Why I REGRET buying an EV!

  • After deciding to sell my Hyundai Ioniq electric in December, it's been five months, and I didn't get a single phone call or message, regardless of what I set the price at (within reason). So unfortunately I find myself having joined the multitude of people who are out of pocket or stuck in the automotive version of negative equity because they followed government advice and bought an EV.

How can you say “it’s not fair”? You didn’t have to buy the car, and unless you were looking at EV’s with rose-coloured glasses, there has been plenty of evidence to indicate their atrocious depreciation, among other things. Make decisions, live with the consequences. It’s not a matter of fairness.

Modern BEV and hybrids have hardly been around for more than 1 decade. And where did you get your "4x more efficient" statement from? They are not *that* much more efficient than ICE cars, and even if they were that is completely negated by needing to waste so much more of your time charging, and just finding a charger that is not only available but actually functional in the first place. Wrong. An Australian 2 petrol car household will spend a massive AUD $84,000 with operating and maintenance costs over 20 years. Moreover, 86 tonnes of CO2 will be emitted as well. EVs typically last for 120k mls before the battery needs looking at, which usually turns the vehicle to scrap because of the replacement cost. £14k as a sale starting price is reasonable depreciation for an EV that is 5 months older than the £19k purchase point.

I'm not updated on the latest EV tech but I know lfp and blade batteries have progressed and I'm not repeating old info of batteries spontaneously combusting, thermal runaway etc etc.
I also ride motorbikes and know how cliquey and douchey tribalism gets, especially between sportbikes and cruisers. It's very cringey. Even the Harley Davison HOG ownership have shunned their own with the Harley EV.
It's funny to me how people just follow and repeat just because they don't like something, sometimes it's something they don't know all or anything about it, and even worse when some people don't like something but don't know why they don't like it lol. Sheep.

Leaf owners where I live have found out that after 5 years Nissan is washing their hands of them and more Leaf’s are turning into driveway bricks. The culprit of that scenario is the main battery. The pathetic range on that car drops to nothing when a cell gives out. Nissan does not supply replacements for cars over five years old. Third party suppliers are reluctant to get into that small market so a useless parts car is what you get. I can go out and find a 20 year old rebuilt 302 for $1600 and drop it into my 20 year old 😊Mustang to get another 250,000 miles out of it. That is how you get longevity. After market parts.😅

Buyers of your Ioniq will know it has no warranty, being a private sale, which for a EV would be exceedingly risky. You may well end up selling the car and still have outstanding loan payments to make. Running an ageing EV would be risky too, as car manufacturers usually only provide spare parts for 7 years after that model's production ends. If a car was made in great volumes that attracts third party parts manufacturers, but EV's would be made in comparatively low numbers so unlikely to attract such third party interest.

Traditionally motor vehicle manufacturers withdraw spare parts support at 7 years after that model ends, so when the computer fails or the circuitry to drive the electric motors fail your neighbour will have to rely on third party spare parts suppliers, if indeed any exist for what would be a low initial volume car.
EV batteries are built into the floor pan of the car, so what was the fitting and commissioning cost? Maybe your neighbour hasn't owned up to that yet.

In their small print Insurers say that it is your DUTY to tell them of any changes to THEIR risk, otherwise in the event of a claim, they will deny liability. Usually I only drove maximum 30 miles every day and ocassionaly drove over 100 miles. For such range, there is no difficulty to my car even in winter. Since I only used the charging pod at my home to charge my EV, my fuel cost is only 1 fifth or even 1 sixth of a normal ICE car. According to the DCCEEW in a press release this past February, "Most of Australia's energy relies on traditional sources - non-renewable fossil fuels. Coal and gas accounted for around 70% of electricity generation in 2021." EVs have advantages, but reducing CO2 emissions to any significant extent is not one of them. (BTW - same here in the USA: 59% from coal and gas.)

@@flagmichael It depends on the vehicle type and usage assumptions. Those with older, less efficient cars and drive more will be polluting even more. Yes, phasing out petrol cars has a significant effect on emission reductions, especially when it comes to public health outcomes where 7 million people die worldwide each year due to pollution. The Australian Capital Territory (ACT), and especially the state of Tasmania, have been relying exclusively on renewable energy sources for many years now. The rest of the country will completely transition to renewables by the 2030s. Many Australians households are net carbon neutral as they have rooftop solar power, whereby most of the electricity they produce is consumed by the wider public.

What year is it? Is it the 28kWh battery I'm assuming with 210km range.

@@prophetsnake They cost more to buy, more to insure, and more to repair. They have short ranges, and long recharge times. It costs twice as much to charge an EV on the public charging network than it costs to buy diesel. Residuals are terrifying, they're a disaster for the environment, and they have a nasty habit of catching fire. Sounds pretty rubbish to me.

I don't want a car that can be tracked by the manufacturer. I don't want a car that the manufacturer can remotely update. I don't want a car that gathers data about me. I wouldn't buy a car that will become worthless when the first battery issue appears. I also don't want a car that might burn my house down. Lithium ion was not the right battery tech to use in cars. It's too expensive and too much of a fire risk. I'll stick with my 15 year old Honda which has never cost me a cent beyond standard servicing.

I'm a board member of a credit union in the U.S. We have taken huge losses on 1 or 2 year old Tesla's that have dropped over 50% in value in so short a time that we now require a 50% down payment and at least tier 2 credit. we would rather not finance them at all lf truth be known. the ones that we have had to repo we can't sell for anything close to whats owed on them. we send them to auction and write the rest off. EV's are a joke and a very bad investment. Buy a Jeep wrangler or a chevy truck. they hold value like mad. I own both.
