I was driving past a skip, and noticed something that looked interesting sat on the top of it!
I felt I had to go and rescue it, and try and save it from the landfill!
Let's see if we can repair and restore it to it's former working self...
This is the Part 2 repairing the console, testing, and commissioning the station!

I found a vaccuum cleaner in the dumpster 6 years ago. It looked pretty new so I had a look. Someone had pulled the power cord too hard and unplugged the spade connectors from the motor. I plugged them back in, and I'm still using it today. It's amazing what people will throw away.
Awesome 👍I used to visit the dump when we lived in the city. The amount of stuff that was working fine that was just thrown away. I've had all kinds of stuff. Things such as petrol lawnmowers where the spark plug just needed cleaned, I even got a gaming PC about 5 years ago which had the PSU and GPU missing, but it was a republic of games MB with 6GB corsair ram, and an liquid cooled I7 processor. Still works today 😂😂

A solution to fix the SHT unobtainium is to fake the LSS (Legacy Sensibus) though an interfacing microcontroller which converts between the protocols (the modern sensor and the old LSS).
Yes, I had thought about that. I'd have probably went down that route if they were unavailable.

In july I bought a defective but complete 2003 Davis Vantage Pro Wireless 6310/6320 for cheap, which I ended restoring and upgrading to a Vantage Pro2.
Had 2 reed switch failure (the anemometer one and the rain gauge one, which I fixed and they now work perfectly) but sadly the ISS board was faulty because it was sending fake temperature and humidity data to the console without any sensors connected to it. And a ISS board (used or new) for a VP1 is unobtainium. Funny enough the rare VP1 analog T/H sensor still works fine.
So I bought (thankfully I found a good shop with good prices on spare parts) a brand new VP2 Wireless ISS board with its casing (I bought the lid without the solar panel, cheaper and I wanted to reuse the VP1 solar panel anyway), a brand new digital T/H sensor and a used VP2 console, reusing all the VP1 remaining parts (anemometer, the little solar panel, rain gauge with the assembly and the solar shield).
Fun facts: Anemometer, solar panel and the rain gauge with its assembly are 100% compatible with the VP2 system.

Good work, it is running again like a charm. I really like the 90s design of the console with the bow at the bottom, the rippled surface below that and the "almost elliptic" knobs with that little groove that makes it streamlined. In the 90s and early 2000s things were like that. Funny that they sell that thing until today, even if they have also modern wireless consoles with colour touchscreen.

My Dad had something connected to the roof which connected to the PC via shielded CAT5. That cost a pretty penny too. It was more of a metrological setup though. He used to take readings every day and log it all down. He became far more accurate than the professionals. When it needed the batteries changing he'd send me up on the roof to do it. I hate heights!

I just fixed the screen to an Acurite 02001A1. It wasn't displaying all of the digits, etc.
There was corrosion inside the unit and on those Zebra connectors. Now I have to find the outdoor sensor for it, which is probably 20 times more than the $1 thrift store price....

Hi. great pair of videos, I have been using a Davis Vantage Pro2 for many years, and it is usefull to see how to deal with eventual future problems. Your ISS rain collector is calibrated for metric use (0.2 mm per tip), but your console is set for imperial (inches), to get more accurate rain metering, you should set it to use mm in the console. Or there should also be at conversion you can use at the collector, to set it to tip a little different for imperial use.

I fixed a lot of fat TV`s back in the days just by turning potmeters forward and back contrast .coil focus etc , old pot sank corroded in the coal lane making faulty values ,or how to say..well i know you understand it :) , made a lot of friends with a crappy tv happy

Nice fix. Do you think place the SHT chip in the oven instead on radiator would’ve corrected the problem? That being said, if it were to be effective, shouldn’t the interior sensor should be baked back into spec at the same time? Sheer curiosity.
BTW … those are some beautiful horses at the end of the videos. If you advertised this episode with a thumbnail of Pretzel inspecting your work, you’d have over a million views in no time.

I got same LCD problem with my modulating furnace thermostat. It shows it self only when in AC mode ...strange . Will have to look for fix as well since this thermostat costs arm and leg .

Maybe the capacitor you replaced on the first sensor has something to do with the humidity difference?
Thanks for commenting👍 The capacitor is a decoupling capacitor across the incoming supply. It's the sensor internally that measures the temperature and humidity which it then sends digitally back to the console.
As for the humidity sensor, there's a similar issue with the DHT22 temperature/humidity sensors when using on Arduino or ESP32.
Without the mods, I'll see a much higher humidity being sensed that is actually in the air.
As it turns out, while this does have a resistor across the data line to (either) 3.3V VCC or ground (I can't remember which it is), adding another resistor at the other end of the lines helps.
The other thing too, is an coded averaging routine. The big thing, with the DHT22 is to NOT access it at a fast rate, over and over. This causes it to choke. A delay of at minimum, 2 seconds allows it to reset itself. I use a minimum of 5 seconds.
With these tweaks, now the sensors are working much better.
So I wonder, if with that station, if perhaps the coding on that station is "over accessing" that sensor, not allowing it time to reset itself . Hmmmmm..
I think the old sensor just got corroded and failed. It's damn expensive for what it is.. a complete rip off. I've not really used the dht22 much. For the internet connected incubator I built out of a wine fridge I used a BME280 an esp32 and the lcd screen / rotary encoder from a 3d printer as the control UI. I used a servo motor that moved a rod to tilt the eggs every xx hours, and it logged all the data to things board with nice graphs and gauges 🙂

I'm totally addicted to them as they are programmable (code right within them) and being HMI, you can design gorgeous screens with full pictures and animations without any code from Arduino or ESP32.
No, but I did look at them some time ago, and they were fairly expensive. Something interesting I came across a while back was a small energy monitor display for smart meters, and it runs on an esp32. It has a graphics chip and touch screen controller in there too. I might make a video of it one day. Chameleon IHD6 I think it was.
I messed with a pipit500 energy display years ago, and worked out how to use the touch screen and display with an esp8266.. video is way back on my channel.

Great series ! half expected to see a Bosch BME280 in the new sensor. I just looked and they still make these and although the sensor array hasn't changed much (doesn't need too !) the display is all OLED goodness now with WIFI, GPS and connected to Google earth with a Tea making option !! lots of bells and whistles but like one and a half grand to buy new...just subbed !...cheers.

theyre 50quid cos theyre accurate, most are accurate to a few degrees only and can alter sensitivity with the temperature.
i have one here you can have 😂 part of a fan control system i had that disnt work right, cpu was a bit dodgy at hearing the remote control. sensor works fine though 🤷
The sensor comes in two flavours, there's the i2c version and the old legacy bus version (which isn't easy to get hold of) as no one really uses it. They both offer the same accuracy, and the i2c version can be bought for around £5. I had thought of making a protocol converter with a small microcontroller which would still work out cheaper than trying to get hold of the hard to get hold of not very common legacy bus version.

Just something I'm curios about. When you erected the weather station on its pole do you have to use a compass to set the correct orientation of the wind direction vane? Love the videos and more so as I'm also a Northumbrian.

You work in a room that is at 16.2 Celsius, well I would be frozed at that temperature. For me it has to be between 22 and 23 degrees Celsius. Mind you our outside temperature is write now at -15 degrees Celcius. Great video. You can now worry about temperature, humidity,precipitation and more.😊😊
We live in a big old farmhouse with 2ft thick stone walls. When we first moved here it cost a fortune to heat so we heat the main living area with a wood stove and the oil boiler does the rest of the house at around 17c. I've got an electric fan heater which I use sometimes in my work room. Tonight it's supposed to be around -10c here 😂😂😂😂

Is there anyway to put a different sensor in and get a microcontroller to send the correct protocol ?
Someone else a day or two ago was asking what would happen when these sensors are no longer available, and I suggest using a microcontroller to read perhaps the other variant of the sensor which uses i2c and convert it to the legacy protocol that the davis is looking for. An easier way would be for Davis to issue and update that allows the unit to use both i2c and legacy, but I doubt they will.
I love your videos. But repairing this weather station I think it was too expensive. And anyway, it is not pro grade station and completely isolated (i.e. you cannot connect it to any home automation system). Also I think wind sensor should be mounted in different place from temperature sensor (see the pro meteo stations). But as a subject of the video - PERFECT!
Thanks, yes I did work out quite an expensive repair, but it was still cheaper than buying a used one from Ebay. There is an adapter you can get that plugs onto the back of the console unit that sends the data to a website and I think people have also made their own with an esp8266 and such. They were great weather consoles! I couldn't afford one, so got the Vantage Vue system, which has been running well for at least 10 years. Did you add up everything you spent on replacement parts to see what the weather station eventually cost? Well done on the repair!
Thanks. Yes I think it was around £250 or so, which was more than I wanted to pay really. One of the expensive parts was the temperature sensor, which seems a bit of a rip off seeing a better sensor these days is only around £5 or so.
There could be something that's pulling the voltage down causing the low battery message.

At some point it will become economical to steal the temperature/humidity sensor 'chip' from a faulty display unit to repair a remote sensor, if the PCB is not too badly damaged.
I had been thinking it would be possible to use newer cheaper type sensor and use a small microcontroller as a protocol converter between the two.
@BuyitFixit Yep. Better idea might be to make a protocol converter between a cheap outdoor unit and a competent legacy display unit that are available for cheap because they have no sensors available to gain the whole sensor set in one go, reprogramming an existing micro to speak the legacy protocol would be a no cost solution that would get copied (send them the binaries) by the manufacturer and give new life to old displays.
Or if the company was really that bothered, they could just release a firmware update that would support both the legacy and i2c versions of the sensor...

your weather station needs to be much higher up away from the ground, to get true wind speed and direction. the wind at speed at 15-20 feet is much stronger than at ground level.
Thanks 👍yes it was the biggest pole I had at the time, also we live in a valley on a quite steep hill so I'm not sure how that would affect it. A few times the wind were we live has been quite bad in the past, once it was so bad I thought the roof was going to come off the house. No wonder the roof is made of 1" thick stone slabs.
@20:45 - Is there any chance that the outdoor hygrometer is supposed to be more of a "wet bulb" hygrometer? I say this because of that light-weight mesh that encloses the sensor. When I used to grow mushrooms, I used a wet-bulb hygrometer to monitor humidity. My father used to use something called a "Sling Psychrometer" to measure humidity when he was in the Navy.
Unfortunately I have no idea. I know the sensors inside and outside are the same part , except the outdoor one has the plastic cage and mesh fitted (I just assumed it's to keep bugs out).
I wonder how much time you invest in finding the documents and reading the troubleshooting pages. Good job.
Thanks, I've had a 20 minute video take hours even a couple of weeks to make sometimes, as after I open the device sometimes I have to look up part numbers and datasheets, schematics if available, and the order and wait for parts to arrive. Then editing (sometimes from 3 or 4 video sources) and speeding parts up etc, and viewing it back before release and doing some tweaks if needed. So it's usually a couple of days work for 1 video.

Thanks Morten, yes working fine. They are currently putting out 350w at the moment and 7.6kwh each today. I'm in the shed busy putting the gearbox back in the car with help from a friend.

as the cheap temp humidity modules aren't I2C and so are likely 'legacy', did you try one of those first before spending all that money on the OEM replacement?
Some are analogue, but a lot are i2c. The legacy bus in this case is something specific called sensibus which is similar to i2c but not the same and seems to be manufacturer specific.
I wonder if that cap blew up and disintegrated. Saw that happen to a trail camera of mine exposed to extreme heat

I'm VERY picky about audio issues with some UA-cam channels.
Some people do not know how to adjust the audio during editing. Some have it so dammed loud that, if wearing a headset, it just blasts to loud that hearing could be damaged,
Then, there are those who have their audio so low, that the content can hardly be heard, so one turns up the volume to hear and then, of course, the next video blasts.
Steve's audio is perfect! It's not over powered nor under powered.
I've noticed that most of his videos have great audio, right levels, very clear.
So, if you can't hear him, in this case, on this video, the issue might be at your side of the stream.
Or perhaps you are a bit deaf, which might explain your ALL CAPS!
