The new Skoda Octavia takes a slightly different approach to most small hatchbacks. It offers much more space inside than the likes of the VW Golf,Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and, of course, other VW group family members like the Audi A3 and SEAT Leon. It's great value, too, with decent prices and the sort of standard equipment that's closer to a Kia Cee'd or Hyundai i30. Running costs should be low, too, thanks to a range of fuel-efficient engines with fuel-saving features such as automatic stop/start for the engine when the car comes to a halt. It all adds up to a great value, hugely spacious and high-quality package that easily won our 2013 CarBuyer Best Family Car award.
Mat: Size matters. You know it, I know it and Skoda knows it. In fact that was one of the main selling points of the original Octavia -- it was less money and yet bigger than the VW Golf on which it was based. And this new Octavia is even bigger than before.
You see that boot it isn't just the biggest in its class. It's bigger than cars from the class above. So yes while this car is based on the Volkswagen Golf it's boot is bigger than a Passat's. And if you are into practicality then you will like this. Every Octavia comes with this in the fuel filler cap -- it's an ice scraper with magnifying glass -- that should come in useful.
Anyway as well as having a massive boot the Octavia's wheelbase is 10 cm longer than before which means there's absolutely acres of legroom. Admittedly headroom isn't quite so special due to the sloping roof but it's easily enough for most adults. For instance I have more than enough and in case you are wondering I'm Mr Average at 5ft10 and a half -- I'm mentioning the half because we've already established size does matter.
So does build quality, and the Octavia doesn't disappoint in this department either. Everything is very well screwed together like you'd expect from a Volkswagen group product and all the controls are logically laid out and the instruments easy to read. Storage space is good too thanks to large door bins and a smattering of useful cubby spaces.
When it comes selecting your Skoda the entry level S car has almost all you really need like seven airbags, electronic anti-skid control, alloy wheels, height adjustment on the drivers seat and reach and rake for the steering wheel, air conditioning, Bluetooth for your mobile phone, iPod connectivity and touchscreen with digital radio.
There's a wide range of options too including a self-park system for those intimated by the Octavia's increased size. As well as bay parking it can also parallel park the car lengthways into a space. It controls the steering all you have to do is operate the brakes and throttle.
In terms of the rest of the driving experience the Octavia is generally very good. It's pretty quiet and relaxing at speed yet also steers well, has plenty of grip and doesn't roll about in the corners. I should point out some people may find the suspension a bit on the firm side though you only really notice it on a really badly surfaced road and anyway you could never call this car uncomfortable. Speaking of which, you can change the driving characteristics at the touch of this button. In comfort you have a softer throttle response and lighter steering whereas in sport the steering is heavier and the throttle response sharper. Don't go thinking this makes the Octavia exciting to drive though -- you'll have to wait for the hot hatch VRS model for that.
There is no mistaking the Octavia is a brilliant car, but I wouldn't be doing my job as a car reviewer if I didn't find some problems with it. Can you just give me a moment while I think of some? Okay right -- I think I have a couple -- see this arm rest it's a 150 pound option on all but the top of the range model surely everyone wants somewhere to rest their elbow. Also everyone likes to see what's going on behind them -- but rear visibility in the Octavia isn't great because the back window. It's just so far away.
To be honest though, all these issues are just minor niggles. They should not put you off the Octavia because it's a truly great car which not only does everything well but provides unbeatable space at this price. And for that reason we awarded it the CarBuyer Best Family Car Award for 2013. - Авто та транспорт
Bet you didnt expect someone in 2023 to be watching this whislt looking for a second hand car
😂😂😂😂
Literally what I'm doing lol
@@ahronsumar5075 I actually bought one 1 year ago, after my first comment 😅 I'd highly recommend them. I purchased the 1.4 2015 version in blue. They feel a little lower than competitor vehicles. It feels as low as maybe a hatchback, but with much more comfort and incredible space throughout the car
Truly wonderful car. Works all the time, used in 142 taxi companies and 43 police forces alone! Best car that Skoda offer.
I have the older octavia and done 350.000 km with it and no problem at all! I didn't have any issues with it it's a great car and the fuel consumption it's incredible, even more considering the size of the car
It's a freaking Audi with a Skoda badge !!! Take my money, Skoda !
It's like having an Audi A4, with a very economical fuel engine consume
@@ArturoPerez-si2xkultimately slower though
@@lucutes2936no big deal, its fast enough and theres always the vrs if u want fast
I couldn't agree more, it's absolutely brilliant, it takes from you all the stress that you usually accumulate while driving in the city, yet he said that you have to operate brakes, throttle and gears, I wish it was 100% automatic
Overall, I found this car to be really impressive.
:) Classic. I'm from Czech republic and I always drove Skodas (Favorit, Felicia, Estelle - I'm young, so I have old cars.) I'm happy you like the cars and that they are cheap for you. Unfortunately, in our country Skoda puts the prices very high, because they simply can afford to...
Here in Finland teens get picked on for having a skoda
@@Badwarrior5 Well, they're not what you would cool, but they are good. I bet the parents of the teens that pick on other, who drive Skodas, drove Ladas back in the days of the cold war...
I dreamed of a Sköda Octavia from 2004 to 2012 (second generation) and want it for my first car
@@Badwarrior5 Skodas actually have a cool image now because they’re seen as the clever persons car who isn’t a slave to snobby badges
Size doesn't matter. As long as its you Mat!
I'm not in the Market for a car, and I'm not even in Europe but I love watching these reviews.
I bought a used estate 1.4TSI DSG 4 years ago. What a buy! I love it every day I drive it.
Haha,my dad is a cab driver, and while we went to the dealer to service my Yeti, while waiting he was introduced to this car....
He ended up ordering a mid-spec SE model after 2 days :D
If I had scratched that 6 series infront of me, I'd be off quicker than you could see.
WhiteSlift 😭🤑👿
🤣🤣🤣😅
I really like this car, good looking, cheap, well equipped, spacious!
Gotta say the parking assist was impressive....I think we are getting used to seeing cars that can parallel park themselves but I've never seen a review of one before that can un-park itself and also park into a normal space for you too.....they always were good value though even before VW got them!
Now they can drive itself
have one with the 1.8 tsi 180hp manual and it's an excellent car, with 17 inch wheels, a perfect balance of space, confort, sportiness-ish, great engine, etc, etc, etc.
It looks much better in person than on videos, especially in silver color, which fits it best by far, I would not sell this car in any other color. And interior is just so well made, it feels like an Audi inside. Its definitely higher in quality than the current Passat, and almost as good as the new Golf or A3.
Great review Mat! Never seen a parking aid that gets you out of a space before! Well done!!
I can't think of any reasons to buy a Golf or a Passat over this, so well done Skoda! I can't even think of any reasons to buy a Superb over this, as you shouldn't need a car bigger than this Octavia. Apart from the somewhat awkward proportion, it's a good looking car.
But with fully loaded Octavia you get things from Merc C-class which you dont have on entry level Insignia, not even mid range Insignia, some not even on top spec one. For example you have to pay special extra on top spec to get Bi-Xenon headlamps. Which costs about 2 time more than Octavia.
Before Honda Civic became its 2016 self, Skoda has done it already.
Yooka: Hi, I’m Yooka, and your video review made lots of sense. I’m getting this tomorrow at midday, Laylee is coming with me, and I think I might go for either the optional nets, or the optional armrest. I’m not kidding... By the way, I’m actually getting the used 2014 estate model.
A day later...
Yooka: Okay, what are my thoughts? Well, the boot is MASSIVE!, AKA the biggest in class, I also went for the optional nets to stop my things rolling about all over the place. And before you ask, yes, I got the more practical still estate version from 2014, and, in the rear, I have lots of room, so six footers should be just about okay in the rear. As for safety, and the driving experience, etc., well, I got several safety systems, and loads of parking aids, and overall, the driving experience was very sharp. The only problem was at the rear, because the seats didn’t fold completely flat. In fact, they almost did, but they didn’t. Overall, I’m very happy with this Skoda, because it’s a replacement for my Ford Focus Estate from 2012. And ultimately, I think it’s very practical, especially with the biggest boot in its class. Hope this helped. Goodbye.
Another day later...
(insert ear rape version of "Skoda. Simply Clever." jingle here)
7 months later…
Bluey: I don’t actually drive.
Yes, the spring loaded nets are a massive problem on this car. In fact I've now stopped throwing things into the car from a distance after I almost got hit by my own boomeranging luggage!
You want him to say that Skoda is bad even if its good? Its a great car, thats a fact. Go test drive one and you will see that everything about it (except styling) is as good as it gets in its class and some things are even better than in cars of segment above.
2.0 tdi is the one to go for. Really powerfull with low consumption.
The VA Group is setting the bar really high even for its "cheap" cars. With SEATs and Skodas looking good on the outside as well as on the inside and having such a quality feel to them, it's gonna get hard to compete with them.
These are used for taxis a lot because they're one of the most reliable cars out there, when i was in the taxi i saw one of these get 115 mpg!
Looks like a really nice car. The outside is very BMW-ish; it even has a Hoffmeister kink.
in Russia we love the Skoda Octavia. But we have very expensive prices on them as well as any other cars.
A new Skoda Octavia in Russia is only 589,900RUB / €13,200. In my country, a new Skoda Octavia is 1,900,000RUB / €28,600 :P
(Cheapest model)
Imagine all those new scratches down the left hand side. 😭
dude, I think you never drove one ... it has one of the best build quality you can find in Europe ... its same good as any VW.
are the engines reliable? read about timing chain snapping and they dont last too long
Had two Skoda's an octavia and a fabia, fabia new, octavia two yrs old when I got it-neither fully broke down or ever failed to get me home but both had one electrical issue after another-there will never be a third....VAG group are where Mercedes was 15 years ago.
Taxi drivers will be loving this
Nice. I wish we had Skoda over here. Thanks.
3:27 - Aleksandar Vucic!
Srbi znaju zasto :)
Hahaha znaju i hrvati
great review!!! i will buy it with DSG and TDI 150... this park extra is great!
The cars you guys drive in the uk look pretty awesome, I really want to move there!
Gotta say, this new Octavia does float my boat!
I didn't say that it makes the car worse. To me, resale value is important, I don't want to lose a load of money on my car when I come to change it. All I know is that both my parents got new cars around the same time - dad got an Octavia and mum an A3. Three years down the line and the A3 has lost less money than the Octavia. - Which undoubtably will be sold to taxi firm, where so many of these cars appear to end up. Plus, the A3 is such a nicer car!
You are my favourite car reviewer mate
I wish we have this in our country. That parking system was great!
everything's good. a great car. but what I've noticed that the steering wheel is on the wrong side! What happenned?
Amazing parking system... Quite impressive.
A young mat Watson good god
It comes with air conditioning really Matt
Matt is the best reviewer on the youtube..
i thought the reverse gear was a waste of money untill the auto park feature became available :}
From 84 (in 1,2L petrol) to 180 (in 1,8L petrol)
Or in vRS version 220 HP
Rapid and Octavia is the best looking skoda ever!
Matt best reviewer ever
Wow. Looks like Skoda's competitors are gonna have a hard time beating this if you look at the overall package.
Yeah, I think you are right! That's exactly how the platforms are used
Octavia car is best car
Can anyone who has owned this model (2013-2018) please inform me how hard, or not, the ride is - is it uncomfortable?
Also, for the 1.4TSI Automatic, how smooth is the gearbox, and is the acceleration fast enough in most conditions, and even fun?
i did 1300 km in one day. its very comfortable. soft suspension. some noise more than the equivalent golf but not an issue.
@@Giancarlojc Is it an engine noise or from road/wind? I'm considering buying a 2015-2016 Octavia and noise and road grip are my top priorities. So far Octavia is the best I've test driven.
@@annak1378 I would say mostly noise from the road, but not annoying. Definetly not wind noise. I run on winter tyres and 1.6 TDI. Engine is noisier then the gasoline counterpart, but again not a problem.
Nothing to say on road grip. The car is simply stable.
@@Giancarlojc Thank you!
Yeeeeey :D , iam so proud cause I've just bought it a week ago ;)
Pretty much all cars from the VW group look good right now, IMO.
It obvious that the brake are gonna be very sharp because it has the automatic transmission and the brake operates the clutch(s)
I guess you're talking about the Seat Exeo... well, you're right in that case. But the other models are as new as a Polo/A1/Fabia, Golf/A3/Octavia. The good old Alteas will be replaced soon - I guess when a new Golf Plus comes out - if ever. Also a Skoda Yeti cousin will be appearing some time soon me thinks.
Have a good day! :)
I like the car, it's the best looking of all the vw group at the moment. I know, i am crazy ;)
7 minutes of Mat?! This will be good ;)
Set to debut on July 11, the third-gen Octavia vRS is likely to be powered by a 2.0-liter TFSI engine producing about 220 hp (164 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque. There are also talks about a second, more potent version offering 250 hp (186 kW).
who enchanged the skoda and audi logo?
I’ve a 2014 vrs, superb machine!
@Alans Baburs did u sell it ?
@Alans Baburs oh sorry man hope it gets well soon haha jk .
AC is pretty standard nowadays but up until a few years ago it was an extra especially in smaller city cars.
amazing car...Design is subtle , classy and looks a lot an Audi/BMW hybrid.Great interior , great value..I love it so much.I wish to own one ^_^
This car looks really nice, especially with those wheels
Doesn't matter. Not all cars they review are completely new. The Laguna 3 has had a facelift recently and they haven't reviewed it. In fact, they haven't reviewed any Laguna at all.
Czech republic, most dieseles here are in big SUVs and company cars. But for family we buy mostly petrol cars.
Petrols have always given better refinement whereas diesels have given bettermpg so most people now go for diesels. However, petrols are now catching up in terms of mpg, so I wonder if in a few years people will start switching back to petrols.
No. I don't know about the diesels, but petrols go like this:
1.2 tsi 105bhp and 175nm torque
1.4 tsi 122 bhp and 200nm torque
1.4 tsi twincharged 160bhp and 250nm torque (I doubt this will be an option as it is an expensive engine)
1.8 tsi 160bhp 260nm torque
I have a Seat Leon with a 1.4 122bhp engine, and it can beat almost any mundane car.
Its a subsidiary of VW Group though. So Cody was half right about VW bringing it in.
自動で縦列駐車してくれるとかすごすぎィ!!
Both the Octavia and Superb are great cars but cars like the Insignia are in a class of its own and only Ford and VW owners wouldn't appreciated that - if you dig a little you will see it is the most awarded car considering reliability and Opel has less running costs than any of its competitors, it also doesn't have exterior paint in the interior (like the top of the line Octavia), the highway performance is also on great level and it doesn't feel vague with soft steering and suspension, etc....
Actually it is, Skodas are always based on VWs or Audis sometimes the current models, often previous gen. cars. The Octavia for instance is based on the Passat, the Yeti is based on the Tiguan the citigo on the up etc.
And for instance the Superb is based on the previous A5 at least it alsways has been don't know if it's the same now.
Skodas are "just" stipped down cheap VWs/Audis.
VWs are the base for "avarge" costumers, Audi for wealthyer ones.
And Skoda and Seat are the cheaper line.
I want this car so badly
I want this car....! it seems very balanced choice to me... nice review, as well..
Cannot wait for the vRS :D
Good. I know diesels are much better than what they were, but petrols are still better refined. In the UK people in recent years have been buying diesels only because the VED is lower. I wish we could get some better petrol engines. I want an Audi A5 TFSi.
When You look at the Display You can really see the volkswagen family resemblance. It looks pretty much the same in the new Golf.
Comes to Australia in October !!! Yay
I thought that it would be a bit unpleasend to drive with the simple rear suspension, but it's actually pretty good. I'm curious if there is gonna be a big difference between the ride of the octavia Combi and the Golf 7 estate/wagon/station/variant because of the rear suspension.
Classic @MatWatson days
Omg look at that interior!
If only you could buy one here in the States.
i would say white and dark blue, or black look best on this.
nice self parking
this car is amazing, cant wait to get one, i just cant decide which color!!!
I love this car. I rented one in Ireland and didn't want to return it
had the O2 1.9 TDI for 5Y not a single problem
Impressive package for the money.
Sit inside the new Octavia and the current Passat. See which feels more "budget". Octavia actually feels more expensive in terms of build quality and materials used than the current Passat. And lets not compare the Passat to Superb, which feels like a car 2 segments above.
Indeed! An awesome car!
Love the auto park feature!
This car is ludicrously good value.
It looks very nice!
Are u sure? Rapid shares platform with Polo sedan (or saloon) which is not in sale in the UK. But Octavia shares the platform with Jetta, Golf and Seat Toledo.
The flat boot floor is on Estate version Matt.
this car i amazing. i love the parking features.
Taxi drivers love these things
great skoda! great review!
