Shrugging is lifting your shoulders up towards your ears. You're doing it right if you see your upper traps (on either side of your neck) pop up during the movement. Pulling your shoulder blades together is just like what you saw in the video - take a band (or similar object), hold it in front of you, and stretch it apart, keeping your elbows slightly bent - you don't want triceps doing the work. You'll feel the middle of your back tensing and squeezing together if you're doing it right.
I need this! I've been lifting 9 months (I'm 165 lbs); my squat is approaching 300, my deadlift is 355, but my bench is still a paltry 205. I've been making progress with everything else, so I'm afraid to change what I'm doing, but I've been stuck at my bench for a while. I can't wait to try this stuff out tomorrow!
Thanks for these videos coach, I'm just starting out and was getting some shoulder pain and I feel this will help. Any tips on adjusting your bench to fit your anatomy? Short person v Tall etc.
Gordon Lim Shrugging would elevate the shoulder, ultimately not fixing the issue. Whereas retracting the shoulder packs the shoulders back and giver a stable platform to press from
I really hate studying form. Why does shit have to be so complicated? Been lifting for years but my best lifts have been very very low for the timeframe. Looking this over because maybe I'm fucking things up. Fixed my deadlift but I can't squat in a straight line. I also currently have a low bench where everyone else does it in no time at all. Bench: 220 Squat: 300 Deadlift: 380
I've found that technique videos can only take you so far, at a certain point you have to learn the mechanics of your own body and adjust/combine the 2.
You ask, "What are you trying to achieve, strength or body building?" Does you advice or instruction change if you are more interested in aesthetics? If so, how?
Outstanding benching system. Can't believe I only stumbled on this from a random reddit thread. I would gladly pay for a workshop like this.

@@tropicalpalmtree Dave looks more like Liev Schreiber's older brother if he had one. Almost has the same cadence and tone in his voice too.

Thank you for this series
Bench Day today so.... Watching this for the second time to get my form better
Can you explain the difference between shrugging and pulling the shoulder blades together? and how you make sure you are doing it right?
Do you think using a machine is detrimental to form and shoulders?
No I do not. I am horriable. But with watching your videos have made me a better bencher. Mabey one day I will get stronger. Lol. Thanks Dave.
What is the difference between shrugging and pulling the shoulder blades together? And why is it wrong to shrug?

tell your friends with equally shitty benches and share it out
@@eliteftsofficial i will :D
so you think you lift old man?
I like using free weights when possible so I can work the stabilizer muscles during a given exercise. Just my humble, non-professional opinion.

Jesus. How much fucking weight was that?
Yeah Ohio State!
