    Thank you for commenting on the plastic thermostat housing. I replaced my thermostat three times (once through the dealer) and the fourth time replacing it with aluminum housing has improved my life greatly.

      Hi, how long does it take you to replace a thermostat on average? I just had my housing replaced today and got hit with $112 for labor. They normally rate it at $30/hr so this raised a red flag. Im pretty sure they ripped me off, but I was in a crunch and needed my car back same day. Thanks for any info!

      Too late for a reply for your sake, but yes that is too much for labour if they are saying its $30 an hour.
      Best thing to do is contact chevy / gm direct next time for a quote including labour time and then you will know if your mechanic is ripping you off.
      At end of day you dont know what time it might take them hence why I suggest asking GM / Chevy first :)

    Wish I knew before hand about the O ring on the metal pipe with the 2 bolts. Had the job done in about an hour went to air out the system and found it leaking right underneath! Gonna give it a shot tomorrow once I drain the coolant since it’s all wasted anyways lol

      I had the same issue, need the o-ring that goes on the metal pipe under the thermostat housing, but just cant seem to find what part # it is, or what its called, I ordered one on amazon called "Oil coolant pipe gasket" but seems way too wide (about .2"), I tightened lightly because its flat wall ring and not a donut shaped o-ring, so it leaked because it seems to kink. where did you find the oring that worked for you?

    Great video! I did the same repair on my Daughter’s 2014 Cruze LS with 1.8L. The repair is exactly the. I replaced the “O” ring beneath the metal pipe that is held on with two bolts under the thermostat housing.
    The dealer wanted about $450.00 to $500.00 parts and labor. I told them to piss off when GM would not help. The new GM part is all aluminum and made outside the USA. My Daughter found one for about $40.00 on Amazon. All sensors and square “O” ring. I had to purchase the chicken $hit plastic connector, plastic tube and rubber hose,
    Thank you again for a great video.
    Do you have one on vacuum leaks and P0171 MIL code?
    The leak is on the right side and back of the plastic intake manifold. There is a vertical slit approximately 12mm long. I don’t know if it is caused by a broken part inside the intake manifold or a leak in the PCV valve in the valve cover (camshaft cover according to the morons at GM.)
    Thank you
    BS Du Bois

    My mechanic changed this twice with a housing that is all aluminum made in Asia. It works for a month or so & then it leaks again, same spot as b4 with the original GM housing. I noticed the original one is made of plastic. I read that the aluminum one will last longer, so we went with it. My original GM plastic housing leaked & eventually cracked. I would think that if the part was defective it may happen once, but not twice. He charged me $310 for the work & it still leaks. Could it be leaking from another part near the housing & seem like it is leaking from the housing itself. Any suggestion?

    Thanks man this helped a lot. Sadly I bought this car in full without knowing it had previous problems it had. 2015 at 36k miles and just out of it's powertrain warranty. Once again the dealerships have let me down.

    I walked through several stores in my city and no unit brought all the gaskets, Yes bring the sensors but just bring the square gasket that attaches the unit to the engine. I had to invent a coupling for the small upper socket because the original socket does not engage with the aluminum part, replace it with a high temperature rubber elbow and does not give problems until now.

    • @bsdubois
      @bsdubois 4 роки тому

      Graham Bate I don’t know how it is down under now. I started to purchase one at the dealer. Their replacement was all aluminum. Is your thermostat housing (front section with radiator hose) aluminum? I found the rectangular body (that attaches to the head with four bolts) made out of aluminum for about $20.00 on Amazon. My Daughter found her part on Amazon. I can ask her for the part number and where she found it. Her Cruze is the LS with the 1.8L normally aspirated Engine.
      Best of luck. Cheers from the States!

    Thanks very much for this video! How long did it take you to complete this job? I just got hit with a $112 labor charge ($30/hr) and I smell bs. I'm thinking this can take about an hour or two max for a pro? Thanks again!

      Just remember that vacuum tubing or this case he called it a hose, is brittle, becareful that actually it can break alot of mechanics wont tell you this when it breaks or they break it which it will add another 2 hrs of labor plus 20 to 30 dollars in parts he is the first person I actually seen that it didn't break when changing the housing

    • @bsdubois
      @bsdubois 4 роки тому

      I am a home mechanic and am in my 60’s. It required about 1 hour for the housing replacement. The price per hour you listed is not bad. My dealer wanted $150.00 for the part and $300.00 for three hours labor. I had to stop and go to the dealer for the damn hose and I purchased a new “O” Ring for the metal pipe under the thermostat. Remember a gallon of the orange antifreeze and a gallon of distilled water. This gives you 2 gallons NA of 50%, or, you can buy the 50% out of the bottle and pay nearly double.
