Learn to knit socks on 9" circular knitting needles.
In this tutorial we will walk through each step of knitting socks on 9" circulars including: casting on and setting up, 2 ways of knitting a heel flap and gusset (on the 9" AND using 2 DPNs), switching to Magic Loops for knitting the toe, and how to close up your toe using the Kitchener Stitch.
This tutorial accompanies a written pattern that can be purchased on Ravelry & Etsy. (Links below) In the tutorial I will be knitting a size medium from this pattern. If the amounts needed for Small or Large are different from the medium I will put the info at the bottom of the screen.
Pattern is written for Small(Medium, Large) - Circumference 8-9”(9-10”, 10-11”)
A Note on Sizes: The sizes listed are based on the foot circumference and not the foot length. I recommend choosing a size that will allow for 1-2 inches of negative ease to get the best fit. You will knit the sock to the length that you need in order to fit.
If you would like to purchase the written pattern to follow along it is available for only $2.00, you can do so here:

One day I'll have this memorized, but today is not that day. I have gone back to this video about a billion times while I'm doing my socks. I imagine it'll be like this for the next ten pairs. Then maybe I'll have this nailed down. But it's the best video out there for 9 inch circulars. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this outstanding tutorial.

Without a doubt this is the best sock-knitting video on the planet. Your timing, your sentence structure, your instruction leave nothing to chance or interpretation. If one is unable to knit a sock with this video then it would be better to forget about knitting socks.

I know you made this tutorial several years ago, but I can’t even begin to express my gratitude for the thorough and exceptional job you did! I have read numerous articles and books and really made a genuine effort to prepare myself, but I still felt unprepared to tackle sock knitting! Part of my confusion was about marker placement and part concerned equipment. Not only did you clear that up, but you explained the reasons for your choices and finally it all made sense to me! Thank you so much! Sincere best wishes to you and yours for a wonderful New Year!

You can get tendonitis from this style of yarn holding, especially when doing a lot of purl stitches. If you favour holding the yarn in your left hand, you should look at tutorials for the Norwegian purl, which eliminates the strain produced by constantly waving your index finger around. Many knitters choose to knit in the round because they don't like purling. But purling is just as easy as knitting if you learn to use an English style, holding the yarn in your right hand.

This was such a well explained tutorial, accompanied by clear visual pictures of each technique required. I am proud to post these socks on to my daughter, whose working travel in New Zealand has been prolonged by the pandemic, and she plans to wear them with her Roller Skating boots. This video and the successful result, has given me the confidence to purchase and invest in a variety of patterns for future socks, now that everyone else in the family would like a pair of hand knitted socks too. Omg, I mastered knitting on a 9” circular needle for the heel flap, heel turn, picking up the gusset stitches, decreasing back down to my starting number and then I finally figured out magic loop for my toes, thank you Kay for giving me the confidence in trying out a different method to knit socks, posting my finished socks into the sock camp FO thread as soon as the other toe and ends are sewn in, you rock!.

THANK YOU so much for taking the time to do this tutorial. One of my goals for a very long time has been to knit a pair of socks. I'd love to knit and crochet a few high quality staple wardrobe items instead of buying ready wear from the stores. Thanks to your very clear and well explained tutorial I will be able to accomplish one of my long time goals. I'll be heading over to your Etsy store to purchase your pattern as well. Be well and stay safe. Chao.

I just love to knit socks. And from this tutorial I will knit these techniques with no fear at all.... some day I hope knitting with an appropriate sock yarn, because we don't have these kind of yarn in Brazil.
    Thanks a lot

Sadly don’t get those yarns in Australia either,.. have to gauge every sock before making up n use an appropriate amount of stitches .. math nightmare!

@@markwilliams1824 sad! Just checked and roughly it would cost about £5 Stirling to send a 100g (1 ball of sock yarn) packet by standard delivery - not sure if that covers tax/custom fees. It’s been a while since I’ve bought “sock” yarn but I “think” a standard everyday ball is about £7 have seen sock yarn at ridiculous prices too £20+!

Yes, we have appropriate sock yarn in Brazil! It's "Fios da Fazenda" brand and we can find "Lã Merino Sock Superwash 4ply" in many colors. You can buy it at Bazar Horizonte www.bazarhorizonte.com.br/croche-e-trico/las-e-fios/fios-da-fazenda?PS=40

You are an excellent teacher as stated previously and I only wish I’d found you and knitting sooner. An avid crocheter for many years but knitting was very frightening to me! I love doing socks! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Kay! I only hope I can make as many socks as I have yarn at nearly 70 years old. 🤣😂

Iam new to socks haven’t made any to date … just bought your vanilla sock pattern and this is so helpful as I’m so nervous 😬 especially when I saw how tiny the needles are …. Well the first row omg 😳 that wasn’t easy . Because this tutorial is so good I will carry on knowing I’m through the hardest part . I will be so proud of myself if I manage this challenge.
Update made my first sock using this pattern and video tutorial thank you 🙏🏽.
Next sock I will cast on with straights for a few rows then transfer to 9” circulars as that was so difficult and caused me to have more stitches some how .

Hi Kay! For starters, thanks for this tutorial! It is the sock technique I've been hoping to see - like many knitters, I have admired sock knitters from afar for a very long time! But this year, was asked by a coworker if I could make her a pair of boot socks and did not want to disappoint her. I like using circular needles more than DPNs, and haven't YET used my smaller ones or made a full pair of socks from sock yarn, but I have used and am currently using my 5.5mm 9" circulars to make sweater sleeves, and I have the same problems as you. So either it's not just you or it's just us! Ever since I started using my 9" circulars I've guessed it's the fact that there's not much needle there to grip, and we are used to gripping onto our needles. I find myself knitting with just the very tips of my very sharp, pointy 5.5mms, which is not my normal knitting style at all because I'm usually fanatical about not dropping stitches. I know this tutorial is a few years old, but I've had my 9" circulars for several years and it never gets any easier to do the first row on them, so I just wanted to commiserate with you and thank you for making this tutorial!
