  • A faulty Hikvision IP security camera bought from eBay for spares or repair.
It was advertised as having no power and is completely dead.
Is it repairable? let's find out!

Well this is surreal that was actually my listing.
I thought it was a bad cable to be fair because it stopped working shortly after moving it and it was installed on a base unit that had limited room or the large HDMI end of this camera.
But not sure how the chip got fried. ABSecure is my small business doing CCTV stuff. While I have stopped fitting Hikvision this was the only camera to go faulty over last 5 years so their decent enough

The Hikvision stuff is mostly very reliable and well built. I like the features and the ui of the DVRs. You get a lot for your money. I would never install a camera inside my rooms, no matter which brand. 😊

Yes, agree to all points. I've just bought a 16CH DVR advertised as spares or repair, so I'll be doing a video on that at some point.

I do a bit of work for a local CCTV company, both residential and commercial. We won’t install anything except Hik unless a customer specifically requests a manufacturer. The IP cameras do take a minute or 2 to boot up, I believe it’s due to it having to negotiate an IP address via DHCP, if there is no DHCP server (or router to issue address) then it can take a little longer as it broadcasts more than once over the network awaiting a response. They are great cameras. As for the issues relating to the Chinese spying, if they want to watch what happens in my backyard then good on them 😂

Nice 👍I've got 8 cameras up. I actually had one of my own cameras fail about a year ago before I started doing videos and it was a shorted capacitor on the board, been fine since.

They have backdoors that allow remote code execution, poor security, and are often used as botnet nodes. I do industrial CCTV, and avoid Hik/Dahua. They also have shit housing seal tolerances and get waterlogged after a few years.

The company I work with have been installing them for longer then me and I’ve been using them for approx 8 years, neither of us ever had an issue with water ingress. Maybe we have been lucky 😊

HiKvision is on the banned items list. But good news! There is a way for you to get basically the same camera without the spyware! Hikvision is copying the cameras made by truvision, a american company with roots back to GE. Its funny to see how they copy down to the design of the plastic shield taken off in this video. Even the software is almost looking the same. I have wanted to buy one of these and try uploading the firmware from an TruVision camera - since they are copied down to the smallest of components anyways.

What does the chip you replaced actually do? PoE is usually 48V so is it a controller for the DC DC buck converter that provides 12V?

I have 5 Hikvisions of various models installed for video surveilance. So far, they have been very reliable as cameras. Hikvision's software is garbage though. I use Blue Iris as an NVR instead.
I wonder what could have caused the PoE power chip to die. My guess it was likely some kind of power surge.

I've got the automatic gearbox pulled out of my car currently to do the crankshaft oil seal and also had to go to the hospital a few times (still ongoing), because I seem to have developed kidney stones. Name IEEE Standard Max. Power per Port
    PoE IEEE 802.3af 15.4 W
    PoE+ IEEE 802.3at 30 W
    PoE++ IEEE 802.3bt (Type 3) 60 W

Nice work. Congraz. I am retired senior electronic maintenance engineer and have done this same in a large TV broadcasting company since the 80’s when Ampex-Nagra made 2” video tape recorder VPR-5 😍and it had SMD components. Today’s service persons don’t want or can do this kind of things which is a pity as EU is going to launch a law that electronics must be serviceable. And who’s going to fix them when nobody cannot even change IC protect fuse.

Thanks, I used to work repairing video games and fruit machines back in the late 80's and always like computers and repairing stuff. I used to fix TVs as a hobby too. I know a bit about hardware and software like when I repaired a solar inverter (video on here) and then I needed a service password to adjust a setting and the company said it's an obsolete model and buy a new one. I didn't give up as I had already repaired it! So I reverse engineered their software and worked out how to generate passwords myself 😂😂😂 I did a video on that too 👍
