Portable Medical Ultrasound Scanner - Teardown + Fix + Upgrade!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- I bought a Portable Medical Ultrasound Scanner (Bladder Scanner) to try and re-purpose for scanning a few of our sheep. The unit wasn't broken, but it did have a small fault which I do end up repairing. Let's take it apart, see what's inside, poke around at the software and see what hidden secrets it contains!!
Warning: This video may contain demons!

I wouldn't fancy that probe for use in prostate mode. Yikes! "How's it looking, doc?" "I'm afraid you're Doomed"
Omg I'm dying ... Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
OOPPPS!!!@
To scan the prostate, conductive gel is applied below the navel and slid on your lower quadrant stomach. It is not internal (Thankfully)
reminds me of my days in desktop support when we had to figure this stuff out. heh. excellent job on unlocking that. nowadays i spend more time writing this stuff for web apps
Thanks j s. I've always like to know how things work.. sometimes that includes software too.
A man with these skills pulling out a Fluke 179 (my first decent DMM and quite my favorite) to make measurements certainly is a man after my own heart! Intriguing and fun channel not to mention the most pleasant and "listenable' accent ever! Bravo!
Thanks John! I know I've got quite a strong a 'Geordie' accent so when I started doing videos I wasn't sure if people would like or dislike it. I used to use a fluke 77 (still own that and a 73) which is on a lot of my earlier videos. I upgraded to the 179 earlier this year as saw a used one on Ebay for a reasonable price. Thanks again for your feedback, much appreciated 👍
Vince will have to buy a broken MRI to beat this.... Great video mate.
Thanks James!
Hah, of course it runs doom! It looks like the stock CF card is running Windows XP Embedded, a stripped down version of the OS intended for applications like this. Geode processors and card-computer modules like that are fairly common in embedded applications for industrial and commercial systems. They're low on power draw but offer good computing power for non-computer devices like handhelds and whatnot. I used to have an IBM thinclient that had a Geode processor in it and it ran Linux natively on a 64MB CF card.
Yes, it was a lot easier running doom on this, than having to cross compile it, write an SDL layer and reverse engineer display and input drivers like I did on the innotab and LeapTV a good few years back (video's are on here too).
that 2032 may well be rechargeable type - double check the numbers AND letters carefully!!! be ok to test but if you leave a standard cr2032 in place of a rechargeable mr 2032 - you are in for an explosion or fire! (ask me how i know 🙈)
😂😂😂👍Thanks for the tip 🙂
Hahaha its not finished until you make it run Doom :) A friend and I got doom running on an ATM, and a POS terminal.
Nice! I've managed to get doom running on a few different devices over the years. This one was easy. On other devices I had to reverse engineer control inputs and display drivers and cross compile for different processors. It was a bit of a task!
This is brilliant.
Are there any other UA-camr you know who does hardware and software reverse-engineering like that?
Thanks 👍I'm not too sure, I'd guess so. I've dabbled with repurposing things for quite some time 🙂👍
There are many reverse engineering / pen-test channels that do reverse engineering with stuff like ghidra, and quite a few that do hardware teardown/repair. But channels like this that do electronics repair but then suddenly drop into low level software debugging when appropriate is rare…
Check out a channel called Mikes electric stuff, he's got a few videos where he does stuff like reverse engineering the password to a baggage xray machine or takes apart old medical devices
@@Adam_151Thanks!
went for a testicular scan once. they absolutely swamped my bits with gel and then left the room handing me a single green paper towel. i was halfway through wiping myself off when the doors burst open and in walks a nurse with a young couple. they got the full frontal spread to full effect. nurse appologised, pushed them out and ran off embarrased 😂 i nearly went doom mode at the end.
😂😂😂😂Thanks for sharing 👍
@ 33:30 I said to my self out loud " He's gonna load Doom isn't he.." Well done sir well done
Thanks 😊👍
Yes it’s X86 AMD cpu
Hot glue is a poor adhesive .. you’d be better off using double sticky back industrial mounting tape.
Thanks for the tip David 👍
As soon as i saw the cursor on the screen, i recognised it running some version of windows OS and from that point on i wondered if it could run doom, and you sir did not disappoint at all 😂😂
Also, did you find what the Bluetooth module was used for? Remote scanning? Image transfer?
Thanks 👍I did find out what the Bluetooth was for but I'm trying to remember. I think it was for some add-on device that the company made possibly to measure flow rate 😂
Sir, I will need to do more testing. Your bladder looks like a revolver. Oh, never mind, it was in gaming mode.
😂😂😂😂😂👍Your bladder is doomed 🙂
Why does a millwaukee drill have a backup battery?
It's for the onekey BLE module to enable and track the tool. Some of the tools have this as an added security measure a bit like DRM in case the tool gets lost or stolen, or to stop unauthorized use.
Thanks for the mention on Twitter Mike! I've watched some of your tear down videos before 👍👍👍
that's so amazing, i liked the tear down on the hardware and the software level, and you earned a new subscriber. 🎀
Thanks Chun-Li 👍👍

UFDTech did qshort video about you
I wasn't sure what you meant but I did a search and came across the short that he did about the scanner. Thanks for the heads up! 👍
You could say that that scanner is doomed... *crickets*
😂😂😂😂👍
That Nicad battery pack likely is still good. They probably will charge up if the machine is left plugged in for 16 hours or so unless some of the cells have an internal short. If they do zap each shorted cell with two or 3 times the voltage it usually runs at for a few seconds at a time until it shows some voltage output. Then charge normally. I have Nicad batteries that have been used for 10 years or more as long as they don't leak.
They do charge, I've left it on overnight however they battery life doesn't seen great (30 minutes or so).
I think it's worth a couple grand now.
Thanks👍I've used it to scan the sheep and a friends dog who was pregnant, although it's quite hard to interpret what you see on the screen. I did see little spines with the sheep, but the dog it was all like black circles.
The cherry on top would have been scanning your sheep!
Thanks 👍Unfortunately they weren't pregnant at the time..
haha wouldt that be funny girl all giggly "soo is it a boy or a girl??... you have the whole hell in you" 😂
😂😂😂or a little Demon! 🤣
Bladder image unclear - please try again 🤣🤣
😂😂😂
Very impressive! Especially the password detection. Working in the web world, looking for a hardcoded plaintext password wouldn't have even occurred to me!
Thanks 👍
These industrial/commercial systems have appalling security levels (or lack of security) it seems. I've been told that each and every fire alarm panel from a certain manufacturer has the same password that can't be changed (and it's something like a two-digit number with two identical digits, like 99).
the beauty of fixing it yourself is the cheap price you can get things for. wonderful job. gorgeous sheep
Thanks j s. Yes saving money has always been a big motivator for me fixing things. I think that's probably the main reason why I've been doing it pretty much all my life. It's also good to be able to help people out when they have a problem. That's one of the reasons why I volunteer at the local repair cafe.
I could listen to you take electronics apart all day. I especially love hearing you say "bladdah scannah". This video could be a drinking game where you have to take a shot every time you say "bladdah" or "scannah", and if you say them both then we would drink a can/bottle of beer. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! 👍👍👍
Pee doom
LOL!
I enjoyed that DOOM bit there at the end...wasn't expecting that. Love your channel, just recently discovered it and going through watching all the videos.
Thanks Patrick, welcome aboard and thank you kindly for the feedback 😊👍
So from what i understand. You ran DOOM on a PISS SCANNER!
Yep, although it can now scan a lot more as I also unlocked a ton of extra features so it's now more of a general ultrasound 🙂
As some one who has used a bladder scanner loads allways use lube jelly and take care of the probe £££ and quite fragile
great video .
Thanks 👍Good advice 🙂
Your software skills are as stellar as your hardware skills. I wonder what your prime career was, sure had to be in addition to farming!
Thanks 👍I used to work in amusement arcades, I've always been interested in computers and electronics, it's been more of a hobby than a career 😂
It looked like the board was perhaps trying to charge that coincell battery since the residual voltage of the old cell was dropping while you measured it. That would not be very healthy for an ordinary CR2032, so perhaps you should install a schottky diode in series with your new battery? Or put a rechargeable one in there.
I thought perhaps it had some residual voltage in it after I removed it as there was no load on it, and measuring it was slowly draining what was left? I don't think PC CMOS batteries are usually rechargeable rechargeable, but this one might be different..
@@BuyitFixit Possibly. But I think the load from the board would have drained it to zero in that case since the impedance of the board would probably be lower than the 1 Mohm impedance of your multimeter.
@mcg6762 you may well be correct 👍
This is proof that if there's a device that can make a video output then it can play Doom
Indeed, although this one was fairly easy. I've ported it to things where I've had to reverse engineer drivers, write code, cross compile etc on devices like the leapfrog TV before :)
@@BuyitFixit One of your next videos should be on trying to put doom on the oldest device that you can find.
You are amazing. ❤

How is it looking doc

Love these little modding videos you do, keep up the great work
Thanks PrawnCocktail 👍
Great video Mick.
Many years ago a work colleague had a sheep farm at Keilder and a couple of us would go and help round up the flock to check to see which ewes were in lamb. The guy doing the scanning used wallpaper paste instead of ultrasound gel!
And yes, I have had my bladder scanned with one of those machines!
Nice one. Keilder isn't too far away from me.
What an awesome video, you have some serious Kung Fu. But can it run Doom ?..Hell yeah it can !. What was Testes, some sort of diagnostic suite ?....cheers.
Thanks 👍😂😂😂 I still dont understand UA-cam. I've done some great fixes in the past on things such as a rotary laser level yet the algorithm seems to just pick certain videos for no reason that makes sense. At least my channel is getting a bit more traction now. Thanks for commenting 👍
hahaha, DOOM 😂
Yes indeed 👍😂😂😂
Just WOW xDD
Thanks 👍🙂
Nurse: "Before we begin the scan, I'd just like to show you some id"
Good one Nathan! 👍
ID software
@@yodinoshere5400 thank you for explaining the joke, i would have never guessed
Assembly language. Comfy place! Been a long time since I did any assembly coding but it's nice that it still looks familiar.
I used to do Assembly back in the day with my C64 and ZX Spectrum, and even when programming PIC chips back in the day. I don't do much now, unless having a poke at the odd executable from time to time such as in this case 🙂
Had this been a video by Matt (Techmoan) he would no doubt have tried to sing 'My way' into the probe.
😂😂😂😂
I used to be an electronics technician for JRC, i think we all own the exact same FLUKE DMM.
I've got a few. I've had the Fluke77 for years (it features on a lot of my earlier videos) and only got the 179 about 6 or 7 months back.
The NHS buying software knobelled hardware, so they have to buy separate ones for each type of scan. Guess we can see where all the money goes.
Possibly, I was thinking was it just to keep it simple for the staff, but it also wouldn't surprise me if you were right 👍
What next calendar
I find the d'ohs jarring :(
Thanks for the feedback. I'll bear that in mind for future videos. Have a great day!
@@BuyitFixit thank you, as silly as it may sound; I like to watch videos like these to fall asleep. Apart from the odd d'oh I really enjoyed your video
Thanks Biggus B 👍
placing battery on a heating chip drains it quickly.
Interesting, I remember warming up flat AA batteries in my pocket as a kid made them spring into life again for a short time...
Looks like it runs a version of windows xp embedded. I wonder if its been custom made to not include explorer and stuff.
It does indeed run XP embedded. I did find a way to run explorer and cmd etc by going into the touch screen calibration part and there is also an option to add printer which let's you browse the file system then you can double tap on explorer or and other applications 🙂
Does it run Doom tho?
Oh it does.
DOOM forever 🤘🤘🤘🤘
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
When you opened up the internal SBC to change the battery, it looked as if there had been some thermal compound between the tin lid and the component you thought might be the graphics chip. I was a little concerned the replacement battery might stop the thermal contact here.
I don't think it sticks up any higher than the original battery, and the lid seems to fit on without any resistance. It's been working fine and I've used it a few times since. I managed to scan our sheep with it and used it on a friends dog a couple of weeks back 😂😂
I was hoping you would put Doom on that thing. Sad that it doesn't play sounds though maybe PC speaker since it has a buzzer?
I think the chipset supports sound but not sure if the larger main PCB has the signals going anywhere. Because I was running in DOS drivers would probably be an issue too.
@@BuyitFixit I ran Doom one time after installing a sound card in my pc without the drivers and the sound effects worked but music didn't. If there is a sound device and amp built in to the board but all it has it that buzzer, maybe connecting a real speaker to it would work.
Interesting. I could hear the screaming, when you called Anna and Ettie, Julia and Juliette, ho, ho. Odd that the calculation notes were on the inside.
Thanks Ralph. They are on the flip up lid, so that's what you were seeing on the inside.
Well it is a Baaaaa Scan perfect for sheep! Love to see the size of the electric cord you'll use to get that out to the paddock unless u fix rechargeable batteries
Baaa scan! Good one Wayne 👍😂😂😂 We would be scanning them in the barn, got power over there so all good 👍
Am late but the chip under the heatsink is the amd cpu and the chip named geode on the back is the companion chip.
Well spotted! Yes I missed that, thanks for pointing it out. The chip I was looking at was the Southbridge (CS5535) and the CPU is indeed under the heatsink on the opposite side of the board.
I am very happy for you mate. It will be helpful for on the farm.👍👍😊😊
Hope so! Thanks 👍
An ultrasound is an ultrasound - you shouldn't have to invoke a different app to look at a bladder or a liver, or a uterus or an ovary. As long as your transducer can make good ultrasonic contact with the skin of the patient (sheep), you should be able to scan her abdomen? Or have you found otherwise?
I would think the same, perhaps it just sticks a label on or interprets some of the data differently? I actually used it a couple of weeks back on or sheep and it looks like we could see a skull and a spine, also tried it on a friends dog about a week ago, we could see round circles which is supposed to be right for the stage she is at.
You will not see inside a skull very well, because there will be too much ultrasound reflection from the side of the skull closest to you. For the same reason, you won't see behind a person or animal's pelvis. But through the abdominal wall, you should with time be able to identify organs that don't contain air (air is a poor conductor of the ultrasound signals you want to see). So bowel and lungs etc won't show, and will get in the way of other organs (like heart) you may wish to see. Thanks for the interesting tear down! @@BuyitFixit
Well done, pure genius to get this unit unlocked.
this is the most nerdy things I've ever seen....

Truly amazing, I love watching your videos and you really have a great sense of humor must say that I chuckled quite a few times.
Thanks Morten👍👍 I do try... glad you enjoyed it. I had finished the video and edited it all, then had the idea of the xbox achievements, so added those in. Thought it would be a nice touch! Hopefully the video will be featuring on the hackaday website soon...
lol thats next level hacking. running Doom on a device. always puts you in a certain tier of computerdom lol
What does it do if you plug in a USB hub with a mouse and keyboard?
In windows xp embedded a keyboard and mouse works, unfortunately I couldn't get any dos drivers to work with the boards chipset when running Doom.
@@BuyitFixit no legacy IO options in the BIOS?
Couldn't get into the bios. I guess there must be some ps2 keyboard connections inside the unit possibly? USB keyboard does nothing when it says press F1 for setup, but it does work when the OS boots.
You are going to create a whole new industry of ultrasound hacking !
Ha! Good one👍😂😂
Say hello to the lambs for me Julia and Juliet or is it Anna and Ettie. Now the patient can play Doom while waiting for their scan results.
Will do, and yes the patient seems Doomed 😂😂🤣🤣

You're very welcome 👍
Two Americans were recently jailed because they performed ultrasound on cattle as a service, accused of "Unlicensed Vet Practice".
Interesting. We are allowed to inject our sheep with antibiotics and painkillers if needed. I think that would probably fall more under what you describe. There are people who do sheep pregnancy scanning here as a business and they are not vets.
Was that the inertia / impact test at 15:15 ? 😂
Yes 😂😂😂
hah dude the Hacked splash screen is brilliant
Yeah but can it run Crisis !? 🤣
You have mentioned low melt solder a few times. When you use it does it combine with the solder on the board and make it easier to remove, clean and re solder components?
Hi Chris, it combines with the original solder to lower the melting temperature to make it easier to remove things as it stays liquid for longer. Especially good for things like HDMI sockets and ICs etc.
@@BuyitFixit Thought that might be the answer. Have a good seasonal fun (bah humbug) and new year. Shame I dont live closer, bet I can find loads of stuff needs fixing 🙂
@@chrisbartlett6022 Thanks Chris. Hope you have a great Christmas too!
That connector on the probe alone is worth the price ya paid
Fun fact, I'm currently at a friends house using the machine to scan their pregnant dog.. I think it's pregnant, it looks like it but I'm no radiologist or whatever you call an ultrasound operator 😂😂😂
That’s amazing!!! I think it’s a sonographer
How will this thing do at (for example) finding a break in an electrical cable or a burnt track inside a multi layer PCB? Lots of other non-meaty uses I can think of but wondering if it is worth getting one.
I'm not so sure it would work for that as you're going to have to cover the board in ultrasound gel for the sound waves to conduct, otherwise you will just get the pattern of lines on the screen due to what I think is the impedance mismatch.
@@BuyitFixit So that would probably be the cover on the transducer. Have you had that in bits? It must be possible as they do use ultrasonic for inspecting welds and other things like that.
Ah right forgot about welds etc. No the probe is all sealed and it would be a destructive tear down to open it up.
@@BuyitFixit Ah, right. No point going down that road. I wonder how it would go with the range finding ultrasonic PCBs you can buy. I don't know the frequency of those.
Food for thought. I shall buy one when one comes along cheap. How many wires to the probe?
Not sure. The machine here does 3.5 and 5 mhz
I hope you've already done it but I would have put some captain tape over that battery box just in case of such as their shielding🤔🤔🙄🙄
Thanks for commenting..I didn't but unless it drops off it should be fine..hopefully 😂
We need more videos on this device maybe try to install windows XP Tablet PC Edition cause it's running a minimal XP installation with the software
And Olso i forgot to mention that it has a PC bios
Thanks Gulp. Yes it's pretty much a PC. I couldn't figure out how to get into the bios as a USB keyboard seems to have no effect when it boots so I think it needs a ps2 keyboard to be connected up "somewhere" but I couldn't see obvious connections inside.
Nice job!
Thanks 🙂👍
What fun!
😂😂😂😂indeed 👍
Cool, now play Bad Apple on it
