next record, the second track is called "JAMBI". :)
I like how the plant on the left tried to keep up with the rhythm hehe 🌱
😊
I’m speechless. This analysis, like so many of your others, is just so damn good. I appreciate your dissection of rhythms and vocal Melodies, which I struggle with. These illuminated areas reinvigorate my enthusiasm for songs that haven’t hit me in that special way in years. This really is such a special song (and entire record) not even to touch on its lyrical content. This is the fruit of a great band at its greatest. Again, thank you for shining a light on all of these special little moments. It has me inspired all over again.
The maj9 comes off like an earnest inquiry.
Watching you do other tool songs was like hanging on the 3rd and raised 6th. Doing this song is like hitting the tonic. Been waiting for months, thank you!
24:50 Tool has an amazing song on 10,000 days called Jambi. You should check it out 🙂
Came here to say the same. Meka leka hi meka hiney ho.
How about ixi making an analysis video on Jambi, to educate both herself and her audience (including myself 😉)? I’ll be happy to see that video 🤟🏻
Me too
Lateralus Lyrics and The Fibonacci Sequence
Maynard structured and sung the lyrics using the first 7(1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13) numbers in the Fibonacci Sequence. Each number in the sequence denotes the amount of syllable(s) he sings before he adds a slight pause in his phrasing to (indicate/separate) the movement to the next number in sequence. The full pattern can be seen at the end.
(Please feel free to let me know if any mistakes or if I missed anything - I'll edit/update the post)
Section 1
[Verse 1]
Black - 1
Then - 1
White are - 2
All I see - 3
In my infancy - 5
Red and yellow then came to be - 8
Reaching out to me - 5
Lets me see - 3
[Pre-Chorus - He jumps straight to 13 breaking the pattern, making the first verse seem "incomplete"]
As below so above and beyond I imagine - 13
Drawn beyond the lines of reason - 8
Push the envelope - 5
Watch it bend - 3
Chorus and Post Chorus don't use the sequence
Section 2
[Verse 1 Repeated]

White are - 2
All I see - 3
In my infancy - 5
Red and yellow then came to be - 8
Reaching out to me - 5
Lets me see - 3
[Verse 2 - this "completes" the piece of the pattern that section 1 one was missing between V1 and the Pre-Chorus)
There is - 2

Been on a huge TOOL kick lately -- this video is phenomenally timed 🌀
spiral outtttt
Me too! 10,000 days and Ænima all the way!
The part at 39:55 Danny is playing in 5 (referencing the verse time signature) while the bass and guitar play in 6 (or 4 if you prefer). One of my favorite grooves ever! Thanks for the video!
Wonderful thing to do for your friend who is facing some tough times. Sending you both some love and good vibes
Also this song was initially called 987 because the chorus alternates between 9/8, 8/8 and 7/8 and the number 987 is also present in the fibonacci sequence
With my feet upon the ground
I lose myself between the sounds
And open wide to suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin.
Great analysis! *Subbed! I have always felt that the heart beat/pulse buildup at the beginning is like being in the womb. When the song drops into the opening riff, it's like being born 🙂
Jambi is a Tool song. And it’s a banger
Great video as always! Jambi is a thing. Jambi is the name of the genie in the 80's Pee-wee's Playhouse. He would grant wishes by saying "Mecca lecca hi, mecca hiney ho!"
It's also a Tool song.
It's also wold famous jelly sculpture of the famous Disney fawn and her mother...
It's also a place in Indonesia.
Thank you ixi!
It’s pure Tool!
The rocking back and forth is something I do all the time when jamming to this song
you nailed a lot of what this song is, its a song made ENTIRELY around the Fibonacci Sequence, from the beat, the time signature, and the lyrics. Maynard wrote the lyrics so that the syllables follow the sequence. It's honestly one of their most ambitious and insanely complex songs they've ever made.
Come on, do the whole album like you did it with Aenima... I would watch you for a whole day honestly... You are amazing!
Even with songs that I know very well, your discussions of them always heighten my appreciation to the point where I feel like I'm hearing it for the first time again. What a priceless gift to provide people 🖤
I think I’ve watched all the breakdowns and reactions to this song. This is by far my favourite. You’ve captured the feeling in almost every note and somehow explained it to someone who knows nothing about music.
I know I love music. I know what songs I like but you’ve just explained to me why I like it. Thank you!
If y’all didn’t see them live when this album came out… I’m sorry. 🥺
Absolute masterpiece. Musically, Lyrically, and the timing. Mozarts of the late 20th century and early 21st century.
GD. I just watched an hour long breakdown of a song, and similar to most Tool songs, the time just flew by. That was a fantastic breakdown of a very complex song and I enjoyed every minute of it!! Keep Going,...
You had a single pedal of a plant rocking out to the whole song on the left hand side.
I freaking love you dude.. This is the best technicAl breakdown of lateralus that I've ever heard.thank you. Ill be watching this for the next few months because I m a dum dum
Don't over think it. See a ixi video, click it, and watch it. 🙏
Watching Tool reactions gives me life
What an enjoyable breakdown of one of my favorite songs of all time.
AHHHHHH YES! My favorite Tool album, thank you!!!
So I'm only about 2/3rds through but what I'm already realizing is how desperately the world needs a piano solo arrangement of this song...
i'm 1 minute into the breakdown and you're talking about how the guitars are setting the meter - it's a brilliant observation and one i've never considered, as a fan since skipping class to buy this cd on the day it came out
You need to know that your looks made me look at your video. But your talent and explanation made me realize how good of a musician you must be. So lucky to have stumbled upon you... Thank you
39:48 : "This." Pretty much says it all, right there, in one word. Brilliant breakdown/reaction to a brilliant song/masterpiece. Thanks for doing this! (The video, not saying the word "this," at "that moment" in the song. The "this" moment.)
Excellent breakdown of Tool! Please continue.
Ixi and TooL......for some of us this couldn't get any better!!! Thanks Ix.....you are absolutely brilliant!
I love your videos, i've watch'em all !!
One of my favorite channels on youtube
A big big hug from Chile ! 🥰🥰🥰
"Okay i think this drum part coming up is like incredible, oh yeah"
literally every drum part
Thank you for your video it’s spot on. Tool is magical and I still shiver in the act 3 of this song
God you are good at this. Everyone who watches your videos is a musician, even if only at home. We all understand time signatures, scales, etc. And like listening to Bach or any of a number of other greats, getting to speak/listen to music discussion at this level is pretty much the original promise of the value of the internet. Thank you for uploading this. Sincerely.
Uh, not all of us. Some of us just watch videos such as these to better understand - at least superficially, in theory, and using technical terms we don't fully grasp - why we like the things we like.
At 7:40 of this video the effect being used was a Digitech Bass Whammy Pedal to achieve that part that you enjoyed so much. Justin uses it a lot. It is the Bass version of the same pedal that guitarist Tom Morrello from Rage Against The Machine popularized.
I need all of the songs this in-depth.
I just ran across this video. Honestly, it was your face that made me stop but I was stunned at what your analysis was. It was like watching a chef make a meal in reverse to show you why each item tastes as it does. Great stuff. Subbed.
Yes, I was just thinking of Ixi and Tool, and you posted. Thanks!
That's the best decomposition I've ever seen, makes me love this song even more. Thank you!
I love your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us all!
Awesome Ixi! This is one of my favorite songs. I can’t imagine trying to break down this track myself and I think you did a really good job. Thank you. 😀
"the enchanting mystery"
Love it ixy!
I love this breakdown, thank you ixi you rule
I've been waiting for you to do tool for so long lets goo
I’ve been waiting for this one, thank you so much!! Any more tool breakdowns from you are welcomed. Love how your cameras focus was struggling so hard with the raw hand motions, like what the hell is this girl doing! 😆
I love how the plants are slowly taking over the studio x
subbed for this awesome breakdown!
loved it, nice contrast to the other videos on youtube on lateralus. since all other analysis seem to be mostly math, overthinking, overanalsying and without a lot of feeling (or none at all)
Thank you! My favorite band reacted to/analyzed by my favorite reviewer/music analyst/teacher. Keep Spiraling Out...
OF COURSE the most beautiful moment in the entire song is a flat six
Loved this video! I can feel those things in the song but someone smart enough to hear it musically and explain it is very satisfying! 👍😃
Your piano playing abilities and musicianship are superb. I was so hoping to hear a piano rendition of the song that put all your snippet pieces together. You also have an amazing voice. Great analysis.
Thanks for doing this. This is awesome!
one of my favorite songs of all time! saw the length is about an hour long and was like 'ooo girl, that's about how long it would take, can't wait to dive in!'
Just brilliant!!!! Thank you
When i heard you describe the breakdown of the emotion of the song....tou changed the way i hear music. Ty.
Wow, just wow. That was so interesting to watch, I feel you could go over another and still find plenty of ideas to discuss. Also, I love how one of the main ideas in the lyrics is about "overthinking and overanalyzing, separates the body from the mind" and they pack this idea into such a complex and "overthought" song, so clever.
I’m immediately in love with this channel!!!!
:)
Thanks for taking the time, really enjoyed it. So many Tool songs that do not resolve, this end is super satisfying. (...pass the peanut butter...lol)
Just discovered you with this analysis. Thank you. It was very well done. Would love to see more tool analysis from you. Also the glasses are great.
You're in luck. She has done several.. check the channel.
Yup, you have your shit together young lady. Thank you.
Jambi is one of their greatest songs off of 10,000 days! It's funny you heard it like that
Easily the best breakdown ever thanks ❤
Great video. Very well done.
The Patient is one of my favorites off Lateralus too.
This is such an incredible breakdown ❤️
You are amazing!
New subscriber here for sure 😁😁
I really enjoyed your analysis. Your interpretation of the time signature changes is very intuitive and helpful for musicians to know.
The "octave sound" you were talking about and the end, I don't know exactly what gear Adam plays it with, but I don't use any effect pedals other than distortion and I play it using pinch harmonics with my pick and thumb pinching the string which makes every note ring an octave higher. It sounds pretty much the same so he might be doing that, and probably definitely doing it that live.
Also, Keep Austin Weird 🤘
you listen through the entire piece before you start to react. That's unique because most channels pause so much to make the youtube algorithm not recognize the song.
I love it, and I'm really excited to hear what you have to say about a song like this after you have let the whole thing play!!!!
I do that when a) time allows and b) the publisher will allow me to do it without blocking my video. But I usually do have to cut it up unfortunately. For this one, I knew that Tool fans' concept of time is different and y'all would definitely watch a 50 minute video about 1 song. :D
Boomer drummer here. Just found the channel. Late to the Tool party. Like last year late. Don't ask. Thanks UA-cam algo.
Liked and subbed.
People that appreciate tool this much are a blessing ❤️
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.. this has made my day:)
25:42 when you mentioned he came in after, that's how the band operates to make the music. Danny Justin and especially Adam spend sometimes years constructing the meat of the song, then give it to Maynard to riff and make the lyrical melody.
You're really good... I like your stlye.... very informative as well... great job!
Ixi making the pieces fit 🥰
Really great, don't know how you managed to do that in only fifty minutes
49:35 the octave you're talking about is a pinch harmonic.
The act of striking the string with the pick and ALMOST simultaneously - but barely- the pad of the thumb, on the downward attack... gives me the chills everytime
this is one of those youtube channels where I'm like, "darn, only 52 minutes?" ;)
haha love that :)
I’m pretty sure they used the Fibonacci sequence for the time signatures throughout this entire album. I also recall when the Fibonacci sequence is graphed out it creates a spiral pattern. Fitting right?
The Jambi thing cracked me the fuck up.
I really like what you do. Bravo.
Thanks for this.
I once got booted from a band for sounding too much like MJK. It was the best firing I ever received.
😮
