    Does the check engine turn on with the low temp thermostat?

    • @amedsoprano
      @amedsoprano  3 роки тому

      No, whit this mod it doesn't. However if you remove the thermostat core completely it will. There's a threshold in the ECU, I believe if it doesn't gets past 70°c after a certain time of running it will throw a CEL.

    And how long as this worked for my car ran under temperature for like 6 months and I started not burning fuel correctly has this happened to you bc my tstat don't open till around 226 and I think that is way to high also... And also the fan do t ever run on your car? What about if you turn the ac on them is it to cold?

    Hi, may I ask what is the different between replacing a 15psi cap vs keeping the original 20psi cap?

    • @amedsoprano
      @amedsoprano  2 місяці тому +1

      The cap regulates the pressure of the entire cooling system, by lowering it there's less force pushing outwards in every single part of the system thus less stress. You're also technically decreasing the ability of the water to go over its boling point without it boiling, but with the combination of thermostat and cap I've never seen anything over 97°C even when trashing the car heavily, revving and attempting burnouts.
      the boiling point of a 50/50 mix at 15 psi is 126°c so I'm well under the safety margin.
      20 psi would be 135°c which is necessary with the original tstat that operates at 110~115°c

      @@amedsoprano the previous owner of my 2017 Chevy Trax actually removed the spring of the thermostat completey, leaving only the core remains. He ran it for years, I think. I've just replaced a new one and notice that the temperature is too high, now the car often run around 100°C to ~108°C. I'll try to find the cap you show in the video and order the dorman thermostat as well. Its really hot in Vietnam this summer 🥵

    because my cooling fan comes on at 221 Fahrenheit

    • @amedsoprano
      @amedsoprano  2 роки тому +1

      That's ECU controlled. You'll have to get a tune for that but if your car never reaches that temperature there's no need for the fan to kick in

    • @amedsoprano
      @amedsoprano  2 роки тому +1

      @@saifsaid6705 the thermostat is basically a wax slug with a heater built in. The amount of wax determines the temperature it needs to push the plunger and open the t-stat. The ECU can send power to the heater and open the t-stat whenever it wants to, but if the coolant around it is already warmer than the opening temperature it will open by itself. So no need for a tune

    These plastic cars aren't built for this kind of very high pressure and high temps. I own two cruzes one 1.4 and 1.8. Both had leaks from coolant overflow bottles (never had to replace coolant bottles in any of other cars), bulging radiator hoses and cracking plastic coolant outlets. I believe this is a good mod which I am going to add to my 1.4 (I don't care saving few pennies on gas but replacing expensive parts). If you have one for 1.8 let us know. THx

    GM tech here, just to let you know, the stats are all the same, when you see the temp open number advertised on the stat, that is a lie, that is what the car is programmed to open the stat at, the stat is 100% controlled by the ECU, why they have 2 water sensors, there is no water controlled wax in any of them. This mod won't change anything. You'll either have to remove OE stat for a traditional water temp controlled one (3D print custom housing) add a tone to delete OE temp and codes set to desired temp to open, or will have to manually control it by plugging in a PWM set to desired temp after scoping it and leaving another sensor plugged in to OE connector as to not set a bias code.
    EDIT I should say first before i put foot in mouth that that is for the US however, i don't know about the rest of the world if GM did something different, but for any Trax, Volt, Cruze, Sonic...ECT with the 85Ci (1.4) in the US, they all use the same thermostat.

    • @amedsoprano
      @amedsoprano  Рік тому +2

      Every single thermostat in the world works the same, it's a wax filled piston of sorts. when the wax heats up and melts it expands pressing on the plunger which in term pushes on the sealing part of the t-stat. The only difference with modern cars is the addition of a small ceramic heater within the piston which will heat the wax on command instead of letting the water heat it up. You can open it whenever you want(or the ECM rather) but you can't close it if the water is hot.

    • @joshausterlitz3798
      @joshausterlitz3798 Рік тому

      @@amedsoprano That's what the Chevy Cavalier and Cobalt had yes, but not the Trax, Volt, Cruze, Sonic ECT... uses, it's 100% controlled by the ECM on those. If you unplug the connector on top of the thermostat, it will never come open and will eventually overheat. Just cut one open and you will see.

    • @amedsoprano
      @amedsoprano  Рік тому +1

      @@joshausterlitz3798 why don't you follow your own advice and unplug one while at operating temperature.
