I am knitting now with the Kroy. I find it much heavier than other sick yarns I have used. On us1 (2.25) needles, the fabric is very dense. That being said, if I can get through the full pair, they will be warm and hard wearing.
Hey! Thanks so much for sharing your favorites! I did want to caution you about Cascade Heritage Sock... I mentioned your favorites to a friend, and she showed me two pairs of socks that she knit with that yarn a couple of years ago. The yarn did NOT wear well. It felted easily, even on a delicate cycle in cold water, and the soles wore through quickly. She has made LOTS of socks, and hasn't had that problem with other yarns. Like you, she thought it was great to knit with, but it did not stand the test of actual use. Just wanted you to know.
I've had skeins be *incredibly* tangled, too. I asked to have it wound once and it was such a mess, 3 of us sat at a table for an hour untangling it and eventually winding it. It was a memorable nightmare
HA! You must have gotten quite a collection! I bought 3 skeins of Hedgehog Fibres (which I have admired from afar for some time) and 2 skeins Cascade Heritage to try (particularly thinking heals and toes with the white and grey I purchased). @@Brinalea1031
I'm an Aussie, and definitely have some favourite local yarns to share. For budget sock yarn you can't beat Bendigo woollen mills or Nundle woollen mills. Bendigo has colour shifting sock yarns that look like spincycle. They are a little like regia, but softer to touch. Nundle does great solid colour sock yarn. It's thicker and softer than BWM. My favourite indie dyers are Hodgepodge, the Aussie wool store, Skein yarn, and skein sisters. I'd love to try circus tonic too, that's on my list.
One of my favourite US indie dyers is Tippy Tree Yarns in Colorado! She has such wonderful colours, from tonals to speckles and variegated. She also frequently has special collections inspired by an artist, a movie or tv show, or an author. Just lovely! Here in Canada, I absolutely love Alley Cat Yarns who is local to me in Ottawa: so many bases, a lot of different breeds to explore, just fun and exciting! I also am in awe of the wonderful deconstructed fades of Shirley Brian Yarns. All her colours are spectacular but her fades are exquisite and I absolutely buy some of them just for their names 😊 inspired by books, quotes and movies. Just amazing! Thanks for another great episode!
🤯 OMG - I have two half used skeins of JAWOLL in my stash (knitted a pair of childrens mittens years ago) and never knew there was reinforcement thread included. I just dug it out and checked and it is really there! It even sais so on the label. 😅 Blown away by this revelation! Thank you! I live in Germany so Lang Yarn is easy to get and not all that expensive. I'm going to use it more often now. 😊
Hey Summer :) Greetings from Germany! Lang Jawoll is definitely one of my favorite sock yarns and VERY affordable (4,95 € per skein in Germany). Fun fact: The expression "Jawoll" is part of German colloquial speech and expresses some sort of affirmation/ consent (historically used as "Jawohl!" in military speech, close to "Yes, sir/ma'am!"). AND Lang Jawoll sock yarn is also a wordplay in itself: ja = yes, Wolle = wool/yarn, jawoll = Yes! Alright! The first syllable "Ja" is pronounced like the "yu" in "yummy" and "woll" is pronounced like the "vol" in "volunteer". IPA [jaˈvɔl] P.S. I'm very happy that you decided to revive your YT channel
Summer.. I’m watching your older video on the designing around the leap day sock. I just have to say that you are the best. You make me laugh and enjoy time with you. I’m looking forward to more of your videos
I didn’t want this to end. I want to buy them all! I’m currently knitting your cider house socks. I’m getting better at cables as I go. One nearly done. Thank you!
I love your sense of color oh so much 💛 And YES All Creatures Great and Small! Its a feast for the eyes. Did you know the old show had a knitting contest for Tristan's vest?
HHF is what made me start knitting. I bought a stunning color and I loved it so much I knew it had to be on a project that would do it justice! My crochet pattern wasn’t showing it off enough, so I learned to knit and made my first pair of socks!!
Some favourite Aussie Indie Dyers: for more muted colours Fluff and Nonsense, Passioned Flower, for bright colours Wool and Works, Maximoo Yarns, for brights and pastels Rainbows and Sprinkles, for self striping Heathermaid and Half Baked Hand Dyed
I love the play on words of Jawoll. In German "jawohl" which is pronounced more or less the same means yes but a very emphatic/enthusiastic yes. The J has a Y sound.
Thank you for your podcast and recommendations. If you haven’t tried it yet the Malabrigo Ultimate Sock yarn is hands-down my favorite and wears very well and has lots of fun colors.
Knit Picks Stroll - Woo! Lol its my favorite yarn across the board for basically any purpose. Ive made socks and sweaters with it and I will make many more. I also love Cascade Heritage in the same way - ive knit socks and sweaters and they are all lovely. I think I prefer the colors of Stroll overall, but I love the wear of Heritage.
I live Hedgehog Fiber yarns too. Nothing like wearing hand knitted socks! I’m totally addicted to knitting socks & the beautiful sock yarns. Thank you for this video 🧶
Thank you so much for the information. I've been looking for good affordable yarns for knitting. Wool and company blew me away. Loved their site and yarns are gorgeous. Again, thank you and I will be watching more in the future.
I’m fixing to order two skins from Coates and Co. My granddaughter saw that picture of bright pink yarn and said she wanted a pair of socks in that color so there you go. I also found a beautiful blue for me. Thank you for the recommendations.
I just started knitting socks about a year ago and had already discovered both Knit Picks Stroll and Cascade Heritage yarns. Love them both. Was happy to have your confirmation.
Oh! Summer! Thank you so much for this video. I'm fairly new to sock knitting and I'm kinda on a small budget these days. I have tried a few different sock yarns from Michaels', JoAnn and Hobby Lobby. I've found that I'm a fan of Paton's Kroy Socks and Kroy Socks FX. Summer, your channel has quickly become one of my very favorite go tos for knitting and hangin' out. Your socks are what come to my mind when I think of "happy feet." ✌️💜🧶🧦
My favorite sock yarns are Knitpicks Stroll and das Mondschaf in Germany. They have the best base and beautiful colors. It is worth the shipping from Europe!
Thank you so much for this and all of your videos. I’ve been a fan for years and I’m so glad you are podcasting. I’ve got your book on preorder and I love love love all these yarns and sample socks you’ve been showing us. I’ve never been a solid sock knitter, I think I need the dopamine hit from speckles and self-striping but you have opened my eyes that it doesn’t have to be boring to be solid. I’m going to be ordering some fun colors soon and thank you for showcasing affordable yarns so we can have all the colors. 😂
Scheepjes Metropolis is another great sock yarn. It's a nice plump yarn in an incredible array of colours. I order it from Wool Warehouse - great low cost shipping to Canada (and I presume the US, too).
This is a great video! I typically learn towards indie dyers for my sock yarn (just placed my first Coates & co order!) but have been on the lookout for a more affordable yarn especially for contrast colors. I think I will try the cascade first!
Living in Denmark, I primarily grab for Drops Fabel, Regia, Arwetta from Filcolana, and the specialty colors from Hobbii like their christmas glitter edition. I bought a couple balls Jawoll in germany a few years ago, but for some reason only used them for baby clothes. I remember finding the yarn not quite sturdy enough formy taste. Whenever I have leftovers from a pair of socks, I use them in a never ending crochet granny blanket that my kids will eventually use in the car.
I love love love sock yarn! And I use it for everything but socks. Yes, that’s right! When I first discovered sock yarn, I made 35-40 pairs of lace mitts. Love your review of yarns-so good!!!❤❤❤ Learning to knit socks may be on my list this year…just discovered you today!
Great podcast episode, thank you! It would be interesting now if you would make a comparison of the durability of the sock wool. Greetings from Germany
Well, I uses jawoll and hedgehog myself, and have to say that Hedgehog has beautiful colours, but with only 10% nylon in it, I wore through my socks within a week...
Summer! Thanks so much,, Fun episode,,,, Love color,,,love socks, love yarn,,,!what could be Better! 💖💖🏘 Elaine🏡🏡 Getting some knit picks stroll next time,,and like Katie small plain colors for heels etc,,,
Thank you for you video about your favorite yarns. It was extremely helpful. I am on a very fixed budget. I love socks. My favorites to knit. I’m colorblind too. For my Mother’s Day, I received a copy of your newer fabulous book, Sock Project Color. Watching this video is a beautiful introduction to your book. Thank you so much for all of your valuable information.
Cascade Heritage is great. I ❤ Casual Fashion Queen's colorways! I first heard of CFQ yarn in Summer's SOS sock tutorial videos, checked out her website, and have been hooked ever since. 😊
The video is fantastic!! As an avid sock knitter I love hearing about your favorite sock yarns! Thanks for introducing me to Coates & Co!! Gorgeous yarn!!
I love that you covered Coates and Co! Her colors are beautiful and I haven’t seen many people use her yarn yet. Thanks for the video it was super cool seeing your stash and the colorways that you enjoy :)
This showed up in my feed and is exactly what I was needing. I’m fairly new at sock knitting and the ones I have knitted I don’t care for the yarns I used. Thanks for the info. Just subscribed. 🧶
Being in Europe.. stroll around 30 euro per 50 grams. Jawoll under 5 euro. But i prefer regia and Opal over lang yarns. The jawoll is thinner, i need 10 rows extra on the foot. I use a lot of Wol met Verve. Durable, indiedyed, pretty, lots of colors and under 20 euro per 100 grams.
I would love to see the inside of some of your socks! I’ve had some comments from other knitters about being nervous that colorwork socks would be too tight and it made me nervous about getting into making those even though I have some supplies! Tips and encouragement would be appreciated!
Thank you for this! I, too, love Stroll & HHF. I actually got to meet the dyer behind HHF a couple years ago when I was in Cork, Ireland. Rose is such a lovely person. I’ll have to check out the other ones you mentioned sometime.
Hello, I wanted to let you know I really have enjoyed your new UA-cam videos. I have been purchasing your patterns for a while now and I did purchase the Darrowby sock patterns but haven't made them yet. But after seeing them on your video, they were so much better than the photos had shown. Thanks for the yarn information. It's great to hear about yarns you use and why you like them...Oh, I love that you are including book reviews and answering questions. Have some fun on your book tour. Is there a list of where you will be going on the tour? I am going to sign up for your newsletter just in case you have already sent that information out to the world. Thanks for putting these videos together.
Oh dear….The temptation!! I recently bought 6 sk of Cascade Heritage (different colors). I have a LOT of indie dyed yarn (=variegated), and had a few sock patterns requiring one color, hence the Heritage purchase. Glad to see one of your faves! Fan of Lang Jawoll colors yet never knit with this, maybe couldn’t get easily?? HHF… nuff said, Gorgeous, drool-worthy for sure! Must check our Coates & Co, look at allll those colors! Thanks (…I think…) for giving me more ideas ( I mean Reasons) to look at (buy) more yarn. Your use of color in patterns is Astounding! Such inspiration, thank you!
Thank you for the reveal of your favorites. I can’t wait to try Coates & Co. I love Stroll as well. Was wondering, what do you think about Heritage Silk, do you knit with yarns that have silk instead of nylon? Love that such a talented sock designer is sharing your thoughts with us knitters💗💗💗🧦🧦🧦
I'm still surprised (and amused) at how differently many of us will react to the same yarns. Some people love West Yorkshire Spinners sock yarn, and I think their colors are really ugly. I was really disappointed with KP Stroll because it felt thin and it split a lot, very frustrating to knit with for me. I gave up on that yarn in the middle of a project and put all the rest I had into a donation box. I've been knitting socks for about three years, and by far my favorite sock yarn is Malabrigo Ultimate Sock. Lots of colors, including beautiful tonals, and it knits up into a fabric that feels a little more substantial, maybe "denser" than average, but still pleasant to the touch. For fans of self-striping yarn, I'd recommend taking a look at Woolens & Nosh. Michelle does great stripe combinations.
Thanks for this! I learned about some new brands! I tend to gravitate toward indie dyers and I love what you said about their palettes just speaking to you. I really love Palmer Yarn Co. and Salty Blonde Fiber. I also love Moonglow Yarn Co.’s sets - she pairs colors (especially fades) together so well!
Knit Picks Stroll is my favorite sock yarn too! I'm not a big pink fan but I used Dogwood Heather for my 2023 temp project and it's the perfect shade of pink to make me a pink person.
Summer…what a fun podcast! I enjoyed meeting you. Ihave purchsed your pattern, but had not met you. You have fun energy and your socks are beautiful. I subscribed and liked your podcast….thank you for sharing your yarn knowledge with me.
I loved this video. I am a Montana girl, and am currently working on knitting from stash. I was lucky in that back in the mid 80's I was introduced to Mountain Colors yarn. The ladies of Mountain Colors were among the first independent yarn dyers, and continued to dye yarn until this past spring when they retired. They sold their business to a delightful lady in Great Falls, MT. She is beginning to sell the yarn, but you have to check yarn shops. My LYS carries her sock yarn, and I can't wait to knit with it. I also love Polka Dot Sheep out of Whitefish, Montana. Their yarns are beautiful, and they ship very quickly. Knit Picks has been my favorite work horse yarn, and I have a large stash of it. I love knitting socks, but also knit some 'lighter weight' hats and fingerless mitts out of sock yarn. I haven't doubled it to make DK or worsted weight socks, because I have an enormous stash of those yarns.
@@summerleedesignco.6471 I hope you enjoy your virtual trip to Montana's yarn dyers. There are more than the ones I mentioned. The color names are fun, they reflect Montana places and geography. Mountain Colors is just getting restarted. I have purchased some of her sock yarn at my LYS. It is beautiful. Another one is Western Sky Knits. I haven't used her yarn, but it looks beautiful. There is also Farmer's Daughter Fibers, and Candace has a UA-cam podcast. I love her yarns, also. When I am buying yarns again--Tobacco Root Valley yarns are beautiful, and they dye soft single colored wools. The best way to find them is to Google Ranching Traditions Fibers. Happy exploring!
My favorite yarn source is by far Tanis Fiber Arts in Canada. I love their ethical & sustainable yarn, and their super fun vibe! Organic & GOTS certified wool for the win!
This was a really great video (some of my favorites made the list), and yay for the shoutout to McKinney Knittery! Love that place and really looking forward to your book signing! Btw, your haircut is super cute 🙂
As far as wear goes, the best I’ve found is Paton’s Kroy. It’s rather splitty while knitting, but the end product is so worth it. The socks wear like iron! I use a size 0 needle though, so the fabric is pretty dense.
I really enjoyed this podcast. Great range of sock yarn at all price ranges. Some of my favorites, Stroll and Cascade Heritage are at the top of my list for color choice and softness. I plan on trying the others you mentioned. Another Indie you would like is Barnyard Knits. She does wonderful tonals. I always look forward to your podcasts ❤️
Really enjoyed this. I'm in the UK, going to Las Vegas in September for my son's wedding and hoping to find a yarn store and buy some yarn that I can't normally get! I may take an extra suitcase😀😀Have pre-ordered your new book, counting down the days!!!!!
Oh this is such a great episode ! It’s kept me on the fence because I didn’t know what yarn to pick, but now I have some great choices ! Plus an opportunity to try expensive yarns, since you only need one skein ! Can’t wait for your book release !
Love, love, love this video. I recently started knitting socks (just finished your Seasons Socks) and am hooked. The timing of this video is perfect as I've been trying find my go-to sock yarns. Currently looking for colour ideas for your Weekend Shorty Socks. ♥
I loved this episode! I have knit two pairs of your "School of sock" pattern and I am hooked. I will definitely try the sock yarns you recommended, I have used a lot of Hedgehog Fibers for shawls but have not used the other companies. I currently have a ton of sock yarn as I joined the Farmer's Daughter Fibers "Sock Squad" for 2023. I am so looking forward to knitting more of your lovely patterns! And I preordered your book from my local bookstore.
My 2 favorites yarn sock are Lana Carpe Diem (local handy dyer in Québec, Canada) and Arwetta Filcollana. Thanks for sharing some of your favorite that aren't only expensive yarn!
Hope you have a great trip! To give you some hope, I think my ortho predicted I'd have braces for 2 years and I got them off in 1.5, I think because I did everything they told me to. I was 14 at the time, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference in how quick it goes, but they can come off sooner than expected.
Lovely socks I haven’t knitted socks yet although will be seventy in March so knitting sixty five years at least but I intend to get ur book greetings from edinburgh
Some of my favourite Australian indie dyers are: Fluff and Nonsense, The Purl Box, Fibresmith, The Great Ocean Road Woollen Mill (not a dyer but their yarn is to dye for… pun intended) lovebird lane and obviously Bendigo woollen mill.
Loved this video! I often ask for indie dyed sock yarns as gifts from folks who live in other places and I love the feeling of vicariously getting to visit other people’s LYSs and picking up local treasures. I’m currently knitting with Ancient Arts Socknado. They’re based in Alberta, where my sister lives.
That's so cool! I love to visit yarn shops on our road trips and buy local indie-dyed yarn. Then when I knit the socks, it's like fun little memory of our trip!
I love Cascade Heritage and can attest that it is very long wearing and one of my go-to yarns for socks for my husband. He prefers solid socks though sometimes I sneak in some stripes gradient colors. I have also had excellent results making socks for him with Jang Lawoll gradient socks, where 2 skeins make matching the gradient easy.
Have to leave a comment as I am using the Lang Jawoll yarn, first time, for a pair of Imber socks and this yarn is awesome. I’ve tried several different brands and I think I like this best for colorwork. Thank you so much for the recommendation.
I have a new yarn to check out!!! LOVE the colors you showed here. My question is- I want to try toe up socks (just to mix up my sock life!) and feel intimidated because placing the heel seems trickier than top down. I prefer a short row heel, and wondered if you can talk about getting the heel at the right spot? Thank you so much!
Love your videos I support an Indy Dyer called Fiber Lily. I love her yarns she is in Queensland Australia You are so right about the shipping costs from the US to Aus they are crazy Thanks for your great patterns too. Jananoo from Sydney
Dude, thank you! I never know where to order from or what to order or whether to go solid/ speckle/pattern or what. I’m so excited about ordering new yarn now! 😻
I have used a lot of Knit Picks stroll and their Hawthorne sock yarn. It is a good sock yarn and budget friendly. I will have to check out the Lang Jawoll and I have some Cascade heritage on order.
My top is Patons Kroy Socks. SUPER durable. Longest lasting socks for the fam have been from Kroy Socks.
I am knitting now with the Kroy. I find it much heavier than other sick yarns I have used. On us1 (2.25) needles, the fabric is very dense. That being said, if I can get through the full pair, they will be warm and hard wearing.

As someone who studied German, I suspected Jawoll was a German play on words lost to us Americans! Very fun!
Thank you for the correct pronunciation! And the play on words! It’s fun to know those kind of things!
Summer.. I’m watching your older video on the designing around the leap day sock. I just have to say that you are the best. You make me laugh and enjoy time with you. I’m looking forward to more of your videos
I love sock yarn. My favorite is merino blends as my skin is sensitive and other yarns itch too much to wear. Love your pics🎉

I'm glad you like it too! Her colors just blew me away, and that cottage sock base is heavenly!
I love that you covered Coates and Co! Her colors are beautiful and I haven’t seen many people use her yarn yet. Thanks for the video it was super cool seeing your stash and the colorways that you enjoy :)
Her colors blow my mind!! I'm completely obsessed!
Just found your podcast through Beth MacDonald Stone’s shout out about your patterns. Well done. Great podcast!
I just bought more hedgehog fiber yarn today speckled and a matching solid on the yarn crawl. Beautiful
Thanks so much for sharing these ideas. I love supporting indie dyers.
The moment I realize you might be semi local! 🤩 I was at McKinney Knittery today for the north Texas yarn crawl.
Jawoll!! ❤❤ if you’re ever destashing those reinforcement spools - let me know!
hi enjoyed watching you i am a new knitter i learned alot about yarns for socks i live in canada no small yarn shops near me
Oh dear….The temptation!!
Thanks so much for the great yarn sources! And love your podcasts 🫶🏼
My first time hearing about Wool & Co And they have free shipping (in the US) no minimum……ummmm that’s AMAZING! Thank you for sharing!!!
I looooved this episode. I’m just getting back into making socks again this year and love your suggestions. Now off to find more sock yarns ha ha ❤❤❤
I subscribed and liked your podcast….thank you for sharing your yarn knowledge with me.
omg the hedgehoge fibers! very pricey, but theyll make some damn gorgeous otks.
This is fantastic! So excited to look these Montana dyers up!
What a great video! I appreciate so much that you showcased some indie dyers and some more economical options. ❤️
I love a range! It's nice to splurge and invest in indie-dyed when you can, but I love having affordable options too!
My favorite yarn source is by far Tanis Fiber Arts in Canada. I love their ethical & sustainable yarn, and their super fun vibe! Organic & GOTS certified wool for the win!
that just cost me $150…can’t wait to start knitting cute socks.
Fabulous video and I so appreciate seeing the yarns in several different shades. LOVE Hedgehog Fibres yarn!!
Thanks for the recommendation! I'm excited to check her out!
I'm so glad it was helpful!!
I love Farmer's Daughter Fibers! Her sock squad colors are always fantastic! And thank you for pre-ordering my book! I hope you enjoy it!!
So informative! Thanks for the spectacular video!
I just ordered some Heritage sock yarn. 😂 Thanks Summer 🙋🏻♀️😎
Wow! This was so helpful! Great topic! I love your haircut, too!!
Love your videos I support an Indy Dyer called Fiber Lily. I love her yarns she is in Queensland Australia You are so right about the shipping costs from the US to Aus they are crazy Thanks for your great patterns too. Jananoo from Sydney
Love Knit Picks Stroll yarn! I have knitted many socks with it🧶
Love seeing your recommendations! Thank you!
Dude, thank you! I never know where to order from or what to order or whether to go solid/ speckle/pattern or what. I’m so excited about ordering new yarn now! 😻
Love you and love your haircut!
Thank you for your great podcast! I’m so happy I found you!
I have used a lot of Knit Picks stroll and their Hawthorne sock yarn. It is a good sock yarn and budget friendly. I will have to check out the Lang Jawoll and I have some Cascade heritage on order.
Such a wonderful video!!! I loved it all. I saved it for referencing later. All the best, Kimberly
Thanks for this!
This is great information! Thank you, Summer!
When does your new book come out? I agree with your favorite yarns…Heritage and Knit Picks Stroll and Hedgehog Fibers. Wonderful video…thank you.
