Skoda Octavia 2018 in-depth review | Mat Watson Reviews
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 сер 2024
- The Skoda Octavia is very loosely based upon one of Volkswagen’s most popular models, the Golf. However, a larger body is traded for some of Volkswagen more premium touches. However, because the Octavia is such good value for money, it competes against much smaller rivals, such as the Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf, and Hyundai i30, which are certainly less practically. This 2017 model has just received a facelift, so what’s new? I’ll explore all this practical hatchback has to offer in this in-depth video review.

This is Škoda not a Skoda...
Dude, matt, mutt...whatever. Before stating subjectively that it is not as quiet as a golf, just either compare them at the same time, same brand of tires and same engine and then talk. Or even try to consult databases and/or other comparative tests that actually show that it is as or more quiet than the afforementioned VW.
love this channel...!!
Its Skoda. Dull, stupid, cheap and uninspiring. And made of VW parts which means its crap too. Yeah,it has angular shape which some may equal to solidity and quality but underneath is..same VW toilet.
A can save 3500 box if am in an another country like morocco please tell me
I have the 2015 model, there actually is a place for the top tray in the boot, you lift it up and slide it down against the back of the seats, and you don't lose a lot of boot space either. I had the 2008 model too and it was the same. I'm a taxi driver, and in ten years in an Octavia I've never been unable to fit all the luggage in the boot. I clocked up 800,000km on the last one, great car.
I'm not a taxi driver but am considering an Octavia, as i drive about 45,000 miles (around 75000 km) per year. What are your thoughts between 1.6tdi and 2.0tdi? I drive mainly motorway, 70-80mph (110-130kph) and am most concerned about fuel efficiency!
@@TF-qd8ru 1.6 tdi is more efficient afaik. My father has a 1.6, easily gets over 60mpg on the motorway, sometimes even 70 depending on conditions. Can do a full trip from Manchester to brimingham and back in £20
@@saadmughal6276 do you know what the 2.0tdi would do for the same trip?
@@TF-qd8ru I wouldn't know that from real world usage but checking combined mpg figures (which, incidentally, are about the same as the figures my dad gets on the motorway) the 2L does only 2mpg less. Do bear in mind that you might be a tax band dearer because the larger engine is more pollutant. Still I think its around £30, whereas with the 1.6 you'd be around £20, or some models like my dad's only produce 99g/km with the 1.6 engine so that's £0. (it's the lowest trim and manual. Only add on it has is stop start)
I'd imagine you could quite easily still manage Manchester to Birmingham and back in £20 with the 2.0.
@@saadmughal6276 I ordered a Superb 2.0tdi DSG. I'm waiting for delivery, apparently it arrived in the UK two days ago
This car’s design stood the test of time very well! The original design is from 2013 and today almost in 7 years later, it still looks good for another few years.
The more I look at those headlights, the more I like them. They actually grow on you.
is everything ok with you...? lol I saw it alive they are sooo ugly...
@@mariolosberg4257 Must be pretty scary to see living lights
+Sekuoia ha ha ha...
especially when they are lit
@@Firemarioflower wtf 😂😂
If you don't need to fold down the back seats, then there is a place for the trunk cover just behind them, you just slide it in there. Then it is parallel to the backrest. Used it myself that way multiple times.
Petr Lohnický exactly ! I was about to write about it but then I noticed your comment. It's a pretty clever way to store that trunk shelf. I wonder how Matt didn't see it! It's part of the simply clever philosophy of the brand.
SHTT AS You wish ;-)
Yep, was about to mention that. Quite a novel design tbh. Although I did have to read the manual to work it out :)
Petr, how?? Explain it to me please 😃
Bought it, love it. Lots of space, huge trunk, 6-8L in city - great car for money.
I think im the only one who likes that headlight design. Anyone else?
It does look better in person than in the video TBH.
well, I once heard there was this guy from Cork who kinda didn't hate it...
Actually placed an order for the car and have grown quite fun of the headlights. At first they seemed strange, but now I likee them a lot. They give the car a unique look. Regardless of how you feel about the headlights, this facelift brings a lot more to the table than just them. The interior lights are great, new infotainment, led lheadlights with auto dimming based on traffic.... why would I care more on something that I won't ever see while driving than be glad for all the improvements in the cabin where it really counts.
I like it. Looks modern.
I like them too
This is the best value for money of any car in any class. Now go get a good deal for the remaining pre-facelift models..
Right..The built quality is not that good in octavia...You can feel it if you sit in one...For example the door handles feel really cheap and other nasty plastics...
@@HypnOlli that's not true. I have a Passat 2010 and this octavia actually feels nicer
@@HypnOlli too much chronic for you bud! Your dud review gets a one bong spill rating.
@@EqualsDeath A mid to high quality car from 2010 doesn't feel as nice as a value for money car released eight years later?
Wow! What a shocker!
@@tomgl6684 Octavia is 2013. Facelift has been done but it was really a small thing. After 3 years of driving it I have to say that it didn’t age very well. I actually feel that when I’m jumping the in Passat it’s more premium (especially the seats…. Oh the seats!!…)
I have a 2018 Octavia and Im absolutely in love with it! Upgraded from a 2010 VW Golf 1.6tdi.
The Octavia is a fantastic car with great milage and also looks amazing in my opinion. Brilliant car overall!!
Is it reliable?
@@dragospahontu I only have it about a month and a half and so far its been perfectly reliable, no issues at all and a dream to drive, very comfortable. Skodas are typically known for their reliability much the same as the VW Golf!
@@Altairthehiddenone What engine/transmission did you go for?
@@dragospahontu i went for the 1.6 Litre diesel, manual transmission
@@Altairthehiddenone nice
2:03 Cool octave you got there!
Pre facelift looks so much better. What were they thinking?
VW wants to sell more Golfs because they are more expensive so they forced Skoda to make the Octavia uglier so people would buy the Golf instead.
VW wanted them to downgrade not to be a competition to WV most likely xD
The designer parted ways with Škoda right after (went to BMW) so maybe he's decided to destroy any possible competition :D
Taky mě to napadlo =DDD, BTW Ahoj, já jsem taky čech =DDDD
they wanted it to look more like a mercedes
The adaptive suspension is indeed able to absorb much more bumps than the stock suspension. It was the most remarkable improvement compared to its predecessor in my opinion.
I'll be honest I hated the lights at first but now, I love it
Those headlights are going to cost Skoda a lot of sales.
Previous model is so elegant looking, now it is just plain butt ugly.
Yup, I wonder who's responsible of those? He/she should be fired immediately. I'm yet to bump into a person who likes the revised look...
meMe
Haha. The main designer went to BMW. funny
those headlights are the main thing I started to consider buying Skoda because it looks class
As always, Mat, a good review. I like Skoda and bought a new Octavia 4 x 4 estate in 2005. Kept it four years and traded it in for a new BMW 5 SE with all the bells and whistles. Still don't know to this day why I did so. The Octavia was a great car and brilliant in snow. Though I really like my BMW it is not worth twice what I paid for my Octavia.
My thoughts on my 17 plate 'normal headlights' 1.6tdi select estate.
11 months old, 24'000 miles (all by me)
Good
Satnav is great (albeit odd to get a postcode into at first)
Adaptive cruise control is fantastic
Economy (for me with a manual) has never dropped lower than 50 mpg
Centre arm rest is hight and length adjustable
The 12 v charges (1 in the front,1 in the boot) are live 24/7
Digital speedo is nice and large
Boot is massive
Still on its original tyres.
Steering lock (turning circle) is almost on par with a London taxi
Ice scrapper in the fuel flap seemed like a stupid idea when I picked the car up last March, for the last month it has seemed a brilliant idea
Bad
The seat squabs are short
The 1.6 diesel (in 110 bhp) has chuff all torque,so often a gearchange down is required
Mirrors don't fold when you lock the car
Headlight brightness is nothing special
Bonnet (as matt says) is heavy and gas struts would be nice
Brake pads (original) cover the alloys in brake dust
Hill hold (it has a manual handbrake, but also electronic Hill hold) is rather violent when driven through (it holds for 3 seconds)
My battery went flat(a issue known to skoda but only whispered about) resulting in an AA call out and warrenty battery change at skoda
Small petrol tank, but big fuel gauge
All in all the best company car I have had to date.
I actually love the headlights! Its quite a head turner!
On this darker colour, the new headlights don't bother me that much. When you look at a silver one, it stands out and it's ugly.
The bumper on this trim makes it look hideous. The rs bumper looks better
I actually like how this car looks. Very cool for the money. AND if you chiptune them they can go pretty well as well
British people are just spoilt. This car is a dream car for people in most other nations and is such a beautiful car to look at and drive
I'm about to take delivery of my second Octavia. First time I have leased the same car twice in a row. I have a 1.4 TSI SE Sport and am getting. 1.5 TSI SE L. Capacious, fast, economic, comfortable, quality interior and well equipped. The new car has the new more economical 150 bhp engine, leather/Alcantara, LED headlights. I have to say though, why do reviewers feel the need to be incessantly overcheerful and belabour us with their "humour"?
the front lights are horrible
Can you show the rear led lights on car reviews would have love to seen the rear leds of this car
I think he means with LED's on
Cool Guy I meant with them actually on, like Matt turning them on
Why doesn't skoda open up the market in North America? I'm sure they'd be a hit
Isaac Kondoh There's literally no reason as to why Skoda would do good in the US.
perhaps they would do good in canada but americans want bigger engines and skoda has small engines so they wouldnt do good in us which has a large share in the north america market
AMericans are too superficial and clueless about cars to be able to appreciate something as a Skoda that has an understated quality. In other words, not enough fake chrome and shiny plastic to appear to americans.
Isaac Kondoh stupid car for stupid people, it would work
Isaac Kondoh as an American, I wish they did
7:04 there is a way to store the parcel shelf. Slightly raise the front of parcel shelf out of its pivot then slide down guide at the back of the seat.
7:05 Boot shelf can be placed vertically behind rear seats.
The headlights grown on me, and in my opinion it’s beautiful
Yeaaa this car isn't really the "budget" car where I come from
yeah, for example in India it's a premium brand
Yeah if you compare them with cheap Maruti’s in India. But if you compare it with 3 series or C class, it’s cheap.
Would love to see a review of the Mazda 3. Seems like an interesting (slightly less expensive?) alternative to the likes of the Golf and Focus.
Slightly more expensive to buy and own, lacking torque, with harsh suspension and old infotainment system.
What is it that makes it more expensive to own?
Wouldn't be a fan if it had an uncomfortable ride
Why is it a rubbish car?
It's not less expensive where I live, but I must applaud the petrol engines. While the rest of the industry downsized its engines, Mazda did the complete opposite. The base engine is a 1.5L, but I'd avoid that one because you can get a proper 2.0L with 120hp or 150hp and it's great for low fuel consumption at highway speeds, instant torque and low maintenance.
I'd much MUCH rather have a 2.0L 4 naturally aspirated engine, than the 1.0L or 1.4L TSI forced-induction engines that VW currently offers (the rest of the industry is doing similar stunts). Small petrol engines actually use more fuel when you go fast and downsizing with turbos equals shorter longevity. Car companies are reducing their production costs by producing these small turbo engines and increasing maintenance costs for the consumer, which is a disaster.
Very little of this instant torque, 1.4 TSI is much quicker. And more economical in real life. Mazda's 2.0 Skyactiv isn't all that economical. Here's actual consumption scored in similar conditions:
Model / advertised consumption / tested real world consumption
Ford Focus 1.0 EB 125hp / 4.7 l/100km / 7.0 l/100km
Honda Civic IX 1.8 140hp / 6.1 l/100km / 7.7 l/100km
Kia Cee'd 1.0 turbo 120hp/ 4.9 l/100km / 7.1 l/100km
Mazda 3 2.0 120hp M/T / 5.1 l/100km / 7.4 l/100km
Nissan Pulsar 1.2 115hp/ 5.0 l/100km / 6.6 l/100km
Opel Astra 1.4T 125hp / 5.1 l/100km / 7.0 l/100km
Peugeot 308 1.2 130hp / 4.6 l/100km / 6.2 l/100km
Renault Megane 1.2 130hp/ 5.3 l/100km / 7.1 l/100km
Seat Leon 1.4 TSI 125hp/ 5.2 l/100km / 6.4 l/100km
VW Golf 1.4 TSI 125hp / 5.2 l/100km / 6.4 l/100km
In the real world 1.4 TSI uses 1l/100km less than 2.0 Skyactiv.
Please review the "Skoda Superb Hatchback". Thanks, I'm loving these reviews.
I got a vrs245 recently ,its not the hottest out there but I think it's the best allrounder in hot hatch Market. A great drive.
Matt please, it's Škoda (Shkoda) not a Skouda.
Forget it, Mattedge.
Lmao Matass
It's practical and cheaper, perfect match. My uncle had a skoda for 20 years and it was sturdy.
This is one of the best looking cars
No stupid grills or massive lights.
Oh, and here's a 6th thing you might like about the new Octavia: there is an ice scraper in the fuel filler door. (Or at least, I think there is one.)
This is a premium car in India. Cars are really expensive here. The on road price of a top model diesel automatic Octavia is 40000 usd.
The parcel shelf does have somewhere to fit when u are not using it... It fits parallel with the back seats
You buy a Skoda and its Volkswagen
You buy a Mercedes A class and its Renault
You buy a Renault and its Nissan
...pffff
PVP Renault owns Mercedes?
@@zqz1585 mercedes didn't bother themselves with making the smallest classes engines so the à classe and B class and cla's 180 and 200 versions use Renault engines
The 220 version of the last said cars use mercs engine
You buy a renault and its a... samsung
I honestly like it
the waiting list for 1.4 TSI 150 fps engine is ridiculous tho! 3-4 months waiting time.
they removed the volume and zoom knobs on the infotainment? That's gonna get annoying.
Only on the 9.2-inch Columbus. The 8-inch Bolero and Amundsen still have two rotary knobs.
Welcome to 2017 where everything physical has to go away to be replaced by capacitive buttons, thus making things harder and more dangerous to use when you are on the road.
You have the volume on the steering wheel anyway. Only the passenger will be annoyed.
actually you have a volume knob on a steering wheel, which is the safest option.
Volume is on the steering wheel and if you get the virtual cockpit so is the zoom.
I like the split lights
Skoda is better than ANY American cars
Please do the OCTAVIA VRS.. love from India ❤️
There is actually a place for the shelf in the booth but probably I will let you figure it out by your own
Skoda the best car for the money in europe ! My favorite. I would buy a superb
Please tell them
Love my 2016 Octavia 👍
Pls review the estate version!
I would like to order my next lease, but want to know if it's more pratical than the hatchback and better then the previous version.
I thought it looked horrible at first but it's grown on me.
Mat, I think you should adjust rear headrests when sampling rear space. In some modern cars they don't extend enough, so as to prevent neck injury in an event of a rear-end crash.
As a single traveller or two people who are very close, you can camp in the back of one of these you just need a sheet of wood to level up the lip bung a mattress and duvet in the back and do the Scottish NC500 in it... You could probably live in it if you were desperate.
lol budget car with a 1200 optional 9" screen and leather seats. dude, long gone are the days of octavia being budget.
It is relativly cheap so it's budget..but greaat!
In my opinion Skoda makes even better compact/small sized family cars then VW or Seat( I like VW so no bias here)
The parcel shelf slides behind the rear seats!!
Mat does a good impression of Clark Kent wearing glasses.
no
Hey Mat...would you do a rewiew of the Dacia Lodgy? Great work by the way, love the style od the show!
"starts at £17000" here's your equipment list:
- 1.6 petrol with 93bhp
- 5 speed manual transmission
- mechanically operated windscreen wipers
- mechanically operated windows and side mirrors
- cloth interior
- casette and AM/FM radio
- 2 speaker sound system
- steel wheels with hub caps

Certainly the most "interesting" headlight design for a long while! From some angles they look ok. Like when viewing the car from the back about a mile away.
Saw it in the flesh, it looks a lot better in the real world.
Especially in vRS guise 😁
Lights are fine.best value family car on a budget.
You could always put the parcel shelf on top of the luggage.
I find it amusing to see Brits criticizing mass production, mid range cars, while not being able to produce a viable one themselves for the past few decades.
you can set the parcel shelf to the rear seat backrest
My Octavia has a full size spare wheel
3:48 Not a tethering point but a place to hang your bags so they don't slide around
I actually like the way how the inner parts of the headlights continue the shape of the grill though I don't like how boxy the lights are... It just looks too old-school.
Matt, you can slide the parcel shelf down behind the rear seats when it's not in use.
Ahhh. Yes you can.
I would totally get one in VRS. In a lot of ways Skoda is the VAGs "people's car". More room than my e92
the twin headlights are brilliant .. love the new look
I don't understand why they still not put gas struts in the hood, it is so cheap to add and makes it so much easier for the mechanic or even for checking fluids
where i live, the Golf GTD is actually 2 grand cheaper than the Octavia RS diesel with same engine... not a hard pick now is it
Who doesn't need the VRS? C'mon Matt!
2013 Skoda did parking by itself. You should have showed that feature here again if this one is capable enough
I was actually not so keen on the split eye look either, but it's grown on me over time. :)
Matt you just hit 100 reviews! Celebrate?!?!
Same happened to Mercedes E-class while back. Hated it too. :(
you were wrong on the parcel shelf it slots behind the rear seats like in the smaller skodas
He says the 1.0 engine is no good you need the 1.5 engine however when he did the review in 2013 of this car he recommended the 1.2 engine as all you need . I have this car with the 1.2 engine and it’s fantastic in fact it feels just as powerful as a 1.8 non turbo engine which I used to have in my old mondeo
The 1.2 is a 4 cylinder
Omg! Mat in glasses is LOVE! 😂
Hi, I recently bought a new octavia, 1.5 TSI; and I already ran into an issue: avg. speed, consumption and distance reset randomly all three functions (current, long term and since refueling). Did anyone else have this problem, and what did you do with it? (Other than taking it back to the dealer).
I always love these videos even if I don’t always love the cars in the videos
really good sense of humor good review
I have the pre facelift model and i love it 😍 i recently squeezed 154.1 mph out of it with its 150 hp tdi 😄👍🏻👍🏻
Is it reliable cos I'm considering one with the same engine ?
Yep go ahead but make sure it has the timing belt done if it’s up there with the kilometers and go for the euro 5 at least those aren’t cheat engines if you know what I mean they produce 320 nm torque and with a simple software update you can tell it it’s a VRS engine which makes around 184 hp 😄👍🏻 always check for the condition of the car but if everything seems healthy go and get it they are notoriously reliable
@@shtopfl5247 yes i heard that reliability is excellent, thank you so much for replying mate cheers 👍
Badre Selmane you’re welcome bro 😎
octavia FL 2012 (elongated fronlights) - still best shape & greatest success ...
Matt do a review on the vrs version please
Can you start to do dB measurement ? Would be nice to compare, just saying its quieter is hard to use between 4 different models :)
they just split the headlights in half.
But its just so quirky and kinda funny that i like it
Review the Octavia VRS please
The whole fold-over back-seats for the extra ease of boot space is probably the only bad thing about what Skoda is doing with their cars. That is, just letting the back of the seats fold over, instead of the dual fold.. or whatever :)
But honestly how often do you use that, really.
Amazing car manufacturer and can't wait to see what they do in the future.
Since when was £17k a budget price? You could get an Octavia for £10,995 in 2010? It's far from budget and like for like is as expensive as a Focus and more expensive than an Astra
I have one, it's a great car, but it's not cheap by any stretch of the imagination
Jim Bob Its a lot bigger isn't it? Its a budget saloon car that may not seem cheap to you but is compared to the rest of the market.
also this is more expensive version, you can get it cheaper
krellay it starts at £17k - yes it has a bit more knee room in the back, however, front space is average, the car feels narrower and lower than the generation before it and the estate is not as practical. I own one, I still decided it was a better package and their 0% finance swung it. Still expensive for what it is.
Jim oh, wasn't aware that it starts at that price. Yikes, that is quite expensive for a starting version, I do agree with you. I also got octavia 2014, it has decent equipment and it was around 12-13k (it was a used car with 30,000 kilometers)
Jim Bob if 99% of people are idiots, that means, you can say whatever you can as long as you sound confident, one guy once told me confidently "yea, my rav4 was 4wd but i converted it to bi-turbo".
Really wish you could have test drove the vrs 230 model.
Looking back at this, it's ridiculous how Škoda is supposed to be value for money but here in Finland you could easily rack up the price of a low range Octavia to 10k more than a Ford Focus Vignale for pete's sake
Octavia with the manual. best
I do Love the fact that It comes with a ''6'' speed Manual Transmission. The man said that volkswagon owns skodia? So I guess volkswagon dealerships will sell this car?
I love the headlights :D very good car and review!
Skoda 2L diesel with awd and manual is very nice. Those seem to be pretty popular here in Finland
I like the front
Octavia RS is great. Nice sporty car with a small price. I would recommend it.
Still can't believe they did that to the front. The pre-facelift front was utterly brilliant and nice and clean, why would they go all E-Class on it? Especially since Mercedes spent a ridiculous sum on the mother of all facelifts to fix that E-Class so that people would buy it.
Thank you for an excellent review, very detailed.
