What I've learned is I feel there is some secret formula to these titles and thumbnails...Big text (less than 3 words), something eye-catching to go along with the text that makes you wonder... certain thumbnails I post just naturally do better, and I've learned to create almost all of my thumbnails in that similar way and now most of the videos do pretty well. There's definitely a trick to thumbnails that is learned with time!

Hey!! Thank you so much for this! Recently my channel has been dropping on views a lot, and I decided to check this video out to see what I was doing wrong. And you actually pointed out a few things I do which are big mistakes.. taking 5 or less minutes to make a title and a thumbnail, because you get so tired from recording and editing a video (for hours usually), and spend little time on what is important! Another, the intro to the video! From now on, whenever I upload, I will make sure I use your tips!! Thank you!
The mindset shift required to do things in the correct order can be tough. But believe me it is SO WORTH IT!!! Listen to Rob. Don't turn on your camera until you have your title and thumbnail ready. THIS IS THE WAY!
Big facts! I'm a gaming/gaming tutorial channel, and even though some of my biggest viewed videos have no proper thumbnail, I'm still rewiring my thinking to properly sit down and think of multiple ideas for my thumbnails and video titles.
For me and my channel at the stage it is, this is your best video so far Rob. Which is why I have stopped editing my next video and gone back to the thumbnail. Next year I take on a new member of staff purely for thumbnail creation.... ( My Son, who created my first 6 thumbnails that are still the best performing ones!! - He's got a certificate from big school in that sort of thing)
Great advice. I now make all thumbnails before I write the video. If I can't make a great thumbnail I don't make the video (as I have hundreds of topics to choose from).
Oh, this definitely. I spend a couple days on a few clips and never touch the video again until a few months later. This is why it takes months to do one single video for me
I'm starting to get the hang of thumbnails and titles. My video shooting needs improvement, and so does my storytelling. I think this video is has me more interested in diving into the storytelling improvement I need. I do mostly how-to videos so it's not like a Mr. Beast storyline (honestly have never watched any of his videos but I know about them from channels that study his success). Anyway, you're presentation on this makes more sense to me than coming up with a "storyline." Thank you!
second movement is on your sliver plaque, top shelf furthest to the right. I maybe focusing too hard on the wrong things on this video haha. Great content so far, I'm only at 8 subs and pretty low engagement. Hopefully your tips can help boost that! :D
Great vid Rob really useful...and of course everything you say in the video is what you are doing cleverly in this video itself. Love it. I did not find the pea when it moved... 😅
Been working on exactly what you said, and spent twice as long on thumbnails (getting different angles in captures) and making them half as complicated. *fingers crossed*. Thanks for all the great advice!
Great suggestions for small creators like us. I do follow some of them, like: I record the complete tutorial and then make the intro video in which I explain what I am going to teach. I do spend a lot of time making thumbnails.
Honestly there are so many advice channels on how to grow your channel. Sometimes it's all so conflicting. I don't even know anymore. I feel like I should stop worrying about channel growth and just keep uploading things I am interested in or passionate about and whatever happens, happens
Same here. I don't mind getting poor views on my videos, if I get 50 or 60 views I'm even fine with that. Hell, I'm quite happy even if some of them did have 17 views to begin with. I think its more about putting out the content you want than worrying about the numbers imho.
Nah, nobody wants to work for nothing. Making content hoping it does well, and it never does, is discouraging and you will eventually give up- its just a matter of time. UA-cam algorithm sucks and its clear youtube doesnt care about new creators (they only push the big corporate channels)
Thanks man.. today has been extremely tough. I’m in a battle with my self as a gaming content creator with no views and no direction of what game to choose next. I’m hanging on by a thread then my wife surprised me with a new backdrop she ordered. Between your comment and her backdrop, I’m amped to start a new series and pay no mind to not having viewers and just be me and enjoy my original passion for gaming which is why I started in the first place. Thanks I needed to vent.
Yeah, I am trying to get better with my thumbnails. I think it’s because as a viewer, I look more at a title than a thumbnail. I need to put myself in the audience’s shoes. I did actually manage to hit the daily thumbnail limit you talked about in another video. I just changed one video’s thumbnail but uploaded two future scheduled videos and gave them thumbnails. However, once I tried to give a live stream a new thumbnail it wouldn’t let me until the next day, so I guess 3 is the limit. I never thought that would happen to me.
I think we're all guilty of one or two mistakes mentioned in this video 😅 Being a creator is an overall skill we can only master by doing, doesn't matter how goofy you are when you start, just keep doing it and you'll get there! Keep going fellow youtubers!
As someone whos been doing UA-cam for 2 years on and off there are a couple things that I think are very important. Consistency is key, find yourself a schedule. I've found that biweekly or once a month is the sweet spot for video uploads but it could depend on your content and energy. Niche is definitely important; as much as you want to do what you want it could be oversaturated leading to low views and engagement. Uniqueness; just like the last point if there's nothing that shines in your content compared to everyone else doing the same genre then it will be endlessly harder to get noticed, this was one thing that worked for me as no person in my niche did content of my caliber and style in terms of quality. Thumbnails as said in the video are very important, I usually take a picture of whatever is in my video and try not to make clickbait. If you follow these tips and put good work into your videos I can assure you that growth will definitely come your way!
You made a strong comment! Oh my! I don't make thumbnails and I've been doing all of these wrong. What I aso don't do anything when the video is ending such as clickable related uploaded videos. Somehow I feel I am not alone when it comes to being overloaded when it comes to learning to make videos. some of us get eager to make videos and uploading them, when in the first place we should be learning from the pros like you. Thank you VidIQ for making this and so many more educative videos on how not to make this mistakes.
oooo I get told to plan the thumbnail and title first but my content is gaming so I don't actually know what I am going to be encountering in the game until it is happening. I barely script as my videos are quite casual and fun so I don't know how I would plan the game? I am assuming this third point might not apply to me, but I wonder how it might? Maybe going into a game with a purpose or goal in mind. 🤔🤔 thanks for the advice, I am understanding more and more that thumbnails and titles are essential and should work in tandem with one another! 🤩
This is so helpful, I am guilty of going straight into introducing myself which is possibly why my views are so poor! I will definitely be taking your advice and giving a little teaser of what was promised in the thumbnail first then introduce from now on- small change but hopefully better results, thank you so much :)
Having a niche is important, but I think having a niche in an esoteric industry is even harder. Even with hundreds of pieces of content. These instructional videos have been paramount in updating our UA-cam strategy, looking forward to implementing them as we move forward!
finally, an actual useful comment, the comment sections in videos like this keeps repeating the same old comments like "to anyone who's reading this ____________________" and it's getting annoying
HI Rob, you gave us two thumbnails to choose and our reason for it. I choose the B option because the thumbnail is simple, clear and straight forward. But the other one has a lot of words and I don't like reading too much and I would just skip if I see it on UA-cam
thumbnails are definitely my least favourite part of making a video, i usually end up chucking something together in under a minute and hoping it’s enough. going to try doubling that time to a *massive* two minutes of work haha. grateful for the timing of this video as i’ve started so recently:)
You shiuld definitely spend at least 10 minutes making and editing your thumbnail No Offense, but your thumbnails seem boring and bland, it makes me feel like I'm looking at thumbnails from 2014..which would've worked better then but it definitely doesn't now. What I suggest is spending your time in thumbnails and shoeing then to others for second opinions, maybe even watching a few videos on how to make a good thumbnail.
I just recently found how important the first 30 seconds are after seeing the “60% of viewers still watch at 30 seconds” and if I make more videos I’ll definitely pay attention to this much more and will try my best to make people keep watching that part of the video.
The way I see it, you have to think of it as a journey for the viewer, as you mentioned, Rob, but between them first seeing the video thumbnail, going all the way to the moment they finish the entire video. Our goal as creators looking for growth should be to make that journey as easy as possible for the audience, and making it very simple to reach the end of that video for most viewers.
I released my first video and wondered what I could improve on. I found this video. I have a terrible thumbnail, long title and no impressions. Thanks for the advice. The content is pointless if you drag nobody in!💪
Rule No.1 Never give up Rule No.2 Be good at editing Rule No.3 Don't let your mood fall cuz no one is viewing remember that you only just started the video Rule No.4 Make sure your creative so you can imagine thumbnail and video that you want And last Rule No.5 Make sure that your dream is to become a youtuber cuz without a dream there won't be any success cuz you will easily give up
You hit the nail on the head for me lol. I don’t take any time on my thumbnail or titles. I did just start and only have 3 videos on my channel. For the future though, I’m going to spend more time on impression and click!
I watch your videos religiously and find your advice very helpful. My biggest problem, nonetheless, is CONSISTENCY. I have a lot of video ideas but struggle a lot, when it comes to filming and editing (in other words, finishing the project and showing content to people). Any advice on the routine/mindset I need to adopt to help myself do some action? 😩 Thank you!
I am having this exact same problem right now! I’m trying to just focus on one video at a time but then I overwhelm myself wanting to do it all at once and nothing gets done :/.
Dude, you are so so so so so right! I I’m in the process of reviving. My dad UA-cam channel had tremendous success based on eye catching engaging thumbnail, illustrations and catchy thought-provoking titles. It has made all the difference and I’ve got the analytics to prove it if you’re boring thumbnails I can tell you from personal standpoint, they do not work as well as when you spend time on it.
Hey vidIQ! I really like your videos and they help me a ton! (i haven’t actually posted anything yet, but I have made some videos and they are privated) But a common thing I always struggle with in my videos is my commentary. I find that it’s either mind numbingly boring, or I sound like I’m trying to hard. I know practice makes perfect with stuff like this, but are there any tips you have to improve at this area a little faster?
Hey I appreciate you! I am a small channel, I like making edits of my favorite tv shows and such but one thing I have been struggling with is my thumbnails, Idk if I'm doing it wrong, but when I press "Upload thumbnail" I always put my thumbnail there but it's too big it says. It can't be bigger than 2mb according to the error I get, so I can't really upload thumbnails anymore cus they all reach over 2mb
I actually came across your channel just now and I am so glad I did. I have around 7.8k subs and only a small part of them watches and comments on my videos. This is going to be such a HUGE help! I am so sticking around to better improve my channel.
Hey, just wanted to let you know, the fact that you're still watching these videos and have 221K subs is super inspiring. I guess it just goes to show that this stuff actually works
Video idea: "analizing the best thumbnails of the biggest channels across the communities" For example art channels - Zhc, LavenderTowne, Ethan Becker Gaming - Markiplier, Pewdiepie, Kubzscouts Etc. I realise that it's a difficult video to make but I Imagine it will prove to be of great value to all of us ^^
its actually really easy to analyze their thumbnals and you can even do a side-by-side of thumbnails of popular channels vs thumbnails of "eh" channels Eventually you know what is a good thumbnail and what is a bad thumbnail without even thinking.
Thank you so much! I’m a DJ starting to upload mixes and it’s been so disheartening so far barely getting any views after spending DAYS making a great mix with great visuals and thumbnail. Will keep the head down and take all these tips into account going forward. Hopefully I get them seen one day 😢🙏🏼
I'm definitely going to try these tips out. I totally feel like I'm in a rut... I know I'm creating decent content, but it's just a matter of fixing these mistakes. Thank you for this video. It should help a lot. I'm being positive!
I think a big thing people are afraid to do Is change thumbnails and titles after the video drops. If you're video starts poorly don't be afraid to experiment. You have nothing to lose
I'm a new channel creator. I love Angry Grandma. Everyday I try something different. I will keep watching these idea videos. My stuff is funny. I am confident it is and it will get better and better. I have limited resources at this time. Rock bottom is where it starts. Right now I'm pulling myself off the bottom. I refuse to lose!
The consistency is very difficult for me since I have other things going on in my life, but I love to talk about things that interests me. Which is movies, therapy, stories, anything where I feel like I can talk or do voice overs even. Maybe I'm just not that entertaining because I don't yell or sound excited lol. But idk, I don't get much feedback so idk what it is I'm doing wrong
Best wishes to everyone trying to grow their channel! Super helpful. I’m basically back to square one with this creepypasta/narration channel as my old original content was asmr (from many years ago). I’ll try without an intro 😁
The trick of moving the little thing around the screen and telling viewers to find it, causing them to rewind and spend more time on the video is a great tactic. Are the more videos with tips like that ?
3:17 i got it :D it moves to the left haha. I tottaly agree with thumbnails and i drastically change most of my first videos thumbs to focus on what its all about, and also, imagine "if was me visiting a channel like this, would i click it?" for the answers where i get a "no" i use that new tool of three thumbs with great results, some of my low count visiting videos were bring back to life ♥
Great tips! I do make my titles before I start with the video. But I should try to make the thumbnail before the video and spend more time making them.
Hello VidIQ, I want to know about one thing. Currently in my UA-cam analytics it shows, impressions- 2.5K ⬆️846%, impressions CTR- 16.7% ⬆️102% and UA-cam search 83.4% and every other traffic sources are maximum 4.6% or below that. I want to understand what does this data represent? What I need to change, keep, or improvise? It would be better if you can tell me about this. I still trust your team and love you
@@vidIQ yes one of my videos fled away. It was a meme video in which I showed how Halo Infinite can't run in my laptop. It was 1:43 minutes long and currently having 521 views. One and only viral videos in my channel
This is very helpful! I always have a title in mind before creating a video and had an idea for the thumbnail when I'm filming. It makes everything easier!
A lot of good info in this video for sure and things we will be changes and evaluating on your channels for sure. "Also the pea is by the subscriber counter on the fist move"
I upload thing such as leaks as fast as possible so that my videos can top search results (it really does, sometimes, at least top 3) and high search traffic brings good amount of views but otherwise I try replicate thumbnails which work for similar channels in my own way and it works mostly, ur videos are very helpful :)) And short titles ofc are important
The thumbnail issue is a huge thing, I've started spending so much time on my thumbnail and titles and my channel has got 10x the view in the last month compared to the previous one
Wow that was way more than 9 min of value!! The foundations of each video! Also, you got over 100% view percentage from me, had to rewind a couple times to find the pea lol
That was great advice in terms of the thumbnail and using similar titles. I've always known that but not in that detail. Great video! Thank you for this information,
Doing most of the work on my old iPad mostly discouraged me from making actual thumbnails, so I always just went with a still from the video that looked ok. I have a few ideas for thumbnails of both past and future videos, but I’ve always been nervous at actually making them since I’m not sure how they will turn out and if they will be even half as good as what I originally thought of
@@Cookingwithapril AWWW thank you SO much you have no idea how much I needed that this morning. Just a few days ago I had 48 subscribers, and then it dropped to 47; you literally just made my day by bringing it back up again :)
@@Mikelectrik don't stress the subscribers you lose. I did too. But if you keep plugging away it keeps going. Shorts help a lot with subs so grab some awesome moments of your game play to lure peoples interest in. It's easier to get UA-cam to push shorts than long-form vids
Gee. I think you figured it out. I watch a lot of your videos and your competitors videos, and there has been some useful content, but I've never been convinced until TODAY that you folks actually understand the issue that small channels face. But apparently YOU do. You're the first of your kind to state it clearly. Now, who don't you tell your buddies at you tube who maintain the algorithm to figure out how to FIND the GOOD small channel content ? But you probably won't do that, because then nobody would care(as much) about your content, because the algo would actually do the work that it's supposed to do, but doesn't do for small channels, only for big channels(like yours). regards, Dan
This Video is helpful for someone like me who is not very computer savvy. I’m 87 and decided to have a go at putting a video on UA-cam on how to create multicolored text using Nero Platinum. The video is crude. I did get 80 views in 2 months. One of my mistakes is I didn’t realize thumbnails were important. Didn’t even bother making one. Just used the one selected by UA-cam. It’s never too old to learn, so it’s back to the drawing board and have a go at making a better thumbnail.
3 years in and I'm guilty of a lot of these. These last few videos I've been focusing on the thumbnail and beginning of the video more than anything and now that i know that the title is just as important, I'll have to implement that. Even though I have an animated intro and love it, it may be time to retire it. Gonna work hard to create a story that keeps people engaging. Also one thing i think people shouldn't do that i made a mistake with was Including a conclusion like you're writing an essay. It hurt a lot of my videos. I'm gonna keep this video in my favorites. Thanks VidIQ!
One of the biggest mistakes I see people do is not start their channel cos they think everything is so expensive. You don't need to spend thousands to get started. You can literally start making videos with your smart phone and a decent mic and achieve some surprisingly good results. The biggest mistakes you can do is not start a channel!
I tried the simple thumbnails I got no where. I tried the thumbnail style I like personally and got no where. So I'll just stick with what I like and be happy that I'm not going to get anywhere. Great video though :)
I really appreciate this content. Our channel has been growing lately and I want to start making better thumbnails and intros even more now that I've watched this. Our content is pretty niche as you have to 1. Love dogs and 2. Be interested in the barkless kind. I have often equated watching our videos to sitting and watching someone's home movies. It's a real challenge to make it interesting for the viewer. I really appreciate the tips to help improve things.
Thank you for the advice. We want to grow our channel to 10k subs this next year and our thumbnails definitely come last. We will be changing that up to focus on that 1 second they get a chance to see our thumbnail.

The mindset shift required to do things in the correct order can be tough. But believe me it is SO WORTH IT!!! Listen to Rob. Don't turn on your camera until you have your title and thumbnail ready. THIS IS THE WAY!
Yes
For Realz!!
I feel that advice can go for certain niches, but some gaming niches won't require to do that.
Big facts! I'm a gaming/gaming tutorial channel, and even though some of my biggest viewed videos have no proper thumbnail, I'm still rewiring my thinking to properly sit down and think of multiple ideas for my thumbnails and video titles.
I just started a few weeks ago and I had the same problem. Im gonna experiment all this and see how it goes…….
Whoever is reading this, believe in yourself that you can do it. We will be successful too!
I think I speak for everyone who read this when I say thank you :D
Great advice. I now make all thumbnails before I write the video. If I can't make a great thumbnail I don't make the video (as I have hundreds of topics to choose from).
Biggest mistake is procrastinating and making things a bigger deal than they are =) Just go with the flow and create a lot! :D
yess for sure, sometimes it takes me weaks to edit
Recommendation system? Good luck over coming that obstacle if you don't post enough videos lol.

Yo that's awesome! Keep the hard work up! Can I ask you a question? What editing software do you use? They are awesome
Is it working for you?
Too much text in your thumbnails
@AP Moments; It worked like a charm for CTR. Use to have messy thumbnails, but chopped some aspects down a bit and CTR increased noticeably.
thank You vidIQ Team
Great suggestions for small creators like us. I do follow some of them, like: I record the complete tutorial and then make the intro video in which I explain what I am going to teach. I do spend a lot of time making thumbnails.
This is a great idea indeed!
2:44 Lol I started doing that as soon as I started my channel. I write down all the titles before even planning the video
How do you get that many subscribers???

Honestly there are so many advice channels on how to grow your channel. Sometimes it's all so conflicting. I don't even know anymore. I feel like I should stop worrying about channel growth and just keep uploading things I am interested in or passionate about and whatever happens, happens
Same here. I don't mind getting poor views on my videos, if I get 50 or 60 views I'm even fine with that. Hell, I'm quite happy even if some of them did have 17 views to begin with. I think its more about putting out the content you want than worrying about the numbers imho.
my thinking exactly honestly i would much rather have people watching me for me and not just because i'm following trends
Nah, nobody wants to work for nothing. Making content hoping it does well, and it never does, is discouraging and you will eventually give up- its just a matter of time. UA-cam algorithm sucks and its clear youtube doesnt care about new creators (they only push the big corporate channels)

To the person who is reading this, don't give up on your channel keep going, its going to be better . 💯

Thank u
Cool
🙏
Love your music Chicane
thank you, i just have a really hard time finding what’s unique abt me and my channel like i have no idea haha
2 years and 800 subs
Also depends on what type of content you create. Some topics are just going to be harder to become successful at it.
WE HAVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF SUBS
You nailed it!!! I have been spending double the time on my thumbs and titles, but...I see the value of spending even more. Thank you sir.
It definitely pays I never thought my thumbnail would end up here keep grinding 💪🏽
Watch many streamers channels and see what they do. Since they don't plan the script either
This is so helpful, I am guilty of going straight into introducing myself which is possibly why my views are so poor! I will definitely be taking your advice and giving a little teaser of what was promised in the thumbnail first then introduce from now on- small change but hopefully better results, thank you so much :)
I love how cute your video thumbnails look
Lol they are @me.1575
Having a niche is important, but I think having a niche in an esoteric industry is even harder. Even with hundreds of pieces of content. These instructional videos have been paramount in updating our UA-cam strategy, looking forward to implementing them as we move forward!

HI Rob, you gave us two thumbnails to choose and our reason for it. I choose the B option because the thumbnail is simple, clear and straight forward. But the other one has a lot of words and I don't like reading too much and I would just skip if I see it on UA-cam
I appreciate you liking my thumbnail I definitely agree with you 🙏🏽

thumbnails are definitely my least favourite part of making a video, i usually end up chucking something together in under a minute and hoping it’s enough. going to try doubling that time to a *massive* two minutes of work haha. grateful for the timing of this video as i’ve started so recently:)
You shiuld definitely spend at least 10 minutes making and editing your thumbnail
No Offense, but your thumbnails seem boring and bland, it makes me feel like I'm looking at thumbnails from 2014..which would've worked better then but it definitely doesn't now.
Thank you for your tips and strategies! I guess I gotta work on better thumbnails and titles to make my channel better
All you have to do is stay away from looking at the numbers. Keep grinding and don't give up. Eventually you'll see the numbers growing.
Starring at my numbers is an addiction for me!! 😣
@@AmberNikky me too🥺
The way I see it, you have to think of it as a journey for the viewer, as you mentioned, Rob, but between them first seeing the video thumbnail, going all the way to the moment they finish the entire video. Our goal as creators looking for growth should be to make that journey as easy as possible for the audience, and making it very simple to reach the end of that video for most viewers.

Rule No.1 Never give up
Rule No.2 Be good at editing
Rule No.3 Don't let your mood fall cuz no one is viewing remember that you only just started the video
Rule No.4 Make sure your creative so you can imagine thumbnail and video that you want
And last Rule No.5 Make sure that your dream is to become a youtuber cuz without a dream there won't be any success cuz you will easily give up
More like never gonna give you up for No.1.

I watch your videos religiously and find your advice very helpful. My biggest problem, nonetheless, is CONSISTENCY.

Video idea: "analizing the best thumbnails of the biggest channels across the communities"
For example art channels - Zhc, LavenderTowne, Ethan Becker
Gaming - Markiplier, Pewdiepie, Kubzscouts
Etc.
I realise that it's a difficult video to make but I Imagine it will prove to be of great value to all of us ^^
its actually really easy to analyze their thumbnals and you can even do a side-by-side of thumbnails of popular channels vs thumbnails of "eh" channels
Eventually you know what is a good thumbnail and what is a bad thumbnail without even thinking.
Thank you so much! I’m a DJ starting to upload mixes and it’s been so disheartening so far barely getting any views after spending DAYS making a great mix with great visuals and thumbnail.

3:30 That really helped put things into perspective about the importance of thumbnails.

A lot of good info in this video for sure and things we will be changes and evaluating on your channels for sure. "Also the pea is by the subscriber counter on the fist move"
I upload thing such as leaks as fast as possible so that my videos can top search results (it really does, sometimes, at least top 3) and high search traffic brings good amount of views but otherwise I try replicate thumbnails which work for similar channels in my own way and it works mostly, ur videos are very helpful :))

The thumbnail issue is a huge thing, I've started spending so much time on my thumbnail and titles and my channel has got 10x the view in the last month compared to the previous one
As a small channel trying to still get my feet off the ground I appreciate all the info this is something I definitely needed to listen too 😁
Wow that was way more than 9 min of value!!
@@Mikelectrik don't stress the subscribers you lose. I did too. But if you keep plugging away it keeps going. Shorts help a lot with subs so grab some awesome moments of your game play to lure peoples interest in. It's easier to get UA-cam to push shorts than long-form vids
@@ImVersetile You do a phenomenal job with those thumbnails man! thanks for the comment and just wanna say I'm proud of you for growing your channel!
I still struggle with titling and thumbnailing but I will be playing with programs to find my groove
I also noticed my videos with the simplest thumbnails have more views than the complicated ones. Thanks for the advice. 👍
I mean most my videos cost at least 20£ to make and overtime it's actually quite expensive 🤣
Yeah, I have this problem too, but I didn't understand why my video got so much views, and, as you said, it was about the thumbnail. So thankyou!
I tried the simple thumbnails I got no where.

So I'll just stick with what I like and be happy that I'm not going to get anywhere.
