- You can blame Kirk for my fascination with everything Maynard James Keenan (and Danny Carey). He listens to so much Tool, that be falling in love with their sound was inevitable. The first time I heard passenger I listened to this song like 13 times in a row. Chino and Maynard absolutely killed it. Their voices work very well together and if you weren’t familiar with one already, you might not even know it’s two people.

I listened 15 times… geniuses!
Deftones are the masters of using air and space in songs. This, to me, is what makes them so absolutely heavy. No other band can kill you equally with a feather and a sledgehammer. This entire album is a masterpiece. Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan are close, but White Pony is a complete work of art.
That's a very interesting way of looking at them. Thank you. They aren't afraid of letting a moment breath. Never is the songs intensity going to be less than what it needs?

Seriously the feather, sledgehammer line is perfect! Gotta say for me Koi No Yokan takes the cake for the airy spacey atmosphere though.
Change in the house of flies was life changing for me as a teenager. It still gives me shivers and goosebumps whenever I hear it. Amazing band.
That's Kirks favorite, so I know it's coming.
@@TheCharismaticVoice admittedly I'm not a huge fan of Deftones, but I think the acoustic version of CItHoF is one of the most intriguing songs I've ever heard. I get the sense that you'd really like the intimate atmosphere and the texture of Chino's vocals, so even if you don't do a video on it I still HIGHLY recommend giving that version a listen after you check the original.

Interestingly enough, Deftones are actually an older group than both Tool and A Perfect Circle. I think it would be most accurate to say that Maynard and Chino both evolved their vocal styles in parallel and influenced each other pretty heavily.

I think Deftones first album adrenaline came out in 95,tools first album undertow came out in 93. They definitely have a similar style 2 of my favorites. Makes sense perfect circle sounds like them since it is also Maynard. You should check out pucifer. It's Maynard singing with electronic almost dubsteppy rock music behind him.

The horny factor of Deftones is frequently overlooked, despite the thirst traps.
Chino is the ghost to Maynard's fallen angel. he's always had an ethereal quality to his voice, even while screeching. Chino also has a signature scream thats really difficult to replicate, because he does it on an INHALE. its nutty to listen to.

Agreed. I didn't appreciate his drumming when this album came out, but his pocket and tasteful chops are worth noting.
Perfect example: he completely changes the second chorus, but switching from that two-handed hi-hat shuffle to straight 2 and 4. It's a higher-level thing most new or even intermediate drummers wouldn't think to do.

The absolute BEST driving song
I used to listen to this song on the radio circa 2000 in Eastern Washington which is desert with vast empty spaces between places to be. The days would be so hot, but then at sunset this cool breeze would rush in while the pavement still radiated heat. That’s the feeling this track captures for me. The cool night air is curious.
Those two vocalists have the capability of taking your mind from your body. Just mesmerizing.
Maynard is arguably the greatest vocalist all time. And Chino is great in his own right.
My Own Summer is a must check for Deftones. It's creepy as all hell, it's so unique and it'll give you shivers. Deftones have always been so atmospheric, definitely not putting pure 'musicianship' as their niche but more what kind of feelings and atmospheres they can create. They've influenced so many bands as a result. Change and Digital Bath are easy to appreciate in that respect too. An acquired taste band, but a very important one in modern music history imo.
EDIT: Just as a caveat about this song as well (in case you might not be convinced enough to check out more Deftones in the future ;) ) this
song didn't just feature Maynard on vocals or have him help in the songwriting, he helped write the entire music structure of the song which, as you know from listening to so much Tool, is highly mathematical and structured, hence why this song as a whole is so reminiscent of Tool, but it's not the most representative of what Deftones were all about, it was more like an 'experimental approach' for them and their writing process was always more chaotic which reflected in their music too. Awesome as this song is, this is definitely not where Deftones starts or ends, there really is so much more for you to see!
I'll keep this in mind! I really want to go down a Deftones rabbit hole!

This song isn't just sexual, but it's sensual in general. The references compare feelings of passion with getting high. Even the references of "Passenger" are dually in reference to a revisited experience, something that is there with you as you drive. I think it's important to note that Chino's distortion is insane because of the previous damage he did sustain to his vocal chords during a live performance. It's amazing he can sing at all. I was there when he almost lost his voice forever. The song was "My Own Summer." He slipped during a performance and that song is already just riding a razor's edge of damaging himself. I recommend listening to it... for science.
If you put a gun to my head and said “you can only listen to one band for the rest of your life” I think I’d have to pick Deftones. The band has this resonance in their music that mimics sex and there’s no way it’s a coincidence. Really brilliant and underrated.
And I would choose tool. But I completely understand why you would choose the one you have chosen.

Elizabeth, you simply MUST listen to "Knife Prty" from this same album, which also features a guest vocalist, Rodleen, who performs a wordless vocal solo which will take your breath away and have you staring at your screen in amazement! And as others have said, Chino is a unique and extremely talented vocalist and I'm thrilled you're starting to discover him and Deftones.
The high notes from that guest vocalist really gave me shivers. On the piano, she hits -- I think it's C6 or D6. Incredible.

If this song evoked one single word for me it would be “lust”. They do such a fantastic job of really emoting the scene of two people riding in a car in the cold night and they pull over and lean into the feelings of lust pulling them together. It’s so oozy and icy and intimate and close. Just so perfectly orchestrated 🖤

I am super jealous you are just hearing this for the first time!! My two favorite male voices magically juxtaposed to make the most intense emotional reaction that is true to the subject matter of the song - they make you feel like you are actually having sex in a car when you listen to it. Pure genius and I’m glad you enjoyed it!
As an old man who first picked up Adrenalin in 1998 as a 14 year old kid then immediately went and bought around the fur, it’s so great seeing their music make a resurgence and in 2023 someone talking so passionately about an track from 2000 is awesome.
Chino's and Maynard's voices are like so well suited for this song. It's so incredible.

My joke answer would be The One Where Chino Screams For Nine Straight Seconds In The Outro, because I just cannot pick a real answer. Knife Prty is a vocal masterpiece, Entombed is the one that even Deftones haters still love, Tempest or Rosemary or Risk are all personal favourites, Rocket Skates is an amazing hard weird love song. I could go on and on.

When this album came out my friends and I were soooooo excited that they did a song with maynard....ironically enough listening to it years later it feels like an expression of the way we lived. So fearless and in love with cruising the nights playing all our favorite music. Will always have a spot in my heart.

Still to this day. Def tones and this album hit a button in my brain that makes me so relaxed and sleepy. For many years I would put Def tones on low volume and fall asleep it was how I fell asleep. YES FINALLY DEFTONES! If you want more of Chino Moreno, also checkout Crosses, his softer, synth-rock side project. The hard edge of Deftones comes from the lead guitarist Stephen Carpenter, while the shoe gaze, electronic, and synth pop influences come from Chino. The balance of the two are what makes Deftones so unique.
I would recommend she take a further step back and start with Team Sleep before Crosses.
I'm just diving into Chino's vocals, but I am sure we'll get around to side projects soon!
Crosses is a must!! ... for more Deftones then Rosemary or Minerva would be good options.

Ironically I just stumbled upon Crosses. Now I need to do a deep dive. The cover of "One More Try" is Top notch. I couldn't tell the difference from the original.

There are often cool "call & response" sections between two guitars in rock. They always grab my attention. However it's not often that you hear two vocalists deliver such a cool call and response with such distinct, yet similar voices. Also arranged with such a brilliantly intentional difference in the space they occupy throughout the verses.
Deftones .. that band and especially Around the Fur and White Pony defined my teenage years immensely. Only 2001 Tool stepped into my universe. :-)
YES you're finally reacting to Deftones, One of my personal favorite bands. I'm excited to hear your reaction and thoughts on the vocalist Chino.
Deftones was actually formed a few years before Tool. I have no doubt they influenced each other in some way, but probably not as heavily as it sounds. Deftones was born out of a somewhat different genre than Tool's predecessors. (Deftones was a little more Punk heavy, although both were very unique and experimental at the time)

That being said though, a lot of opinions I'm seeing about this seem to be coming from the angle that influence only ever happens in a band's formative years or moments! People needing to cite which band formed first or which band put out an album first as an argument is a strange take full stop! In reality new influence can be found at any point, more's the pity because these professional so called 'influencers' of this day and age are really irritating!
Both of their voices are so amazing and unique and they complement each other so amazingly well that - when i heard this for the first time - i thought it was the same person singing!

DEFTONES are an amazing band, and Chino is one of the most underrated vocalists ever. I highly recommend listening to "Minerva" or "Rosemary"

It just makes sense to dive into Deftones after getting obsessed with Tool or the other way around. These two are vocal icons, quite literally there's no one that can do what they do.
My 2 Favorite Bands then Primus and now Puscifer after a decade of refusing to accept Maynard touring with another band besides Tool. My loss! KING MAYNARD 👑

White Pony is one the greatest albums of all time. The seamless blending of styles into an atmosphere of sex charged violence is true art. Diamond Eyes is epic as well. You've Seen the Butcher, Sextape, and the title track Diamond Eyes are just amazing.

I got into Deftones back when the Matrix came out, Diamond Eyes is my second favorite album of theirs, after White Pony.

White pony defined a whole generation. Fantastic album to get lost into. Definitely recommend Knife Prty just for that intense musical interlude.

It took you til the last second of the song to finally say the word that describes Deftones for me. "Haunting" There's no other band that makes me feel like they do. If you have never seen them live, they are just as mesmerizing. You will leave so wrung out . Absolutely the most amazing band.
I was a freshmen when this came out and has been one of my favorite songs since the first time I heard it. I love seeing so many people come around to the music I've loved for so long..... So many nights riding dirt roads rolling on x listening to this. I saw them live at the warped tour in Jacksonville in 98' right after around the fur came out.
Dude same, saw them at the warped tour that year at a very remote area in Oregon in the woods called the Timber Bowl. Mostly Ska and Punk and when they came on it was like the place got set on fire it was so aggressive. People ran, my gf at the time put her head between her legs to muffle the sound. My friend and I were freaking diggin it. Chino was running around spitting fire and Stephen as always was metal af lol. Great freaking time.
Chino Moreno is one of my favorite vocalists ever. The way he can elicit such emotion with his voice is unbelievable. He has a way of going from soft, breathy sounds to intense, aggressive screams with ease and it's amazing. Deftones have perfected the art of making beautiful, chaotic music that is ethereal and haunting while still being heavy. Highly recommend checking out more of their music, this song is barely scratching the surface of what Chino can do.

Her "Whoa" was the exact sound my brain made when I heard Deftones as a kid and is why I am absolutely still in love with them! The emotion Chino captures and the other members way of capturing that same emotion within their instruments just brings you to your knees!

This song is my all time favourite, it blew me away from the very first listen back when it came out. Hearing the White Pony album for the first time was genuinely a formative experience for me, and it somehow still feels fresh and unlike anything else each time I listen to it. I instantly fell in love with both Chino's and Maynard's vocal styles in this track and to this day it leaves me breathless.
I've also never been so delighted to watch someone else's reaction to this song, so thank you and I hope you continue to enjoy discovering Deftones. I'll definitely be here for those videos!
I used to listen to this song SO much when I was younger. Just incredible. I thought of it for the first time in ages just the other day, and was so happy to see you'd done a reaction video. Maynard's voice is so dreamlike in this song. The whole experience is just phenomenal. The song "Rosemary" by Deftones has a similar buildup which almost is euphoric at times. Chino is such a remarkable vocalist and has such an incredible way to make you feel a multitude of emotions simultaneously. I'm so happy you're finally diving in with this song!

Chino can move from brutally harsh to beautifully atmospheric in an instant, and his performances have really matured over time, despite recovering from vocal damage. Hearts/Wires is one of his best vocal performances ever and it was recorded 16 years after White Pony.

This is one of my favourite pieces of music ever, and i think my absolute favourite part of it is how distinct both of their sounds are, and stay. No competing, no swamping, no one trying to fit in with the other.

There is no doubt if you did a dive into some songs off each album it would be very popular. Deftones fans love to watch others hear his range and style for the first time.

Chino has always had a crazy way with using air and finding odd sounds. I’ve seen them live 3 times and they are always amazing.

When you realise this whole song is about 'doing the naughty' in a car (chrome, buckles, and leather surfaces, these and other, lucky witnesses) you realise how talented Deftones are, and the whole song changes, it's a sexy song in reality 😂
Even including the B-Side and Rarities album, Deftones doesn't put out any boring or bad tracks. They're one of the few bands that I can truly put on shuffle for their entire discography and enjoy it.
Their cover of “No Ordinary Love” is one of my favorite songs.
I loved their version of Simple Man by Skynyrd. It was released at the same time as Shinedown's version and was completely overshadowed, thus pulled from radio circulation.
This is one of the greatest albums of all time. The melodic choices Chino makes as his sort of trademark style are so interesting. Lots of dissonance and upper extensions like 9ths.
So glad you chose this song. It's amazing. There are so many great things about it, all brought together into one great song. My only complaint about this song has always been that I wish it lasted longer. It's one of those I wish would go forever.

This song is just one of the most intriguing and beautiful duets in the genre. When you love both Tool and Deftones it is a true gift for fans.
I always classified this as a experience more than music. The song grabs you from the start and takes you on a roller coaster of emotion and feelings. I've listened to this in the dark with headphones and it felt like the melody of the music controlled my pulse rate. The most under rated and over looked song. It deserves to be spread to the masses.
The hypnotic composition of the Deftones music is why they’re one of my favorites and I believe they’re highly underrated as an early late 90s-2000s band and their role in introducing the nu metal vibe that came to the scene.
It’s funny knowing this song word for word and watching her talk about Maynard holding back his intensity and me just sitting here waiting for her reaction to the chorus when he lets it out.

Lets just say theres never been a more isolated by fanbase controversial songs in any music communities ever. There were so many insinuations regarding what the song was about and who was doing what to whom haha! The vocals were just so originally sang, much intensity and sexiness only the deftones can provide. Just little 15 yr old me living to hear "roll the window down..."

MJK is amazing! I love his vocal range. His more melodic voice like at the end of Aenima when he sings "I'm praying for rain" is so beautiful. He's also the only one I've seen do justice to Layne Staley's vocals in Man in the Box.
Deftones' first three albums are a helluva run for a band, especially in the 1990s: Adrenaline, Around the Fur, and White Pony. There are so many songs just from those albums that would keep you busy for days
Also RIP Chi Cheng the bassist he was such a force and an important key to the Deftones' sound
